Chapter 12: The Semi Final Fiasco

The atmosphere in the Colosseum crackled with anticipation as Phil once again took center stage, the crowd's energy reaching a fever pitch. Sonic, with his trademark confidence, received a resounding cheer, the crowd eager to witness the speedster in action. On the other hand, Knuckles, met with a chorus of boos, stood firm and unyielding.

"Ladies and gentlemen, it's time for the semi-finals of the Phil Cup! Our first semi finalist is the fastest thing alive, Sonic the Hedgehog!"

Phil's booming voice echoed through the arena, amplifying the cheers from Sonic's enthusiastic fans.

Sonic, with a wink and a thumbs-up to the crowd, reveled in the cheers, ready to showcase his speed once more. Meanwhile, Knuckles stood stoically from his corner, unfazed by the disdain from the audience.

"And his opponent, the Guardian of the Master Emerald, Knuckles the Echidna!"

The boos grew louder, but Knuckles remained steadfast, his eyes locked onto Sonic with a determined glare.

On the sidelines, Sora, Donald, Goofy, and Shadow observed the unfolding spectacle. Shadow's crimson eyes bore into Knuckles, a sense of foreboding lingering in the air. Sora leaned in, whispering to the hedgehog.

"You sense something off about Knuckles, don't you?"

Shadow nodded, "There's darkness brewing inside him, and it goes beyond a rivalry with Sonic."

As the tension mounted in the arena, Knuckles broke the silence, his voice cutting through the cheers and boos.

"Sonic, this is all your fault."

Sonic looked bewildered by the comments coming from his friend. Was it pent up frustration, with Knuckles just needing to vent his frustrations of their home being lost. Or, was Knuckles being serious, with the darkness eating away at his heart.

"What do you mean by that?" Sonic asked, demanding an explanation.

"Don't play dumb with me hedgehog. Mobius was destroyed thanks to your incompetence."

"Oh, don't be like that Knucklehead," Sonic called out. "I didn't know Mobius was going to be invaded and swallowed whole by the Heartless, did I?"

"Bah!" Knuckles remarked with disgrace. "You were the world's protector, you should have been prepared and ready," Knuckles retorted, a dark aura began to shimmer around him slowly.

"Knuckles, blame the Heartless, not me! They're the ones who caused all this mess!"

Knuckles scoffed, his eyes narrowing, "Whatever. I have a job to do, and I won't let anyone stand in my way from me completing my mission."

Sonic's expression hardened, this was becoming serious with Sonic sensing Knuckles was losing himself.

"Something's not right with you, Knuckles. We've been through a lot together. Maybe I can knock some sense into you!"

"Fine by me," Knuckles retorted, raising his spiked glove into a defensive stance. "Once I win this fight and you are defeated, I'll get my shards and restore Mobius, without your help."

"Let's see what you can do, pal!" Sonic taunted, getting into a defensive stance.

Watching the two heroes of Mobius verbally spar from the depths of the Colosseum's walkways. Hades observed the confrontation with sinister glee. He knew Knuckles was going to do what he needed to win and let that pent up anger and frustration consume him. The darkness in Knuckles' heart was seeping into the Echidna's aura, and this was Hades' plan all along.

"Well, well, well," Hades mused, a wicked grin playing on his lips. "Looks like our little drama just got a whole lot juicier. Time to crank up the heat. Let's make this a show to remember!"

But Hades wasn't the only one lurking in the shadows of the Colosseum. From the darkness emerged Maleficent, her presence oozing with cold malice. She, too, was intrigued by the unfolding spectacle.

"Indeed," she purred, her voice dripping with wicked amusement. "Will the darkness within the Echidna swallow him whole, or will the hedgehog prevail?"

Hades turned to face Maleficent, his expression unimpressed by her theatrics.

"Knuckles has got this in the bag," he retorted confidently. "And Sonic? He's your problem, not mine."

Maleficent arched an eyebrow, moving closer to the edge of the walkway to get a better view, her demeanor radiating arrogance.

"Oh?" she countered, a smirk tugging at her lips. "I seem to recall you joining forces with me not so long ago to stop Sonic and his companions?"

Hades let out a chuckle, watching Maleficent stride past him with an air of superiority.

"Sure, it was fun for a while," he conceded, following her with his gaze. "But I've got my own plans to attend to. Can't have a bunch of wannabe villains like Goldman or Blank cramping my style."

Maleficent tilted her head, her gaze fixed on the unfolding drama below.

"Ah, yes. Eliminating the famous Hercules is your objective," she mused, a glint of mischief in her eyes.

Hades nodded, his fiery hair flickering in the dim light of the Colosseum.

"Exactly!"

Maleficent moved closer to Hades, her dark aura sending shivers down his spine. Despite himself, he couldn't help but admire her serious demeanor, even if it did make him feel slightly uneasy.

"Perhaps I can make things... interesting for you," she offered cryptically. "One that will benefit the Echidna and yourself?"

Hades raised an eyebrow, intrigued by her proposition.

"Oh? Do tell."

Back out in the arena, Phil could feel the heat boiling over between the two Mobians. He knew it was time to give the paying people want they wanted.

"Alright, let's get ready to rumble!" he shouted out, turning to Sonic. "Sonic, are you ready?"

"Ready!" Sonic called out.

Phil nodded and then turned to Knuckles, "Knuckles, are you ready?"

