Broken hearts

In the Jedi Council Chambers, the council members had gathered to see if Ky Narecc's Padawan Asajj Ventress was ready for the Trials.

When Asajj and her master entered the elevator that would bring them to the top of the tower of the Jedi High Council Chamber, the 20-year old Dathomirian woman felt nervous.

As the doors closed and the elevator moved upwards, Ky ensured his apprentice "It'll be alright, Asajj,"

Asajj sighed "I know, master. It's just… I've worked so hard these past few weeks at the Temple and learned as much as I could. I'm just nervous to finally get the chance to go through the Trials, to be finally become a Jedi Knight." She finished with some confidence, feeling deep down that the Council are sure to give her permission to do the Trials.

Ky Narecc felt the same. However, he hoped that Asajj would also be able to accept the Council's decision if they would decline her the chance to do the Trails.

When the elevator opened, Asajj and Ky saw that all the council members were present, sitting at their designated chairs: Yoda, Mace Windu, Yaddle, Yarael Poof, Even Piell, Adi Gallia, Eeth Koth, Oppo Rancisis, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Plo Koon, Saesee Tinn and Shaak-Ti.

As Asajj and Ky stepped out of the elevator and entered the chamber, both made a bow to the masters.

Oppo Rancisis was the first to tell "Master Narecc. By your request, you wish to have your Padawan, Asajj Ventress to face the Jedi Trails."

Ky nodded "That's right, masters. Though my Padawan is young, she has faced many difficult challenges throughout our stay at Rattaka, when we faced many dangers and fought against pirates, bandits, raiders, anyone who wishes to harm the people on that planet. Asajj's abilities in the Force have been increased during my care and she has used her gifts far greater than I can learn her now. She has proved herself over and over, even during our stay at the Temple, which has been longer than since I began to train her, she too has exceeded my expectations. Her care for others, her will to do what is right has convinced me enough that she's ready for the Jedi Trials. I hope… that you all will see it too, as I am now." Ky Narecc asked humbly.

Asajj smiled to hear her master's kind words.

For a few seconds, the council members were quiet while some exchanged a few glances.

Ki-Adi-Mundi then spoke "Your Padawan has indeed grown in her abilities using the light side, master Karecc,"

Plo Koon then added "Not to mention how quickly she's been able to adept and has shown her skills. Even as she joined with the other Padawans in Skywalker's Jedi-game; Floatball."

Shaak-Ti then said "Her care for others, which is the mandate of our Order, has indeed become her moral code and part of her personality,"

Asajj smiled brighter, feeling that they were going to say that she could do the Trails.

But then Yaddle said "However," hearing that one word, made Asajj's smile slowly fade away "As every Jedi, from the start when they're younglings all the way till they're Padawans, are all supposed to be trained here at the Jedi Temple,"

Eeth Koth then added "Which gives the Council difficulty to monitor all of your Padawan's progress over the years,"

Adi Gallia could sense Asajj feeling troubled by this. So she ensured both Asajj "Though this might not come as you would expect, the Council did took a lot of monitoring during your short time here at the Temple, Padawan Ventress. And you did show us nearly all what is required to be a true Jedi."

Even Piell then said "What we also saw was doubt within your spirit and some fear as well,"

Yarael Poof nodded "Which, if not controlled, will lead to the dark side."

Yoda sighed as he scratched his chin, telling "Considering for you to do the Trials, the council did. Difficult, the decision was. Deep thinking into it, we did."

Asajj gave a small nod "I understand," still she hoped that the council will consider she's ready.

Mace Windu then had the final word, saying "Padawan Asajj Ventress. You have shown us skill, in both the force and saber combat. It was a very difficult decision, as you have been trained mostly on Rattaka and not at the Jedi Temple, which is expected of all the Jedi in the Order. You did show us all you've learned and your willingness to go on and protecting those in need," he glanced at all the masters, "The vote was unanimous, which we took our time and consider the possibility to make an exception for you,"

Asajj felt her heart was pounding in her chest. Though she did not say it mentally, she begged in her spirit that everything would be enough.

Mace Windu then finally said "We're sorry for you, Padawan Ventress. But despite your exceptional skills, the Council does not see it is enough for you to take the Jedi Trails."

