The Totems of Zambezi
Mid-November 2022
After the DEO had taken over STAR Labs – just before Harrison Wells had the chance to turn on the Particle Accelerator – the place had become a hive for the military operation; but once Alex Danvers had taken over as Director after her father's death, she had slowly been turning the laboratory into a what it was meant to be, albeit now run by the government and the DEO.
With Supergirl, the Flash, Firestorm and even ATOM working out of the Laboratory, they couldn't completely turn it back over to science, but it was good to have the place back to doing what it was meant to; that said, one condition Doctor Wells had set up when officially putting the Labs back to what it had been was to educate children, to inspire them to be all they could be.
That was why, this weekend, Alex herself had decided to take over as tour guide for a bunch of students from Blue Valley High School. As Blue Valley was in Nebraska, the tour was to take place over the weekend, rather than during the school weekday due to the travel time to and from the other State.
Alex knew the areas to show the kids, and the places not to show them – including the part of the labs being remade after a terrible accident a few months ago which had left two children orphans. That itself had a happy enough ending, given those children were Zari and Adri, whom Barry and Kara had taken in.
Leading the group of students into the Pipeline, Alex had to pause when one of the more annoying teens spoke up.
"Are we going to see Supergirl or the Flash?" The question was put to Alex. The Pipeline – now free of prisoners, due to their transfer to either the new DEO facility in a converted warehouse down the road, or to Fort Rozz, which was also the base of the Justice League these days – seemed not to interest the teenagers more than meeting a superhero. Alex tried not to roll her eyes at the question.
"For the umpteenth time, I don't know," Alex sighed. She was showing a group of some twenty students today and the question had been asked already by one of the more annoying ones – the latest in a group of his friends to ask the question.
"Not even for teens?" The teenager asked back as Alex actually did roll her eyes, wondering why she didn't delegate these tours to someone else as she steeled herself.
"Not even for teens," she stated simply wondering why this teen would think his age would matter on whether or not Supergirl or the Flash were around. "Now, as I was saying, the Pipeline here is a Particle Accelerator, although currently it's non-operational, you can see how…"
As she spoke, two female students at the back of the pack, a blonde girl with wavy hair and a Mexican girl, weren't listening; taking quietly to each other. The blonde, though, paused as she noticed something out of the corner of her eye.
"Come on, Landa," she muttered to her friend.
"What?" Her friend asked as the blonde grabbed her, leading her to a door that was ajar. "Court!" She protested as she was led away.
"Doors don't just open by themselves," Court stated, as they successfully slipped away from Alex and the rest of the tour.
"What do you mean?" Landa asked.
"This door just opened as I looked at it," Court explained, finding themselves in a corridor. "It's just like that dream I told you about this morning. STAR Labs, an open door…" Court explained.
"I think we should head back…" Landa muttered, following behind her friend in the empty corridor.
"No, no. Come on…" Court stated. "I told you; I had a dream about this place –"
"Maybe because we've been down to visit this place for months," Landa pointed out to her friend.
"Not like that. I'm meant to do something here… find something… and then that door opened and here we are," Court explained as her friend sighed.
"So, we're meant to break the rules, escape the group and find something that's going to get us into so much trouble?" Landa asked.
"Trust me, we're not going to get into trouble," Court smirked to herself as she stopped beyond another door that was ajar. "The only open door in this place. Come on," she opened the door fully.

Barry and Kara were in their townhouse; just them, the kids and Lara the dog. Zari was doing homework upstairs while Adri was watching a TV show in the living room. Both adults had a baby each, with Barry handling Avery and Kara with Aiden. Luckily, Avery seemed to be in content mood today, although Barry wondered if there was a Speed Force connection at play that calmed her down, given she usually seemed more restless with her mom, than her dad. While the kids weren't exactly showing powers, he knew that this ethereal connection was beyond powers as he remembered when Rae of New Justice Earth had told him speedster parents and their kids had connections.
He and Kara were in the kitchen, with Barry eating a sandwich with his free arm, and Kara sorting out more of the babies' milk for the next few days.
The doorbell rang at that, and the couple paused as Barry frowned.
"Oh no…" Kara moaned, using her x-ray vision to see the front door and the people waiting outside.
