The Mii Brawler, Mario, Little Mac, and Robin were already waiting for him when he arrived. The Mii Brawler and Robin were the only people Dimentio did not recognize, as the Mii Brawler was a male wearing yellow with protective gloves and boots, and Robin was a silver haired male with black robes and brown boots. He held a book in his left hand.
"Are you ready to get started?" Mario asked.
"Sure."
"Well, in case you don't know, I'm Robin." He held out his hand. "It'll be a pleasure working with you, Dimentio."
Dimentio shook his hand. "The pleasure is mine, Robin."
"My name's Boxnin," the Mii introduced. "I'm not in my usual gear right now, but if you see a brawler wearing a vampire costume and a spiny hat, that's me." He was dark skinned, with black pointed hair. His yellow eyes matched his clothes.
"And you already met me," Little Mac said with a wave.
"Master Hand said the course will be selected at random, but I've-a narrowed it down to the top few that work well for training," Mario said, holding up a sheet of paper. "We'll need one good for us to work with, and also flat so Dimentio can use his powers."
"He's a magic user?" Boxnin asked. "Then why am I here?"
"Magic in our world can run out, you can say. It's-a in case he gets tired, so he knows how to fight hand-to-hand."
"Or ill, in my case," Dimentio mentioned. "I have noticed that anytime I start to use my abilities too often, I get sick to the stomach."
"Well, that explains why Master Hand wanted me here then." Robin opened his book and pulled out his lightning-shaped sword. "Are we ready?"
"I think so," Little Mac said. "What about you, Dimentio? Ready?"
"I have fought a few battles during my lifetime. I can handle anything." He crossed his arms. "And you are an idiot to underestimate me in any sort of way."
The course was a wide area with three platforms floating above the main arena. Mario hopped out of a pipe, Little Mac tossed off a pink jacket, and then the battle started. Dimentio couldn't see the other two before it started, but they both hopped down from a higher platform.
"This is training, so it has unlimited time," Boxnin explained. "So we get plenty of time to practice!" He punched his palm. "I hope you're ready for us, Dimentio!"
He prepared to fight. "Well? Who is come at me first?"
"Before we all attack willy-nilly," Mario started, "we need to cover the-a basics."
Dimentio fixed his stance. "Basics? I told you before and I say it again, I have fought many others before. I even battled your brother."
"The rules here are a bit...different," Little Mac said. "You have certain attacks you can use. For example, we have a normal attack, which would be just a punch or basic attack from your weapon."
"But you can turn it into a combo," Boxnin continued, "by repeatedly attacking them. For example..."
He punched Mario, as he was standing closest to him. He sped up the attacks, then ended it with a kick. Mario skid across the floor, then stood back up and came back.
"Combos are more powerful, and rack up damage faster depending on how fast you attack. Show me something basic, like a punch or something."
Dimentio held up his hand, a purple, eight-pointed shuriken appearing above his head. He shot it at Boxnin. He blocked it.
"Nice!"
"What?! Y-you cheater! Nobody can just avoid my magic like that you-you-!" He couldn't think of an insult. "What even is a Mii?!"
"Mario!" Mario exclaimed, misunderstanding Dimentio's sentence.
Boxnin started doing warm-ups. "Alright. Now think on how you can turn that into a combo. Remember, it has to be based around that attack. If you want to do other stuff, we'll explain that in a bit."
Dimentio, staying silent, created a single copy of himself and they both fired the shuriken at Boxnin. The brawler blocked the first, but the second one hit him as soon as his guard went down.
"Okay, good. But can you cast that thing faster."
"No. Next question."
"What about the other you? Can you get rid of it or..."
Dimentio snapped, and it vanished. "They cannot be touched, so you have no need to worry about attacking others of me." He lowered his voice. "It all depends on if you can find the correct one..."
"Alright," Robin said. "Now we have special attacks, which are a bit more complicated."
"This seems pretty simple so far," Dimentio said.
"Special attacks are split into four different kinds; idle, side, up, and down."
"Nevermind, you lost me."
"Like me, you probably have a magic meter. They show it on the recordings when they display them on the billboard above the lobby. And if your magic meter runs out, you can't use magic for a bit before it refills."
"That's where brawling comes in," Little Mac said.
"We'll go over that in a minute," Mario mentioned. "We should-a let Robin finish first."
Robin flipped to a page in his book. "An idle special attack is like this."
He faced Mario and shot a small ball of lightning at him. He then casted it again, holding it until his sword glew for a second and let it hit Mario again.
"You use those ones when you stand still."
"So it would be like the attack I used on Boxnin."
"Yes, precisely."
Dimentio summoned the shuriken again, holding it and the clone's until Robin gave him a nod, then tossed them at Boxnin again. Boxnin blocked them both that time.
"Nice! That was more powerful than last time you used that, I could tell!" He gave Dimentio a thumbs-up.
Dimentio smiled a bit. "Thank you, I suppose? Nobody has ever thought a basic attack from me was impressive before."
"A side special attack is one you can use while moving. For that, Mario will demonstrate."
