Chapter 3: One Final Test

Harry didn't run through the woods, he knew that was a stupid idea, it would tire him out and it would also make a lot of noise. He jogged, glad that he had spent so long training both back when doing Quidditch and when preparing for the final conflict with Voldemort he had let himself go a bit but he still had kept his edge, but even jogging, the travel was slow with how overgrown the forest was. 'No doubt to keep up the appearance that there isn't a black ops Headquarters at the other end.' He shook his head in amusement. 'That's over analysing the situation a bit much isn't it?' Harry mused quietly as he pressed up against a tree 'The people near by probably know about the base, perhaps not what it's for, I don't know how well FOXHOUND is known, either way, having the forest surrounding the area this overgrown is good for these exact sort of excercises.' Harry concluded as he glanced round the tree further into the woods.

'I can't see anyone… doesn't mean they aren't there though, I'm not in camouflage gear they probably are.' He summarised stepping out glancing down at the ground to keep an eye on his footing, with the vines and overgrowth it would be easy for him to trip. Harry stopped at the next tree glancing around it further into the woods. "Still nothing." He muttered continuing up.

Harry continued further along, glancing to the sides and using the trees as cover as he made his way, surprised at the lack of soldiers that there had been.

Crack

A sound of a twig breaking carried through the otherwise silent forest, Harry froze as he listened, it came from the left, that much he could tell but couldn't tell how close it was. He froze, pressed into a natural groove of the tree he was in, shielding himself from view as he waited, he worked on keeping his breathing level and quiet as he listened. Now he could hear them, the dull thud, thud, thud of boots on the ground, the rustling of the debris on the floor being shifted about. Three of them if he was correct.

"So why have they got us patrolling through here again?" One of them spoke up, his voice clearly showing their confusion.

"Some test for the FOXHOUND troop, they recruited someone while they were out, now they're getting them to run the woods and get past us all." Another, a rougher voice responded calmly. "He has no gear, purely a stealth and evasion test." The man explained and Harry smiled as they walked past the tree that he was against. "We're the gauntlet he has to get through, three squads all spread out through the woods. The Boss told us where he was going to drop him off so we have a rough area to work from." The man continued to explain. "Anyway spread out, you head that direction, you over there, keep in radio contact, regular check ins," the man, obviously the commander ordered and after two affirmatives he heard the two pairs of footsteps head in different directions, one cut inbetween the tree that he was pressed against and the one next to him and Harry held his breath waiting for the man to pass out of sight. the man continued without pause and Harry let out a breath, a sigh of relief escaping as he did so.

'it's going to be extremely difficult to get through them, how many are in a squad? Could be any size.' Harry thought as he waited for the last set of footprints to move away but he didn't seem to be going anywhere. 'Is he waiting here on purpose?' Harry questioned before chancing a glance round. The man had his back to Harry, looking at something. Harry glanced around thinking of a way to distract him, glancing down for a stone or something that he could throw to cause some noise. Not seeing anything sizeable near him he looked up, the tree had a low hanging branch that he could possibly grab hold of if he jumped, the sound would probably attract his attention though.

The guys radio crackled to life. Harry froze looking around to see if the people were on their way back

"I've reached the road, no cars here, we definitely sure he's here?" The first voice spoke up again and Harry jumped while he was talking using the sound to cover up the rustling of the foliage.

"I'm certain, the Boss contacted me the moment he entered." The man replied as Harry lifted his legs up wrapping them around the branch working to twist himself round so he could sit on it.

"Ok I'm heading back and keeping an eye out." The person said as Harry stood up on the branch using the trunk of the tree to support him stepping round to the other side onto another suitably thick branch.

'Right, I'm up here, what am I going to do now? There's another tree nearby but I don't think I'll be able to get… wait, what's that cracking noise?' Harry panicked and jumped as the surface beneath him gave way, reaching and gripping onto the branch ahead and barely holding on as the one he had been standing on fell.

The man below had unfortunately been standing right in the path, hearing the cracking noise he had looked up. "He's here!" He managed to shout into the radio before the branch cracked him across the face.

"Whats going on?" A new voice crackled over the radio as Harry dropped down, "Respond!" The voice ordered again and Harry took off running. "We've lost contact with the Squad Leader of team 1, sending additional troops." The voice informed and Harry winced.

