"But... I have a Smartphone!" the young man dressed in the white pimp coat said. "Girls LOVE the Smartphone!"

"GET AWAY FROM MY GIRLFRIEND!" Devas yelled.

"Hey!" Elze yelled, her sister Linze beside her as they shielded Touya.

Yae, the swords woman, was fighting Gabrielle, but was having real trouble, her normal katana not managing well against a magic sword.

The Scribe QUICKLY suggested, "Maybe we should just... go our seperate ways?"

"Devas, we don't need to fight them," Gabrielle agreed, backing off from Yae cautiously.

Devas scowled, but accepted that. Though she kept herself between the guy and her party... he really was frighteningly powerful in magic.

"You have NO taste," Elze added as the group hurried off.

"Well, that was a thing..." Sinon noted.

(They had heard rumours that Smartphone-guy was one of the escaped demons they were chasing. Apparently not.)

"Sorry," Scribe apologized, "he SOUNDED demonic."

"Not your fault," Gabrielle waved it off.

Devas looked less happy, but she let it go. Despite being a former Demon Lord she had no reliable way to track down her former subjects. So they were stuck chasing down possible sightings.

"Pay the toll and I'll let you cross," the huge female minotaur ordered from her shed beside the bridge, sounding somewhat bored.

"Taura?" Devas blinked in surprise at her former minion.

"Hey, boss!" the nearly ten foot tall woman waved. "What's shaking?"

"What are you doing charging tolls?" Devas asked.

"It's traditional!" Taura protested. "Besides, the bridge was a wreck when I arrived."

Indeed, the stone bridge was in fine shape, and looked nearly brand new.

Scribe checked the report they got from the local lord, "Is it true you're killing people who try to cross without paying?"

"WHAT." Taura blinked. "Are you kidding? Doing that gets over-eager heroes sent after you to kill you."

Gabrielle kind of hid her sword behind her.

"So what does happen?" Scribe had to ask.

"I refuse them passage. If they get really pushy, I chuck them in the river," Taura shrugged.

"Oh," Scribe realized what was up.

"What's going on?" Sinon frowned.

Scribe frowned, "I think the local lord is not happy about this legal toll bridge, and hoped we'd solve the problem for him."

"Bastard," Gabrielle scowled.

"Agreed," Sinon nodded. "Is there anything we can do?" she asked.

"As the 'Chosen Hero' I met the king once. We could send a letter saying what his minion tried to pull," Gabrielle suggested.

"I'll help you write it," Scribe agreed.

"So is anyone going to stab, kill or banish me?" Taura asked wryly. "I hate the suspense."

"No, I think you're okay," Gabrielle said sheepishly.

Later, in another part of the kingdom...

"Wait a minute. You're TEN YEARS OLD?" Scribe asked.

"Well, yes," Negi admitted.

"And ALL THESE TEENAGERS are chasing you?" Scribe clarified.

"Uhm, yes?" Negi conceded.

Even Devas looked appalled. The band of teen aged harem-ettes looked sheepish, apparently not having considered the unfortunate implications.

The girl with wings raised a hand as she said, "I'm not involved in that, I'm just here guarding my lady, Konoka."

"Setsuna!" Konoka sighed, clutching her arm.

Ayaka Yukihiro sniffed as the blond said, "There's nothing WRONG with liking young boys."

There was a LONG beat of silence.

"I am summoning child protective services...," Gabrielle said flatly, Devas nodding.

0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0

The 'giant snake' they were looking for ended up being a lamia. A very annoyed lamia at that.

"YOUUUU..." he glared at Devas in pure loathing.

"I take it you know him?" Scribe asked.

"DIE!" he roared, slithering across the ground quickly as he raced at Devas.

"Yes, she knows him," Sinon agreed as she fired arrows into his body. Annoyingly, she shafts just snapped, breaking against his scales.

Gabrielle swung her magic sword, but barely put a dent into it. "Ooof!" she grunted.

Devas took the blow on her crossed arms, sliding backwards. "Well, Shinmai, as angry as ever," she noted calmly.

Shinmai hissed angrily, "You locked me underground a thousand years!"

"Because you kept killing everything you met!" Devas shot back.

The two demons fought furiously, raining blows down on each otner. The lamia's clawed hands would have torn a human to ribbons, but Devas stood up to him well. At the same time his scales were effective armor, too.

"I will kill you and never be bound again!" Shinmai yelled.

Sinon was watching the scales flex. "A gap," she exclaimed and fired off arrows, plunging them into a break in the scales on his lower back.

"Argh!" he yelped in pain.

Devas seized the opening, hammering him repeatedly. "He's weakened!" she yelled.