Knuckles didn't say a word but he nodded in response, his facial features stern and his gaze locked onto the blue hedgehog.

"Ok then," Phil announced loudly. "BEGIN!"

Sonic v Knuckles

Battle Music: Sonic v Knuckles (North Wind) - Sonic The Fighters

Sonic wasted no time, charging forward with a burst of speed. Knuckles, ever the powerhouse, met Sonic head-on with a powerful punch. With a deft twist, Sonic evaded Knuckles' punch, slipping behind him like a shadow. The Blue Blur launched into a roundhouse kick, aiming for Knuckles' flank, but the red echidna was too quick, ducking and rolling away with the agility of a seasoned fighter.

"Nice try, Sonic," Knuckles taunted, a smirk playing on his lips as he readied himself for the next exchange.

Sonic shot back a grin, his blue eyes sparkling with mischief.

"Hey, give a guy some credit for trying!"

Their dance of combat resumed, the air crackling with anticipation. Each movement was precise, calculated – a testament to their mastery of their craft. Sonic weaved around Knuckles' punches with graceful finesse, while Knuckles anticipated Sonic's every move with unwavering and steely focus.

As Knuckles prepared to unleash his signature "Power Pump Punch," Sonic anticipated the attack, leaping high into the air with the aid of his Spring Pad ability. But Knuckles wasn't one to be outdone. With a powerful leap of his own, he surged upward, aiming to intercept Sonic mid-air with a devastating uppercut.

Yet, Sonic was always one step ahead. With a swift twist, he narrowly avoided Knuckles' blow, somersaulting away just in time to evade the full force of the attack.

With the two returning to the arena floor with effortless grace, Sonic locked eyes with Knuckles, the intensity of their gaze speaking volumes. This was no mere brawl – it was a strategic battle of wits and skill, each move calculated with precision.

"Come on, Knucklehead, you can do better than that!" Sonic called out, his tone laced with playful taunt as he braced himself for the next round.

Knuckles grunted, refusing to be outpaced. Charging forward towards the hedgehog, the echidna unleashed a flurry of punches, which moved so fast, they were like a blur in the air. Sonic's reflexes were pushed to their limits as he ducked, weaved, and dodged, narrowly avoiding each strike. The arena echoed with the sound of Knuckles' powerful blows, the force behind them enough to send shockwaves rippling through the air.

Sonic propelled himself backward with a nimble backflip to gain ground, the anticipation in the Colosseum reached a fever pitch. With a determined gleam in his eye, he revved up for his signature spin dash, unleashing a torrent of speed and power that tore through the air like a cyclone.

But Knuckles was ready. With a steely resolve, he braced himself for Sonic's onslaught, his muscles coiling with strength. As the spinning ball of energy hurtled toward him, Knuckles lunged forward, intercepting the attack with both hands.

The impact was jarring, the force of Sonic's speed pushing against Knuckles' unyielding strength. The arena trembled with the sheer magnitude of their clash as Sonic's spin dash collided with Knuckles' sturdy defense.

Gritting his teeth against the strain, Knuckles fought to hold his ground, the muscles in his arms bulging with effort. Despite his formidable strength, the sheer velocity of Sonic's assault threatened to overpower him, pushing him back with relentless force.

"Knuckles has caught Sonic!" Phil's voice rang out over the uproar of the crowd, his commentary echoing throughout the Colosseum like a clarion call. "But old Blue's speed and power are giving Red a run for his money!"

With Sonic still spinning in Knuckles' opened gloved hands, the Red Echidna could feel he was pushing through the pushing force and was now in control.

"ENOUGH!" Knuckles bellowed, as he took control of the situation.

With swift movement, the echidna was able to push back and with all his might, he flung the blue ball of energy away from him, sending Sonic hurtling across the arena with incredible force. Sonic tumbled through the air, his spin dash dissipating into sparks as he crashed into the ground with a resounding thud.

"Sonic!" Sora called out from the sidelines

Donald and Goofy looked worried for their friend, that was one big throw from Knuckles to send him back tumbling. Shadow didn't say a word, but he could sense Knuckles increasing power and Sonic needed to up his game to deal with this.

The crowd held its breath also, stunned into silence by the sheer magnitude of Knuckles' feat. For a moment, all was still, the tension in the air palpable as they waited to see what would happen next.

But Sonic was not one to stay down for long. With a grunt of effort, he pushed himself to his feet, his eyes blazing with determination.

"Come on, Sonic!" Sora's voice rang out, filled with unwavering support.

"Yeah, why not try some magic?" Donald chimed in, his feathers ruffling with excitement. "You've got those elemental rings, remember?"

Sonic's eyes lit up with realization as he turned to his friends, a mischievous smirk playing on his lips. Their suggestion was just what he needed to turn the tide of battle.

"Great idea, guys," Sonic replied, his voice brimming with confidence. "Time to kick it up a notch!"

With a swift motion, Sonic reached into the depths of his azure quills and retrieved the Thunder Ring, its surface crackling with raw elemental power. As he grasped it tightly in his hand, he could feel the energy coursing through his veins, electrifying his very being with its potent force.

"What is this?" Knuckles demanded, placing up his fists readying himself for the upcoming attack.

"Oh you'll see, Knucklehead, brace yourself!" Sonic's voice echoed through the arena, charged with determination and anticipation.