"Great just what I needed, to get more of them out here." Harry muttered stumbling, his foot caught in a vine. He lost his footing dropping he hit the ground rolling into a dense bit of ground grimacing as the rough ground cut into his hands. He rolled onto his back the vines and long grass covering him as he looked up into the tree line. 'That was unintended, but one person down and I'm a bit further through, still no idea how I'm going to get through without magic'. More footsteps, a lot more, Harry froze as they ran near him, they seemed to be less focused on the area around them and just travelling. He held his breath again as the first few sets of feet ran by. They slowed down near him and he cursed his luck, they seemed to know where he was each time they stopped but they didn't do anything to stop him. 'Are they testing me further? Letting me show some of my moves before they rope me in.' Harry mused as the footsteps got further away, they were faint now and he took the risk to look up glancing around seeing one of the soldiers still there.

Looking straight in his direction.

Harry lowered his head slowly trying to be as quiet as possible. There was still rustling but it was quiet, he hoped that whoever the guy was didn't hear it.

"Huh, what was that noise?" The man said suddenly and Harry cursed. Lady luck really, really hated him sometimes. He lay there, the person was getting closer, glancing to the side he saw the glint off of the weapon from the small rays of sun that managed to penetrate the treetops. 'I've got one shot, if this doesn't work then I'm probably going to get shot.' Harry mused as the man got closer.

"You there, stand up slowly, hands where I can see them." He ordered and Harry stood slowly his hands clearly visible at all times.

"Hi there, I was on a walk and I got a little lost, you think you can direct me out of here?" Harry spoke casually as the man reached for his radio, the other still aiming the gun at Harry.

"HQ I have the…" He was tackled by Harry, the soldier surprised at just how quick the raven-haired wizard was. The two fell into the overgrowth and Harry shoved the arm holding the gun to the side as the man fired, the bullets tearing into the nearby tree. He could barely hear the shouts from the other soldiers over the sounds of his own heart pounding and his pulse racing as he fought with the man. Harry knocked the gun away and punched the man in the jaw wincing slightly afterwards and flexing his hands the man groaned in pain clutching his jaw and Harry stood up already hearing all the others running towards him, This wasn't going how he anticipated. Looking down at the soldier Harry sighed.

"Sorry about this but I've got to prove him wrong." Harry said and stomped down on the mans face knocking him out and probably knocking a few teeth out. Breaking out into a run Harry continued in the direction that he had originally been pointed at hearing the soldiers rapidly gaining on him, there were a few less footsteps and Harry assumed that a few had broken off to check on the downed soldier. Ahead of him he could hear more footsteps and knew that Liquid had set him up as he saw more troops appearing. "Huh… the son of a bitch, there was no way for me to get through was there." Harry said as he slowed down to a walk before stopping looking at the small force of soldiers that were watching him, weapons aimed, meekly, he held his hands up. "Take me to your leader?" Harry asked as one of them walked over and restrained his hands, a slight clicking of the joints and a minor hiss in pain from Harry and they were on their way to FOXHOUND HQ. As Harry was frogmarched towards the HQ, he couldn't help but smile idly a tune started playing in the back of his mind.

'We're off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz.' It sang to him and he found himself chuckling quietly. The soldiers on either side of him gave him looks that clearly showed that they were questioning his sanity but Harry didn't care. "Out of curiosity, how far did I get?" Harry questioned looking at one of the Soldiers.

"Just shy of quarter of the way." The Soldier to his left said and Harry cursed.

"Damn it, he was right," He muttered and Harry smirked. "Though I think he had every intention of me not getting that far didn't he. Live ammo, more soldiers than trees… all in all, I don't think I was meant to get through was I?" He questioned but the Soldier didn't say anything. "Yep thought so," Harry said in amusement as they continued moving. They continued at a relatively quick pace, Harry being forcefully made to keep up, he was having a little trouble keeping up but that may have something to do with being unable to keep full focus on his footing as he was marched through the heavily overgrown forest. "So… anyone know any good knock, knock jokes?" He questioned half seriously, the silent treatment that he was getting was beginning to annoy him and he felt the overwhelming urge to fill in the quiet with noise. "Or how about those local sports teams?" He continued jokingly and the soldier to his right gave him something that probably would have been an intimidating glare if Harry hadn't been on the receiving end of so many of Snape's "you so much as breath incorrectly and I will make sure you suffer a slow and agonising death" glare, Now that was intimidating, just thinking about it made Harry want to shudder in fear. The man was long dead and he was still having this effect on Harry.

