A/N: Hello, friends. Thought I re-post the rules for this story at the beginning of this chapter both because I deleted the original chapter, seeing as I think that was the reason why the story kept coming up with no chapters, and also to refresh everyone on the rules themselves (And, as an explanation to anyone new who happens to read this and doesn't know.)

So, here ya go (Also, I updated the rules a bit.)

Rule 1) Perma-death: The story, no matter the outcome, will follow the dice rolls. If that means someone like Jaune dies. They die.

That being said, if a main character loses all hit points in a fight they will enter a Bleeding Out state where they will die in about three rounds, no Saving Rolls required. To save the critically injured character a companion character can use their action to Stabilize the injured character, bringing them back to 1HP, give them a potion, or, use an ability like Jaune's Lay on Hands.

However, if the character is attacked while in the Bleeding out state, after they are Stabilized, but not healed above 1HP, or fall to a Critical Hit they will flat out die with no hope of coming back.

Pray that doesn't happen.

Rule 2) Leveling up system: (Class progress) The characters may level up an attribute beyond 20. A character can also level up beyond 20 in their respective class, but can only do so by take points in a Mythic path or another class. The Mythic path will be unlocked in story, at an undetermined point.

Multi-classing begins at Level 3. (If you have an opinion on any of the characters gaining a second class tell me in the reviews.)

Rule 3) Dust will be used in the story, but only as a means of casting spells. Certain characters can further boost their abilities (i.e. Semblances) by using Dust in combination with their Aura.

Rule 4) Aura and Semblances are still a thing. Please see the two chapters on their specific rules. If these need to updated, whether they be underpowered/overpowered, Please, do inform me on how to make it better in the reviews. There will be no hand-holding for our favorites, but I don't want them to just die either from some botched dice roll.

That's no fun.

Rule 5) Dice rolls will largely be d20s, barring a few others. I will be showing in Italics what the various save DCs will be, and then the results. There will be no cheating. If Jaune rolls for a Critical Strike, but only rolls for six points of damage then that's that.

Also, once again, a very special shout out to Chaoticnumbness, Master and all those who gave a suggestion on how to make the Feats better as well as the story itself. You guys are all truly awesome!

P.S.Jaune's Charm score is now 16, while Ruby's is 24 after the end of the last couple of chapters.

And, as always, RWBY is own by Roosterteeth and the late Monty Oum

Chapter 5

Deep in the private sanctum of the Church of Salem a group of senior cultists and priests found themselves kneeling before a figure in red robes on a throne-like chair alongside various officials including the King's High Chancellor, the Captain of the Royal Guard and the Knight Commander of the Red Guard.

Before them all was one lone guard, still wounded from his fight with the escaping prisoners and the Silver-Eyes and her companion.

The figure on the throne stared down at the guard before her, her eyes and upper face hidden by a delicate, red veil, in silence for a moment, before turning her head to the man kneeling next to the wounded man in stony silence and asked in a sultry tone, "Is that all then, Guard Captain?"

The man glanced at his wounded subordinate before nodding and said in reply, "Aye, High Priestess. That is all the information we have on the matter. The rest of my men were busy putting out fires and fighting the sudden influx of criminal elements in an around the upper boroughs. Ma'am."

"Mm, pity then." She replied politely, clearly disappointed at the lack of information. She waved a hand at the guard captain as she said, "Very well then, Captain. You may go. See to the city. It wouldn't do to let the Capital of this fine country burn to the ground."

The guard captain nodded before turning and swiftly leaving, ignoring the look of fear and betrayal on the man he left behind.

The High Priestess then turned her attention to the man before her. She leaned forwards and smiled coldly as she looked down at him and said, "Now, what am I to do with you?"

"Please, Priestess," the man wheezed in fear and pain, "I have a family. A wife and daughter. Please!"

The woman in red shook her head as she sat back and said with mock sympathy, "A pity then. Had you died in glorious combat, your family might have been recompensed."

"Now, though," She lifted her hand as a small ball of flame appeared in the palm of it. "Now, the only way they can be saved from your cowardice, is for you die."

Then she set him ablaze.

The surrounding officials watched in silence as the man died screaming, burning to death. All the while the woman on the throne grinned maliciously at the guard's screams.

It didn't take long for his body to collapse in a heap of ashes.

Once it had the Priest snapped her finger. From a side room a pair of lowly maids in ashy grey, torn dresses walked in. "Yes, Mistress?" They asked at the same time.

"Sweep up the sacrifice's ashes, please. And, do be careful with it." The High Priestess said with a smile. "It was for his family."

"Aye, Mistress," the slaves chorused again and began sweeping up the remains of the guard.

"And be sure to scatter it over the rose gardens with the proper intonations." The Priestess said as an afterthought. The pair of slave priestess-cum-servants agreed with their mistress once more, turning to bow at her before leaving the room once more.

Throughout it all the men and women in the room remained silent.

The High Priestess tapped a finger on the arm of her throne for a moment before she turned to the King's High Chancellor and asked, "Tell me, Chancellor Valoran, where were the fugitives last seen?"

The chancellor swallowed before saying, "They were last seen around Traitor's Rise, Ma'am."

The High Priestess seemed to paused for a moment at that, then she frowned as she asked, "And, your Hounds have yet to find the trail again, Chancellor?"

The balding man swallowed again and nodded before saying, "Unfortunately, yes. The Hounds failed to pick up the scent after finding the remains of a pack of Creeps. And , there were to tracks to find anywhere around Traitor's Rise." He shrugged as he said, "It's like they simply disappeared."

The High Priestess continued to tap a finger on her chair as she replied, "Hm, interesting." She then turned her sights on the Captain of the Royal Guard and the Knight Commander of the Red Guard and asked, "And, what of you, gentlemen? Good news, I hope."

