A Discussion of Sharks

Leaving the Oceanic Centre with Rikki, Lance looked to the sky for a moment. Was it his imagination or was it looking greyer than before? No, it was certainly not his imagination. It was indeed looking greyer and that typically meant one thing: rain was on the way.

Sighing, Lance muttered "Great" under his breath. And here he was without his umbrella. Well, a little bit of rain never hurt anybody… On the other hand, he really wasn't looking forward into catching a cold. Certainly not. First day in town and he'd be starting school soon, definitely not a time to get sick. Turning to Rikki, he said: "Your friends are nice."

Smiling at him, Rikki replied: "Just wait until you meet Lewis!"

"What's he like?"

"A bit of a mad scientist."

Giving a nervous laugh, Lance commented: "A good one I hope."

Laughing as well, Rikki said: "He hasn't turned into a supervillain or tried making a monster out of dead bodies quite yet." While Lance cracked a smile, Rikki asked: "So why are you so interested in sharks? Why these basking sharks and horn sharks?"

All Lance could do was shrug and answer: "I don't know. Guess when the ones that aren't dangerous to people get all the spotlight, they are just the ones that draw your attention… Especially since you can swim with without being in a cage. My old neighbour Mr. Alana also told me that in Polynesian culture, the shark is the soul's final resting place, the ultimate incarnation. Maybe I just want to get up close to this ultimate incarnation in its natural habitat, something that as I've said I have an affinity for, feeling its allure… Is that correct grammatically? Why do I feel like that is grammatically incorrect?"

"You're doing fine, Lance!" Rikki assured him, giving a smile. "And that bit about the shark being the final resting place for the soul is awfully deep. What else did your old neighbour tell you about sharks?"

"Well…" began Lance, trying to remember what Mr. Alana had told him. "He told me that sharks had magic powers, like charms in their sharps protected nets from damage, it was even deified." Giving a chuckle, he then said: "Guess there are no wobbegongs around here, those runaway rugs only bite when stepped on."

Trying to hold back a laugh, Rikki asked a surprised: "What? Oh, Cleo has been holding out on us…" Turning serious, she then added: "Though, I guess when they don't live in the area, they don't really come up that much in conversation."

About to nod in agreement, Lance felt a raindrop hit his right shoulder. While he sighed in annoyance, he noticed a look of fright appear upon Rikki's face. What was the big deal? It was just a little bit of rain and she was wearing a single tone shirt under that white blouse of hers. What did she have to worry about?