With the power of thunder coursing through his veins, Sonic surged into action once more. He revved up for another spin dash, the air crackling with electricity as he gathered the storm's energy around him. As Sonic charged forward, his body enveloped in a swirling vortex of lightning, Knuckles could sense the imminent danger.

Reacting with lightning reflexes, Knuckles braced himself to intercept Sonic's thunderous assault, his muscles tensed and ready for the impact. But before he could even blink, Sonic unleashed his electrifying spin dash with unprecedented force, propelling forward like a force of nature.

The collision was like a thunderclap, the sheer velocity of Sonic's attack slamming into Knuckles with bone-rattling force. The red echidna was sent hurtling backward, his form engulfed in a whirlwind of sparks and energy as he crashed into the nearby stone wall with a resounding thud.

"Holy Zeus!" Phil's voice echoed through the arena, his astonishment palpable in the air. "What a move from Sonic. Sparks are flying here, that's for sure."

The crowd erupted into a cacophony of cheers and gasps, their eyes wide with awe as they bore witness to the electrifying spectacle unfolding before them. Sonic's thunderous assault had left them spellbound, the sheer intensity of the battle sending shockwaves reverberating through the Colosseum.

From the sidelines, Sora, Donald, and Goofy watched with bated breath, their expressions a mix of excitement and amazement.

"What a hit!" Donald exclaimed, his voice ringing out above the roar of the crowd.

"Sure was one hard hit," Goofy chimed in, nodding in agreement.

"Did you guys feel that power?" Sora asked, his eyes shining with admiration. "That was some serious energy!"

Shadow, standing silently with his arms folded, observed the scene with a stoic demeanor. Though he remained outwardly impassive, inwardly, he couldn't deny the impressive display of strength and skill that Sonic had just unleashed. Despite his aloof nature, even Shadow couldn't help but be impressed by the sheer magnitude of Sonic's power.

Back on his feet and the thunder sparks dissipating around his body, Sonic looked to the giant crater now in the stone wall of the Colosseum, with dust and debris floating around due to the impact. But with it settling slowly, Knuckles slowly picked himself up from the rubble and staggered forward. He was beat up from the hit, but he was not broken. The ferocity of Sonic's attack was indeed powerful, but Knuckles was an Echidna warrior, he knew he could keep going.

As an Echidna warrior, he knew the meaning of resilience and determination. Though battered and bruised, he refused to yield, his indomitable spirit driving him forward despite the odds stacked against him.

"Knuckles is back up and wants to keep going it seems," Phil's voice called out around the Colosseum. "But I'm not impressed with the damaged to my wall. I will be sending old Red the bill when this tournament is over."

As Knuckles returned to the center of the arena, his gloves raised in readiness, Sonic couldn't help but feel a twinge of concern. The red echidna had taken a devastating blow, and it was evident in the way he struggled to remain standing.

"Come on, Knucks," Sonic urged, his voice laced with genuine concern. "That was one heck of a hit. Are you sure you're up for this?"

But Knuckles' resolve was unyielding. Despite the pain coursing through his body, he refused to back down.

"No, Sonic! We keep going," Knuckles replied, his voice tinged with determination. "I can't afford to fail."

With every ounce of strength he possessed, Knuckles pushed past the pain, drawing upon the depths of his inner reserves. A dark aura began to swirl around him, crackling with raw energy like a tempestuous storm. The air itself seemed to pulse with tension as Knuckles tapped into the very essence of his being, his determination shining like a beacon amidst the encroaching darkness.

Sonic watched in awe as Knuckles embraced the darkness within him, channeling its power with a fierce determination that bordered on reckless abandon. Despite the risks, Knuckles knew that this was his only chance to turn the tide of battle in his favor, and he was willing to do whatever it took to emerge victorious.

"Don't let the darkness consume you, Knuckles!" Sonic remarked, his voice filled with concern. He had seen the dangers of succumbing to the darkness firsthand, and he couldn't bear to see his friend fall victim to its seductive allure.

But Knuckles, his eyes ablaze with determination, paid no heed to Sonic's warning. He knew the risks of tapping into the darkness within him, but he also knew that this was his only chance to stand against Sonic's formidable power.

As the darkness began to flow through the echidna, the group watching from the sidelines couldn't help but feel a sense of concern wash over them.

"The darkness!" Sora exclaimed, his voice tinged with surprise and apprehension. Memories of his own struggles with the darkness flooded his mind, and he knew all too well the dangers that it posed.

"It's beginning to consume Knuckles," Shadow remarked, his crimson eyes narrowed in focused observation. Despite his usual aloof demeanor, even he couldn't deny the growing power emanating from Knuckles as he tapped into the depths of his inner darkness. "Sonic needs to finish this fight quickly."

Donald and Goofy exchanged worried glances, their concern for their friend evident in their expressions. They had seen firsthand the destructive power of the darkness, and they feared for Knuckles' safety.

"We have to do something!" Donald exclaimed, his feathers ruffling with agitation.

"No," Shadow replied bluntly, his attention still fixed on the arena.

Sora looked taken aback by Shadow's blunt response, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion. Donald, equally surprised, let out a loud quack of astonishment, his feathers ruffling with agitation.

"What do you mean no?" Goofy asked, his confusion evident in his tone.

Shadow remained steadfast, his gaze never wavering from the intense battle unfolding before them.

"Sonic needs to be the one to end this and knock sense into Knuckles," he explained, his voice unwavering. "We will have to wait and see how it plays out."

