Rising to Duchess
"So, where's the closest gym we haven't been to yet?" asked Jonny. Kevin takes out the map and lays it down on the table of the Pokemon Center cafeteria; after looking at it for several seconds, he puts a finger on the map.
"There; Snowbelle City." said Kevin. "We have to travel south of Anistar City and go through Route 18 until we reach a place called Couriway Town, after that, we continue travelling south through Route 19, and then, after we travel west from there, we'll reach Snowbelle City."
"Judging by the name, I don't think we're done with our winter gear yet." said Nazz. "Hey, guys; you think we can fly down to the Battle Chateau? I want to try to go up the next rank."
"Sure, Nazz." said Kevin.
"Thanks, Kev." replied Nazz. Kevin puts the map away; after he picked up his Pokemon from the nurse, the group exited the Pokemon Center. After letting out their Pokemon that know Fly, they rode them; moments later, they arrived at the Battle Chateau.
"You ready, Nazz?" asked Kevin.
"As I'll ever be." replied Nazz. The group then enters the Battle Chateau; looking around, Nazz sees Mr. Hennessy. "Hi, Mr. Hennessy."
"Greetings, Marchioness Nazz." replied Mr. Hennessy. Nazz takes out her badge case and opens it; she shows her badges to Mr. Hennessy.
"Check it out; I only need one more badge to compete in the Kalos League." said Nazz.
"Splendid." replied Mr. Hennessy.
"I'm here to try and like, earn my next ranking." said Nazz.
"Very well; I should also let you know that Marquises and Marchionesses will also use two Pokemon in battle." said Mr. Hennessy.
"Got it." said Nazz. She turned towards Jonny. "Hey, Jonny; can I borrow the pokedex?"
"Sure, Nazz." replied Jonny, taking the pokedex out of his backpack and giving it to Nazz.
"Thanks, Jonny." said Nazz. She turns and walks away to find trainers to battle; a minute later, she came across a teenage boy wearing a Marquis cape. "Hey; would you like to have a battle with me?"
"Indeed, I would." replied the Marquis. Seconds later, they were standing several feet from each other; they each pulled out a pokeball. "Shuckle, go!" The Marquis throws his pokeball and releases a slender, yellow Pokemon encased in a red shell. Nazz pulls out the pokedex and points it at the Pokemon.
"Shuckle, the Mold Pokemon. It stores Berries inside its shell. To avoid attacks, it hides beneath rocks and remains completely still." said the pokedex.
"Go, Corsola!" said Nazz, throwing Corsola's pokeball and releasing her. "Corsola, Bubble Beam!" Corsola unleashes multiple glowing blue bubbles from her mouth, and they hit Shuckle, dealing super effective damage to it.
"Shuckle, use Wrap!" said the Marquis. Shuckle leaps at Corsola and wraps its limbs around her; it begins squeezing her, but not doing much damage.
"Bubble!" said Nazz. Corsola unleashes bubbles from her mouth, and they hit Shuckle, making it release Corsola and knocking it out. "Way to go, Corsola!" Corsola hops up and down, cheerfully. The Marquis returned Shuckle to its pokeball; he puts it away and pulls out another one.
"Carnivine, go!" said the Marquis, throwing a pokeball and releasing a Carnivine.
"Hey; that looks like the Pokemon that Mel jerk from the Lily of the Valley Conference Double D battled." said Nazz as she pulls out the pokedex and points it at Carnivine.
"Carnivine, the Bug Catcher Pokemon. It binds itself to trees in marshes. It attracts prey with its sweet-smelling drool and gulps them down." said the pokedex.
"If Double D can take down that Carnivine, then I can take down this one." said Nazz.
"Carvinine, Leaf Tornado!" said the Marquis. Carnivine spins around and creates a tornado with green leaves in it and it hits Corsola, knocking her out. "Splendid, Carnivine." Carnivine spreads its leaf arms and cheers. Nazz returns Corsola to her pokeball.
"You did your best, little dudette." said Nazz. She puts Corsola's pokeball away and pulls out another one. "Let's go, Pyroar!" She throws Pyroar's pokeball and releases her. "Pyroar, Work Up!" Pyroar becomes surrounded by a light red aura and her attack strength increases.
"Carnivine, Feint Attack!" said the Marquis. Carnivine looks to the side, making Pyroar do the same; Carnivine leaps at Carnivine while she wasn't looking and rams her, knocking her back.
"Pyroar, Flamethrower!" said Nazz. Pyroar unleashes a stream of fire, and it hits Carnivine, dealing super effective damage to it and knocking it out.
"Carnvine!" said the Marquis.
"We did it, Pyroar!" said Nazz. Pyroar lets out a roar.
"A fine battle." said the Marquis as he returns Carnivine to its pokeball.