Asajj was surprised by this "What?!" she glanced at the other masters, with some anger growing inside her "How can you do this? This is outrageous! This is unfair!"

Ky held his hand on her shoulder "Padawan, that's enough." He apologized to the masters "Forgive my Padwan's outburst, masters. This is… especially for me, not what we had expected."

Oppo Rancisis then stated the reason why the council wouldn't allow Asajj to take the Trails "And what your Padawan has just shown, was one of the main reasons we see she is not ready for the Trails yet. To walk the path of the Jedi, it requires disciple and patience, which however we saw that young Ventress is not fully in control,"

Even Piell nodded as he added "As the Trails too would have a test of the spirit; facing the mirror and looking into your other self."

Shaak-Ti then said, trying to ease Asajj's disappointment "To make you feel better, many of the Council members did consider the possibility for you to take the Trails. And if you do wish to take on the Trails and become a Knight of the Jedi Order, we all have agreed that in order for you to be ready, we see that you need to be trained more and guided by some of the other masters, which however… would not be to stay at Rattaka, but here at the Temple."

Ky Narecc was a bit surprised to hear this and asked "Excuse me, Master Shaak-Ti, but does that mean my Padawan needs to be staying at the Temple?"

"That is exactly what we believe is best for your Padawan, if she wants to take on the Trails much sooner," Shaak-Ti explained "But alone would not be the best option, as it will also be best for you to stay at the Temple to guide her, master Narecc,"

Asajj was now surprised as well. She tried to control herself and tried to ask humbly "With all due respect, masters. If I need to stay at the Temple together with my master, the people of Rattaka will be defenseless without us."

Mace Windu then told "That will no longer be the case. Chancellor Palpatine has ensured us that all the criminal and pirate activities on Rattaka are from now one under the jurisdiction of the Republic's security forces.

Asajj was now even more surprised by this and expressed with some anger, though she tried to control herself "No! The Security Forces have done nothing for the people of Rattaka over the years or even tried to protect them! Believe me in what I'm saying, if you tell us to stay, Rattaka will be neglected and will be left to defend for itself."

Ky nodded, agreeing with Asajj on this "My Padawan is right, masters. The security forces that are normally responsible for the safety of Rattaka and the nearby systems have been badly organized and are facing wide problems with corruption within its ranks." He sighed, hoping that the council would allow them to go "It is far better that the people of Rattaka are being protected by me and my Padawan."

The council seemed conflicted about this. But Mace Windu stated "The council has already agreed on this matter. Yours and your Padawan's duty to protect the people of Rattaka is over. The security forces are now left in their care,"

Oppo Rancisis nodded in agreement with Mace Windu "The Council does not give you permission to go back to Rattaka, master Narecc," this shocked Asajj "You need to train your Padawan here at the Temple."

Ky gave a small bow "If this is the Council's wish… then we accept."

Though Asajj was shocked and angry that her master wouldn't do anything, she sighed and gave a bow too before both Padawan and master left the council, entering the elevator to go down.

Shaak-Ti then asked the other members "What if master Ky Narecc is right, and the people of Rattaka are being left to defend for themselves?"

Yaddle thought about it and somehow could sense that Narecc's accusation of the leading Republic security forces at the Rattaka system are corrupt "I sense that master Narecc and Padawan Ventress are right, that the leading security forces at that system are indeed corrupt."

Mace Windu however told the others "We have already discussed about this and all unanimously agreed that the Rattaka system are best to be left in the care of the Senate and that Padawan Ventress must be trained further under the guidance of the other masters here at the Temple."

Yoda was a bit conflicted, but agreed with master Windu "I agree. Though a hard decision, this is. Best in the care of the Jedi, Padawan Ventress is." But then said "But, best to investigate, into the security forces, we must."

Most of the council agreed that it would be best to launch an investigation into the possible corrupt activities of the Republic security forces.

"Can you believe this?!" Asajj angrily said as both she and her master walked along the long hallway "First I'm not being allowed to do the Trails and now we're forced to stay here at the Temple?!" she stopped, being on the brink to snap "The people of Rattaka need us!"

Ky placed both his hands on her shoulder, trying to calm her down while looking seriously at her "Asajj, control yourself!"