That just wasn't natural.

Soon they were nearing the edge of the woods, Harry could see the outline for a large building up ahead as well as what looked to be a perimeter fence before it. He could see other soldiers patrolling the fence and in the back of his mind Harry fully accepted that this was going to be somewhere that he could possibly relax without having to watch over his shoulder all the time.

They reached the gate, one of the Soldiers moving forwards, swiping the ID through the machine and a loud heavy thud of a lock unlocking was heard, the group were lead through and Harry saw the main group of FOXHOUND all standing there as he was led into the main Courtyard at the front of the building. "Hi honey, I'm home." He called jokingly and saw a few smirks at his apparent lack of concern about being caught. "Liquid, you were right, I didn't make it a quarter of the way." Harry continued and his eyes flashed with annoyance. "Why do I get the feeling you intentionally planned that?" Harry said and Liquid smirked.

"It is possible, I sent you in at the extreme to see how you would do, you did better than I anticipated but there is room for improvement… a lot of room." Liquid spoke and Harry tilted his head a look of surprise on his face.

"So how many squads were out there?" Harry asked and Liquid smiled.

"Enough," He continued and gestured for the Soldiers to release him. One of them undid the cuffs and Harry quickly brought his hands forwards, rubbing his wrists to get the flow back to normal.

"ugh, hate those things, who knew that the plasticuffs would be so damn awkward." Harry muttered as he looked at the soldiers, "I can make something that'll heal those two I kinda injured back to one hundred percent, good as new, just send someone to get the thing in a couple of hours or so that it'll take to make it, Can't garauntee they'll like the taste, but it'll work." He said before turning back to Liquid and co. "So…" He started unsure of how to begin as he looked up at the building. "Nice place you have here." He said as Mantis and Wolf walked off in separate directions. Harry frowned for a moment. "Was it something I said?" He asked and Liquid shook his head.

"Enough, Ocelot take him to his quarters, we'll start his training tomorrow."

"When did I become a tour guide Boss?" Ocelot asked sharply and Liquid just ignored him walking off towards the main building, with a sigh Ocelot turned away from Harry walking along the side of the building making a sharp gesture for Harry to follow after him as they entered through one of the smaller side doors. "The layout is simple, ground floor has the Gym, several smaller workout rooms and a pool for training purposes as well as other rooms just designed for the people here to unwind." Ocelot said and Harry nodded his head. "First floor is the briefing rooms and medical bay, Dr Clark will need to examine you after I show you your quarters," he saw Harry turn slightly pale and smirked. "Afraid of needles huh?" He taunted and Harry glared. "The next several floors are mainly living Quarters, the further up you get the higher the rank of troop, there isn't much difference but it's just been like that for a while now." Ocelot explained and Harry nodded idly wondering how high on the pecking order he would be. "Your quarters are up with the rest of the team, don't think it's going to go over well with some of the lower ranked ones, they know to deal with situations like this but they don't take kindly to people jumping in over their head, especially joining the top force in FOXHOUND." Ocelot said and Harry now knew just why he had been getting the cold shoulder from the soliders that had caught him. Even if they hadn't all been in FOXHOUND and were just other guards stationed here, he was an outsider that was brought in and now working with the main group.

The two stepped into the lift and Ocelot pushed the button to take them up. "You didn't take offence at the little cow transformation when you guys attacked me did you?" Harry questioned and Ocelot shook his head.

"I've read the report on your activities, I know you don't kill unless necessary and I know that you could have easily set something off more dangerous." Ocelot responded calmly and Harry let out a sigh of relief. "However," Ocelot started again and Harry froze. "You pull another prank like that on me and I'll be using you for target practice." Ocelot finished

Ding

The Elevator door opened and Ocelot walked out calmly. Harry stood there for a moment, mental images of him being used for target practice by Ocelot. He had seen just how good he could be and he knew that Ocelot could have done better but was caught off guard by the spell that Harry had used.

To put it bluntly being used as target practice by Ocelot scared the hell out of Harry.