The two looked between each other before the Knight Commander said, "The Second Expeditionary Forces have breached the outer defenses of the Valean Frontier to the North and East. The First and Third Expeditionary Forces have done the same with the Vacuan Outskirts."

The High Priestess smiled then at that and said in a sickly sweet tone, "So, the King's glorious plan continues."

The Royal Guard Captain then nodded as he said as an afterthought, "Yes, if we could have some of the Lady's Children to help secure our new holdings we could continue to expand with impunity."

The High Priestess's smile turned to a grin as she replied, "But, of course, Captain Sewell. It is the role of the Church to aid the King in all he does. For the good of Acadia, of course."

"And, our recent failure wouldn't hinder this, yes?" The chancellor then asked. The Captain of the Royal Guard and the Knight Commander of the Red Guard flinched at that and glanced at each other again, but otherwise remained kneeling before the priestess with their heads down. The other, lesser officials did the same.

The High Priestess gave the chancellor a bright smile as she said, "Why, of course not, Chancellor Valoran. As I said, the Church is here for Arcadia in all things." Then she frowned as she threatened him with, "But, if you fail us again in this matter. You will lose your protection from The Children. Is that understood?"

The chancellor nodded, as did the other officials, and said, "Understood, High Priestess. I will inform the King of this proclamation and ensure that the Hounds redouble their efforts in their Hunt."

The High Priestess nodded as she said with rising fervor, "Good. Remember the Goddess gives and takes in equal measure, but it is, We, alone, her clergy, who give voice to her demands. And, She demands a sacrifice. Of a Silver-Eyes."

She then slammed her balled fist down on her armrest as she roared, "So, find me one! Or, prepare to face the consequences of your Failures!"

She then sat back with a sigh exasperation as the chamber echoed and reechoed with the vitriol of her wrath. She steepled her hands before her as she said heavily, "Chancellor, I say this not to scare you. But, to ensure you what will happen next, should you fail." She reached up and rubbed at where her left eye would be under her veil absently as she said, "Trust me, Chancellor. The Goddess deals out her punishments equally among all her servants. No matter how devout they might be."

"Understood, High Priestess." The chancellor replied with a bow.

"Now then, enough of this." The woman in red stated with a more charming smile as she turned to one of the other, lesser bureaucrats. "Tell me, Lady Constance, how goes the relief efforts in the Southern Villages. I hear that the White Fang raid the fields there once more…"

/ /

An hour later found the High Priestess in her chambers, alone, rubbing at her temples to alleviate a encroaching headache. She paused as a sudden gust of wind brushed her veil away from her face.

(Perception Check, DC10; Roll Results (High Priestess): 12 +1 = 13; Success)

She grimaced at that before turning to speak with her latest guest, shifting her face to a more neutral look as she said, "Proctor Romulus, so good to see you."

"Mistress," said a bald, pale, heavily tattooed man dressed in robes of the Church's colors as she found him kneeling before him. He looked up at her, revealing unnatural eyes of pupil-less, glowing red pinpricks in fathomless black, and grinned, showing a mouthful of shark teeth, as he asked, "How might I serve the Goddess Salem this day?"

The High Priestess smiled back at the Grimm Master as she said before motioning him to stand, "A task perfectly suited for you, Grey. Rise."

"And, what task is that, Mistress Fall?" The man, Grey, asked as he stood back up.

The woman grinned with sinister delight as she said, "Why hunting down heretics, of course."

The man chuckled as he rubbed his hands together in delight and said jubilantly, "Excellent! Where should I start?"

The High Priestess frowned at that and said, "Traitor's Rise."

"Ah, the remains of the Arc Estate then." The man said with a nod of acknowledgement. "But, of course." Then he shook his head as he said, "Why such an inconsequential, lowly family as that deserves to have such a name at the site of their last stand, I'll never know."

"Never fear, my Lady," The man continued as he cast an incantation and summoned forth four Grimm from the black pools around his feet. "My hounds and I never fail to run our targets down to ground."

The High Priestess gave the man a pained smile before informing him of his targets: a young woman with silver eyes in a tattered red hood and cloak, and a paladin of the Order of Sacred Light. Grey paused at the mention of the Silver Eyes, then nodded at the High Priestess in silent acknowledgement of what that meant for him should he fail.

Then he left.

After he had, the priestess sighed and rubbed at her forehead as she slumped in her chair, and muttered to herself, "Inconsequential? Hardly. I find that family to be very consequential."

Another breeze blew through the room and lifted her veil enough to show the face beneath. The skin was smooth and pale as porcelain save for the jagged scarring of meat around the empty socket of her left eye.

/ /

Jaune sighed as he looked over at his companion while they sat around a fire pit. Ruby was currently working on her stolen-scavenged-rifle, and had been doing so now for several hours. Ever since they have finally evaded their pursuers, in fact.

He had ran them ragged, trying to put as much distance between them and the Cult as much as possible. Once he was sure they were safely away, or as close to it as possible, he stopped to let them rest. His companion hadn't once complained or faltered as he drove them onwards.

He was quite impressed by that.

(Perception Check, DC10; Roll Results (Advantage due to Charm Level): 3 + 1, 11 + 2 = 4, 12; Success)

He could tell that she was still hurting from her time in the Capitol of Arcadia. But he didn't know how to comfort her, his own past making it hard to get close to another these days, though, she had somehow found a way inside his shields within less than a day.

So, not knowing how to help, all he could do was let her fix up and repair the strange weapon that she had told him about. Still, if nothing else he felt stronger for having met her.

Or, maybe that was simply from surviving the madness they had just fled.

Regardless, it was time to go.

(Tinkering Check, DC 15; Roll Results (With Advantage): 16 + 3, 4 + 3 = 19, 7; Success)

He sat up to say something about that, only to stop as he heard his companion give a small cry of elation. She turned to him and showed her work.