"Banishing Blade!" Gabrielle cried, slasing as the sword blade glowed.

With a anguished cry the lamia disappeared, banished back to the demon realm.

"Is everyone okay?" Scribe demanded, readying the medicine bag.

"Just banged up a bit," Devas admitted, but everyone was checked over.

"You locked him up a thousand years?" Sinon asked curiously.

"He killed anything he met, human or demon," Devas admitted, "and I didn't want to just kill him so..."

"You spared him out of kindness?" Gabrielle asked.

"No, he'd be a useful weapon if there was a human/demon war," Devas noted dryly.

"I keep forgetting you were a villain," Scribe said.

Devas just grinned at that.

"All right, let's let the nearby villages know the monster is gone," Gabrielle said briskly.

"And I'll put in my latest reports to the guild," Scribe added.

"Are your reports why everyone knows who we are?" Sinon asked, looking at Scribe warmly.

Scribe blushed faintly. "That and songs spread by bards," she agreed, "I understand songs about Devas and Gabrielle are very popular."

"I'd rather read what you create," Sinon purred.

Scribe blushed even brighter...

Notes: This is sort of a 'magical crossover universe' basically. Don't think about the canon too hard, or you'll give yourself a headache.

Just finished 'In Another World with My Smartphone.' Not bad actually, though it's very generic. This is set early on in that series.

I actually liked Negima, but yes there's some REALLY unfortunate implications there.

Didn't realize the chapter was THAT short. Next bit should be longer.

"Wait, you're a goblin and you don't want to rape us?" Scribe blinked as the group interrogated a captive monster.

"What?" the captive goblin looked offended, "Ewww."

"I thought all goblins did that," Sinon mused.

"No," Devas noted, "just the ones who come from the depths. The surface goblins reproduce non-sexually."

"Huh?" Scribe asked.

"We eats. We get full. We split in two," the Goblin explained.

"Oh. Just like bacteria," Gabrielle noted, though no one else understood what she meant.

"So even if I posed sexy, they'd just go 'what'?" Sinon noted.

"Basically. They just don't care," Devas said. "Though someone who's as flat as you can't really do sexy..."

Sinon just ignored that.

"Well, they're still attacking villages, even if not raping," Scribe noted. "So we still have to stop them. Miss Hero?"

"Banishment Blade!" Gabrielle sent the captive goblins away.

"We defeated the goblin camp, and I didn't see any in the woods," Sinon noted. She was an excellent tracker as well as an archer. If she said there were no goblins, it was likely true. "So, what next?" she asked.

"Go report to the village elder," Scribe noted. "Also, I need to figure out how to write this up for the scrolls..."

"I'm looking forward to us resting tonight," Devas murmured as she cuddled Gabrielle, who blushed.

"I'm not expecting them to get much rest," Sinon noted to Scribe.

Scribe blushed.

Sinon brushed her hand over Scribe's, "Maybe you and I could...?"

Scribe went pinker.

Wolves howled in the distance.

"Father!" the princess sighed, "I'm scared."

King Homuru sighed, the grizzled old man sitting in a chair, in the dining hall of his Keep. "Easy, daughter... the wolves can't break in."

"But it's been WEEKS! Howling and prowling outside! Make them go away!" she weeped.

Homuru silently wished for a brave, heroic daughter, like the Hero Gabrielle. Instead, he had Sasuki, who hid and cried whenever danger came.

"More wine, my lord?" one of the knights offered.

"No, but thank you, Sirius," Homuru said wryly.

Homuru sighed. He was being harsh, he supposed. And it was deeply unpleasant, dealing with the howling and such.

"We should hunt all the wolves down!" young Tyrest demanded.

"We don't have the long spears..." Sirius started.

Sasuki murmured. "None of the maids complained about your long spear."

Sirius ignored that as he continued, "or the heavy nets needed. Trying to fight them with just swords is folly."

"Coward," Tyrest scowled.

"No, just not stupid," Sirius answered dryly.

"No fighting, boys," the old guard captain scolded them. She looked at the king, "I suggest locking up the keep, and issuing everyone extra wine rations. Maybe we can get drunk enough to sleep through the howling."

"Ha! A wise suggestion," Homuru admitted.

"Yes! Wine!" several others agreed.

Beer and wine was poured, drinking was done and eventually much of the keep slept...

"So, the wolves only come at night?" Gabrielle clarified as they took a wagon through the woods.

(Being a 'Hero' usually meant they could hitch a ride wherever. In this case they were borrowing a trader's wagon, in exchange for guard duty. Travellers had been jumped a few times, on this road...)

"Yes. But there's no sign of them in daylight, no tracks, and no trace of a den," Scribe noted.

"So it's supernatural," Devas noted.

