Over their careers in the NYPD, Dee and Ryo had encountered a great many desperate criminals. They came in all shapes and sizes, and all had their own reasons for doing what they did. Take the thieves, muggers, burglars, and home invaders, for instance.
Some carried out crimes to feed their addiction, whether that was dugs, alcohol, or gambling related. Others were addicted to the thrill, either shoplifting or stealing cars to go joyriding. Still others were career criminals for whom crime was simply their chosen way of life.
Then there were those who stole out of necessity, to feed themselves or their family. More often than not, they were decent people who'd simply reached the end of their rope; luck had deserted them, and they were reduced to doing whatever they had to just to stay alive.
And then there was this guy. He'd broken into the back of a store after hours, setting the alarms off, but crime had been the last thing on his mind.
"I know I shouldn't have, but I swear I didn't steal anything! I only broke in to use the bathroom!"
Dee shrugged. "Still gotta charge ya with criminal damage."
Desperate criminal indeed!