"Who?" Barry asked, putting Avery in the large cot they had in the kitchen as Kara put Aiden in with his sister. Lara, their Kryptonian dog, came into the kitchen – having been with Adri – to head over to the babies, protective of them.
"Just… watch your shins," Kara sighed, quickly petting her dog before heading out of the kitchen and down the hallway to the front door, Barry following as the bell went again.
With Kara opening the door, Barry had to groan at who was waiting; one person he liked, but the other he wasn't too keen on – an old lady with a cane and a permanent smirk on her face.
"Mari," Barry smiled at the younger woman. "Ms. Tyler…" he addressed the elder one.
"Hi Barry, I'm sorry about–" Mari began, but was interrupted by her grandmother.
"No time for pleasantries," the older woman stated, forcing her way across the threshold and into the entrance hall. With the living room just to the right of the entrance hall, Adri looked up from watching the TV, curious as to what was going on.
"The last time you were here…" Barry began, jumping backward to avoid being battered by the older woman's cane, but Amaya Tyler had already moved into the living area and was looking around, hitting the bottom of the couch and the table with her cane while she did.
"Yes, yes, we gave your sister the Death Totem and the Spirit Guides have told me she's doing very well with it," Amaya stated, turning back to the couple. "The help of another world is vital in her training," she added, bemusedly.
"Adri, why don't you go and watch your show in our room?" Kara asked her youngest foster daughter, who didn't question this as she jumped up from the couch and ran into the entrance hall to take the stairs up. Kara, meanwhile, grabbed the remote to turn off the TV as Amaya's eyes lingered after the girl, her eyes momentarily thin, as if she was assessing Adri. Barry didn't like this.
"My sister never wanted the Death Totem," Barry brought the attention back to him, "what you did was–"
"Necessary," Amaya interrupted. "Mari, if you please?"
Up until this moment, Mari had been quiet, and slightly red in the face with embarrassment for her grandmother but moved forward with a backpack she had been wearing. Barry and Kara glanced at one another as Mari opened the backpack and took out three ornate boxes and placed them on the coffee table. They were all dark oaken, but their carvings were in different colours, one was orange, one was red, the last was green.
"Oh no…" Barry moaned, figuring what this meant.
"The three remaining Totems of Zambezi," Amaya stated as Mari took a step back, Amaya opening the three boxes to show three gems on chains: a light blue gem, a fiery red gem, and an atypical diamond-shaped green gem. "The last time we spoke, I mentioned the others were waking. Well, now they are ready. All of them need owners for the oncoming darkness."
"What oncoming darkness?" Kara asked; those words grabbed her attention more than anything else.
"The Spirit Guides remain ambiguous over the nature of this evil," Amaya continued.
"It's evil now?" Kara interrupted, to a glare from Amaya.
"All I know is that this is an evil this world has not seen in a long time. It will take the powers of the Totems, the heroes, a Cosmic Staff, an ethereal sprite, and something called a Paragon to stop it," Amaya continued, causing both Barry and Kara to pause at this. Kara was the Paragon of Courage, chosen by the multiverse itself to help restore it after the Infinite Crisis, along with six other Paragons – a fact that she decided to keep quiet on, now with Amaya present. The other things they didn't know much – if anything – about.
"So… we just need to remain vigilant?" Barry asked, wanting not to alert Amaya to their knowledge of Paragons just yet.
"Not only that, but you need to find the three remaining Totem Bearers – along with the one within this house," Amaya explained, causing the pair to pause again; they'd almost forgotten that Amaya had sensed a Totem in their home. "With the Spirit and Death Totems accounted for," she nodded to her silent granddaughter, current bearer of the Spirit Totem, "and the Earth, Fire and Water Totems present, that means that the Air Totem is the one in this home…"
"But I don't recall…?" Barry began, but a sound at the door alerted them to the presence of someone else in the room. They looked to see Zari standing in the doorway, holding a fourth ornate box.
"It's mine," Zari stated, quietly, "or at least, part of my family. The Air Totem."

Courtney 'Court' Whitmore and her friend, Yolanda 'Landa' Montes, moved through the open door at STAR Labs to pause at its contents.
