Scribe watched in a certain degree of stunned disbelief as the ogre hammered at the young woman, but seemingly couldn't hurt her. The mostly black armor looked formidable, but somehow even striking her bare head did nothing!
Devas blinked, "The cursed Black Rose armor!"
"Cursed?" Scribe asked her.
"It reduces all your other abilities to zero," Devas explained to them, "but it also makes you completely invulnerable."
While the monsters were distracted attacking her, another woman, using twin knives, attacked and slaughtered the ogres, dodging every blow. She fought like a dancer, dodging and weaving gracefully then attacking powerfully.
"I don't think they need any help," Sinon the Archer noted wryly.
The two women noticed them, and they watched as the armored girl SLOWLY walked towards them. Apparently the armor curse even crippled her natural walking speed. Her friend walked along with her, smiling wryly.
"Hello! I'm Maple!" the girl beamed cheerfully.
"Sally," the other woman said a bit warily.
"I was watching that thing hit you," Scribe had to ask, "are you all right?"
"I'm fine! Totally fine!" the black clad girl beamed as she explained, "My armor protects me from everything."
"It's cursed, though," Devas noted, "have you tried to remove it?"
"She can't," Sally sighed, "which let me tell you is VERY inconvenient."
Both Sally and Maple blushed.
"Oh HO," Sinon murmured.
"I'm sorry to say I don't think my Magic Sword can help," Gabrielle admitted, "not without hurting you, anyway."
"It's okay," Maple shrugged, "I'm happy just being able to protect my teammates."
"Speaking of teammates, we should go meat Kasumi and the others," Sally noted.
"Right!" Maple nodded.
Without another word Sally swiftly picked up the other girl, then jogged off much faster than Maple could walk.
"Well, that's a thing," Scribe murmured.
"All right, we're heading for Crimonia to look into that demon bear we head about," Gabrielle said seriously.
"Let's go," Devas agreed.

Most cities in this country had Adventurer's Guilds, which came in handy. You could go in and receive monster hunting quests, claim rewards and so on. They also, generally, were pretty good sources of local gossip.
"Welcome!" the clerk at the desk smiled, "My name is Helen. How can I help you?"
"Hello," Scribe smiled, "we're looking into stories of a demon bear..."
"Demon bear?" Helen repeated, the oddest look on her face.
"Demon bear?" a adventurer behind them murmured.
"The Bloody Bear is at it again."
"I mean, I could totally see the Bear being a demon..."
The teller just ignored that as she said, "Well, yes we have a bear adventurer. I wouldn't call them a demon though."
A background adventurer snorted loudly.
Helen continued, "You're not going to hurt them, are you?"
"If they're not a demon, it should be fine," Scribe answered.
Helen nodded, though she still looked a bit dubious. "Well, the bear comes in once a day to check the quest boards, and hasn't been in yet, so..."
"We'll wait then," Scribe said.
"I've been talking to a few adventurers, the bear is supposed to be pretty scary," Sinon noted.
"Yeah, they apparently beat down other adventurers, and is very powerful magically too," Gabrielle said, nodding.
"So she could be one of my escapees," Devas noted.
"Or... possibly not," Sinon noted, seeing someone enter the building.
The figure was actually sorter than any of them... and was dressed in an odd looking baggy, bear styled garment.
"It's bear pajamas," Gabrielle blurted.
"Miss Yuna!" Helen called, "These people were looking for you."
The young woman looked at them a bit warily but said, "Hello, my name's Yuna. How can I help you?"
Everyone exchanged awkward glances. "You wouldn't happen to be a Demon Bear, would you?" Devas asked.
Yuna blinked, "That's a new one. No, not at all."
"I wonder how that rumour started," Gabrielle sighed.
"Well, some guys tried to bully me when I first became an adventurer," Yuna admitted, "so I beat them up. And that kind of got exaggerated in the re-tellings..."
"And she defeated a hundred goblins AND a goblin king," one adventurer added.
"And the forty foot long black viper."
"And the Kraken."
Everyone kind of looked at Yuna, who shrugged. "I keep busy," she said simply.
"Anyway," Devas nodded, "you're not one of my demons, and therefore not our problem."
"Demons?" Yuna asked, curious.
Scribe explained about the demons fleeing the demon kingdom and their attempting to round them all up.
"I... might have killed one of them," Yuna admitted after a moment, "I was actually bringing it in to have someone identify it."
They went outside and Yuna took the monster out of her magic storage.