Mario ran towards Little Mac, then suddenly skid on his heels and pulled out a water nozzle backpack. He sprayed Little Mac with it.
"That's cold!" He wiped the water off his face.
"Those are used most often," Robin continued. "They're a great way to take them by surprise, if they think you are going to stop and attack."
Dimentio landed on the ground. "I usually find no reason to run about, but...I feel I can make an exception for this instance."
He prepared himself, then charged Mario. Mario blocked, but Dimentio dropped to his side and tripped Mario with a slide that was also done with his clone at the same time. He stood back up and dusted off his pant leg.
"Well? Is that good?"
"Are you-a kidding?" Mario jumped. "That took me completely by surprise! That was nice! And using your copy ability was a nice-a touch to it!"
Dimentio could feel his face getting hot, and looked away. "Ooh, you! Stop that behavior! You are going to make me blush!"
"Alright," Robin resumed. "Now a down special is probably the hardest to do. Most people, like Marth or Ike, have counter attacks. Those you have to time just right or they won't work."
Dimentio dropped to his knees and tripped Mario again with a leg sweep. He stood back up.
"Was that right?"
"Well," Little Mac said, rubbing the back of his head, "that's more like a basic down attack, but you've got the spirit of battle in you. So that's great!" He gave him a smile.
Mario and Boxnin decided to demonstrate a down special. Boxnin stood as close to Mario as he could, and then Mario pulled out something yellow and wacked Boxnin with it. It managed to flip him around.
"I see. That, I can do. Mario, come here."
Mario walked over to him. Dimentio dropped to his knees again.
"One step closer, if you would."
Mario took half a step closer when Dimentio moved his hand towards Mario's foot, and he flipped around, vanishing for half a second.
"Oh yeah! You can-a go 3D! I-a almost forgot about that!" Mario faced him again. "Nice way to include that!"
"I told you to stop doing that!"
"What, complimenting you?"
"Yes, that thing you do when you tell me my abilities are impressive, then make me get all embarrassed and flustered and have no idea what to do next! That!"
They all shared a look. "Have you...never gotten a compliment before?"
"Nobody ever said anything I could do was impressive, except for Izuku and Olly. But they are different, they think everything is impressive or 'cool' in some way."
"That's kind of sad," Little Mac said. "'Cause before the Smash Tourneys, I never knew magic existed. So you seem pretty cool to me."
"Anyways," Robin interrupted, "there is one more thing: up specials."
"They are similar to the down ones, correct?" Dimentio questioned.
"Yes, except you jump as you do them. Allow Mario to show you."
Mario rushed Little Mac, who jumped from the attack. He landed on one of the floating platforms. Mario jumped under him, then turned gold and hit him from underneath. Coins flew out when Mario made contact with him.
"Hm? I have never seen you manipulate your form before, Mario." Dimentio tapped a hand against the bottom of his mask.
Without warning, Dimentio kicked Mario into the air and floated up to him. He used one of the shuriken again, slicing Mario's back with it and sending him a little higher before he thudded to the ground.
"Ta-dah! I have chosen an up special!"
Mario stood up. "Great! Now that you know the basics, you're ready for-a the more advanced stuff!"
"Alright. I am ready."
"One thing is, you are not allowed to fly. You have to-a stick with floating or running. You can have more floaty-like jumps though, like Sora does. But flying isn't allowed because it could be used to cheat."
"Understandable," Dimentio said, landing on the ground again.
"First advanced lesson," Boxnin said, coming towards him and punching his palm. "You need to learn how to block attacks. There's a few things to know beforehand though."
"Speak, Mii."
He blocked, a small grey glow coming from him. He stopped blocking. "That's your shield, if you could see the ball of glow around me. It'll slowly shrink the more you hold it down, so careful with that. Attacks make it shrink faster. When it breaks, you'll be stunned. If you get stunned then well...you'll be pretty open for attacks. Try attacking me."
Dimentio put his hand into a fist and punched Boxnin's shield. He hesitated, then punched it again. He kept doing so until the shield broke and Boxnin stumbled backwards.
"See...? That's how you stun...people...Now hit me with...everything you've got while I'm...still stunned...!"
Dimentio simply used his idle special on him three times, in which he complimented him on again.
"See? Pretty simple, huh? Now I'm going to attack you, so you better block it."
Dimentio, instead of using a shield, teleported behind Boxnin and kicked him over.
"I have no clue how to shield, Boxnin."
"Oh. Just block with your hands." He turned around and charged a punch.
Dimentio blocked it, a loud pop sounding from the impact.
"Ooh, a perfect block on your first try! Nice!"
Dimentio punched him in the face while his guard was down.
"You learn fast!"
"Next lesson," Little Mac walked up to him. "If you and somebody else attack at the same time, your attacks cancel out. If you're fast enough, you can attack them during the small window of opening."
"Shall we dance?" Dimentio prepared himself.
The rest of the training went by really fast. He was actually having fun with them, and hid his disappointment of the training session ending. Mario told him that his first battle was tomorrow, so he wouldn't have to wait long.
He could hardly sleep that night.
He couldn't wait to compete in the championship.
