The Enterprise has been badly damaged, and the crew will have to band together to see her through. As they limp through space, trying to make repairs enough for a hot meal or working warp core, there is strain, and there is determination. The crew will not give up on their ship, and the Enterprise will give all she has in turns, though this does not mean it will be easy.

Spock is dying. There is an oath McCoy took once, an oath that defines the very essence of his being. First, do no harm. It drives him, compels him; defines him. Now he has broken it, and to break that oath is to betray his innermost self. McCoy himself has hurt Spock, possibly beyond repair, and his world has turned upside-down.

A Vulcan child is discovered to be a Romulan changeling, wired to become a spy. Innocent herself, she becomes the focal point of an interstellar incident as the Enterprise crew must help her before she becomes a danger to herself and the Federation.

At a reception celebrating a new entrant to the Federation, Spock becomes aware that their fellow Starfleet officers believe that he and Kirk are in an intimate relationship. He doesn't mention this to Kirk, whose normal behavior only reinforces the rumors. When Kirk learns of these rumors, he panics.

Chapters 24-28 Revised - 2293: Why the invaders had come pockmarked Q'a'ta'Orbin. Why they had left? That was a question begging an answer. But knowing the answer would not bring back what had been lost. The ingredients were still there but the recipe was gone.