"How did that even FIT?" Scribe blurted, looking at the massive giant.
"Yup, it's one of mine," Devas said with a twinge of regret. "He was a good guard... I guess once he was up here, he didn't know what else to do but fight."
"He did attack me first," Yuna felt the need to say.
"Thank you for stopping it," Gabrielle told her.

"Wait, you're NOT going to write up Yuna for your chronicles?" Sinon blinked.
"Yes," Scribe admitted.
"Because she doesn't want to be famous," Sinon clarified.
"Yes," Scribe repeated.
"BUT SHE RUNS AROUND IN THAT BEAR OUTFIT?" Sinon blurted, exasperated.
Scribe just shrugged helplessly.
"Ugh," Sinon stalked off.
The group was in an inn in Crimonia, as they were in town anyway, they decided to be comfortable. They would set out the next day, as the mountains not far away supposedly had 'demonic' monsters. It was worth checking anyway.
"Can we retire to our room, soon?" Devas purred. "I'm looking forward to us sleeping comfortably."
"Not that I expect much sleeping," Gabrielle noted.
Devas just smirked.
"Keep the noise down though," Sinon noted as she passed where they were sitting in the common room of the inn.
"No promises," Devas chuckled.
"You know, I wonder if Yuna is from where I came from?" Gabrielle mused aloud. "The bear pajamas look like something from home."
"Other people in your world wear that?" Sinon tried to imagine Gabrielle in them.
"Yes, but just to sleep..," Gabrielle noted.
"Aww," Devas pouted. "You'd be cute!"

"Can we stick around here a bit? The food is SO GOOD!" Gabrielle exclaimed, the group having visited the Bear Lounge for lunch.
"Did you notice both places are owned by the Bear Girl?" Sinon noted mildly.
"Yeah. Weird," Devas agreed.
Scribe shook her head ruefully. Before she could comment, they saw Helen from the Adventurer's Guild enter the common room, then head towards them.
"Trouble," Sinon muttered.
"Thank goodness you're still here!" Helen said, "There's been another demon sighting, towards the eastern end of the realm."
"Vacation's over, I guess," Gabrielle sighed. She addressed Helen, "Can we get a map?"
"Certainly!" Helen nodded.
"I'd like to buy some supplies before we go," Scribe added quickly.
"Sure," Gabrielle nodded, "meet you at the Adventurers' Guild?"
"Certainly," Scribe agreed as the young woman hurried off.
"Hopefully things will at least be interesting," Devas noted as the rest followed Helen.
It turned out it WAS one of Devas' former servants, a huge lizard man. They defeated it reasonably quickly, then moved on...

"You BOUGHT this slave girl?" Gabrielle growled, fingering her sword.
"Uh...," the 'Shield Hero' backed away nervously.
"Actually, all Naofumi's companions are slaves," Melty noted.
"WHAT." the girls chorused.
The tanuki girl, Raphtalia, quickly jumped in to defend him, "It's a little more complicated than that! Really!"
The heroines listened rather dubiously as she explained the slave enchantments increased the girls' ability to level up.
"Naofumi helped us alot! Plus he grooms me!" the cute bird girl added.
All the girls looked at Naofumi. "Not THAT way!" he blurted. "Really!"
"I still think we should kick his ass," Devas growled. Gabrielle, Sinon and Scribe all nodded their heads grimly.
"PLEASE don't," Melty sighed as she added, "of the four Legendary Heroes we summoned to save our kingdom, he's the only competant one."
Naofumi winced, "That sounds awful."
Melty shrugged, "Truth is truth."
"All right," Gabrielle decided, "we won't kill or beat you."
Scribe, Sinon and even Devas looked unhappy.
"BUT," Gabrielle said, "you will release all of them once you complete the task you were summoned for." She added, "Or you'll answer to us."
"Yes ma'am!" the Shield Hero nodded vigorously.
"Nice meeting you," the tanuki girl waved as they left.
"I REALLY do not like just letting him go," Devas muttered.
"Coming from a former Demon Queen...," Sinon noted.
"Even demons don't keep slaves," Devas said flatly.

And sometimes Gabrielle felt like a side character in someone else's story.
"WHERE IS HATSUMI?" the black haired girl growled, weilding an actual glowing katana.
"Eve," the extremely busty blonde in a witch outfit corrected.
"Whichever," the woman sighed.
There was a third woman with a staff, who was holding off Devas with glowing forcefields, oddly enough.
