An alarm went off, waking Dimentio up from a deep sleep. Link turned off the alarm and woke Sora up.
"Time to go. The tourney starts in an hour, and we need to eat breakfast and get ready for the morning."
Sora moaned and sat up. His hair was a horrible mess. "What? Why do we have to get up so early? It's like three in the morning!"
Dimentio yawned. "I agree. I finally got some rest in a while. Why can we not sleep in for a bit?"
"Sorry, but if we're late, Master Hand'll be pretty mad. I want to sleep in too, believe me."
Sora fixed his hair by brushing it back and letting it snap back into shape. "You're starting to sound like Donald. Responsibility this, responsibility that...At least he let me sleep!"
Link started brushing his hair. "if you two don't get up, I'm turning the light on."
"Okay! I'm getting up!"
Dimentio sat up and took off his mask. There was a small crack on the nose, meaning he mostly slept on his face that night.
"I broke my mask..."
"Did you?" Link asked. "I can fix it, if you want."
"It is not terrible. Just a small crack. I can fix it before the round. I just need to find something before I do..."
Sora turned on the light after a few minutes. Thankfully, Dimentio had his contacts in already. They finished getting ready for the morning, then left the room. Fawful ran past, holding a Yoshi egg. Yoshi also ran past, chasing Fawful.
"Yoshi!"
"Fawful got the egg of eggyness!"
"I wonder what they're doing," Link said. "But Yoshi looks pretty mad."
They walked to the food court. Not many people were in there, for now. Ganon, Bowser, Sephiroth, and Pikachu were up and at their table. A woman with short blond hair walked past, and waved to Fawful as he hurried past with the Yoshi egg.
"That's Min Min," Link explained. "She owns the Noodle Shop down Store Street."
"Yoshi, yoshi!"
"Fawful will not be giving the egg back to the Yoshi! Fawful wants the egg of eggyness because it is Fawful's blaster!"
He cracked it open on his knee, and his blaster fell out. A man with brown hair and a white headband came over.
"You ate his blaster in your sleep, which isn't the first time you've done that! Last time, you ate my mace!"
Crazy Hand entered the room. "Mail!" He dropped a giant handful of letters onto the floor and floated away.
People started sorting through the pile. Sora excitedly opened his.
"It's from Kairi! She said, 'Good luck with the fight! I'll be watching you from the castle.'"
Link opened his. "From Beedle." He cleared his throat. "Let's see here...'I hope you catch some rare beetles for me.' Of course he'd say that. What about you, Dimentio? Did you get a letter?"
"Knowing me? Likely not." Dimentio sighed and looked through the remaining letters nonetheless.
Olly cheered. "Olivia's going to come here and watch from the stands! I need to be extra good for her!"
"Queen Bean!" Fawful beamed. "She wishes me all the lucky!"
Dimentio actually found a letter with his name on it. "Hm? Somebody actually sent me a letter? That is strange."
"Who's it from?" Sora asked.
He opened it. "There is a folded sheet of paper in here. Who folds a letter this many times? Wait, is that green? Why is the paper green?"
Mimi unfolded out of the envelope and kissed his cheek. She walked away, winking.
"H-have mercy..." He nearly fainted. "Wait, Mimi! The guards!"
She turned around. "The what?"
Crazy Hand appeared from nowhere and grabbed her by the hair. "I got the trespasser! Bye bye!" He threw her out the window.
Dimentio ran over. "Mimi! Oh Grambi...Are you okay?!"
She twitched on the floor, then hopped to her feet with a twirl. "I'm just fine! I'm one of the toughest arachnids out there! I'll be watching you from the stands, and I'll be cheering the loudest for you, Dimentio!"
"Au revoir!" He waved to her as she walked off. He leaned on the windowsill. "What a woman..."
"Who was that?" Sora asked.
"That was Mimi...the love of my life. She mailed herself to me, just to wish me luck with a kiss." He sighed dramatically. "She always finds new ways to surprise me..."
Olly came over. "Oh? Mimi did something romantic, huh?"
He shoved Olly away from him and walked back to his table. "So, who is Kairi?"
"She's a friend from my home island." Sora sat down as well.
"Ah."
Link sat down. "Do you want me to get you something? I'll avoid dairy this time."
"Sure, if you want. I am not really hungry right now..."
"You will be. Most people aren't hungry when they wake up." He up and left.
A person of blocky proportions came over, wearing a blue shirt that stood out from his dark tan skin. He was holding a tray on his arms, as he had no hands.
"Can I sit here?"
"Uh, sure. Sora left with Link to get some breakfast, but I can pull over another seat."
"No need." He put his tray down and pulled over a chair himself. "I couldn't find anywhere else to sit, so I've been sitting by myself for the past few days."
"I understand that feeling. I only sit here because Sora and Link are my roommates."
Sora and Link came back. Link handed Dimentio his tray. "Huh? Steve?"
He waved.
