When Oliver awoke in the morning, he was unsurprised but disappointed to find Grace gone.
He washed and shaved his face, plastering on the aftershave that Grace had seemed to be quite attracted to the previous night.
Making his way out into the dining cart, he nodded his head politely at the other passengers and attendants until his eyes locked on Grace who was sipping a cup of coffee and staring out the window of the train at the glorious scenery.
The morning sun was shining in through the window, casting an ethereal glow over her face, making her look as angelic as Oliver already knew she was.
He approached the table and waited until she noticed his presence before he took his seat across from her. "Good morning, Grace", he greeted her softly.
She blinked shyly back at him. "Good morning."
"You were up early. You didn't fall out of bed did you?" He asked half jokingly to which Grace responded with a breathless chuckle. "Oh no, I was quite well secured."
"Good", he smiled back at her, his eyes alight with playfulness and affection. "How's the coffee?" He asked her, reaching for the pot between them.
"Mm, not as good as Mrs. Pugh's", she said with a fondness in her voice.
"Well, there's nothing quite like the comforts of home is there?"
Grace smiled warmly. It had always been clear that Mr. Warbucks wished for his staff to consider the Warbucks estate just as much their home as his. And she did. It was a place where she felt so safe, so content and comfortable.
"Indeed not", she agreed with him.
They sat in tense silence while they both sipped their coffee. Neither one of them knew quite what to say to the other.
It was Oliver who eventually spoke first. "Ah, about last night. I feel I should apologize for my inability to control my actions. I promised you a safe place to lay your head and instead I took advantage of you, and I'm truly very sorry for that."
He watched as Grace's face fell at his words. Her throat sounded clogged when she replied to him. "There's no need to apologize, Sir. I very much played my part too. I…responded to your actions if you recall."
Their eyes locked. Grace was trying to convey to him that she had no regrets about what had happened between them, in fact, she was completely enthralled by it.
Oliver was somehow trying to express to her that he felt terrible for betraying her trust and ashamed for not being able to keep himself in line, but that at the same time, he had been in absolute bliss to be held and kissed by her.
Both were conflicted in their thoughts and in what they felt they should portray to one another.
"Well uh, I suggest we just consider it a lapse in judgment and move on", Oliver suggested, trying to be honorable, yet feeling cowardly at the same time.
He didn't think his suggestion had done much to appease Grace however as she frowned at him. "Yes, Sir", she reluctantly agreed.
She was left to deduce that he must have considered it all a terrible mistake and was clearly not interested in pursuing it any further.
Why would he be? Grace thought to herself. She was just his secretary after all.
They ate their breakfast in silence and both put on a professional front to get through their work. The train pulled into Grand Central at two pm and they each sighed in relief. The air between them in the confined little compartment had been stifling.
Grace stood up quickly and was one of the first off the train. Oliver looked after her wide eyed, stunned that she wouldn't even speak to him before disembarking.
He jumped off the train and chased her down the platform. "Grace! Grace, please talk to me, don't just run off like this."
He managed to catch up with her only when she had reached the entrance to the terminal. She turned to face him with her back to the stone archway of the massive building. Her eyes held so much despair and disappointment. Oliver was so angry at himself for making her feel that way.
"I'm sorry Grace, I'm sorry", he apologized emphatically.
She grabbed his arm and looked at him with desperation in her eyes. "I don't want you to say you're sorry. I want you to say you were as thrilled by it as I was."
Oliver's face registered shock. "Y-you were?"
She dropped her voice to an intimate whisper. "I loved every second of it. Each kiss felt like heaven. Please don't tell me you won't ever make me feel that way again." She almost thought she ought to feel ashamed of herself. She was pleading with him, begging, but she just couldn't stop herself. She had tasted the sweet nectar of his lips and she knew she would never go another day in her life working for him without craving the taste of them yet again.
As if he had the ability to peer into her innermost thoughts and examine the deepest secrets of her mind, Oliver launched himself on her with a vigor Grace had never seen him display before. He attacked her mouth with his, kissing her with a ferocity which made her entire body weak. Where last night's kisses had been tentative and delicate, the way he was kissing her now was completely the opposite, now he was passionate and hungry for her.
Her words, her request, had done something immense to him. They'd transformed his professional and courteous manner into deviance and darkest desire.
He wanted her in a way he'd never even known before. He'd wanted her this way for some time now if he was honest with himself, but he'd never dared cross the line he'd always thought was there. If there ever was one, she'd now turned that line to dust, and from her eager response to him, she welcomed the destruction.
He crushed her petite body against the stone pillar as he absolutely devoured her, his mouth hot and heavy on hers, his hands wandering.
"Mr. Warbucks, Sir…", Grace whimpered, reluctantly pulling away from him, but feeling the need to remind him, "We're in a public place. Don't you think we ought to…continue this at home?" She swallowed, feeling shy all of a sudden.
"But everybody knows us there", he argued and Grace let out a laugh at the true enough, yet funny statement. "At least here we have a little anonymity."
She gave him a look of warning. "You're quite a recognizable man, you know, and people are beginning to stare at us."
"Let them stare", Oliver growled lowly, pressing his lips firmly to hers once again. He picked her up in his arms, making her squeal in surprise.
"Let them grow green with envy that I should be kissing the most beautiful woman in the world", he declared with a grin and her expression turned watery at his earnest.
"That's a very lovely thing for you to say, Sir, but even so, do you think we might go someplace a little warmer? It's rather chilly out here."
Oliver thought for a moment, then snapped his fingers. He took her hand in his and dragged her back through the building and out to the platforms where he walked straight on up to a guard. "Excuse me my good man, will you tell me, which of your locomotives will be remaining here in the yard for the longest period of time?"
The guard gave Oliver a bemused look and pointed to a train a few platforms down. "K5 4205 on platform four won't be departing for Pennsylvania until tomorrow afternoon."
"And has she been serviced already?"
"Yes Sir."
"Great. I would like to commandeer her for the rest of the day." He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out his checkbook, scribbling on it rapidly before showing it to the guard. "I trust this figure will be enough to secure the booking."
The guard's eyes lit up like a Christmas tree as he slowly took the check from Mr. Warbucks. "Yes, Sir, Mr. Warbucks. I'll arrange it with the station master."
As the guard walked off quickly, Grace looked at Oliver in astonishment. "You could have bought the train with that amount of money!"
"I didn't want to give them any reason to say no."
She laughed, then murmured discreetly, "We could have gone to a hotel."
"Oh but this'll be much more fun", he said playfully and took her hand in his again, dragging her to platform 4 and pulling her up onto K5 4205.
They ran through the forward lounge and the dining cart and peered quickly into each of the cabins.
"Hmm, I'm afraid there are only single rooms onboard", he told her, feeling frustrated and embarrassed.
But Grace smiled at him reassuringly with a saucy gleam in her eye. "Oh, I don't think that will be a problem." She grinned as she pushed him back into the cabin nearest to them.
…
A/N: This ended up being so out of character and utterly ridiculous, but I did want to write something with a bit of a different setting for them and I guess I achieved that!
I thought about having them go home and getting into things there but then I decided this idea would be a lot more fun! 😉 What do y'all think?