Gabrielle parried the glowing katana with her Hero's Sword, blinking as both flared magically.
"Hazuki! That's Yama Yama energy!" the blond witch noted.
Gabrielle had no idea what THAT meant, either.
"Where is my sister!" Hazuki swung at her again.
"UGH," the staff weilding mage grunted as Devas fought to reach her, "I can't hold her off much longer."
"Can you get their attention?" Scribe asked Sinon, nodding to the two swords women.
Sinon gracefully drew her bow, and sent arrowes whizzing by BOTH Gabrielle and the mystery woman's faces.
"Ack!" both women jerked back.
"WE DO NOT HAVE YOUR SISTER!" Scribe yelled. She paused and added more normally, "In fact we have no idea who that is."
The katana girl lowered her sword slightly, "Really?"
"No idea," Gabrielle agreed.
"But you all have Eve's energy on you," the busty witch noted.
"Lilith can track Eve by her energy," the staff mage noted.
"What does this Eve look like?" Scribe asked reasonably.
"She's Lilith's sister, blond haired too but long and straight," Hazuki said.
"Oh hell," Gabrielle realized.
"What?" Hazuki demanded.
"We encounted her a few days ago," Gabrielle admitted, "she just disappeared on us, and all four of us were kinda bathed in a weird green glow."
"Quill?" Hazuki asked the mage.
Quill waved her staff, then seemed to consult something. "Yes, they're registering the residual energies from Eve's passage between universes."
"oh, come on!" Lilith yelped, stomping her foot.
Hazuki sighed as she told Gabrielle, "Sorry for the whole attacking you, thing."
"If someone close to me vanished, I'd be attacking folks too," Gabrielle noted.
"Come on, let's go," Lilith pouted as Quill was apologizing to Devas.
"Good luck," Gabrielle called as the women disappeared.
"THAT was a waste of time," Devas sighed.
"Thank you for breaking up the fight, by the way," Gabrielle told Sinon. "I kind of lost my head a bit, there."
"I think you're a little TOO into it," Sinon noted.
"Heh heh heh," Gabrielle laughed uncomfortably.
"Come on, then," Devas sighed, "there's demons to hunt."
The four women found the small town not long after running into the four dimensional travellers. As the sun was setting, they decided to look for an inn.
"Welcome to the Dukedom of Claes," the gate guard smiled at them then asked, "you are Adventurers?"
"More or less," Gabrielle smiled warmly.
"Well, you'll probably be bored. The local knights watch over us," the guard noted, waving them in.
"Knights, huh?" Sinon murmured.
They soon found a reasonably nice inn, and the group chatted up the bartender. He poured them drinks as he explained, "Yes the daughter of our noble Duke is a Holy Paladin. She also has several heroic companions."
"Palasin? Urk," Devas muttered quietly.
"Problem?" Scribe asked quietly.
"Paladins and my kind don't get along well," Devas murmured. "Hopefully this won't be a problem..."
"If so, we'll protect you," Gabrielle promised.
Before anything else could be said, the tavern doors swung open, and a attractive brown haired woman in light armor entered. "Good evening, everyone!" she called out cheerfully.
"Good evening, Lady Claes," the crowd called back warmly.
"Paladin Katarine Claes," the bartender told them cheerfully.
"What," Devas blinked.

"Do you know anything about this Paladin, Katarina?" Gabrielle asked the others as they sat at the inn.
Scribe nodded, "She's nearly as famous as you, actually."
"No," Devas looked offended by that idea.
Scribe just ignored that comment. "The Paladin Katarina is somewhat legendary for not killing any of her opponents, but stopping any villains who attack the region. She also has won over certain enemies," she said.
"Really?" Sinon asked, interested.
"Hmm. The Dark Magus Mary Hunt and the Albino witch Sophia Ascart both joined her band after they fought her," Scribe explained.
"So, she's a harem protagonist too?" Gabrielle mused aloud.
"Huh?" the others blinked.
"Never mind," Gabrielle waved that off.
As they had been talking, the Paladin Claes had taken a table in a corner, and had three beautiful women sitting with her. One was a ... well endowed redhead in a low cut gown, another with silver hair and ruby red eyes, and a third who was a strikingly pretty blond.
"That's Hunt and Ascart, right?" Sinon murmured to Scribe. "Who's the other woman?" she asked her.
"Lady Maria Campbell, a high priestess," Scribe noted. She added, "She's a powerful 'faith' based healer."