"Or they're awful at tracking," Sinon had to point out.

"Ha," Gabrielle conceded that. She looked over at the elf, "Can you...?"

"I'll check for wolves when we get there," Sinon agreed, "but it's likely the tracks have already been obscured."

"So we'll have to wait until the wolves appear," Scibe nodded thoughfully.

"We couldn't go out after them tonight...?" Gabrielle offered.

"In the dark, with no spears or nets, outnumbered?" Sinon drawled.

"Okay, not a great plan," Gabriellle conceded.

"We could manage," Devas said confidently.

"As much as dying heroically fighting wolves sounds good, I'd rather not," Scribe noted.

"Spoil sport," Gabrielle teased.

"We're getting close to North Keep," the driver called.

They were in the far north, and a light dusting of snow was on the ground. The trees were bare of leaves, and looked eerily skeletal around them. The wind chilled them all...

Well, except for Devas, who lounged in her enchanted armor. "What?" she smiled and explained, "I'm hot blooded."

"I could have told you that," Gabrielle murmured.

The wagon rolled into the cleared area around the keep, coming up to a fortified gate. There was a staked, wooden fence surrounding the building.

"Welcome," the surly man on guard sighed.

"We are the Hero's Party, here to see the Duke," Scribe told him.

"Ah," the man visibly brightened. "Go on in."

As they neared the keep itself, Devas frowned slighly as she looked around.

"Something wrong?" Gabrielle asked.

"I can feel residue of something magic," Devas said. "And its strong."

"The wolves?" Scribe asked, "Or something else?"

Devas paused then admitted, "I'm not sure."

Gabrielle nodded, "Everyone, keep a eye out."

The wagon came to a stop, and the four hopped out as servants rushed to unload supplies. At the same time a well dressed man strode up to the group.

"I am Sebastian," he bowed slightly, "m'lord's steward. Please follow me inside."

As they walked to the main doors, Sinon was examining the snow covered ground. "If there were any wolf tracks, they've been covered up by people going out," she told Gabrielle.

"So we'll have to go out tomorrow morning, as expected," Gabrielle noted quietly.

The Keep had the feel of a smaller territory, away from the capital. It wasn't ornately decorated, and the internal feel was more practical. There were a LOT of suits of armor out on display, along with weapons and such.

The group reached the main hall, where a page announced, "Now entering: The Hero Gabrielle! Demon Lord Devas! Elven archer Sinon! And Scribe Alyssande Sugardrop the Third."

All three party members looked at Scribe in surprise.

"THAT is why I just ask people to call me Scribe," she sighed.

"I think it's cute," Sinon smirked.

Lord Homuru listened to that with amusement. He stood as he said, "Welcome to North Keep. We appreciate your help."

To be continued...

Notes: I'm kind of REALLY tired of Goblin Slayers' 'Always Chaotic Evil Rape Machine' Goblins. It's just icky.

Dipping into a bit of heroic fantasy. Will (probably) finish up that bit next chapter.

Five

"So, King Homuru, you think the wolves are supernatural?" Gabrielle the Hero asked.

"Apparently. They only appear at night, there are no tracks leading away from the keep...," the older man shrugged.

"We will go out an investigate once night falls, then," Gabrielle nodded.

"Hopefully I can track them," Sinon murmured.

Devas smiled coldly, "What is there to eat and drink? We must be ready for tonight!"

Homuru gave the demon lord a look, but nodded. "A repast has been prepared," he told them, "in our dining hall."

"Yes!" Devas cheered.

Scribe facepalmed.

Sebastian lead them to the food, bowing respectfully. "Please, enjoy," he said politely.

As Scribe joined in the eating, she felt a gaze on her. She looked around covertly, and saw the Princess Sasuki looking at her intently. 'Why though?' she wondered.

Sinon also noticed, and moved possessively nearer to Scribe.

Several of the nights had followed them in, and honestly looked a bit surly at needing the Hero's help. "I don't know why we need you," Sirius asked bluntly.

Gabrielle calmly met his eyes and said, "Do any of you have a magic holy sword that banishes monsters?"

Sirius grunted.

Tyrest, a younger knight, seemed less cranky. "Will you need any assistance tonight?" he asked them politely.

"It would be helpful to have someone who knows the area," Devas admitted.

Sinon frowned, "I don't need...,"

Scribe patted her arm as she said, "You're an excellent tracker, but locals can help too."

Sinon pouted slightly but nodded.

Scribe noticed Princess Sasuki get up and quietly leave the dining hall. 'Odd,' she mused, 'Please let her not be a fan.'.

0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0

One of the giant wolves jumped at Gabrielle, snarling angrily. She intercepted it with her sword and it just disappeared.