Sora sat down. "Nice! Now we have a full table!"
"Your name is Steve? I am known as Dimentio, the Charming Magician."
"A magician?" Steve asked. "So you know magic tricks and stuff? The only thing magic where I'm from is an Enchantment table."
Dimentio flicked his hand to the side, small sparkles following his hand. "You can say that. I can do something for you, if you'd like."
He looked down at the tray. There were four squares of bread covered in seasonings, a banana shake, and a few strawberries.
"Don't worry, the shake's just a fruit shake," Link said. "There's no milk, I checked."
"Perhaps I should discuss my allergy with Master Hand. Some of that food you have there looks really...good..."
"Lactose intolerant?" Steve asked. "I can't eat peanuts, so we share something in common."
"Hm. So we do." He took a drink of the shake, then stopped.
"Is everything okay?" Link asked. "Was I wrong about the milk?!"
"Ohohohaha! That is the best thing I have ever tasted!" He drank the rest of it in one go, without hesitation. "Aahh..." He grabbed his head, kicking his feet. "Argh! It fights back!"
"I was about to warn you about the brainfreeze," Sora said. "You drank that faster than I've ever seen anybody drink anything before! That should be like, a record or something."
Dimentio moaned. "The pain...is finally subsiding."
"All fighters," Master Hand's voice said over the speakers, "have five minutes left to finish their breakfast. After that, please up your tables and the floor around, and come to the square. Thank you."
Link scarfed down the rest of his food and left to warm up. Steve finished next, and made sure to sweep the floor by another table before he left. Sora was just finishing up when Dimentio quickly ate the rest of his food.
"Careful! Don't choke on it like you did with that hot dog!"
Sora and Dimentio headed to the square, and somebody mentioned the billboard. They looked up to find the tourney results have been set up. Sephiroth was the champion, so his icon appeared above the trophy on the match display. Dimentio looked up and down it until he saw his icon, which was, just like everybody else's, a drawn image of his head with no visible face. He was the last battle of the qualification round.
"Oof. Looks like you've got a while." Sora ruffled his hair. "And I'm right before you, nice! Hopefully we can have a face-off!"
"But what should I do in my free time?"
"Uh...Why don't you ask Master Hand? He's right there."
Dimentio walked over to Master Hand. "Pardon me, but I have a question."
"Yes? What is it, Dimentio?"
"What should I do in my free time here? I actually have no clue what to do."
"Hmm...There's a weird cave we found a while back. It's connected to a world in your mind. I call it Classic Mode, since you journey through to fight a big boss at the end, just like a classic fighting game."
"I see."
"You can also do battles with others for fun, or Smash Run."
"Smash Run?"
"You go through a maze-like thing and fight enemies for stats. In the end, the stats will be measured and you'll get a small reward if you have the most of a certain type. Then there's a final game after that, based off the stat that was average on most fighters. If you win, you get another prize."
"And I am assuming this 'Smash for fun' is a free-for-all battle arena?"
"Pretty much. Did you get that?"
Dimentio nodded.
"Great!" He gave Dimentio a thumbs-up. "Now go out there and have fun! Try to find people who won't be doing things for a while, and see what they want to do."
Dimentio found that Sora, Steve, Pokémon trainer, Banjo and Kazoie, Junior, Duck Hunt, and Joker weren't going to be in battles for a while and didn't already have something to do. Dimentio got a sudden interest in Joker after seeing he too always wore a mask, and was generally themed around a deck of cards.
"So, why'd you want to talk to us for?" Sora asked.
"Yeah! The rest 'o' the Koopalings and I were going to do this togeda!" Junior said, Dimentio not realizing just how young he sounded.
"I wanted to ask...what did you want to do? Master Hand gave me a few suggestions and I wanted to see what you all wanted to do." Dimentio held up a sheet of paper.
Steve tapped his mouth with his thick arm. "What did he say?"
"A free-for-all, Smash Run, or Classic Mode."
"Smash Run sounds fun," Banjo said.
"But I wanted to try Classic Mode!" Sora rested his hands on the back of his head. "Man, we're just going to keep disagreeing with each other!"
"Wait, I suppose we should introduce ourselves first." Dimentio bowed. "I am known as Dimentio."
"Sora."
"Banjo," he said, Kazoie interrupting him before he could introduce her.
"I remember you! You were in deep doo-doo with Master Hand earlier! He was trying to get you to admit you snuck in!"
"But," Dimentio said calmly, "we did not. He has actually been treating me kinder since then. I wonder if Olly has something to do with that..."
"Anyways, I'm Kazoie."
The Pokémon Trainer pumped his fist. "My name's Ash! Nice to meet you!"
Duck Hunt barked, and Mallard quacked.
"Joker," Joker said.
"Alright, now that that's out of the way..." Sora started. "What are we going to do?!"