He blinked, noticing that the… gun was different. The bent portion of the barrel had been cut away and the damaged stock had been sanded down to a less… painful look. He had no idea about any of the other damage done to the thing. He looked at her and asked, "Did you fix it?"

Ruby grinned at him before looking down at the rifle with a gentle smile as she stroked the length of the barrel and said softly, "Kind of. It has less range in its current state and I'll probably only be able to fire a single shot or two before it jams again. But," she looked back up at him, her eyes gleaming, "I'll be able to help out a bit more during the next fight."

(+ 1 to Charm Stat)

Jaune smiled at her and place a hand comfortingly on her shoulder as he said, "That's not true, were of immense help against that creature the priest summoned." He then let go of her and stepped back in sudden embarrassment as he said, "Not to mention how you save my life in the church."

(+ 1 to Charm Stat, Passive Bonus unlocked)

She smiled at that, tears gleaming in her eyes. She wiped at her eyes as she said, "Heh. Thanks Jaune."

He nodded back at her silently and smiled at her before asking while nodding his head off in the distance, "Well then, shall we?"

She sighed at that, shaking her head, before smiling beatifically at him as she said, "Yeah. Let's get on with it then."

They gathered up their supplies and equipment before putting out the fire and started off again.

/ /

They came upon the shelter that Jaune was looking for an hour later as evening was turning into night. It was an old ruin. One that was half burned down, half fallen apart with a massive heap on the ground before the tallest structure still standing.

Ruby noted the frown on Jaune's face as he looked at the ruin, and made to ask if he was alright only for him to point out at the ruin before them. She blinked and looked out there to find a bunch of large shapes wandering around. Large, bipedal shapes.

She swallowed as she looked at that and clutched at Jaune's sleeve. He looked at her and watched as she closed her eyes and frowned, focusing on the creatures beyond them.

(Favor Enemy (Grimm), Insight Check; Roll Result: 7 + 2, 18 + 2 =9, 20)

Ruby then opened her eyes, the silver seeming flashing in the light from rising moon, as she said, "Grimm. Creeps to be exact." She looked at him then as she went on, "They're a rarely seen type, largely dwelling underground or in deep caves." She looked out at the Creeps moving around down below the rise they were on, and said, "They tend to travel in smaller packs than other breeds. Three to five members at most. Unless there's an alpha."

"Alpha?" Jaune asked as he looked out over the new threat.

"Bigger, smarter, older sub breed of most Grimm," Ruby returned as she unslung her new rifle. She looked it over once more before nodding in satisfaction at what she was saw and slid the bolt on the side back after slotting in a bullet. She sighed and said, "Looks like we got just one more fight to go before we can rest, huh?"

Jaune nodded as he loosened his sword and donned his shield, answering with a simple, "Yeah."

"Well then, let's do it." Ruby returned and started down the rise with Jaune behind her.

/ /

The trio of Creeps crept around the heap of rubble with one occasionally stopping to sniff the air before moving off again. Jaune and Ruby observed that for a moment from where they were lying down in the field of overgrown grass around the ruin's perimeter, a broken down, low stone wall before getting up to sneak in closer.

(Stealth Check, (Jaune) (Disadvantage from Plate); Roll Result: 19, 3 = 3)

Snap!

As he was getting up Jaune stepped on a twig. At the sound of a twig snapping under foot, the Creeps stopped what they were doing and sniffed the air

(Perception Check (Scent) (Advantage); Roll Result: 6 - 2, 9 - 2 = 7)

But, as they did, a breeze blew by overhead from behind the Grimm. Jaune held his breath, and waited. Eventually, the creatures shook themselves and went back to what they were doing.

Jaune sighed with relief before turning to give his friend a thumbs up. She gave one back and started forwards once more. He made to follow her only to pause as he realized what he called her.

A friend. He felt his face twitch at that. He hadn't had a friend in a long, long time. He inhaled then as he started to move behind Ruby once more. He once more vowed to keep her safe.

No matter what.

(Stealth Check, (Ruby); Roll Result: 7 + 5 = 12)

(Stealth Check, (Jaune) (Disadvantage from Plate); Roll Result: 7, 9 = 7)

This time, as they made their way closer, Jaune kicked an unseen rock as he made his way closer. He cursed under his breath as the Creeps began to snarl and hiss as they were once more alerted and began to move towards his position.

He drew his sword and made to move in and engage the enemy. Ruby beat him to it.

She stayed in the crouch she had been using to make her way forwards as she took her rifle in hand and lined up her first shot. She fired.

(Roll to Attack (Ruby Rose): 1; Roll Result: Critical Failure)

(Roll for damage, 1d4 for misfire; Roll Result 3 = 3 points of Damage)

Only to curse as the gun misfired, a muffled bam going off within the chamber. The small incandescent burst of flames scorching her as well.

She quickly attempted to repair the rifle before the Creeps could close in, having spotted both her and Jaune by now.

(Initiative Roll, Ruby: 12 + 3 = 15)

(Initiative Roll, Jaune: 1 = 1) (Oh, Jaune, no.) (Ya hate to see it.)

(Initiative Roll, Creeps: Creep (1) 18 + 1 = 19, Creep (2) 4 + 1 = 5, Creep (3) 9 + 1 = 10)

(Initiative Order; Creep (1) 19, Ruby 15, Creep (3) 10, Creep (2) 5, and Jaune 1)

The lead Grimm shrieked with rage as it charged towards Ruby before attempting to pounce on her. Jaune moved to disrupt it.