Seeing her master's serious expression, Asajj nodded "Fo… forgive me, master. I'm just so… so disappointed and frustrated by the Council's decision."

"I know that you're disappointed, Asajj," Ky said as he understood her, but then advised her "But the Council is also right about one thing. If you truly want to have their blessing to show that you're ready for the Trails, you need to learn to control yourself,"

Seeing her master's disappointed look made Asajj look down in shame "I'm sorry, master… I… I never meant to be angry, especially not in front of the council. But… why can't they see that I'm ready?!" she looked at Ky with some tears in her eyes.

Ky sighed as he told her "That is because they haven't yet seen the best of you yet. On Rattaka they might have not seen it," he then smiled at her "But I have, Asajj. To me, you're the best Padawan I have ever trained."

Asajj gave a small sob while she wipe away a tear from her right eye "Really…?"

"Yes. I have trained you since you were a little girl and you have become a greater Jedi than I could have wished for,"

Asajj formed a smile on her face and gave her master a hug, which he returned. To her, Ky Narecc had always been a great father-figure to her when he took her under his wing.

A few hours later

While Asajj was meditating outside on a balcony, she heard someone approaching her. Sensing who it was, Asajj formed a little smile as she opened her eyes and gazed at the person who approached her, which was to her confirmation her little Togurta friend, Ahsoka.

"Hello, Ahsoka," Asajj said.

Ahsoka gave a nod and sat next to her "I heard that you were not allowed to do the Trails. I'm sorry for you, Asajj," Ahsoka placed her hand on her.

Asajj sighed "I know it's sad that the masters don't see that I'm ready yet," but then she smiled at Ahsoka "But they said that I might get to do the Trails sooner, if my master and I stay here at the Temple and give me the right guidance."

Ahsoka's eyes went wide after hearing this, but then she formed a big smile "You mean that… you're staying?!"

Asajj gave a shrug "Yeah, I suppose."

Ahsoka gave her instantly a hug, which surprised her, but then returned.

However, the two friends' moment was interrupted when Asajj heard a beep coming from her holo-communicator. Both broke the hug as Asajj took her communicator out of her pocket, pressing the button, which revealed a small holographic image of a Rattaka citizen, who looked in panic "Padawan Venterss! Padawan Ventress, do you copy?!"

Seeing how serious this was, Asajj stood up and said "I hear you. What's the matter?"

"Please, Asajj Ventress! We need you and master Narecc's help!" the hologram went static before the man said "-ders! Weequay Raiders, all over…! We can't hold them off much lo- (static) They're killing us! Please, help us, we're-" suddenly, the communications was out.

"Citizen? Citizen?!" Asajj asked in panic, while trying to reconnect, but it was to no avail as the line was dead.

Ahsoka was worried "What's wrong, Asajj?"

Asajj looked in shock before turning to Ahsoka "I need to go to my master, now!" she then ran away, back inside the temple, leaving little Ahsoka behind.

Asajj ran into Ky Narecc's quarters, telling in panic "Master! Master, I just got a-"

Ky raised his hand as he tried to establish communications "I know, Padawan. I just got the same message too," as the communications wasn't working, he showed an hologram image of planet Rattaka of where the signals of the citizens that called for help came from "Weequay Raiders are ransacking multiple villages on the planet."

Asajj was both conflicted and frustrated "We… we need to help them, master! But…!" Asajj shook her head as they couldn't leave these people, but also couldn't go against the Council's wishes either.

"I know, Asajj," he turned to his apprentice "That is why I'm going back to Rattaka and help them,"

Asajj was surprised that her master said that "But, master… the council told that you need to stay here to help me complete my training for the Trails."

"And who do you want to give the responsibility to look after them? You know that most of the Republic security forces there are on payroll by those raiders. Our Order might be stationed here on Coruscant, but Rattaka is my home," Ky confidently took his lightsaber and placed it to his belt "And I'm going back there to help those people. So, my Padawan, if you want me to help you to complete your training for the Trails," he then formed a grin to her "I guess you have to come along,"

Asajj smiled and followed her master.

But as they entered the Temple's hangar, Asajj saw Ahsoka running over to her "Asajj? Where are you going?"

Asajj sighed before she glanced to her master "Just give me a minute,"

Ky gave a nod and prepared their ship while his apprentice was going to have a little moment with her friend.