Walking down the corridor he could see doors on both sides of the hallway, each were simple white doors with just a nameplate in the upper centre with the name of the person who resided there, he recognised some of the names, Sniper Wolf, Vulcan Raven and Revolver Ocelot, all part of the team which he was apparently joining, he didn't see the others so whether or not they were further down the corridor or perhaps on the other side, or perhaps on a different floor altogether. After a minute, they stopped at a door that had no name plate on and Ocelot opened the door throwing a key up in the air to Harry caught it and walked in after to see a plain room with a wardrobe, bed, desk and a door that most likely led to an en suite. "You can arrange the room however you want, but you have to keep it organised, no maid service here." Ocelot commented and Harry nodded his head already expecting as much. "Well, enjoy." Ocelot said turning around and walking out, "Your next stop is the Med lab, standard checks, try not to keep Dr Clark waiting." Ocelot joked as he closed the door and Harry saw that his chest had already been brought up.

"I've had enough of doctors to last a lifetime." Harry muttered under his breath as he walked to the window and looked out over the training area out back, a large running track and shooting range were the dominant attractions for the area along with a large open field, what they did there Harry couldn't hazard a guess but it was a relatively calm and easy view. Looking up at the ceiling he saw the smoke detector and pulled it loose, removing the battery and reattaching it. "Don't need to unnecessarily set this off now." Harry muttered as he walked over to his chest placing his hand on the container and channeling a bit of magic into it the lock clicked open. Harry opened it up pulling out several items and placing them on the desk, he drew his wand and tapped each of them in turn, the items starting to rattle and shake as they slowly increased in size until a cauldron and a black box sat on the desk. "Focus on those later." Harry said as he turned back to the chest.

"I'm going to have to keep a load of these books hidden, even if there are no more magic users in the world, they could still potentially cause a problem." Harry muttered as he pulled several books out, mainly non magical in nature and placed them on the a shelf that was fastened to the wall near his bed. He continued this process for a little bit, unpacking bits and pieces from the chest, books, clothes, magical trinkets and doodads setting them up around the room, he smiled in amusement as he heard a slight fizz from one of the walls as he placed the last of the items onto the bedside table. "Magic and small electronics, they never mix." Harry muttered knowing it was most probably a listening device of some description. Either way, it was gone now. Turning around he walked back to his door, opening it and looking at the plain white door and frowning, going through tried and tested motions Harry conjured a name plate and stuck it to the door with a sticking spell, smiling as he looked at his name on the door he closed it, letting it seal with a slight click and turned walking back to the elevator.

"Now… which floor did he say the Med lab was on?" Harry muttered as he waited. "First floor that's right!" Harry said with certainty as he hummed waiting for the lift to arrive, "Mandatory check ups." He muttered, shuddering slightly. "So glad Madam Pomfrey never got that idea in her head." He added wincing slightly as he thought about the old School Mediwitch, Sure she may have been forceful and stupendously strict with her care of her patients, but he knew that was only because she cared so much for them. But how would this Doctor react to him or treat him. Ignoring Ocelot being an arse, he still had a valid point.

Harry hated needles!

Stepping into the lift Harry let out another sigh of resignation before pressing the button for the first floor.

As the door was closing Harry glared, he could hear Ocelot walking, the chink of metal spurs on the ground and a familiar gravely voice humming a funeral dirge sound.

Harry stepped forwards to make a comment but the door shut in his face, he could hear the faint sound of Ocelots laughter and glared. "Next time I'll make sure the change is permanent!" Harry shouted as the lift started whirring into action and sending him down to his fate as Harry stood there muttering about ageing cowboys who seemed to delight in tormenting him. Next time he'd make the transformation last longer. "Now to see this Dr Clark." Harry muttered aloud as the lift stopped.

It wasn't that he hated doctors and hospitals.

It was just that he REALLY hated doctors and hospitals.

The door opened and Harry was surprised to see a sign on the wall, several of them pointing to different things, though the one that caught his eyes was the one at the top.

Med lab, with an arrow pointing to the right. Resigned to his fate Harry stepped out of the lift turning and walking along the corridor following the little signs that were on the wall.

Eventually he came up to a closed door that just had the name of the doctor printed on it and knocked on it.

"Enter."

the last part that i managed to write for this story idea before all inspiration dried up. I did enjoy writing it and there were several inspirations into characters that came from the webcomic last days of foxhound. Which anyone who has read it can probably tell.