(Reaction (Jaune Arc):Protection-Disadvantage to Attack)

(Roll for Attack (Creep (1): 6 + 5, 10 + 5 = 11, 15; Ruby Rose AC 14; Roll Result: Failure)

The Creep wasn't expecting another to be standing in its way and misjudged the timing of its leap. It attempted recover and land on its feet before them.

(Acrobatics Check,DC 10; Roll Result: 3 + 1 = 4; Failure)

It didn't and fell face first into the ground, rolling a bit before coming to a stop before Jaune and Ruby, prone and dazed for a moment.

Ruby took that as an opportunity to fix her rifle. She popped the bolt and took out a file, quickly attempting to dislodge the jammed and busted projectile.

(Bonus Action, Firearms Specialist; Tinker Check: 15 + 3 = 18; Roll Result: Success) (I realized after looking over the Feat that Ruby could have used her Reaction to roll a d20 and repair the rifle before rolling for Initiative, but I think that she would've had to roll a Nat 20 to be the Nat 1, so… Either way, she would've had to do a bonus action to repair it if possible.)

She deftly slid the file under the busted round and popped it out before racketing the bolt again, loading the next round. Then she aimed the rifle and one of the other two Creeps and fired.

(Roll to Attack (Ruby Rose): 9 + 7 = 16; Creep (2) AC 14; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage: 4d10+3 (Silver Eyes Vulnerabilities); Roll Result: 8 + 3 + 2 + 2 + 3 = 18 points of Damage)

The shot cracked with a resounding report and zipped by Jaune's head to blast the incoming Grimm in the head. The projectile blew the top of its skull off as it charged in. Its headless corpse collapsed in a rolling tumble before starting to dissipate entirely.

Ruby smiled at that even as the last Creep closed in.

It also attempted to pounce, this time on the imposing form of Jaune Arc.

(Roll for Attack (Creep (3): 18 + 5 = 23; Jaune Arc AC 20; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage: 1d6 + 2; 6 + 2 = 8 points of damage)

The Creep slammed into Jaune, slashing at his with its claws and scraping up against him with with its bony, scaly hide. He grunted and tried to stay upright.

(Strength Check, DC 13 (Jaune Arc); Roll Result: 5 + 3 = 8; Failure)

Only to be knocked off his feet by the unexpected weight of the Grimm. It maneuver to bite him then.

(Bonus Action (Bite), Roll to Attack (Creep (3) (Advantage due to Prone): 6 + 4, 9 + 4 = 10, 13; Jaune Arc AC 20; Roll Result: Failure)

But its large, misshapen, beak-like maw failed to find purchase on his chest plate. Without really thinking it over Jaune then instinctively attack in turn, swinging his longsword one-handed. It flashed brightly with divine light as he did.

(Roll to Attack (Jaune Arc): 17 + 5 = 22; Creep (3) AC 14; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage: 1d8+3 plus 2d8 for Divine Smite; Roll Result: 4 + 3 = 7 + 5 + 1 (Divine Smite) = 13 points of Damage)

The sudden powerful strike rent through the Grimm's armored hide, cleaving deeply into and through the meat beneath before eventually exiting across its throat. The creature let out a warbling, keening cry as it stumbled away from him before collapsing and started to disintegrate just like its fellow.

Gasping for breath, he stumbled back to his feet before clutching a hand to his chest and healed himself once more.

(Swift Action, Lay on Hands (Self): Heal 5 HP) (For some reason, even though at Level 1 Jaune had five uses of Lay on Hands, at Level 2 (Yes, he and Ruby have now leveled up. For more on that go to the end for their new HP amount.) he now only has 10 points of Lay on Hands in total, at least According to DnD Beyond. As the DM, I'm going to ignore that and simple give Jaune Ten Uses of Lay on Hands like they have in Pathfinder, okay? Thumbs up Emogi)

Then he shook his head and readied himself for his next opponent whatever that was.

The last Creep had clambered back to its feet then. It glanced between the two of them, assessing them, before shrieking once more and made to attack Ruby once more.

Jaune moved to get in its way, once more.

(Reaction (Jaune Arc):Protection-Disadvantage to Attack)

(Roll for Attack (Creep (1) (Bite): 14 + 4, 5 + 4 = 18, 9; Ruby Rose AC 14; Roll Result: Failure)

(Roll for Attack (Creep (1) (Tail Whip): 4 + 5 = 9; Ruby Rose AC 14; Roll Result: Failure)

Once more it was surprised by Jaune's presence and misjudged the distance between the two of them, it's maw clamped down on air instead of flesh. It then tried to whip its tail around at her but Ruby saw it coming and ducked under it before coming back up to bask it in the head with the stock of her rifle.

(Bonus Action, Pommel Strike (Rifle Stock); Roll to Attack (Ruby): 5 + 7 = 12; Creep (1) AC 14; Roll Result: Failure)

Only to see it do nothing, only causing the Grimm to hiss at her in angrily. She didn't bat an eye at that, dropping her Rifle to draw and slash at it with her scimitar instead.

(Roll to Attack (Ruby Rose): 9 + 5 = 14; Creep (2) AC 14; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage: 2d6+3 (Silver Eyes Vulnerabilities); Roll Result: 3 + 3 + 3 = 9 points of Damage)

The scimitar's blade ripped into the Creep's shoulder, cutting in deeply. It let out a hissing shriek of pain at that before glaring at her as its eyes began glow a brilliant red. It then screed at her, preparing to leap on her.

That's when Jaune attacked.

(Bonus Action, Shield Bash; Roll to Attack (Jaune): 12 + 5 = 17; Creep (1) AC 14; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage, 1d6 + 3; Roll Result: 5 + 3 = 8 points of damage)

The Creep wasn't expecting it as he crashed into it then, flipping it over as he did so. It let out an almost dog-like yelp of pain as it struck the ground. Then it began to dissipate into the same oily smoke as its fellows.