Despite their concerns, Sora, Donald, and Goofy knew better than to question Shadow's judgment. They understood that he had a deeper understanding of the situation, and they trusted that he had Knuckles' best interests at heart. With a heavy sigh, they turned their attention back to the arena, their hearts heavy with worry but filled with hope that Sonic would emerge victorious and bring their friend back from the brink of darkness.

"Ok then," Sonic declared looking to Knuckles with a look of sympathy but a sense of fortitude. "Let's settle this."

With a burst of speed with Sonic's Light Speed Shoes, he dashed forward in a blue blur. Knuckles gritted his teeth once more and prepared to fight once more. His spirit was admirable but the darkness seemed to aid Knuckles further.

"So, this plan of yours," Hades remarked, his mind whirling as he tried to piece together Maleficent's strategy. He turned to the sorceress, who remained fixated on the unfolding semi-final match between Sonic and Knuckles. "How does this help, moi, exactly?"

"Simple, really," Maleficent replied, her eyes never leaving the action in the arena. "The blue hedgehog's friend will turn his attention away from this fight and go after her."

"You're saying Sonic will dash off to save the day, but forfeit the match?" Hades inquired, his skepticism evident in his tone.

Maleficent turned her head to give Hades a wicked smile, the malevolence in her expression sending a shiver down his spine.

"Yes," she confirmed, her voice dripping with malice. "Sonic's brash nature will lead him off to the abyss to save his friend, while Knuckles will be declared the winner."

"And I will be one step closer to finishing off that brat, Hercules!" Hades exclaimed, the realization dawning on him as he began to see the brilliance of Maleficent's plan.

"Indeed," Maleficent continued, her attention still fixed on the arena. "However, I sense your companion might not make it without our intervention."

Confusion flickered across Hades' face as he moved closer to get a better view of the ongoing battle, joining Maleficent at her side. His gaze locked onto the action just in time to witness Sonic unleash a brutal homing attack on Knuckles, who struggled to fend him off against the onslaught of speed.

"Jeez, maybe I backed the wrong horse, huh?" Hades muttered sheepishly, realizing the tide of the battle was turning against Knuckles.

Maleficent turned her head to look at the worried Hades, her gaze piercing through him like a dagger.

"When the time is right, we can set our plan into motion," she remarked, her voice laced with a dangerous edge.

With a sinking feeling in his gut, Hades realized that Maleficent's scheme was more intricate and cunning than he had initially thought.

As Sonic landed back onto the stone arena floor, the crowd erupted into cheers, their voices echoing through the Colosseum as they rallied behind their hero. Victory seemed within reach, but Sonic couldn't shake the feeling of unease that settled in the pit of his stomach.

Knuckles stood opposite him, still defiant despite the wavering in his stance. The darkness that had once empowered him now seemed to struggle against the echidna's fierce will.

"Last chance to step down, Knuckles," Sonic called out, his voice ringing clear above the roar of the crowd. "The darkness doesn't seem to be working out for you there."

"SHUT UP!" Knuckles snapped back, his voice tinged with frustration. "I can't lose!"

Sonic sighed, a mixture of concern and disappointment etched on his features as he looked upon his friend.

"The darkness is not your ally, pal," Sonic pleaded, his tone tinged with sorrow. "Your stubbornness is blinding you."

But Knuckles was beyond reasoning, his anger fueling his determination as he snarled in defiance.

"We end this now!" Knuckles declared, his eyes flashing with a dangerous intensity, their once vibrant purple hue now tainted with a sickly shade of yellow.

Sonic's heart sank as he watched Knuckles succumb further to the darkness, the echidna's once noble spirit now overshadowed by its corrupting influence. Turning to his friends on the sidelines, Sonic's expression spoke volumes, conveying the gravity of the situation with a single glance.

Sora, Donald, and Goofy looked on with concern, their hearts heavy with worry for their friend. Shadow, ever stoic and composed, unfolded his arms and met Sonic's gaze with a somber expression.

"You'll have to finish it now, or Knuckles will be lost," Shadow remarked, his voice tinged with genuine concern.

Sonic nodded to Shadow's words and turned to face Knuckles once more. But in a split second, Knuckles had already pounced and in a blur of red as he delivered a devastating blow straight to Sonic's gut. The impact was so powerful that Sonic felt the air rush out of his lungs, his vision swimming as pain exploded through his body.

"SONIC!" Sora's cry of concern echoed through the arena, the worry evident in his voice as he watched his friend take the hit.

"What a punch!" Donald quacked loudly, his feathers ruffled with concern for Sonic's well-being.

Goofy looked on with worry etched across his features, his heart sinking at the sight of Sonic being struck with such force. He knew firsthand the full extent of Knuckles' strength and the damage it could inflict.

Even Shadow, ever brooding and composed, winced at the impact, feeling the reverberations of the hit deep within his own being.

The crowd gasped in shock at the sudden turn of events, stunned by the sheer speed and ferocity of Knuckles' attack. Even Phil, the seasoned announcer, was taken aback by the unexpected turn of events.

"Oh, what a gut-wrenching shot by Knuckles!" Phil's voice rang out over the tumult of the crowd, his disbelief evident in his tone.

As Sonic stumbled back from the force of the blow, he tried to shake off the pain and focus on regrouping. But before he could even catch his breath, he realized that Knuckles was already on the move again.

"SONIC, HE'S GONE UNDERGROUND!" Goofy's voice called out, his words a desperate plea for his friend to be on guard.