Asajj sat on one knee and told Ahsoka "Listen, Ahsoka. Me and master Ky are going away for a little while,"

This saddened Ahsoka "But… I thought you were-"

"I know I said that, Ahsoka, but…" Asajj tried to find the right words, but couldn't as he also didn't wanted to hurt her friend's feelings. So, against her better judgement, she told a little lie "It's not going to be for long, alright? I will be back,"

"You promise?" Ahsoka sadly asked.

Asajj gave a nod "I promise," but behind her back, she held her fingers crossed, knowing that this was a promise she couldn't keep, much to her own sadness as well.

Both the Dathomirian woman and the Togruta girl shared a hug.

Asajj gave a sadly sigh, saying softly "I'm glad to have you as a friend, Ahsoka. You're… the only friend I ever had."

"Just come back safe, okay?"

Asajj broke the hug and gave a nod before she went to enter her and her master's ship.

Little Ahsoka watched in sadness as her friend flew away in the ship.

The next day, on Rattaka

With many houses burning ablaze by the increasingly attacks from the Weequay raiders, Ky Narecc and Asajj, with their green lightsabers ignited, fought hard to protect the people.

Both master and apprentice slashed through several raiders who attempted to kill them, but the two Jedi were far stronger.

Asajj deflected some blaster fire while saying "There are too many of them!"

"Keep fighting, Asajj!" Ky yelled before he deflected a blast, killing another raider.

In the distance, Asajj saw more mercenary transports arrive with more Weequay raiders. She called to Ky "Master! More raiders are coming."

Ky nodded as he saw how serious this is "We have to get these people out of the village. These raiders are giving anything they have."

Asajj nodded and both ran back to the village, trying to get anyone who was still alive to safety.

Suddenly, both were met with another squad of raiders who fired many blaster shots at them, but Ky and Asajj masterfully deflected them all, killing the raiders.

But unknown to them, a sniper was aiming with his long blaster riffle at the Jedi. He aimed at Asajj's head while the raider formed an evil smirk "I have you now, Jedi."

Ky sensed danger and turned himself, seeing the sniper aiming at Asajj. With little time he'd left, he ran towards his apprentice "Asajj, look out!"

The sniper fired, with Ky protecting Asajj as he took a direct hit to the back!

Asajj gasped in horror as she took him in her arms "No!"

Ky didn't moved. Asajj lay him down on the ground "Master? Master!"

But still, Ky didn't moved. He was dead…

Tears formed in Asajj's eyes "MASTER!"

She glared with anger at the raider sniper who'd killed her master. Feeling nothing but hatred for the one who took her master, her father-figure from her, she took her master's lightsaber and furiously charged at the raider "GGGRAAAAAAAH!"

The raider looked with horror as Asajj slashed both hers and her master lightsaber through him, decapitating him, killing him instantly!

Asajj panted with anger. But then she looked in shock at what she'd done. She'd killed someone in anger, which wasn't the Jedi way.

She looked back at her dead master and ran to him. As she fell on her knees before Ky Narecc's dead body, Asajj began to cry "Master…! Forgive me…!"

As more and more raiders were coming, killing many people and ransacking more houses, Asajj took her holo-communicator, attempting to call for help.

She waited and waited, trying to get a hold one someone.

Finally, a holographic image of Mace Windu appeared "Master Windu! Please, I need help! The Weequay raiders are with too many, and master Ky Narecc is-"

But Mace Windu, looking very disappointed at Asajj, crossed his arms "You and your master have disobeyed the council's orders, Padawan. We told you to stay at the Jedi Temple."

Asajj heavily shook her head while tears fell from her eyes "We couldn't abandon these people! Please master Windu, you have to help me! My master is dead and those raiders are keep coming!"

Windu sighed while he shook his head "A pitiful loss, Asajj. But now you see the consequences of what happens when you defile the council's orders," he then frowned at her "And by seeing you being emotional unstable, perhaps we were wrong about you. We have helped you enough, Asajj Ventress,"

Asajj was shocked that Mace Windu said that "But… master Windu… I-!"

"Farewell, Padawan," Mace Windu coldly said before breaking communications.