Jaune was puzzled by that and looked over at Ruby. She shrugged as she said, "Maybe you broke it's neck when you hit it?"

He shrugged again before sheathing his blade, turning to walk over to her again healing himself along the way.

"Rwaaarrrhrr!"

They looked up as a strange call echoed across the ruins before turning at the sound of movement behind them to find another five Creeps approaching them, including one that was far larger than the other. Behind that, distantly, they could see even more figures in the gloom of Twilight.

Ruby gaped at that for a moment before Jaune grasped her by the shoulder, shook her, and hollered, "Run!"

She nodded and picked up her weapon before taking off after Jaune as he dashed across the open, weed-infected field before them. As they sprinted across the field as quickly as possible the largest of the Creeps caught up with them and began to attack them.

That's when the ground fell out beneath them. Jaune and Ruby cried out in surprise while the Grimm shrieked in shock itself.

(Roll for Damage, Fall Damage 2d6 for falling 20ft; Roll Result: 1 + 6 = 7 points of damage reduced to 3 for Jaune and Ruby and 1 for Creep (Resistance)

They fell down about twenty feet onto a heap of broken, rotting wooden planks and other rubble. But they all kept their heads as they fell with Jaune and Ruby rolling as soon as they landed. The Creep simply landed squarely on its feet in a wide stance.

Ruby looked up at it, seeing the large size of the Creep as well as the spikes all over its bony hide.

(Favor Enemy (Grimm), Insight Check; Roll Result: 12 + 2, 7 + 2 = 14, 9)

Her eyes widen as she realized what it was. She turned to Jaune as she cried, "Jaune! It's an Alpha!"

He shook his head as he asked in confusion, "It's a - What?!"

"We need to go! Now!" She ordered as she turned to sprint away only to stop, confused as where to go, seeing that they were in some kind of room or chamber but unable to see more beyond that in the dim lighting

(Perception Check; Roll Result: 14 + 1 = 15)

Jaune watched as the Creep Alpha hissed at them and began to stalk towards them. He looked behind them as saw a door. "There!" He pointed and began to run once more.

The Alpha loosed a hissing cry as it began to charged after the two of them. Ruby ran at the closed door, hoping against hope that it was unlocked as she made to shove it open.

(Strength Check, DC 10; Roll Result: 11 + 2 = 13; Success)

She bashed it opened just in time for Jaune to run through behind her. Ruby then slammed it closed on the Alpha as it made to cross the threshold, bracing herself against it as she did so.

(Strength Check, DC 12 (Dc 10 plus Str modifier); Roll Result: 5 + 2 = 7; Failure)

With another hissing scream the Grimm thundered towards the door and promptly bashed itself against it. The door didn't budge beyond a mild rattle.

The Grimm, on the other hand, stumbled backwards with a whining keen before flopping down, prone. Stunned.

Ruby sighed as she saw that, after having cracked the door open a pinch, then closed and latched the door. Hoping it would hold long enough for them to get out of here.

She turned around and found that wasn't to be. They were now locked and trapped in a small chamber. One that was occupied. By half a dozen corpses.

A few were collapsed about the rotting floor in various places. But most were fallen and scattered about in front of another corpse lying half against the wall opposite of the door.

And, standing over it, was Jaune.

(Insight Check; Roll Result: 14)

She couldn't see his face from where she was standing, but the way he stood there she could tell that he was hurting. She stepped towards him, one hand outstretched, as she asked, "Jaune?"

He said nothing, looking over the body.

She stepped up next to him and looked down at it.

It was of a man, she thought. Though, it was hard to tell now. It was a skeleton in shining plate. One covered in the remains of arrows. By its sides were a uniquely beautiful longsword and and a shining white shield with a pair of golden crescent moons on its surface.

She frowned at that.

Jaune's last name, it was Arc.

Crescent moons. Arc. She closed her eyes in sympathy and sorrow as she realized who this was. She reached out and clutched his arm in comfort. She didn't want to ask it, but she had to be sure. So, she did.

"Jaune," she whispered quietly, clutching at him tightly. She swallowed, ignoring the sudden shriek from the other room, and asked, "Who is it?"

He said nothing for a moment. Then Jaune closed his eyes as he said in almost a prayer, "My father."

Then he knelt before the corpse and prayed in silence. Ruby let him, remaining standing while she waited for him to finish.

When he did, he stood back while subtly wiping the tears falling from his face. Ruby said nothing to that, only giving him a tight hug. After a moment, he clutched her back, just as tightly.

(+ 2 to Charm Stat)

She looked up at him as he then stepped back away from her, but not out of her embrace, and asked, "What happened here, Jaune?"

He wiped the remainder of tears from his eyes and heaved a breath out before he said, "It was back when the Cult first started gaining power over the Kingdom. My family were of a strong moral character and attempted to rally others to their cause as they refuted the Cults power. For doing so, they were first banished from the King's Council before being driven out of Arcadian politics entirely, for fear of retribution."

He looked off into the middle distance as he remembered. Of being sent away to the Order as things started to worsen.

"Finally, after publicly speaking out one too many times, the Church of Salem, as it came to be called, ordered my family's destruction." He closed his eyes tightly and said, "My entire family. My mother, my father, all of my sisters. Everyone."

He looked to her as he said, "I am the last Arc alive."

He smiled sadly at her as he reached out and wiped away the tears streaming heedlessly down her face as she looked at him. "It is fine, Miss Rose." He whispered to her then. "I have long since gotten over the grief of their loss." He looked back at his father's corpse as he growled out, "Only the pain of surviving remains. That, and a need for revenge."

He sighed then and slumped saying, "If only I knew who was responsible."

He looked over his father's corpse for a moment before saying, "Forgive me, Father. But I need this more than you now."