But it was too late. With a sudden burst of speed, Knuckles drilled upwards from beneath the ground, catching Sonic off guard and sending him soaring into the air like a ragdoll. With Sonic being Airborne, Knuckles jumped up from the hole and charged up his fist with the darkness now enveloping his heart, his spiked fist became a bullet of darkness, aiming for the what seemed helpless hedgehog.

"Sonic, watch out!" Sora shouted, trying to rally his comrade.

With Knuckles closing in rapidly, it seemed inevitable that his punch would connect with Sonic. However, in a split second, Sonic vanished into thin air, leaving Knuckles' dark punch to miss its mark.

"What?!" the Echidna exclaimed in bewilderment, his fist striking nothing but air.

Down on the ground, everyone was in shock at Sonic's sudden disappearance. However, Shadow could sense that there was more to this than met the eye.

"Where did Sonic go?" Donald asked, turning to Sora, Goofy, and Shadow for answers.

Shadow huffed softly, a small smirk playing at the corner of his lips. Sensing his confidence, Goofy looked to the hedgehog, perplexed.

"Shadow? Do you know where Sonic went?" Goofy inquired.

"I sense that he will explain in a minute," Shadow replied cryptically, his crimson eyes glinting with amusement.

"What do you mean?" Donald pressed for an answer, but before Shadow could reply, Sonic's voice could be heard from right in front of them.

"Man, I'm glad I held onto a Chaos Emerald!" Sonic declared, his cheeky smile lighting up his features as he stood confidently in the arena, holding the Blue Chaos Emerald in his hand.

"Sonic!" Sora exclaimed, relief flooding through him at the sight of his friend safe and sound.

"How did you do that?" Donald asked, his curiosity piqued.

"Chaos Control, of course!" Sonic revealed, showing off the shimmering blue emerald they had collected not long ago.

"Wait, you can use Chaos Control too?" Goofy inquired, his eyes widening in surprise at Sonic's newfound ability.

"Sure can," Sonic replied. "Some Mobians can tap into it.

The blue blur turned to Shadow.

"However, I haven't used it in years. Others, like Shadow, can use it more freely than others."

"Got that right," Shadow admitted with a small grin. "Good idea on using Chaos Control. But, you need to focus on stopping Knuckles."

"Right," Sonic replied with a nod.

Knuckles landed back down after safely gliding down from the skies. His yellow eyes turned to Sonic and he pointed his spiked glove to the hedgehog.

"Neat trick," Knuckles acknowledged, his tone cautious. "But this isn't over yet."

Sonic's grin only widened in response as he tucked away the Chaos Emerald into his quills, his movements deliberate and calculated.

"I agree," Sonic replied, his voice tinged with anticipation. "But I have something extra special for you, pal. Courtesy of the Moogle Shop!"

"Did Sonic say Moogle shop?" Sora asked, turning to his friends with a quizzical expression.

"Oh, he must have picked up a new piece of equipment during that hour break," Goofy speculated, scratching his head in confusion.

Reaching back into his quills, Sonic retrieved another ring, but this one seemed different somehow. As Sonic pressed down on it, a sudden chill filled the air, causing Goofy to shiver involuntarily.

"Say fellas, did the temperature just drop?" Goofy asked, his teeth chattering as he looked around in confusion.

"But the sun's out?" Donald added, casting a perplexed glance upwards at the clear blue skies above.

Sora turned to Shadow, seeking answers, but even the enigmatic hedgehog seemed at a loss.

A chill swept through the arena, causing the spectators to huddle closer together for warmth. Sonic's emerald green eyes took on a glacial hue as the air around him crackled with frost.

The elements of ice were now at his disposal, and with this newfound power, Sonic prepared to unleash a flurry of freezing attacks that could tip the balance of the battle in his favor.

"I hope you folks brought a sweater or something," Phil quipped with a grin as he called out the match to the audience, "because things are about to get icy in here!"

"Geez, who turned on the AC?" Hades quipped, pretending to be cold.

Maleficent didn't feel the cold either, but her gaze was fixated on Sonic's ring and his use of the arts.

"I see the hedgehog can use elemental rings to his advantage. Interesting."

"Yeah, that guy is full of surprises it seems. First that teleporting technique and now this, what can't he do?" Hades pondered.

"Chaos Control is a powerful ability," Maleficent interjected, her voice carrying a note of respect. Her gaze turned to Shadow, her eyes piercing through the darkness of the gateway. "I have only known one creature to pull off this move efficiently."

"That brooding hedgehog, right?" Hades questioned with a smirk. "The reigning Phil Cup Champ."

"Shadow, The Ultimate Lifeform, is an intriguing creation crafted by the brilliant mind of Doctor Gerald Robotnik," Maleficent explained, her tone carrying a hint of reverence. "He was designed not only as a powerful entity but also to aid in the recovery of his granddaughter's illness."

"Wow, cool story," Hades remarked, attempting to steer the conversation back to their impending plan. "So, when are we going to invoke this plan of ours to lure Sonic away?"

"Soon, patience Hades, patience," Maleficent replied cryptically, her eyes gleaming with anticipation as she watched the battle unfold below.

With the power of the Ice Ring at Sonic's disposal, the blue blur wasted no time in putting it to use. As he dashed forward with his trademark speed, a swirling vortex of ice and snow enveloped him, creating a miniature snowstorm in his wake. With each step, the frosty winds whipped around him, adding an extra edge to his already formidable speed.

