Chapter 3: Allies and Enemies
The morning sun cast a golden hue over the Hogwarts grounds as Harry walked through the familiar corridors, his thoughts focused on the complex task ahead. He knew he needed to form alliances with key figures of the era to have any hope of altering the future. Today, he planned to start with the two most critical: Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape.
Harry made his way to Dumbledore's office, the gargoyle guarding the entrance stepping aside at the mention of "Lemon Drop." As he ascended the spiral staircase, Harry felt a mix of nostalgia and determination. Dumbledore had always been a beacon of wisdom and guidance in his life, and now, Harry hoped to earn his trust once again.
"Enter," came Dumbledore's voice as Harry reached the top. He pushed the door open and stepped into the office, greeted by the sight of the headmaster seated behind his desk, a gentle smile on his face.
"Ah, Mr. Evans," Dumbledore said, his eyes twinkling with curiosity. "To what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?"
Harry took a deep breath. "Professor Dumbledore, I wanted to speak with you about some concerns I have regarding recent events and the rising threat of Voldemort."
Dumbledore's expression grew serious. "A grave topic indeed. Please, have a seat and share your thoughts."
As Harry sat down, he carefully chose his words. "I believe that Voldemort's influence is growing, even within the walls of Hogwarts. There are students who are already being swayed by his ideology. I think it's crucial that we begin to take steps to counteract this."
Dumbledore nodded thoughtfully. "You have a keen sense of observation, Mr. Evans. What do you propose we do?"
Harry hesitated, then decided to take a risk. "I think we need to strengthen our defenses and form alliances with students who show potential for leadership and resistance against dark influences. I'd also like to suggest additional training for those willing to fight against Voldemort."
Dumbledore studied Harry for a moment before speaking. "Your insight is impressive for someone so new to our school, Mr. Evans. I will consider your suggestions. In the meantime, I encourage you to continue your efforts and keep me informed of any developments."
Feeling a sense of accomplishment, Harry left Dumbledore's office and made his way to the dungeons, where he hoped to find Severus Snape. Despite their complicated history, Harry knew that Snape's eventual defection from Voldemort's ranks was pivotal. If he could gain Snape's trust earlier, it might change everything.
He found Snape alone in a dimly lit corridor, engrossed in a potion's textbook. "Severus," Harry called, approaching cautiously.
Snape looked up, his expression wary. "What do you want, Evans?"
"I'd like to talk," Harry said, trying to keep his tone neutral. "I've noticed your talent in Potions and thought we might be able to help each other. You're incredibly skilled, and I believe we share some common interests."
Snape raised an eyebrow. "And what interests would those be?"
"Preventing Voldemort's rise to power, for one," Harry said bluntly. "I know you've been approached by some of his followers. I'm here to offer you a different path."
Snape's eyes narrowed. "Why should I trust you?"
"Because I know what's at stake," Harry replied. "And because I believe that you, more than anyone, understand the importance of making the right choices."
There was a tense silence before Snape finally spoke. "I'll consider your words, Evans. But don't expect me to trust you easily."
"That's all I ask," Harry said, feeling a glimmer of hope. "Thank you, Severus."
As the weeks passed, Harry continued to build on these initial contacts. He subtly influenced Bellatrix during their frequent encounters, planting seeds of doubt about her allegiance to Voldemort. He spoke of the value of free will, the power of making one's own choices, and the consequences of following a path dictated by fear and hatred.
One evening, as they walked by the Black Lake, Bellatrix turned to him, her eyes searching. "Henry, why do you care so much about what I believe?"
"Because I've seen what happens when good people are led astray," Harry replied earnestly. "You have the power to make a difference, Bellatrix. To choose your own destiny rather than one that's been forced upon you."
She was silent for a long time, staring out over the water. "It's not as simple as you make it sound."
"I know it's not," Harry said gently. "But every change starts with a single decision."
Their conversations grew deeper, more personal, and Harry saw the walls she had built around herself begin to crumble. Bellatrix was still conflicted, but the doubt was there, a small crack in the armor of her loyalty to Voldemort.
Meanwhile, Harry's efforts to build alliances within Hogwarts started to pay off. He gained the trust of Remus, Sirius, and James, who continued their secret training sessions. He also began to earn the respect of other students, who saw him as a leader willing to stand up against the rising darkness.
The time was approaching for Harry to take more decisive actions. He knew the road ahead would be fraught with danger and uncertainty, but with each ally gained and each seed of doubt sown, he felt more confident in his mission to rewrite the future.