"A storage room?" Yolanda asked, eyebrow raised. It was, in fact, a small room, with many metal storage shelves about the place with boxes and boxes of unknown contents.
"I didn't realize…" Courtney paused, frowning, and pouting to herself.
"What exactly did you dream about?" Yolanda asked.
"The Labs, an open door… and a stick," Courtney muttered, looking at the shelves as she moved about the room.
"A stick?" Yolanda asked, eyebrow raised now.
"Well not a stick. Kind of like a wizard's staff, only it had a curve in it…" Courtney explained.
"A curved wizard's staff in a science laboratory… Courtney, you really are chasing a dream. We should head back to the group before that Danvers woman notices we're gone," Yolanda stated, annoyed at her friend.
"No… no…" Courtney muttered, looking around the storage room, quietly curious as to what she might find while her friend stayed by the door. She picked up a small box, frowned at the purple gem within before closing it again and putting it back. "This place was once the operation of what became the Justice League, they've dealt with meta humans, Enchantress, magic users, those Sisters of Fate… there's got to be so much here. A curved wizard's staff isn't out of the question," she continued.
"And yet I find myself questioning you all the time," Yolanda mused to herself; Courtney gave a laugh at that.
"Oh, Landa…" Courtney began, but paused when she noticed a long, thin, box on the top shelf of one of the storage units – something was drawing her to it. The box was a little higher up for either girl to reach, but with athletic skills, Courtney climbed up to the top of the shelf and grabbed the box. Unfortunately, it slipped from her grasp and fell from its perch.
Yolanda ran forward, grabbing the box, which opened during its fall; a long, curved golden staff dropping out and landing in her other hand.
"Oh wow," Yolanda breathed, looking at the staff. It was exactly as what Courtney described; long, with an almost spear-shaped end, but curved near the top. She looked up at her friend.
"That's it!" Courtney stated, jumping down from the shelves. Yolanda paused as Courtney held out her hand, and after a moment of hesitation, she handed the staff to her friend.
On contact with Courtney's skin, the staff suddenly lit up, glowing a brilliant gold – much to both girls' surprise.
"Whoa! How did you know…?" Yolanda asked, eyes wide as Courtney swung the staff around, grinning to herself.
"I honestly didn't know… although how are we going to sneak this out of here…" Courtney mused.
"Wait, you actually want to steal it?!" Yolanda asked, shocked by this.
"I didn't come here just to have a look," Courtney smirked at her friend; but suddenly the staff seemed to have a mind of its own as it jumped from Courtney's hand, taking to the air before flying into the ventilator shaft, barely making a noise.
"What the…?" Yolanda gasped.
"I think it's finding its own way out," Courtney mused. She had was glad it was free, but she wanted it with her for some reason and suddenly she wasn't sure if she would see it again.
"It has a mind of its own?" Yolanda frowned at that.
"You did just see what I saw," Courtney pointed out. "Come on, let's get back to the tour."
"First sensible words you've said today," Yolanda muttered as she turned back to the door, going to head out. Courtney paused, looking up at the ventilator shaft in longing for a moment, before Yolanda made a noise and Courtney pulled herself away, to follow.

At Barry and Kara's townhouse, Barry had moved quickly to Zari's side, fearful that Amaya would close the gap and scare the girl, but was glad when the old lady didn't move, although the smirk was ever present on her face.
"Your family heirloom?" Barry asked Zari of the Totem she had, knowing the girl had mentioned a family heirloom a few times, but never having thought about it too much.
"Yes," Zari said, still holding the box that contained the Air Totem.
"Well, this is a difficult situation, indeed," Amaya spoke up, Barry turning to glare at the woman.
"How does this make the situation difficult? It's an heirloom," he stated.
"The Air Totem is yours, child," Amaya nodded to Zari, "but you are too young to wield it. Without all six Totems together… I fear this world will succumb to the evil that approaches."
"Evil?" Zari's eyes went wide at this. Her hands tightening around the totem.
"Why don't you shut up?" Kara spoke up, seeing her foster daughter's reaction and directing the question to Amaya before moving to Zari, taking the box from the girl.
"Grandma…" Mari tried but didn't receive a reaction from the woman.
"Why don't you explain what you know about this… heirloom?" Kara now asked Zari.