"I thought you had to banish them?" Scribe asked.

"Yes. What...?" Gabrielle looked at Devas.

"They're not real wolves, but magical summons," Devas slashed another with her claws.

"Summons?" Tyrest asked, "You mean someone did this to us?"

"Apparently," Devas agreed.

Scribe smashed a wolf over the head with her staff. Another blow 'killed' it.

"Sinon! No tacks, right?" Gabrielle confired.

Not sounding hugely happy about it Sinon confirmed, "No tracks. The paw prints just appear at one point."

"As expected," Devas agreed.

"Can you tell what brought these here?" Tyrest asked.

"Not me," Gabrielle admitted, "Devas?"

"Yes, but I'd have to be close," Devas admitted. "And as I wasn't looking, I'll have to start from scratch looking around the Keep."

"You think it was one of us?" Tyrest asked, scandalized.

"Who else is around here to do it?" Gabrielle pointed out reasonably.

"Aye," he conceded.

Sinon, from behind the fighters, was firing off arrows with deadly accuracy. She seemed to really like shooting through the eyes into the skull.

Scribe beat another wolf dead with her staff as she asked him, "Did no one go out when they first appeared?"

Tyrest looked sheepish as he said, "They looked like real wolves. Wolves that were twice the size as normal..."

"All right, fair enough," Scribe agreed.

Devas and Gabrielle beat the last of them, then they waited to see if more popped up. "All clear?" Sinon asked.

"Now we need to go back to the Keep and look for whomever cast this," Devas noted.

0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0

"May we speak with you privately, King Homura?" Gabrielle asked once they returned victorius to the Keep.

"Certainly," the older man lead them to a private office behind the throne room. "If it's a reward you wish to discuss...?"

"We have a problem," Gabrielle held up a hand to stop him. "Devas?" she asked.

Devas calmly explained how the wolves around the Keep had been actually summons, magic creations that looked like wolves.

Homura looked at them, appalled. "Someone did this to us?" he asked.

"Yes. And it was likely someone in the Keep," Devas said.

Homura frowned, "It couldn't be a nearby rival?"

"It would have to be nearby," Devas admitted. "Unless you have a enemy literally lurking out in the nearby forest?"

"I see," Homura said. "Can you find who did this?"

"We'll do our best sir," Gabrielle said firmly.

"Now what do I tell my subjects?" Homura sighed.

"We defeated them, but there's a chance they could return. So we're staying a extra day," Scribe suggested.

"Clever," Homura agreed. In fact that was pretty much what he said.

They entered back out into the throne room, then walked to a quiet spot in the corner. "So how do we do this?" Sinon asked.

"Using powerful magic leaves a residue, basically," Devas explained. "I should be able to sense it on the culprit."

"So we have to look at everyone in the keep," Gabrielle noted dubiously.

"At least it's only a hundred people," Scribe offered.

"Oy," Sinon sighed.

0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0

They started with the servants, something Gabrielle objected to. "Why assume the poor working folks did this?"

Devas ignored that, knowing how often plots started with servants.

"I think that chambermaid wants Gabrielle," Scribe noted.

Sinon looked at her blankly, having seen the busty wench nearly flash Scribe. 'Then again, her cluelessness is part of what makes her cute,' she sighed.

The kitchen staff and grooms all checked out too.

"That just leaves the knight and nobles," Devas frowned.

They entered the main hall again, where many knights and nobles were still celebrating their 'victory.' They swept the room, but no one stank of used magic.

"Father, I still think we should abandon the Keep. The wolves will return!" Princess Sasuki was talking to her father as they entered the room.

"I trust in the Hero," King Homura replied.

"Oh fuck," Devas blurted.

"What?" Gabrielle asked.

"It's the princess. She's the magic user," Devas said, seeing the remaints of magic around her.

"Really?" Scribe blinked.

"What do we DO?" Sinon demanded.

"Tell the king," Gabrielle said firmly, leading the way.

Princess Sasuki looked up, and she seemed to sense there was trouble. She gestured, and magic flared as two normal sized wolves appeared.

"WHAT...?" King Homura yelped.

"Kill them!" Sasuki ordered, the crowd in the hall screaming and running.

Luckily two wolves, even magic ones, weren't a problem for Gabrielle and Devas.

"Why did you do this?" Scribe asked Sasuki once she was restrained.

"I wanted Father to leave here," Sasuki grumbled.

"Why?" Sinon followed up.

"Have you looked outside?!" Sasuki yelped. "It's snowy and dark eight months out of twelve! There's no one near to court! I WANT TO GO SHOPPING!"

"Oh...," Gabrielle felt a faint bit of sympathy.