Then he reached down and started disassembling his fathers armor to wear. Ruby watched him but said nothing before looking around at the other corpses for additional weaponry or armor.

(Short Rest, Characters fully healed and abilities restored. Jaune heals 3 points and regains one use of Lay on Hands. Gains 4 points of AC for The Arc Hereditary Plate armor and The Crocea Mors shield and Sword. Ruby heals 6 points. Gains 1 point of AC from donning +1 Leather armor)

"Are you ready?" Jaune asked as he grasped the latch for the door. Ruby ratcheted the bolt on her rifle in response and nodded. He nodded back and jerked the door open before stepping back.

Ruby swiveled around the corner next to the doorway into a crouch and took aim at the Grimm in the room. There were now three of them, the Alpha and two other Creep. She barely processed that before she fired, aiming for the Alpha, ignoring how the three Grimm began charging toward her position as soon as Jaune had opened the door.

(Roll to Attack (Ruby Rose): 13 + 7 = 20; Creep (Alpha) AC 16; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage: 4d10+3 (Silver Eyes Vulnerabilities); Roll Result: 3 + 8 + 9 + 5 + 3 = 28 points of Damage)

The thunderous retort of the rifle echoed throughout the chamber as she pulled the trigger, and before the flash of light and flame finished dissipating from the end of the barrel the Alpha was dealt a grievous wound, with one arm-leg nearly being severed from the massive impact.

Then, before the Grimm could finish shrieking with pain, she wheeled back into the room and Jaune closed and sealed the door. Jaune then Grinned at her as he said, "I think you made them mad, Rubes!"

She just grinned back at him before frowning as they heard the Alpha loose a different type of scream. A howl, one for reinforcements.

(Reinforcements in 3 turns, 1d4 + 1)

At the sounds of rapidly approaching stomps, she backed away from the door as she said, "Here they come."

Jaune nodded before stepping back with her, his sword at the ready. She couldn't help but notice that he was grinning, and that made her smile, too.

(Strength Check, DC 10; Roll Result: 16 + 2 = 18; Success)

The Creep stormed through the latched door without stopping right into the trap Jaune and Ruby had set up: a pile of jagged, broken bones that Jaune then set on fire with a jar of oil and a torch.

(Rough Terrain, Burning Field: 2d4 fire damage, 3 turns)

The Grimm stalled at the rough terrain and that's when the battle began in earnest.

(Initiative Roll, Ruby: 10 + 3 = 13)

(Initiative Roll, Jaune: 4 = 4)

(Initiative Roll, Creeps: Creep (1) 2 + 1 = 3, Creep (2) 17 + 1 = 18)

(Initiative Roll, Creep Alpha : 9 + 2 = 11)

(Initiative Order; Creep (2) 18, Ruby 13, Creep (Alpha) 11, Jaune 4, and Creep (1) 3)

(Reinforcements in 2 turns, 1d4 + 1)

The second standard Creep squeezed its way into the room behind the first and found itself unable to get by the flames, for now.

Ruby took that opportunity to loose an arrow at the Grimm while they loitered there. They were too close for her to use the rifle now.

(Roll to Attack (Ruby Rose): 7 + 7 = 14; Creep (1) AC 14; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage: 2d8+3 (Silver Eyes Vulnerabilities); Roll Result: 1 + 7 + 3 = 11 points of Damage)

The Grimm loosed a squealing hiss as the arrow struck it through the eye. Then it shook its head and glared at Ruby as its one remaining eye began to glow brightly with unbridled rage.

That's when the Alpha attempted to make its way through the small entrance, only to realize that there was room within. At least, not unless it forced its way in.

(Bonus Action, Shove (Alpha): 1 (Natural 1)

It wheezed, squeaking almost as it wedged itself in the doorway and found itself unable to move further.

Jaune took that as an opportunity to deal some damage himself. First, he flung his javelin at the Alpha.

(Roll to Attack (Jaune Arc): 2 + 5 = 7; Creep (Alpha) AC 16; Roll Result: failure)

It missed, striking somewhere in the other room. Somehow, missing the trapped Grimm entirely. Jaune blinked at that then shrugged and flung one of the daggers they found in the room at the gravely wounded Creep within the room.

(Bonus Action: Roll to Attack (Jaune Arc): 6 + 5 - 5 (Bonus Action drawback) = 6, Creep (1) AC 14; Roll Result: Failure)

Once more, his attack missed. As he stood there looking on at that, the wounded, enraged Creep loosed a deep cry of rage and fear before it dashed into the burning, difficult terrain.

(Frightening Presence, DC 12: Jaune 19 + 1= 20, Ruby 20 (Natural 20); Roll Results: One Success, on Critical Success)

(Roll for damage, Difficult terrain; Roll Result: 3 + 3 = 6 points of damage reduced to 3

Both of them resisted the creature's unsettling presence having already experienced it before. And watched as it blindly ran into the burning bones field in its rage only fall and dissipate into the same oily black smoke as all its fellows.

(Rough Terrain, Burning Field: 2d4 fire damage, 2 turns)

(Reinforcements in 1 turns, 1d4 + 1)

That gave its ally enough room to make a leap at the humans across from the burning the field, easily making it with its ten foot of movement. Then it made to attack at Jaune.

(Roll for Attack (Creep (1) (Bite): 14 + 4 = 18; Jaune Arc AC 24; Roll Result: Failure)

(Roll for Attack (Creep (1) (Tail Whip): 15 + 5 = 20; Jaune Arc AC 24; Roll Result: Failure)

Only to do nothing against his newly superior armor and shield.

Ruby ignored the Creep for its Alpha instead, trusting Jaune to take care of it as she drew, notched and loosed at arrow at the Alpha.