Launching himself into the air with a powerful leap, Sonic unleashed a frosty-looking homing attack aimed directly at Knuckles, who had his guard up in anticipation of the assault. The icy blast struck true, engulfing Knuckles in a whirlwind of cold energy as the force of the attack sent him hurtling backwards.

"Wow, that was a direct hit!" Sora exclaimed in amazement, feeling goosebumps rise on his arms from both the intensity of the battle and the chilling effect of Sonic's attack.

"Gawrsh, I'll need my thermal long johns at this rate," Goofy quipped, shivering slightly as he felt the cold permeating the arena. "I wonder if that Moogle sells 'em."

Knuckles, initially taken aback by Sonic's elemental display, shook off the frost that clung to him. However, the ominous glow of darkness began to intensify around Knuckles' fists once more. With a determined snarl, the Echidna charged forward once more, his attacks fueled by the growing power of darkness. Yet, despite his best efforts, each punch missed its mark as Sonic deftly dodged and weaved through the onslaught.

Sonic's speed, combined with the icy terrain created by the power of the ring, made things increasingly difficult for the Guardian of the Master Emerald. Every dodge left trails of slick ice on the arena floor, causing Knuckles to slip and slide, throwing him off balance.

"Looks like Knuckles is going ice skating, folks!" Phil chuckled, the crowd erupting into laughter at the sight of the usually formidable echidna struggling to maintain his footing.

Seizing the opportunity, Sonic began to run at full speed around the unbalance echidna, going around in a circle. All what could be seen was a blue blur circling the stumbling Echidna, who was looking to try and spot Sonic's movements.

"Sonic is picking up speed," Donald remarked.

"Good," Shadow replied. "Time to end this. I just wonder what he had planned."

As Sonic sped around at a faster velocity, the swirls of ice and snow became what seemed to be a ice blue vortex of some kind. The power of the ice ring and with Sonic clocking up incredible speeds, the sheer force lifted Knuckles off the ground and into the air. The chill of the move was frosting over Knuckles, who was being battered by ice debris and snow.

"Check it out!" Sora remarked in wonder from the sidelines. "It looks like Sonic has created a hurricane of some kind."

"That's creative!" Donald agreed, watching this blue hurricane take shape.

The hurricane of cold elements continued to batter Knuckles relentlessly as he struggled to break free. However, the sheer force of Sonic's speed, which was now clocking up incredible miles per hour, proved to be overwhelming. The Echidna found himself bouncing around helplessly inside the eye of the icy tempest, tossed about like a ragdoll with no means of escape. Despite his best efforts to regain control, Knuckles was at the mercy of Sonic's formidable attack, his movements restricted by the powerful currents of the icy vortex.

"Let's hope this ends this battle," Shadow thought to himself, feeling the chilling air hit him from the devastating attack infront of him.

"Anytime now on your plan," Hades urged, his patience wearing thin as he watched the relentless onslaught unfold.

Maleficent, seemed to ignore Hades' words and continued to watch Sonic's ice ring infused hurricane swirl with icy chaos. Knuckles was being pushed pillar to post and smacking into icicles created in the move.

"Maleficent!" Hades demanded, the frustration evident in his tone as he watched Knuckles being tossed around like a plaything in Sonic's icy hurricane.

The Mistress of Evil remained composed, her attention fixed on the unfolding chaos below. Hades's impatience was palpable, but Maleficent knew that timing was key.

"Very well," Maleficent replied, her voice laced with arrogance as she raised her free hand, the eerie greenish glow enveloping her palm. With a focused gaze, she directed her dark energy toward the arena where Sonic and Knuckles battled.

The continuing move roared through the arena, battering Knuckles relentlessly. The crowd, caught in a frenzy of cheers and gasps, watched in awe as Sonic pushed the limits of his speed and elemental prowess. Knuckles, defiant amidst the chaos, struggled against the violent currents, determined not to yield.

Sonic, with determination etched across his face, continued to rev up, intensifying the elemental storm. Knuckles, thrown around like a leaf in a hurricane, gritted his teeth, refusing to succumb. The arena shook with the ferocity of the clash, each gust of wind echoing the clash of wills between Sonic and Knuckles.

As Sonic prepared to deliver the final surge, a cry pierced through the maelstrom.

"SONIC!"

The voice, carried by the icy wind, reached Sonic's keen ears. He recognized that voice – Amy. His friend who had gone missing alongside Alice, back in Wonderland.

"Amy?!" Sonic remarked in bewilderment, trying to trace her voice as he slowly deaccelerated his speed.

Sonic screeched to a sudden halt, his momentum abruptly halted as if by an invisible force. The power of the ice dissipated around him, leaving his ice blue eyes to return to their usual green hue. The once raging winds created by Sonic's speed calmed to a gentle breeze, the icy tempest vanishing as quickly as it had appeared.

Caught off guard by the sudden change, Knuckles plummeted to the ground with a resounding thud, the impact echoing throughout the Colosseum. The crowd, initially caught up in the spectacle of Sonic's powerful display, fell into a puzzled silence as they watched the events unfold before them.

"I'm not sure," Donald replied with a perplexed shrug, his feathers ruffled with uncertainty as he watched the unfolding events in the arena.

Goofy scratched his head in puzzlement, his eyes fixed on Sonic's sudden halt.