"Here's hoping we don't end up fighting them," Devas sighed.
"You think that's likely?" Gabrielle asked.
"A Paladin AND a Priest?" Devas snorted. "Of course there will be a fight."
0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0
"We'd be happy to have your help," Paladin Claes beamed.
Devas blinked in surprise. "Really?" she started.
"Of course! You're the Hero with the Demon Banishing sword!" Paladin Claes continued "We've heard of you, too."
Gabrielle blushed slightly, "Ah, thank you."
Amusingly, all three of her companions were scowling at them jealously. "Katarina's doing it AGAIN," Sophia muttered/
"I KNOW," Mary Hunt groaned.
Maria Campbell just looked long-suffering.
"And please, call me Katarina," she added sunnily.
"AHEM," Mary Hunt cleared her throat.
"Could we spar?" Katarina ignored that as she addressed Gabrielle. "I rarely get to fight really good swordswomen. Just icky guys."
"Well..." Gabrielle hesitated, but couldn't bring herself to say no.
They ended up fighting with wooden swords outside the inn, as the sun was setting outside. Gabrielle was a bit startled at how GOOD of a fighter Paladin Katarina actually was. She clearly had trained very hard, for a long time. The one flaw was she wasn't an agressive fighter, but her defense was nearly unbeatable.
"That was SO FUN," Katarina beamed.
'FUN?!' Gabrielle though, exhausted after battering herself against the woman's defences.
"We're both so sweaty," Katerina noted. She brightened, "Let's go to the baths together!"
"NO," Mary, Sophia and Maria all yelped at once.
"Huh?" Katerina blinked innocently.
'Definitely a clueless harem protagonist,' Gabrielle thought with a sigh. By that point it was late, and everyone retired for the night.
Interestingly, Katarina and her companions just booked one room...
The next morning, they got back to business. "Okay, about the demon," Devas noted. "We came here following rumours..."
"We've had some bandit raids recently," Sophia noted, "it might be related to the rumours you may have heard."
"Hmm?" Scribe looked curious.
"Sora and his band of outlaws have been raiding outlying settlements," Maria Campbell said, "he's very elusive."
Katarina clapped her hands together excitedly as she said, "Oooh! There ARE stories he has a demon helping him!"
"I think it's just that Sora's second in command is such a fierce fighter," Mary pointed out to them reasonably.
"Well, we should probably check it out, still," Gabrielle noted.
"Agreed," Katarina said warmly.
Rather annoyingly it wasn't an actual 'demon' but instead a man with powerful dark magic. Raphael Walt, an associate of Sora, was using his power to convince other bandits and others to work with him and Sora.
"I feel bad for him, though," Katarina noted sadly.
"Lady Katarina. REALLY?" Mary Hunt sighed.
Sophia added, "He was a MURDERER, though."
"He was an exiled noble who lost his family, his title and...," Katarina shrugged.
"Well, I'm glad we caught them, and rounded up the bandits," Sinon said seriously.
"My Father and Mother want to thank you all for all this, too," Katerina told Devas and Gabrielle cheerfully.
"We really have other obligations," Gabrielle said quickly.
Mary, Sophia and Maria all sighed in relief, at seeing the women finally leaving...
0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0
"THAT was a waste of time," Sinon sighed.
"It wasn't THAT bad. We stopped a villain, after all," Gabrielle pointed out.
"And we got a good story for my reports," Scribe added.
Devas sighed, "Really?"
"We do seem to have more false alarms, lately," Gabrielle noted.
"Hmm," Sinon agreed.
"I think we've caught all of my people in this region," Devas admitted. "Which means we need to go out farther."
"Leave the islands for the Continent?" Scribe asked, referring to the huge landmass to the west of them.
"Hmm," Devas nodded, "we'll need to head to a port and charter a ship."
"I assume my being a Hero won't earn us a free ride?" Gabrielle guessed.
"Alas, no," Sinon assumed.
"So we'll need to earn some money first. Head to the local Adventurers Guild?" Gabrielle suggested,
"Sounds like a plan," Scribe agreed.
To be continued...
Notes: Katarina is from My Next Life As a Villainess, All Routes Lead to Doom. My take on her is, basically, if you train in the sword over EIGHT YEARS (as she does in canon) you're actually gonna get pretty good at it.
Heroing, I suspect, doesn't actually make much money. There's probably rewards from various nobles and such, but other than that...