(Roll to Attack (Ruby Rose): 11 + 7 = 14; Creep (Alpha) AC 16; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage: 2d8+3 (Silver Eyes Vulnerabilities); Roll Result: 5 + 2 + 3 = 10 points of Damage)

The arrow flew true, striking the Grimm through where its heart should've been, felling it instantly.

Jaune slashed at the last Creep, swinging mightily.

(Roll to Attack (Jaune Arc): 20 (Natural 20); Creep (2) AC 14; Roll Result: critical Success)

(Roll for Damage: 2d10+3 (Critical Hit); Roll Result: 3 + 5 + 3 = 11 points of Damage)

The blow should've been enough, but the Grimm just barely held on, its back split open all the way to the bone beneath. However, thanks to wielding his father's sword, Crocea Mors, the creature's normally tough hide was unable to resist it. He then made to bash it away with the shield component of the shield/sword combo.

(Bonus Action, Shield Bash; Roll to Attack (Jaune): 7 + 5 = 12; Creep (1) AC 14; Roll Result: Failure)

He just barely missed, the edges of the shield scraping off of the Creep's armored hide. It shook itself as though the blow had tickled it and made to attack him again.

(Roll for Attack (Creep (1) (Bite): 16 + 4 = 20; Jaune Arc AC 24; Roll Result: Failure)

(Roll for Attack (Creep (1) (Tail Whip): 9 + 5 = 14; Jaune Arc AC 24; Roll Result: Failure)

Once again, it failed to breach his armored form. As he faced off against the Grimm he saw beyond the dwindling fire more Creeps dropping down into the ruined remains of his ancestral home.

(Rough Terrain, Burning Field: 1d4 fire damage, 1 turns)

(Reinforcements 1d4 + 1; Roll Result: 4 + 1 = 5)

Five, in fact. He pointed them out to Ruby as he attempted to deal with the one before him once more.

(Initiative Roll, Creeps: Creep (3) 7 + 1 = 8, Creep (4) 12 + 1 = 13, Creep (5) 1 + 1 = 2, Creep (6) 4 + 1 = 5, and Creep (7) 5 + 1 = 6)

(New Initiative Order; Creep (2) 18, Ruby 13, Creep (4) 13, Creep (3) 8, Creep (7) 6, Creep (6) 5, Jaune 4, and Creep (5) 2)

Ruby nodded and looked at what was before them before swinging around to strike the Creep fighting with Jaune, hoping to kill it first, by bashing its skull in with the stock of her rifle.

(Bonus Action, Pommel Strike (Rifle Stock); Roll to Attack (Ruby): 6 + 7 = 13; Creep (2) AC 14; Roll Result: Failure)

She missed, the stock just bouncing off its skull like Jaune shield. She then wheeled around and fired at the nearest Grimm.

(Roll to Attack (Ruby Rose): 10 + 7 = 17; Creep (4) AC 14; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage: 4d10+3 (Silver Eyes Vulnerabilities); Roll Result: 3 + 10 + 5 + 9 + 3 = 30 points of Damage)

The single shot blew the offending Grimm away instantly. Scratch one Creep Ruby thought with a smile.

But that thunderous report instantly made the other four Grimm turn and start making their way towards where they were fighting, with three of them dashing in right away.

Jaune ignored it all, attempting to drive the last of the original Creeps into the fire.

(Bonus Action, Shield Bash; Roll to Attack (Jaune): 2 + 5 = 7; Creep (1) AC 14; Roll Result: Failure)

He missed and swung at it instead.

(Roll to Attack (Jaune Arc): 11 + 5 = 16; Creep (1) AC 14; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage: 1d10+3; Roll Result: 3 + 3 = 6 points of Damage)

And finished it off with a deft chop. Then he moved to take on the next one. Just as Ruby shot again, the Grimm forced to funnel through the narrow doorway once more.

(Roll to Attack (Ruby Rose): 18 + 7 = 25; Creep (3) AC 14; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage: 4d10+3 (Silver Eyes Vulnerabilities); Roll Result: 7 + 1 + 5 + 6 + 3 = 21 points of Damage)

Once more, the rifle kicked in her hand as another Creep died in an explosion of black smoke. Just as the last of the flames from their trap burned away, leaving only smoldering embers and blackened bone shards.

The path was open.

(New Initiative Order; Ruby 13, Creep (7) 6, Creep (6) 5, Jaune 4, and Creep (5) 2)

After squirming its way through the doorway the next two Creeps rushed into the room where the first one attempted to pounce on Jaune and the other one on Ruby.(Roll for attack, (Pounce) Creep (7): 13 + 5 = 18; Jaune Arc AC 24; Roll Results: Failure)

Jaune didn't both to try and parry his opponent as the Grimm misjudged the jumped and fell short of him, but he did move to impose Protection on the one charging towards Ruby.

(Reaction (Jaune Arc):Protection-Disadvantage to Attack)

(Roll for Attack, (Pounce) Creep (6): 17 + 5, 6 + 5 = 23, 11; Ruby AC 15; Roll Result: Failure)

Once more, he forced the Grimm to missed his companion. He smiled at that. Then it was his turn, and lucky for him, they were standing right next to each other. Perfect.

He moved around his target until the two were lined up then rushed towards it with his shield leading.

(Bonus Action, Shield Bash; Roll to Attack (Jaune): 18 + 5 = 23; Creep (7) AC 14; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage, 1d6 + 3; 2 + 3 = 5 points of damage not reduced to due enchanted shield) (According to what I've read any weapon, armor, or shield that has an enhancement of any level is considered magical, so… I know, I stretching it a bit. I'm sorry.)

The Creep let out an almost dog-like yelp as it was slammed backwards into its comrade. The second Grimm attempted to shrug off its counterparts weight then.