"Master Windu?! Master Windu?!" Asajj tried to get back in contact, but Mace Windu had broken alle communications with her.

Asajj was beyond shock. The council had neglected her, for only doing the right thing for the people of Rattaka, and now wouldn't offer her any help.

Asajj began to pant as her anger rose "They… the Jedi… have betrayed me…" she grind her teeth while staring with her eyes at the raiders "The Jedi have betrayed me!" her eyes began to glow yellow. She stood up, ignited both her lightsabers and furiously charged at the raiders "DIIIIIEEEEEEE!"

Blinded by her rage, she kept slicing through every raider that came across, showing no mercy and killed them in the most brutal way thinkable.

Meanwhile, back at the Jedi Temple

Yoda was inside the meditation chamber, meditating. He could feel Asajj's anger and sadness, hearing the Weequay raider's cry for help and mercy, hearing them scream in agonizing pain as they were slaughtered, hearing Asajj's battle roar. He then saw in a vision how Asajj fall on her knees and screamed her lungs out. Yoda sadly could sense there was no more light within Asajj Ventress, feeling that she'd turned to the dark side.

At that moment, Shaak-Ti entered the meditation chamber. As she sat down, Yoda opened his eyes, looking sadly at Shaak-Ti.

Wandering what troubled Yoda, the Togruta Jedi master asked "Master Yoda, what is it?"

Yoda sighed, telling what he'd sensed "Pain… Suffering… Death, I feel."

This didn't sounded good to Shaak-Ti. When using her senses, she could sense it too, coming from Ky Narecc's Padawan, which worried her "Oh no…"

Yoda sadly nodded "Something terrible has happened. Young Venterss is in pain… terrible pain."

At that same moment, at the Floatball-section

Ahsoka was doing some Floatball practice with a few younglings, with the Mirialan Padawan, Zif helping them. Just as Ahsoka raised the ball by using the Force, she suddenly felt a disturbance, causing her to lose focus and dropped the ball on the floor. Little Ahsoka felt some kind of pain in her heart and some headache, causing her to rub her head uncomfortably.

The other younglings and Ziff noticed Ahsoka's discomfort. Zif walked over to her and asked "Ahsoka, what is it?"

When Ahsoka could felt that this disturbance was coming from her Dathomirian friend, she gasped "Asajj…!"

She ran off the Floatball field, trying to find someone who could help her as she knew that Asajj needed help, leaving Ziff and the others confused.

A few younglings went after Ahsoka, while Ziff and a human youngling boy remained behind. The youngling asked Ziff "What's going on?"

Zif shook his head "I'm not sure,"

But just as he was about to check what was causing Ahsoka being so like this, he was approached by a 14-year old Mirialan Padawan girl, wearing training robes "Hi. I heard you were giving practices and I was wandering if you could teach me how to play?"

Zif looked and saw it was someone he recognized; Barriss Offee making him form a smile "Oh, hey Barriss. Finally deciding to try out, huh?"

Barriss nodded "Yes. After watching you guys playing so many times I became inspired to do it too, especially as it helped lots of younglings and Padawans."

Zif could sense that Barriss was eager to learn as well. So, he made a little arrangement with her "Okay, Barriss. I'll teach you, if you'll be able to win a 1-on-1 match against me."

Barriss smiled "Very well, Zif. Let's play."

The youngling left the field, leaving Zif to do his little match with Barriss and watched from the sidelines.

Though Zif was able to score a point fast, Barriss responded quickly and used her acrobatic skills to prevent Zif from scoring more points and she was able to score two herself.

Seeing that Barriss was like a natural, Zif was impressed "Not bad, Barriss. You sure got some skills," he said as he retook the ball by using the Force. Seeing that perhaps Barriss could be a great asset to his team, he asked her "Why don't we make this game a little more interesting?"

Barriss raised an eyebrow at him, but then formed a little grin "I'm all ears."

"If you manage to beat me, I'll not only teach you a bit more, but I'll also let you join The Shockers,"

This interested Barriss, as joining his team could help her skills more and fill her schedule when her master was off world "Alright, Zif. Let's do it,"

Both stood ready and began to play more ferocious, with Barriss being able to win narrowly.

Zif congratulated her and said that she'll make a heck of a Floatball-player.

