Chapter 14
Trying To Help
"CLOVER!" I sat straight up. My hand reached the open air. I blinked and looked around. I was in my room. No sign of Clover or…
Who WAS that guy?
"Sal-U-Tations!" Penny popped up out of nowhere and startled me out of my bed.
"Penny what the hell?" I shouted, throwing a pillow at the thing's face. It gave a small 'oomph' as the pillow hit its target before falling to the floor.
Ignoring the fact I threw a pillow at its face, the android responded "It is almost 6:30 AM. Your presence will be required in an hour's time at the meeting room to learn of your next mission. I was sent to inform you of this."
I gave a yawn and got up to retrieve my pillow. "Penny, I already know. That's what I have an alarm clock for," I groaned. I gave another startled jump as said alarm clock went off. I threw my pillow at that too. It kept buzzing.
I walked around my bed to turn it off while Penny continued speaking. "Oh, um. I will proceed to Team RWBY's room then." I gave the thing a wave and it walked off. I went to the shower, shaking off the dream. Since I didn't know who that other guy was, it was most likely a vision. Although he does have a-. No I can't jump to conclusions yet. It might not be him. Anyway, my future dreams usually come to me every day for about two months before they become reality, give or take a few days. I had time to figure it out.
I was paired up with Qrow and Clover again to head on over to the Mines and clear it from the Centinall nest that was still there. We may have taken down a few while looking for the Geist, but now that that was out of the way it was time to whittle down the small fry.
Clover was a bit further ahead of us dragging the line of Kingfisher down so its hook sliced down the underbelly of a Centinall. Qrow was right behind me, Harbinger in its shotgun mode, shooting at the Grimm with precise accuracy.
Soon the area was cleared out and Clover joined back up with us. "Great work you guys. Especially you, Qrow. It's just amazing how you wield your weapon."
Qrow sheathed Harbinger and looked away from us in embarrassment. "It's no big deal really," he said.
"Nonsense. I've never seen a huntsman move so gracefully before," Clover praised. Qrow's face flushed even deeper.
As much as I didn't want to, I interrupted the moment. "If you're done flirting Hotshot we need to get moving."
Now it was Clover's turn to get embarrassed. "I-I wasn't flirting."
I busted out laughing. "Oh please! You're practically batting your eyes at Strawhead over here." By now both huntsmen were a deep red and I laughed even louder as I walked on ahead. "If it makes you feel any better it looks like Qrow really appreciates it."
Qrow quickly caught up to me. "Seriously Agatha, what are you doing?" he asked through clenched teeth.
I gave Qrow a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "You'll thank me later. Trust me Qrow, I got a knack for spotting true love and you and Clover were hitting it off yesterday."
"What makes you even think he's into me?" Qrow asked.
"Why else would he compliment you so much," I told him.
"Yeah, he probably does that to everyone. Especially the women."
"Okay one: He's not said a thing to me yet. Two: I asked Marrow and he confirmed that Clover is Bisexual. Yang said the same thing about you." What little of Qrow's blush that had started to leave returned with a vengeance. "Mind your own business," he grumbled and started walking away.
Clover joined me by that point and started interrogating me too. "Okay Agatha, what game are you trying to play here?"
"No games," I answered. "I'm just trying to help you. Qrow's rather reclusive. I don't think he'll take your subtle hints that easily."
"Hints at what? I was just complimenting him," Clover said.
"Uh-huh. And checking him out every five seconds," I added.
Clover quickly went on the defensive. "What? I'm not- That isn't- I'm just," he cleared his throat. "We need to focus on the mission." He also went on ahead but made sure to keep a respectable distance away from Qrow.
I gave a sigh. I honestly thought those two were starting to see what was going on here. Or at least Clover was. But his military training seems to be holding him back and Qrow is just one big ball of depression so he's going to deny this to the bitter end. Looks like I got my work cut out for me.
Hearing a commotion further down the tunnels, we raced off to see the rest of the Ace Ops in the thick of the nest. Clover went straight into command mode, directing his team on where to go and what to do. Qrow and I stuck to the side lines making sure the Grimm didn't venture off too far. After finishing up the last of my section, I turned around to check on the others.
Qrow had just finished up as well and it looked like the Ace Ops were just about done. Until another Centinal popped up out of the ground and spat goop at the ceiling. Qrow and I quickly shot it to death with our weapons but the acid landed on an ice stalactite which dissolves the base and the ice sickle plumbed straight towards Clover. Thankfully he was able to dodge in time and safely rolled in front of me. I let out a sigh of relief. "Nice reflexes," I complimented.
"Not that he needs it with his luck," Marrow said, clasping Clover on the shoulder.
I tilted my head in confusion. "What are you talking about?"
Elm joined in and elbowed Clover in the ribs. "With his semblance Clover's practically invincible."
I was still confused. "I thought Clover's semblance was Good Fortune not Invincibility. Besides I didn't see his pin glint."
Now Marrow and Elm were confused by my statement but I didn't miss the way Clover's eyes went soft with relief at what I said. "What do you mean Agatha?" Marrow asked.
I gave a sigh and walked away. "Forget it. Let's just head back. I'm freezing here."
Clover gave a small laugh. "If you hate the cold so much you shouldn't have come up here."
"What and miss out on all the fun? I don't think so," I countered.
Qrow quickly joined in with us and in no time at all we were out of the mines and boarded an airship to head back to Atlas. "So what do you guys want to do when we get back?" Qrow asked.
"I have to fill out some paperwork when we get back. Probably going to take all night," Clover groaned.