"It was my father's," Zari began, not meeting Amaya's eyes as the woman now scowled at Kara. "He told me it would be mine when I came of age, that I needn't worry about it until then. He was… he was going to train me with it," she looked down at that; her parents had only died about six months ago now, and while Barry and Kara had given her and Adri all the love and attention they could, they never, truly, could replace the parents she'd lost. Barry hugged her at this.
"Did he use the Totem?" Mari was the one to ask this, calmly and quietly so her grandmother didn't have to.
"I… I think so," Zari looked to Mari at this, the young woman smiling at the girl, instantly calming her. "When he was young. After he and mom married and they had me and Adri, he stored it away for me."
"For the next generation," Amaya muttered. "But your father is no longer with us, is he?"
"Of course not," Kara stated at this. "He died six months ago in an explosion. Zari is our daughter now."
"Meaning there's only you…" Amaya mused.
"Look," Barry stood at this, knowing what Amaya meant on her words, "if this oncoming… darkness is as a bad as you say it is, I won't risk my twelve-year-old daughter on it."
"No, no that is unfair for her," Amaya nodded, agreeing with Barry for once. "No child should have to use a Totem. But there are others… a connection. I sense it. The family connection is prominent, but there are others who the Totem would find worthy. If you were to give it up, child, they could be chosen. But if they connected to the Air Totem, the family connection would break for Zari here forever. She would have no link to it, anymore. The Totem would belong to the new bearer and stayed connected to that bearer's family instead."
"But it's part of my family, part of my dad… I can't," Zari began.
"We can't ask this of her," Barry said. As much as he disliked Amaya he knew if she was right about the Totem being needed to stop some great evil which they needed it to be used. At the same time, he couldn't ask his daughter to give up something so important to her. Important to her family.
"What Force powers the Air Totem?" Kara was the one to ask this, causing Amaya to pause at the question and Barry to frown. "The Forces of Universes put their powers into the Totems, right? Meaning one of the Forces controls the Air Totem. If there's a child of that Force on this world, or someone with a connection to that Force, in theory they could use the Totem without it leaving the bloodline of Zari's family since they would have their own connection to the Force in question."
"You're very knowledgeable," Amaya smirked. "I suspected you were the Paragon of this world."
"Spoilers," Kara stated simply but knew Amaya knew now. She didn't need to confirm it right now though.
"It's the Speed Force," Mari was the one to say this, though, as eyes turned to her. "The Speed Force powers the Air Totem."
"Wait a moment…" Barry spoke up at this, with a dawning realization.
"Then that settles it, Mr. Allen – the Flash," Amaya stated simply. "You can wield the Air Totem and it can pass onto Zari quite happily thereafter. Now as for the other three…" she turned her attention back to the other Totems.
"Wait, wait, wait," Barry moved forward now, before Amaya could continue to the other Totems. "Me use the Air Totem? What if the Flash is needed?"
"I'm sure you can figure that one out in time," Amaya smirked.
"Kara?" Barry implored, looking to Kara now, who couldn't help but chuckle.
"Come on, Zari, let's head back upstairs and let the grown-ups talk," Kara decided, putting an arm around the girl, and leading her back to the hall; she also wanted to check up on the twins in the kitchen, to make sure Lara was being a good dog in looking after them. Barry sighed at this, feeling a little abandoned now.
"Fine," Barry moaned, turning his attention to the older woman. "So, the other Totems?"
-SuperEarth-
That afternoon, with the school tour done, Alex had wanted to relax in her office – she'd recently had a very comfortable sofa installed in there, after all – but, instead, found herself in the storage room of STAR Labs, having been alerted by Agents Vasquez and Valdes that there had been a breach.
"So, how exactly did this door open?" She asked, looking into the clearly ransacked room, before looking back at the two agents who had alerted her.
"No idea, ma'am," Agent Vasquez stated.
"It has a secure locking code, but there's no evidence that this was hacked, or that the door had been opened already before the daily security check…" Agent Valdes added.
"So… it just opened on its own without any indication?" Alex sighed. "Inventory. What's been taken?"
"Only one item," Agent Vasquez stated, leading her boss into the room.
"The Cosmic Staff," Agent Valdes supplied, taking in the rear, and showing Alex the empty, long box which the staff had been stored in.