Pikachu ran over on all fours and jumped onto Ash's shoulder. "Oh yeah! This guy's Pikachu! He's counted as a separate fighter here, but he's my Pokémon."
"Oh," Steve said suddenly. "I'm Steve. I just thought of something, Dimentio."
"Oh? Do tell." He folded his arms.
"You're thin, like paper. Are you actually paper?"
"What kind of question is that? Of course I am paper! You will never see another folk like me in any dimension except my own!"
"Oh, cool!" Sora exclaimed. "So do you die in water or something?"
"It depends on the strength and amount, but yes, we can get soggy. I am unsure about death, though. If we died in water, most of our world would just be a giant death trap."
"I 'memeber a paper Papa once," Junior said. "An' there was a paper me too."
"Yes, there are also paper versions of your siblings!"
"Can you fold yourself?" Kazoie asked.
"Um...Olly can. Mario can roll into a tube, and we can get crumpled...But that is all I know."
Olly and Fawful came over. "Oh, Dimentio! Just the jester I wanted to see!" He looked at Joker. "Hey, he kind of looks like you, doesn't he? Wears black, has a mask, black hair..."
"What do you want? We are having a discussion here."
"Fawful and I were going to try some of the food stands here, and wanted to know if you were coming. You need to gain some weight, Dimentio! You're like a twig! I know you technically keep throwing up every time we get into something dangerous, but you need to eat something. You can still die from starvation, even if you are paper."
"Not every time!" Fawful said. "What about the thing when Izuku heard the song things?"
"Oh, that too. That wasn't technically dangerous, was it? You still ended up throwing up. I'm very concerned for your health. And you should really discuss with Master Hand about your lactose intolerance if you want to enjoy dinner tonight. We're going to have a cheese fondue fountain as a part of dessert! But...that was just a rumor and-Why is he so square?! Is he papercraft?!" Olly pointed a triangle hand at Steve.
"No." He shrugged. "I'm just blocks."
"Oh." He smiled at Dimentio. "Anyways, we're going to be on Store Street, if you change your mind and want to join us. I'll see you later!"
"Well he talked a lot," Kazoie said.
"I'm known to be chatty," Olly said. "But that just means I like you! Your feathers are beautiful, by the way! They remind me of the Fire Vellumental." He flew away.
"The what?"
Dimentio shrugged. "If he means a giant bird he can fold into, then you should ask him about it. I know little to nothing about Origami Folk. That...does not get me a good reputation, as I currently am his official jester...Perhaps I should learn more about their kind."
"Bye bye!" Fawful ran off. "Olly, wait for Fawful! Fawful has the slowness of legs!"
"Why does he talk like that?" Sora asked. "It's kind of funny."
Dimentio shrugged again. "That is just how he speaks, I suppose. But we should really decide on something."
They all stayed silent.
"We could do Smash Run," Joker finally said after a few minutes.
"Sounds like a deal!" Dimentio said. "Now, where do we go?"
Master Hand appeared, scaring everyone except Joker and Steve. "I heard you needed help?"
"You need to stop doing that," Kazoie said.
"To do Smash Run, you need to take a shortcut through Store Street, and then take the path to the left. Store Street is down thataway." He pointed towards the direction Olly and Fawful went. "Have fun!" He snapped, and teleported away.
"Ah, so that is how he does it," Dimentio said. "Well, you heard the hand. We better get moving."
Smash Run's lobby was inside a building with a thatched roof and bamboo sticks hanging from the top of the porch like a wind chime. Dimentio opened the door.
"Hello? Is anybody in here?"
There was another Mii, wearing a samurai garb and ninja headband. "Ah, young adventurers. Welcome to my dojo-"
"Cut to the point," Kazoie said, receiving a smile from Dimentio.
"I am starting to like this bird. But she does make a point. We do not have all day. We want to participate in Smash Run." Dimentio snapped. "So make it quick."
"Sorry, only four people can enter at a time, and it looks like you've got eight people." The Mii sadly shook his head. "You can, however can go into a free-for-all at the original lobby. Have fun, great adventurers."
The eight person was filled by random from Master Hand, and they were put into two different battles. Banjo and Kazoie were paired with Ash, Steve, and Sora. Dimentio had Joker, Duck Hunt, Junior, and the new eight fighter. The new fighter turned out to be none other than Sephiroth.
"Oh...We're gonna lose," Junior sighed sadly.
Duck Hunt barked again.
Duck Hunt appeared on the stage in a bush, mimicking laugher despite not making a sound. Junior hopped onto the stage, making a mocking face. Sephiroth flicked his cloak to the side. Dimentio felt left out, and confused.
"Welcome to Wario Ware! This battle arena came with Wario when he joined the fight!" The announcer explained. He sounded like Master Hand, almost, a slightly higher pitch. "This is a free-for-all, so attack whomever your hearts desire! The deal with this course is, if you follow the prompts that appear, something good will happen! If not, then you get nothing, how sad! 3, 2, 1, GO!"
