The lives we save. That one sentence kept going through Jamie's mind as he tried to get Ariana to concentrate.
"Ariana, I realize how hard this is for you right now, but I need you to concentrate. Can you give me two really big pushes? You still need to deliver the placenta."
Ariana nodded, tears still streaming down her cheeks. Jamie understood what she was going through. He and Eddie had gone through it themselves. Rolanil had taken Patrick, and in the process almost taken his life with him as a result of throwing himself from the staircase. Jamie nodded and looked up at Ariana.
"It's ok. You did great Ariana. All done. You can relax now."
Doctor Matthews looked at Jamie.
"One more thing on the checklist to take care of doctor."
Jamie felt heat come to his cheeks and he swallowed thickly. He'd always deferred the last thing on the checklist to Doctor Matthews. But he knew that he had to keep playing the role. Taking another breath, he it out slowly. He really hoped he was doing this right. Doctor Matthews gave him so guidance.
"It's probably been a while since you've done this."
Jamie nodded for show and one of the guards had turned around and threw invisible daggers at him.
"Don't you know what you're doing doc?"
Jamie felt his nose flare. He defended himself.
"If you haven't noticed, it does say MD on my coat, but it also says I'm a Pediatrician. Not an Obstetrician. It's been quite a long time since I've actually done this. Turn around please. Give the patient some privacy."
The guard seemed annoyed and turned his back towards Jamie. Jamie focused his attention on what he was doing. It broke his heart hearing Ariana crying. He'd found Eddie the same way when he brought Patrick back. She wouldn't look at anything or anybody. Doctor Matthews frowned and eyed all the guards with their backs turned still in the room with them.
"Ok gentlemen, you can all leave the room now."
All the guards seemed to take Doctor Matthews word and left, now only leaving her, Jamie and Ariana in the room. Only two nurses remained with them in case they were needed. Jamie let out a silent breath and fixed the sheet over Ariana and kept his tears at bay. He had to remain professional.
"You can relax now Ariana. Get some rest."
Ariana nodded but didn't look at Jamie at first. Removing his soiled gloves and mask, he still felt a slight sheen of sweat covering his forehead. He slowly rolled the stool he was on over towards Ariana and nodded towards her.
"Ariana, you have my word that I will do everything in my power to get your daughter back. You have my word. What's her name?"
Ariana managed to look Jamie in the eye.
"Clara. Her name is Clara."
Jamie smiled and gave a soft laugh.
"That's a beautiful name for a little girl. Have some rest. I'll come check on you in a little while."
Ariana managed to roll over onto her side and then closed her eyes, beginning to cry again. Jamie felt bad he couldn't do anything for her. At least right now. One of the nurses stepped up to Jamie and touched his cheek with a gloved hand.
"Let me take a look at that doctor. You might need stitches."
Jamie winced and frowned.
"Bub, are you ok?"
Jamie knew Eddie was referring to the small patch of gauze on his right cheek. He shrugged it off and zoned in on mother and son.
"There's my little guy and my special lady."
Eddie rocked Patrick for a moment and then eyed Jamie, giving him a look and raising her left eyebrow.
"You never answered my question. Are you ok?"
Jamie ran a hand over Patrick's tiny head and then frowned. He let out a semi-frustrated sigh.
"Do you remember the guy in the blue pin striped suit the first time we did this?"
Eddie searched her mind and then it clicked.
"Yeah, the guy who looked like he could be a club bouncer. Why?"
Jamie sucked in a breath and let it out slowly, lowering his voice.
"He hit me when I tried to grab for the baby I'd just delivered. The mother was frantic. This is really getting out of hand Ed. There's got to be a breaking point soon. He's controlling everything now. I feel like we're at a crossroads. The one thing that crossed my mind as I delivered that baby was the words: The lives we save.
I felt like I've been failing since we got here. I never told you about the bodies below the house. There are tunnels under the house. I told you that. But there are rooms filled with bodies of women who gave birth. I'm guessing Rolanil has been doing this for years. He's been taking the babies from their mother's and sending them to an underground illegal clinic in Red Hook."
Eddie felt a lump form in her throat, and she tried to swallow to make it dissipate. But it wasn't working.
"Jamie, we have to do something. What if he tries to take Patrick again? What if something happens to me and you aren't here, and they stick me down there in one of those rooms?"
Jamie was trying not to play into his worst fears. He wasn't going to let anything, or anyone hurt his family. Eddie and Patrick were everything to him. He'd die before he let anyone hurt them.