When Leo Jemilat entered the Floatball-section with the other Shockers, Zif told them "Guys, met our new team player: Barriss Offee."

Barriss gave a small wave "Hello,"

All the others greeted her, with Leo being the last "Hi. I'm Leo Jemilat. Good to mee you, Barriss"

Barriss gave him a friendly nod "You too,"

Then Zif said "Okay, let's do a few practices together and then a small friendly match."

As the others agreed and began to practice, Barriss was teamed up with Zif, along with Leo. While they trained, Barriss asked Leo "So, you're master Kenobi's Padawan, aren't you?"

Leo nodded as he bounced the ball to Zif, who deflected it as he jumped high and used a Force-push to send it over to Barriss, who caught it by using the Force herself.

Leo gave a shrug "He can be a bit stiff sometimes, but he has taught me a lot,"

Both Leo and Barriss exchanged a smile before they continued the training.

A few hours later

Inside the Council Chambers, the Jedi Council was having an emergency session, which was requested by Yaddle, not only because of what happened with Padawan Asajj Ventress and Ky Narecc on Rattaka, but especially after hearing that Mace Windu had declined to send help.

Some of the council members, including Plo Koon, Yaddle, Ki-Adi-Mundi and Shaak-Ti were disgusted by Windu's cold decision.

"Padawan Ventress is a Jedi!" Yaddle called out "When she needed help, you should've send some of our Jedi to provide it!"

Mace Windu stated his decision "Let me remind you, Master Yaddle, she and Master Narecc had disobeyed the Council's orders and went to Rattaka without our approval."

Shaak-Ti then spoke out "Either way, her master was killed while defending innocent lives, making Asajj standing was all alone against those raiders by herself! Yaddle is right. Disobedience or not, Asajj Ventress is still one of us!"

Yoda gave a nod "Agree, I am. Provide safety, the Republic security forces, did not. Only hope for those people, they felt," but then Yoda sighed as he closed his eyes, sensing Asajj's darkness "Stopping those raiders, using her hate and anger, she did. Turned away from the Order, she has." Yoda opened his eyes.

Oppo Rancisis then said, standing with Mace Windu's decision "And this is precisely why we told Master Narecc to stay at the temple with his Padawan. We all sensed Padawan Ventress' unbalanced emotions when we told her she wasn't yet ready for the Trials and Master Narecc's attachments to the people of Rattaka, resulted from being on the planet for far too long then here within the Order. Both of them wouldn't listen to us and have disobeyed the Council's wishes. I say Master Windu, though it wasn't an easy decision, did the right thing by not being dragged into this conflict which was left in the hands of the Senate."

Yaddle narrowed her eyes at Oppo Rancisis and reminded him "Master Rancisis, did you not disobeyed me numerous times when you were still my Padawan student?"

Though the council felt that Yaddle had a point, Saesee Tinn then said, sensing that most of the council was with Mace Windu's decision "Either way, though I agree with what Mace Windu did, it has however shown that the Republic's security forces are indeed corrupted and should've been dealt with sooner."

Ki-Adi-Mundi nodded. He then wandered that perhaps Asajj Ventress could be brought back to the light and asked the other councilmembers "Look, we all can argue among each other if either Master Windu's decision was right or not, we still need to decide about young Ventress. She is right now angry and sad. If we can try and talk some sense into her, she might be brought back to the light under the right care?"

Shaak-Ti and Yoda thought that it was perhaps worth a shot.

"And risk the lives of other Jedi?" Mace Windu asked skeptical "That she used her anger instead of what she'd taught under the Jedi for years was her own decision. She turned to the dark side out of her own choice. I say that Asajj Ventress is no longer considered a Jedi and should be neglected from the Order."

All the council members glanced among each other, all with mixed feelings.

Yoda then told to all the members, sensing that most of them were in favor of neglecting Asajj Ventress and is no longer considered a Jedi "Though sadly, this is. Spoken, the council has. A Jedi, Asajj Ventress, no longer is."

Yoda gave a long sigh, having hoped that there could still be a way for Asajj Ventress to be saved from the darkness.

Later, back on Rattaka

Asajj carried her master's dead body at a remote place, away from the village where she'd slaughtered all the Weequay raiders and destroying all their transport ships along with them.