"Thanks, dude." replied Nazz. The Marquis gives Nazz pokedollars and walks off. After returning Pyroar to her pokeball, she walks around, looking for more trainers to battle; as she does, she looks down at a lower part of the Battle Chateau and to her surprise, she sees Charlotte who was wearing a Marchioness cape, facing a teenage girl also wearing a Marchioness cape. Nazz decides to watch the battle.
Charlotte and the Marchioness each pull out a pokeball.
"Watchog, go!" said the Marchioness, throwing her pokeball and releasing a bipedal, reddish-brown furred, Pokemon with yellow stripes and beige cheeks, and a tail. Nazz points the pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Watchog, the Lookout Pokemon. When they see an enemy, their tails stand high, and they spit the seeds of berries stored in their cheek pouches." said the pokedex.
"Gliscor, go." said Charlotte, throwing her pokeball and releasing a large, bluish-purple, batlike Pokemon with pincers on the ends of its arms, a tail that had two barbs on the end of it, and black wings. Nazz points the pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Gliscor, the Fang Scorpion Pokemon and the evolved form of Gligar. Its flight is soundless. It uses its lengthy tail to carry off its prey... Then its elongated fangs do the rest." said the pokedex.
"Gliscor, Screech." said Charlotte. Gliscor lets out a loud cry and releases soundwaves onto Watchog, weakening its defense.
"Watchog, Hyper Fang!" said the Marchioness. Watchog runs at Gliscor while its teeth shined and it bites Gliscor, dealing damage to it.
"Ice Fang." said Charlotte. Gliscor flies at Watchog while its fangs become coated in ice and it bites Watchog, dealing damage to it, and encasing it in ice.
"No! Try to break free, Watchog!" exclaimed the Marchioness.
"Gliscor, Night Slash." said Charlotte. Gliscor flies at Watchog while a black aura surrounds one of its pincers and it slashes Watchog with it, breaking the ice, and knocking Watchog out.
"Watchog, no!" said the Marchioness. She returns Watchog to its pokeball and she puts it away; she then pulls out another pokeball. "Audino, go!" The Marchioness throws her pokeball and releases a bipedal, pink and cream colored Pokemon. Nazz points the pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Audino, the Hearing Pokemon. It touches others with the feelers on its ears, using the sound of their heartbeats to tell how they are feeling." said the pokedex.
"Audino, Take Down!" said the Marchioness. Audino runs at Gliscor and rams it, knocking it back, but it remained in the air; Audino flinches in pain from the recoil damage of Take Down.
"U-Turn." said Charolotte. Gliscor flies at Audino and strikes it with one of its pincers, knocking Audino back; Gliscor suddenly returns to its pokeball.
"Why did Gliscor return to its pokeball?" asked Nazz, getting Charlotte's attention.
"U-Turn returns the Pokemon that uses the move to its pokeball." replied Charlotte. Another pokeball Charlotte had opened, releasing a bipedal, dark gray Pokemon that looked like a doll. "And releases another Pokemon in its place." Nazz points her pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Banette, the Marionette Pokmeon and the evolved form of Shuppet. Strong feelings of hatred turned a puppet into a Pokémon. If it opens its mouth, its cursed energy escapes." said the pokedex.
"Shuppet must've evolved." said Nazz. Charlotte returned her attention to the Marchioness. "Banette, Sucker Punch." Banette rushes towards Audino and punches it in the chest, knocking it back.
"Audino, use Attract!" said the Marchioness. Audino winks at Banette, releasing a glowing heart that floats to Banette and hits it; hearts formed in its eyes, and it smiles at Audino.
"Banette, use Feint Attack." said Charlotte. Banette overcame his attraction to Audino and points up; as Audino looks up, Banette rushes at Audino and strikes it in the chest with one of its arms; knocking Audino out.
"No!" exclaimed the Marchioness.
"I guess love doesn't conquer all." said Charlotte. Banette chuckles in response. The Marchioness drops to her knees and returns Audino to its pokeball. She walks to Charlotte and gives her pokedollars.
"You raised your Pokemon well." said the Marchioness.
"Whatever." replied Charlotte. The Marchioness walks away; Charlotte returns Banette to his pokeball and looks up at Nazz for several seconds before walking away.
"Charlotte's a strong trainer; I really need to step up my training." said Nazz. She walks away to find more trainers to battle. She battled several Marquises and Marchionesses for over an hour; being sure to give potions to her Pokemon to keep their strength up. Nazz is currently facing another Marchioness.
"Go, Seadra!" said the Marchioness, throwing a Lure Ball and releasing a light blue and cream colored, scaled, seahorse-like Pokemon. Nazz points the pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Seadra, the Dragon Pokemon, and the evolved form of Horsea. It is capable of swimming backwards by rapidly flapping its winglike pectoral fins and stout tail." said the pokedex.
"Dedenne, go!" said Nazz, throwing Dedenne's pokeball and releasing her.
"Seadra, Focus Energy!" said the Marchioness. Seadra closes its eyes and lets out a deep breath.
"Dedenne, Charge Beam!" said Nazz. Dedenne fires a beam of electricity from her paws, and it hits Seadra, dealing super effective damage. Dedenne begins surging with energy and her special attack strength increases.