Shadow, ever vigilant, sensed that something was amiss. His crimson eyes darted around the Colosseum, searching for any sign of what could have caused Sonic to come to a stop

"What's Sonic doing? He had the match in the bag! Finish it!" Phil announced with annoyance evident in his voice, his commentary reflecting the confusion and frustration of the crowd.

The spectators murmured amongst themselves, exchanging puzzled glances as they tried to make sense of Sonic's sudden hesitation. They had expected the battle to reach its climax with Sonic's victory seemingly assured, but now they were left questioning what had caused the unexpected pause in the action.

Suddenly, a dark and eerie portal gradually unfurled like an ominous tear in reality, appearing nearby one of the Colosseum's gateways. This swirling portal of darkness created an unsettling contrast to the vibrant colors of the Colosseum. Wisps of shadowy tendrils emanated from the portal, reaching out like fingers of the abyss, as if seeking to ensnare anything within their grasp.

"What is that portal?" Sora remarked, his voice tinged with unease as he tried to get a better look at it from the sidelines.

The young man's gaze fixated on the emerging portal, its edges flickering with an eerie radiance. The air around it seemed to distort, creating an otherworldly ambiance that sent shivers down the spines of those who dared to look. Suddenly, the call for help echoed once more.

Sonic peered into the depths of the portal, his senses on high alert as he strained to discern what lay within the darkness.

"Please, someone help. Sonic, save me!" The voice cried out from inside the portal, its desperation echoing through the Colosseum.

"Hey, is that Amy?" Sora exclaimed, the urgency evident in his voice as he recognized the voice coming from within the portal.

Shadow nodded, his crimson eyes narrowing as he focused on the swirling darkness, adding an air of tension to the already eerie atmosphere.

"Sorry about this, folks," Phil announced, his voice projecting over the hushed murmurs of the crowd. "A technical issue, but we'll be back up and running shortly."

The corridor of darkness beckoned like a foreboding abyss, and Sonic, torn between the unfinished battle with Knuckles and the haunting cries of his missing friend, hesitated. He glanced at Sora, Shadow, Donald, and Goofy, the conflict evident in his expression.

"Guys, I need to rescue Amy," Sonic declared with determination, his resolve firm as he acknowledged the gravity of the situation.

"Sonic, we can help. You don't have to go alone," Sora insisted, his voice filled with sincerity and determination to aid his friend.

Sonic paused, considering Sora's offer, before shaking his head.

"I appreciate it, Sora, but this is something I've got to do. You guys finish the tournament. I'll be back," he stated firmly, his decision made.

Before anyone could protest, Sonic, fueled by his sense of duty, dashed towards the dark portal. Knuckles, left in the center of the arena battered and bruised, watched as Sonic's resolve overpowered the chaos of the tournament. Sonic leaped into the dark abyss, leaving his friends and the Phil Cup behind.

"Sonic, wait!" Sora pleaded, but Sonic, driven by the urgency of Amy's cries, vanished into the shadows. His disappearance left Sora, Donald, and Goofy bewildered, their hearts heavy with worry.

Shadow, witnessing Sonic's departure, clenched his fists in frustration, his expression darkening with determination.

"Damn it," he muttered under his breath, his crimson eyes narrowing as he made a decision. Turning to Sora, his tone was firm and commanding. "Stay put. I'll get Sonic and Amy back!"

"But, Shadow..." Sora began, not wanting to see Shadow go into the unknown alone.

"No time for 'buts.' Stay put and finish the tournament. I'll bring Sonic back," Shadow interrupted, his gaze piercing as he conveyed his determination to Sora.

Sora hesitated for a moment, his concern for Sonic and Amy weighing heavily on his mind. But he knew Shadow was right. Sonic needed backup to rescue Amy and navigate whatever dangers lay ahead. With a heavy sigh, Sora nodded in agreement.

"Please be careful," Sora said, his voice filled with worry as he looked to Shadow.

Shadow nodded in acknowledgment of Sora's concern. With a swift dash propelled by his jet shoes, the brooding hedgehog skated into the dark portal just as it closed behind him, leaving the heroes in the bewildering aftermath.

"What the heck just happened?" Donald squawked in disbelief, his feathers ruffled with confusion. "Did that just happen?"

Goofy shrugged, scratching his head in bewilderment.

"Gawrsh, I don't know, but it sure got real complicated all of a sudden."

As the dust settled in the arena, the group could only wait anxiously, their thoughts consumed by the uncertain fate of their friends.

"Where did that portal send them?" Hades inquired with a hint of intrigue, his curiosity piqued by the sudden turn of events.

Maleficent, her task completed, turned from the entranceway and began to walk past Hades with a slow, deliberate stride. She exuded an aura of sinister satisfaction as she moved.

"Hey, are you going to answer me?" Hades persisted, his tone demanding answers.

Stopping in her tracks, Maleficent turned slightly to face Hades, her grin as wicked as ever.

"The depths of darkness, where even Chaos Control can't aid their escape," she replied cryptically, her words laden with ominous certainty.

Hades found himself momentarily speechless, a rare occurrence for the lord of the underworld. He watched in silence as Maleficent strode off into the shadows of the Colosseum, leaving behind an air of mystery and foreboding.

"Wow, that's a bit cynical, even for me," Hades muttered to himself, his thoughts swirling with uncertainty and intrigue.