((Reflex Save): 14 + 1 = 15; Roll Result: Success) (As part of the Shield Bash Feat not only does the shield deal damage to a target if it hits, it also knock them back ten feet.)

It successfully sidestepped its fallen companion and watched as Jaune made to finish it off.

(Roll to Attack (Advantage) (Jaune Arc): 17 + 5, 2 + 5 = 22, 7; Creep (7) AC 14; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage: 1d10+3; Roll Result: 7 + 3 = 10 points of Damage)

With a single thrust, he plunged the blade in deeply, killing the Grimm in one go. It didn't even have the time to cry out before it died, dissipating into ash and smoke.

After that, the last Grimm made to attack as well. It, too, went after Ruby. It pushed its way past its fellow to bite and whip at her.

(Roll for Attack (Creep (5) (Bite): 12 + 4 = 16; Ruby Rose AC 15; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage, 1d8 + 2; Roll Results: 6 + 2 = 8 points of damage)

(Roll for Attack (Creep (5) (Tail Whip): 3 + 5 = 8; Ruby Rose AC 15; Roll Result: Failure)

Ruby hissed as the Creep bit down on her leg before forcing herself out it and dodged its follow up tail whip. She attempted to shove it away as she made to draw her scimitar again, having dropped her rifle once more.

(Bonus Action, Shove (Ruby Rose): 6 + 2 = 8; (Creep (5): 2 + 2 = 4; Roll Result: Success)

The Grimm wasn't expecting the sudden, if weak strength of the young woman and was pushed backwards, slipping on bone shards as it did so.

Ruby then swung her new scimitar at its head, hoping to lob it off in one go.

(Roll to Attack, (Ruby Rose): 8 + 6 = 14; Creep (5) AC 14; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage 2d6 + 4 (Silver Eyes Vulnerability); Roll Result: 3 + 2 + 4 = 9 points of damage)

The blade almost cleaved through the Grimm's thick, armored neck. Almost. It hissed at her then, eyes blazing with rage.

Her other opponent chose then to attack again.

(Roll for Attack (Creep (5) (Bite): 18 + 4 = 22; Ruby Rose AC 15; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage, 1d8 + 2; Roll Results: 5 + 2 = 7 points of damage)

(Roll for Attack (Creep (5) (Tail Whip): 9 + 5 = 14; Ruby Rose AC 15; Roll Result: Failure) (Ooh, close one.)

Ruby cried out in pain as the Creep bit into her side, rending the flesh therein. It was only through swift action that she dodged the follow up tail whip.

Jaune rushed to her side, speaking an incantation as he did so.

(Action (Spell-casting), Cure Wounds 1d8 + 2; Roll Result: 8 + 2 = 10 point healed to Ruby)

Then he struck the wounded with the pommel of his sword.

(Bonus Action, Pommel Strike; Roll to Attack (Jaune): 14 + 5 = 19; Creep (5) AC 14; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage, 1d4 + 3; Roll Result: 4 + 3 = 7 points of damage)

The Grimm collapsed instantly, its skull smashed in with a bit of black ichor dripping out before it vanished like all the others.

Then it was ruby's turn once again. She stepped into the last Grimm and swung her scimitar at it.

(Roll to Attack, (Ruby Rose): 10 + 6 = 16; Creep (6) AC 14; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage 2d6 + 4 (Silver Eyes Vulnerability); Roll Result: 1 + 2 + 4 = 7 points of damage)

It hissed at her as she cut a swathe through its hide. And, as it became enrage with her, she disengaged to hide behind Jaune.

And, just as before, Jaune was ready to add his protection should she need it. The Creep lunged around him to attack her, ignoring him as it did so.

(Roll for Attack (Creep (6) (Bite): 7 + 4 = 11; Ruby Rose AC 15; Roll Result: Failure)

(Roll for Attack (Creep (6) (Tail Whip): 4 + 5 = 9; Ruby Rose AC 15; Roll Result: Failure)

In its rage, the Creep thrashed around in front of her but Ruby was able to dodge with relative ease. It loosed a hissing roar all the while.

Jaune ignoring the screaming as he raised his father's sword in both hands and swung down.

(Roll to Attack (Jaune Arc): 11 + 5 = 16; Creep (7) AC 14; Roll Result: Success)

(Roll for Damage: 1d10+3; Roll Result: 4 + 3 = 7 points of Damage)

And, then it was over.

In the town of Sunsett, a man in black plate armor stopped before a board of wanted posters, looking it over for a moment before tearing off two and looking at them further. He grinned as he observed the two, his ginger hair moving softly in the breeze.

The girl on the one had a bounty of two thousand Lien with the caveat of being captured alive. The man in the other poster only had a reward of five hundred but his was for either live capture or death.

Good. This should be fun.

He hefted the massive two-handed mace he had and started off towards the nearest tavern, hoping to get a drunk on and maybe woo one of the less intelligent barmaids. He been here before, hopefully his luck would hold.

A/N: So, I might have made Jaune too strong here. But, I think its works out. Ruby's the power and he's the Tank, so, works for them at the moment. Now, if only Ruby would stop getting hurt so much.

Oh, well. Jaune and Ruby new level and Charm Score are below as well as the stat blocks for the Creeps.

Also, forgot that both Classes gain spells, so, Ruby can now heal as well.

Jaune (Level 2): 22hp, Charm Score: 19 (Source: Ruby Rose)

Ruby: (Level 2): 18hp, Charm Score (Level 1): 25 (Source: Jaune Arc) (Passive Bonus 1 (Ruby) +1 to Morale Checks while within 30ft of Jaune Arc, +1 to Silver Eyes Gaze DC and damage roll while near Jaune Arc and he is in danger)

I'm treating the Silver Eyes as something that gets stronger when bonded to friends, companions and loved ones. It certainly seems that way in the show, anyway.