"Seadra, Brine!" said the Marchioness. Seadra releases a powerful stream of water from its mouth, and it hits Dedenne, landing a critical hit and knocking Dedenne to the ground; she struggles to get up. "My Seadra has the Sniper Ability, which makes moves that landed critical hits even stronger."
"Dedenne, Parabolic Charge!" said Nazz. Dedenne forms a large ball of electricity above her; streams of electricity are unleashed from it and some of them hit Seadra, dealing enough damage to knock it out; some of Dedenne's wounds heal. "Great work, Dedenne." The Marchioness returned Seadra to its Lure Ball; she puts it away and pulls out a Great Ball.
"Let's go, Hippowdon!" said the Marchioness, throwing the Great Ball and releasing a large, bluish-gray, hippo-like Pokemon. Nazz points the pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Hippowdon, the Heavyweight Pokemon and the evolved form of Hippopatas. It blasts internally stored sand from ports on its body to create a towering twister for attack." said the pokedex. A sandstorm suddenly appears.
"Where is this storm coming from?" asked Nazz.
"Hippowdon's Sand Stream ability makes sandstorms appears when she's summoned into battle." replied the Marchioness.
"Dedenne, Play Rough!" said Nazz. Dedenne runs at Hippowdon and jumps on her head; she begins hitting Hippowdon on it, then jumps onto the ground.
"Earthquake!" said the Marchioness. Hippowdon begins jumping up and down, making the floor shake, dealing super effective damage to Dedenne and knocking her out. "Excellent work, Hippowdon." Hippowdon lets out a yell in response. Nazz returns Dedenne to her pokeball.
"You did good, little dudette." said Nazz. She puts Dedenne's pokeball away and pulls out a Great Ball. "Florges, go!" She throws Florges' Great Ball and releases her. "Florges, Grass Knot!" Florges' eyes glowed green and two glowing green vines come out of the floor near Hippowdon's feet, and they wrap around them; Hippowdon falls to her side and was dealt super effective damage. "The heavier the Pokemon Grass Knot is used on, the greater the damage, especially since Hippowdon's weak against grass type moves."
"Well played. Hippowdon, Earthquake!" said the Marchioness. Hippowdon begins jumping up and down, releasing a shockwave towards Florges.
"Flower Shield!" said Nazz. Florges releases a wave of flower petals from her body, and they increased her defense before the shockwave reached her, receiving only minor damage. Sand from the sandstorm hits Florges, hurting her.
"Take Down!" said the Marchioness. Hippowdon charges at Florges and rams her, knocking her back; Hippowdon flinches in pain from the recoil damage of Take Down.
"Use Petal Dance!" said Nazz. Florges spins around and releases a spiral of pink flower petals from her body, and it hits Hippowdon, dealing enough damage to knock her out. "We did it, Florges!" Florges does a bow in response. The Marchioness returns Hippowdon to her pokeball.
"That was a fine battle, Nazz." said the Marchioness.
"Thanks." replied Nazz. The Marchioness gives Nazz pokedollars and she walks away.
"Marchioness Nazz." Nazz hears Mr. Hennessy call out. She looks to see him walking over to her while carrying a red cape. "I am pleased to inform you that you have earned enough victories over the Marquises and the other Marchionesses to earn you the rank of Duchess; Congratulations."
"Yeah!" said Nazz, jumping up while raising a fist; she removes her Marchioness cape and gives it to Mr. Hennessy, who gives her the Duchess cape and she puts it on. Minutes later, she walks to the front of the Battle Chateau where Kevin, Jonny, and Rolf were sitting on a sofa. They see her approaching; they stand up and walk over to her.
"Check it out; I'm a Duchess now." said Nazz, spreading her Duchess cape.
"Awesome." said Kevin.
"Rolf is pleased with your accomplishment." said Rolf.
"Way to go." said Jonny.
"Thanks, guys." replied Nazz. "Let's get back to Anistar City; my Pokemon really need some healing."
"Sure, Nazz." said Kevin. The group then walk out the Battle Chateau's doors.
At another part of the Battle Chateau, Charlotte and her Gothorita were facing a Marquis and a battered Zangoose which was breathing heavily.
"Psychic." said Charlotte. Gothorita's eyes glowed blue and a blue shockwave comes towards Zangoose and hits it, knocking it to the ground with swirly eyes.
"No, Zangoose!" said the Marquis. He drops to his knees and returns Zangoose to its pokeball. He walks to Nazz and gives her pokedollars. "Good battle." Charlotte doesn't reply and walks away. Mr. Hennessy walks to Charlotte.
"Marchioness Charlotte; you have won enough battles to earn the Duchess ranking." said Mr. Hennessy, holding out a Duchess cape. Charlotte unties her Marchioness cape and lets it fall to the floor, then takes the Duchess cape and puts it on. Moments later, she walks out of the Battle Chateau.