"The what staff?" Alex asked.
"Cosmic Staff. Another magical item," Agent Valdes continued. "It once belongs to Stargirl during the 1940s and '50s, however it's been inanimate and unclaimed for so long…"
"Maybe it activated itself and flew out?" Alex mused, knowing magic well herself. "Hey, what's this?" She'd noticed a small box and opened it, seeing the purple gem within.
"Urm, the Black Diamond," Agent Vaquez stated, looking at the tablet computer she held, containing information on their inventory.
"It's purple," Alex mused.
"Well, it's official designation is the Black Diamond. It contains… well, evil," Agent Vasquez stated, confirming the name on the tablet.
"Evil – in what sense?" Alex asked, still looking at the diamond, suddenly quite transfixed.
"Not much is listed here, but an entity known as Eclipso is said to be trapped in that gem. He's dangerous, probably like Enchantress. I would put that back if were you, boss," Agent Vasquez added of the gem.
"Right… right," Alex stated, putting the box back. She wasn't completely listening to her colleagues, though. "Well, if it's just the Cosmic Staff that's missing, make a note of it and alert the rest of the DEO to keep an eye out. If that's all…?"
"Yes, ma'am, that's all," Agents Vasquez and Valdes now said as one. Alex nodded at that, indicating as they took the lead out of the storage area. She followed, but not before slipping the Black Diamond, unnoticed, into her pocket.
-SuperEarth-
That evening Barry and Kara were getting ready for bed – Barry had read Zari and Adri a bedtime story, while Kara had readied the twins for their current usual bedtime routine; the babies currently sleeping in their room in a cot at the end of the bed, with a dog bed beside it for Lara.
Barry had been distracted since Amaya and Mari had left but had hidden it well around the girls. Now it was just he and Kara, though, it was time to address his concerns.
Kara, Barry began over the bond as he got into bed first.
You're worried, Kara thought back, following him into bed.
Yes, Barry mused. This… oncoming darkness, evil, whatever. The Totems… What could Amaya have meant by it all? We've only just got over Enchantress and Crisis.
I don't know, Kara thought back. But it's something we can face together – and as a team, as part of the League. We always knew the next big threat would come. It's the reason we have the League, after all.
True, Barry didn't sound convinced, though.
What did Amaya say about the other Totems? I'm guessing she has an idea who would wield them? Kara asked back now.
Yeah. The Fire Totem's new owner is an older teenage girl with a dark history and connection to magic, Barry began, trying to remember the descriptions Amaya had given.
Raven? Kara wondered, mentioning the former apprentice of John Constantine who was now training the former hell spawn Astra Logue.
I don't think so, but not a bad guess, Barry mused, having wondered this himself when it was mentioned. But the Water Totem belongs to a scientist we're close to…
That narrows it down to no one, Kara mused, given they knew a lot of scientists thanks to STAR Labs and Barry's own business in WellsAllen Tech: Jesse and Belle Wells, Martin Stein, Ray Palmer, Aunt Astra, Harrison Wells, and many others could fit that description.
And, urm, the Earth Totem has a loose connection to the Death Totem, as it's someone Mila knows but not directly, Barry added, Kara pausing at this.
Just what we need, another connection to your sister, Kara couldn't help but sigh.
Kara, please… Barry didn't want to fight over Mila when she'd only been mentioned in passing. Kara understood this, remaining silent for a moment.
What else is wrong? Kara asked, turning on the bed to look at him.
The Air Totem… Zari's heirloom… it's from the Speed Force, meaning Zari would have a connection to the Speed Force, Barry stated.
So? That's a good thing, right? Kara frowned.
When I first met her, I felt an instant connection – even now I feel that bond. Is it real or just part of the Speed Force? Barry asked.
"Barry," Kara now spoke aloud at this. "I've met the Speed Force, during Crisis. She saved all she could. She's as motherly as they come. If this connection between you and Zari is natural or made by the Speed Force, it's for good intention. Besides we really should have expected this. I mean remember Splitsville Legends?"
"What?" Barry asked, confused by the seeming change of topic.
"The Air Totem Bearer of the Legends of Splitsville Earth. Her name was Zari," Kara commented.