With Sonic and Shadow's sudden departure leaving the Colosseum in a state of bewilderment, Phil was visibly annoyed, and the crowd echoed his sentiment. The once-confused spectators now rang out boos, disappointed by the unexpected exit of their hero.

Phil stomped forward, glaring at the spot where Sonic had vanished into the dark portal. The frustration of the trainer of heroes was evident as he grumbled in annoyance at the situation.

"Well, ain't this just great. Sonic goes on vacation to an unknown destination, and I have to name Knuckles the winner by default. Now he'll face either Sora or Cloud in the finals. Let's hope they stick around!"

Knuckles, battered and bruised from his confrontation with Sonic, rose to his feet amidst the disgruntled murmurs of the crowd. With a determined scowl, he made his way to the shadows of the gateways, the boos of the disappointed audience echoing in the Colosseum.

"The crowd isn't happy," Donald observed, taking note of the annoyed and angry spectators.

"Wouldn't you be if your favorite got up and left?" Goofy responded, casting a sympathetic glance towards the disgruntled crowd.

"Good point," Donald conceded.

Phil, now strutting forward to Sora, carried the irritation of Sonic's unexpected departure. The enthusiastic trainer and announcer stood in front of the Keyblade wielder, ready to address him.

"You're up next, kid," Phil spoke with annoyance in his tone. "Don't go running off like Sonic did. We've got a tournament to finish!"

Sora nodded in acknowledgment, finding himself without the support of Sonic and the knowledge of Shadow at ringside. Donald and Goofy stepped forward, offering words of encouragement and advice.

"You can do it, Sora! We're here to help, no matter what!" Goofy spoke with a big grin on his face, radiating positivity and support to his friend.

"Yeah," Donald chimed in. "We've got your back."

Sora, appreciative of his friends' support, smiled.

"Thanks, guys. I'll give it my all," he replied, knowing he had two great friends ready to support him.

As the Colosseum prepared for the next match, Sora faced the challenge ahead with determination and the unwavering support of his loyal friends.

Gateway Shadows

From the shadows of the gateways, Knuckles stumbled in, his movements strained and weary. Hades, observing the unexpected turn of events, couldn't help but revel in the chaos he had sown.

"Well, well, Knuckles. Looks like Sonic took a shortcut out of here. An unexpected twist, wouldn't you say?" Hades commented, his voice dripping with smug satisfaction.

Knuckles, his guard still up but weakened from his encounter with Sonic, glared at Hades with a stern look.

"You did this, didn't you?" Knuckles accused, suspicion evident in his eyes.

"Me? Oh, come on, Knucklehead," Hades replied, attempting to deflect the accusation. "I'm just here to enjoy the show."

"This was not part of the deal, Hades!" Knuckles scoffed, frustration lacing his tone.

"Well, no, but you're getting closer to your shards, aren't you?" Hades retorted, a sly grin tugging at his lips.

Knuckles shook his head in resignation, realizing he had been played.

"You and Strife can deal with Hercules. I'm out!"

"Out?" Hades exclaimed in bewilderment and annoyance. "What do you mean, out!?"

Ignoring Hades, Knuckles walked off into the shadows to recover from the intense battle, leaving Hades to stew in his frustration.

"This Knucklehead is getting on my nerves. Maybe it's time to spice things up a bit," Hades thought, his mind already concocting new schemes. "Let's hope Cloud's heart is still in this. But perhaps I need to move on to Plan C?"

With a wicked gleam in his eyes, Hades vanished into the shadows, leaving the Colosseum to simmer with anticipation and uncertainty. The stage was set for the next phase of Hades' malevolent machinations.

Through the Portal

As Sonic and Shadow emerged on the other side of the dark portal, they found themselves in a realm unlike any they had seen before. The portal sealed shut behind them, leaving the duo in an expanse of pure darkness.

"Guess that's our ride back home gone," Sonic said with a sigh. "No chance we can call a cab from here?"

Shadow shook his head and huffed at the closed gateway.

"Great. Stuck in the dark with you. Just what I needed," Shadow muttered, his crimson eyes scanning the featureless void.

"Hey, you didn't have to follow me in?" Sonic questioned, looking to Shadow with a confused demeanor.

"We need to find Amy, Sonic," Shadow retorted. "We have to do what's right, after all."

"Look at you, all being caring," Sonic teased. "I need to document this."

Shadow shook his head at the comment and sighed. This was no time for humour.

"So, where the heck is here anyways?" Sonic asked, looking around at this creepy looking place.

The realm they found themselves in was a desolate expanse of eternal darkness, with only the faintest glimmers of light to guide their way forward. The rocks jutted out like the teeth of some primordial beast, their surfaces marred by the cracks from which the eerie blue glow emanated.

"This darkness... it's like nothing I've ever encountered before," Shadow remarked, his voice tinged with a sense of unease as he surveyed their surroundings.

Sonic nodded in agreement, his eyes scanning the endless expanse of blackness stretching out before them. Despite the oppressive atmosphere, his determination remained unwavering.

"Let's keep moving," Sonic urged, his voice filled with resolve. "We can't let this darkness hold us back."

With a shared nod, Sonic and Shadow pressed forward along the winding pathway, their steps echoing softly against the rocky ground. Each stride brought them closer to their goal, their determination driving them ever onward.

As they ventured deeper into the heart of the darkness, the distant cries of their friend served as a beacon of hope, spurring them onward in their quest to rescue Amy from the clutches of the unknown.