"Typical Jimmy," Qrow said with a roll of his eyes. "What about you Agatha? Ruby and Yang invited me to play some games with them and the other kids. Penny will be there as well if you want to join in." He looked at me with narrow eyes.
To my credit, I kept my face neutral. "I've got business down in Mantle. Might take a while."
"What kind of business?" Clover asked.
"Oh you know. Just stuff," My face fell as I thought about where I was planning to visit. The others could sense my mood change and gratefully didn't ask me anything else.
When I arrived in Mantle the first thing I did was head to the nearest flower shop and bought some Hyacinths. Afterwards I went to another store to pick up an incense stick and holder. A tradition that I had picked up on from the years I had spent in Mistral. Then I went to the site where the police found Forrest's body. A memorial was already set up there. A picture of Forrest was propped up against the wall and several candles and flowers surrounded it.
I knelt down and added my own flowers to the pile and lit the incense. Placing my hands together I gave a prayer. "May the Great Tree ascend your soul on a safe passage to the afterlife."
Of course this did absolutely nothing. This was something the humans invented to bring them comfort in times of grief. It works for me and my brothers. When humans prayed to us we would hear them. Well, me and Light anyway. But those things were a headache and a half so I worried that if I tried to let the spirits hear their loved ones prayers then they would come back to haunt me. But still, I wanted to pay my respects. And it did make me feel better saying that. So the humans were on to something there.
Rising up to leave I heard a voice from behind me. "Who are you?" Startled, I turned around, a hand on Yin. A woman with blonde hair decked in a green outfit raised her hands up. "Woah now. I'm not trying to start anything."
I let out a breath and let go of my weapon. "Sorry. I spent a couple of years in Vacuo so I'm a little jumpy."
The woman laughed. "I wouldn't blame you there. And even then things have been so tense here lately everyone's on edge. But you still haven't answered my question. I usually know most people around here and I can safely say I haven't seen you before."
"Oh, right, sorry. I'm Agatha Griseo. I just arrived a couple of weeks ago," I introduced while holding my hand out for her to shake.
The woman gave me a suspicious look. "Last I heard the borders were closed."
I gave a sheepish grin. "I might have stolen an airship back at Argus."
"Really?" The woman laughed.
"It was an emergency and that Cordovin bitch wouldn't hear us out!" I argued. "Now you're going to tell me who you are. My arm is getting kinda numb here."
The woman finally clasped my hand and said "Robyn Hill."
My eyes widened in surprise. "So you're the campaigner Forrest wouldn't shut up about. He told me a lot about you."
"Yeah, he and I go way back. So how did you meet him?" Robyn asked as she released my hand.
"We met on the back of a prison transport shortly after I got here." At Robyn's dumbfounded look I added. "Hey, I never said I got away with that stolen airship."
"And Ironwood let you get off scot free?" Robyn asked, getting suspicious once more.
"I'm helping some friends out with a personal emergency. Once we explained the situation he let us be."
Thankfully Robyn didn't press the issue. "Cool. Well I guess I'll see you around Headphones."
Headphones? That's the best nickname she can come up with for me?
I brushed off the annoyance and tried to follow Robyn. "Hey wait. I've actually been wanting to talk to you. I wanted to know what your plans for Mantle were and what you're going to do once you get that council seat."
Robyn chuckled. "You already think I'm going to win?"
"Your only rival is Jaquese Schnee. I wouldn't call that competition." Robyn laughed at that and we made small talk while Robyn guided me to the wall where construction was being held. I took stock of what supplies they had. Which wasn't much. "Looks like you guys can't really do a whole lot right now."
"Yeah. It's tough to get the supplies we need with Ironwood's big secret project," Robyn grumbled bitterly and I don't blame her. Thankfully from the research I've done before I got here it looks like they only need a few things. Some steel reinforcements. A few formwork materials. And a lot of cement and sand. How they already have some of the latter in the freaking snow I'll never know.
My scroll buzzed in my pocket and I pulled it out to see a message from Ruby. Hey it's almost time for dinner. Where are you?
Sending a reply I turned back to Robyn. "Looks like my friends are asking for me so I got to go."
Robyn nodded and clasped my hand. "It was good to meet you Agatha."
"Likewise. And I'll be around if you guys ever need help with something," I offered.
"Thanks. We'll take you up on that if we see you," she said and I started making my way back up to Atlas.
*Outside P.O.V.*
The next morning after making their rounds, Robyn and her huntresses came up to the construction site. To their amazement, progress seemed to be going faster today. It looked like they had more to work with. Robyn's attention was drawn to what sounded like an argument.
"Look, I don't know where the supplies came from. But they clearly didn't come from Atlas."
"That may be but the general does need supplies for his operation. It would benefit greatly if he could get ahold of these as well."
"These supplies are clearly meant for the wall."
Robyn approached one of the construction workers and an Atlas soldier. "What's all the commotion Ash?" she asked the worker.
Ash looked grateful at Robyn's appearance. "You are not going to believe this. When we came in this morning we found several crates of construction supplies all bundled up in a large gray bow. This was clipped to the bow." Ash handed her a card with her name written on it.
Robyn opened it up and read out loud.
Supplies for the wall.
Good luck in the election.
G.O.E
"Who's G.O.E?" The soldier asked.
"Can't say I know. But the supplies clearly have my name on it," Robyn said, showing the soldier the card.
"Very well ma'am. But I will need to brief the general about this," the soldier said, looking rather worried as he took his leave.
Joanna laughed. "Go ahead. Not like he can do anything about it."
Robyn smiled and addressed her friends. "Come on ladies. We've got work to do."
Okay yeah, I know. There were a few more people in the election polls but Jacques and Robyn were the only two that mattered so I'm not going to bring the others up.