"She's a grown woman," Barry said. "Zari is 12. Even Zari on Beautiful Earth is 12."
"The Legends are time travelers," Kara reminded Barry who paused.
"But… but her last name was Tomaz. Zari's is Tarazi," Barry tried, but he knew Kara was right – something had changed that Zari's last name, some recent history or even a choice of that Zari, but she was their daughter… all grown up.
"You really shouldn't worry about it," Kara decided on as Barry's thoughts went wild now. "Embrace it."
"Yeah, embrace it," Barry couldn't help but repeat and smile at that. Lara gave a little bark on the floor, as if agreeing with this statement and the pair laughed at the dog.
"Seems Lara agrees," Kara commented, glad the dog hadn't woken up the babies, but knowing Lara wouldn't have anyway.
What happens when the Air Totem is needed, though? Barry went back to his head as he settled down. Wanting to change the topic now.
We'll cross that bridge when we come to it, Kara mused back. Because somehow, you'll have to be in two places at once. Might be easier than you think, being a speedster.
Maybe I can ask Rae. She's good at knowing that stuff, Barry mused back, thinking of his alternative cousin and sometimes speedster trainer. She'd helped him a lot before when it came to being a speedster.

Courtney Whitmore was back in her home in Blue Valley. It was the next evening and her mind had gone over the events of the previous day, with her and Yolanda breaking away from the group at STAR Labs and discovering that glowing staff. She'd been put out that the staff had flown away and not come back to her and had been looking around for it ever since.
That was when she heard a knocking at her bedroom window, causing her to pause – she was on the second floor, after all.
Heading to the window, she opened the curtains and grinned at the glowing staff floating outside her window. She opened the window, and the staff flew in, pausing in front of her.
"I wondered if I'd ever see you again," she told the staff, not sure why she was speaking to it, but it reacted to her, the glow going from the middle to the top of the staff and then back as if saying it would come back.
"You wanted to explore, now you're free?" Courtney added, and the staff moved back and forth, nodding at her. She laughed.
Then, the staff moved back toward the open window, but paused, almost looking back at her.
"You want me to come along?" She asked, not knowing why she was talking to this thing, or how it could be reacting to her, but again it 'nodded', even more eager than before. "Well, alright, but we've got to be back in an hour, I have school tomorrow…" the staff flew back to her, knocking into her legs so she fell onto it, in a side-saddle position.
"I guess we're going flying," Courtney chuckled as the staff glowed brightly, zooming out of the window with her sitting on it, trying not to laugh too loud to alert her family or neighbors as they flew off into the evening.

Nyxlygsptlnz may not have most of her powers back but being a Fifth Dimensional Imp had its benefits. Of course, she was looking for this Reign Worldkiller thing, obviously, but on a world full of magical potential, she couldn't help herself… manipulating some things to her advantage – not that she would need to if she hadn't sensed the oncoming danger on this world.
She'd felt something wrong soon after she'd landed, like the electricity before a storm. Something big was coming and it was unavoidable – even if she, herself, desperately wanted to avoid it. But she was stuck on this world, and she knew what would help against this oncoming storm.
STAR Labs had been the best place for that – after all, the Cosmic Staff was there, and that was what she needed. Nxyly also knew that the true wielder of the Cosmic Staff was in the building that day too, so all she needed to do was get the future… Stargirl to her future magical object.
It started with implanting a dream – a simple matter of manipulation over the magic of the world, directed at the future Stargirl herself; then was using that magic to open a few doors at STAR Labs, when the future Stargirl was in the right place. After that, she knew the cogs would be in motion enough that she didn't need to do anything more.
It felt good to be able to do something even without her powers. Sadly, the magic around this world wasn't enough to destroy the cuff which stopped her using her true powers, but it was fun to play with, to test and to somewhat control the tiny creatures of this puny planet.
Witnessing the events from afar and knowing that the wheels were in motion for Stargirl to help against the oncoming evil, Nxyly really needed to focus her attention on finding the Worldkiller Reign, and a woman called Samantha Arias had recently piqued her interests.
Post-chapter note: Well, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. SuperEarth may have a new hero and we now know what Zari's family heirloom is (as if we didn't know already – haha!). Any guesses as to whom the last three Totems Bearers may be?
