Chapter 32: Return from The Depths
With Hollow Bastion beginning to swarm with the Heartless thanks to Ansem's manipulation and the Giant Keyhole unable to be sealed, due to Sora's sacrifice to save Kairi - time was not on the hero's side when making their escape from the depths of the castle. Silver had stayed behind in the Grand Hall to keep the larger Heartless groups from entering to give the heroes time to flee.
Sonic, Donald, Goofy, Knuckles, and Kairi raced through the labyrinth of the corridors to get the young Princess of Heart to safety. Sonic took the lead and spin dashed his way through hordes of Shadow Heartless who got in their way. Donald used his magic to light up and freeze the creatures of darkness, with Goofy shield bashing as he charged forward. Knuckles too swung his powerful fists towards the Heartless threats, each connection bursting the Shadow Heartless into nothingness. Kairi was grateful for these new protectors aiding her, but she could feel Sora's soul, his heart, lingering around her; she knew he was not fully gone.
Unbeknownst to the five, a curious Shadow Heartless unlike any other had been following them as they made their escape through the castle's rooms and corridors. The Shadow Heartless watched and followed sneakily behind, keeping its distance. This beast was not like its darker counterparts and did not seek to harm or have a feeling of lashing out. It ran with purpose as if it knew Sonic and his friends. From the distance, the little Shadow followed and its yellow eyes fixated on the group.
As the heroes managed to get through the Grand Library and hallways, they reached back to the entrance hall to the castle, where earlier Sora stood up to Riku and the Keyblade returned to his possession. Unfortunately, with Sora unlocking his heart to free Kairi, our spiky-haired hero made the ultimate sacrifice, which still played on the mind of Sonic.
"Why did he have to do that," Sonic thought to himself, rushing down the staircase of the entrance, with the sound of the water feature echoing around. "We could have worked it out to rescue Kairi's heart!"
Sonic's green eyes were fixated on the large entrance door, which would take them back to the reversing waterfalls and the Gummi Ship parked nearby. However, as the blue blur, Knuckles, Donald, and Goofy got near the door, they turned to see Kairi standing in the center of the room, she could feel something and placed her hand on her necklace again, as if it was giving her courage and protection.
"Kairi, we can't stay here," Donald shouted out.
"Donald's right," Sonic added. "If we hang around too long, we will be overwhelmed. There is only so much we can fight back against these numbers."
"I know, but I still feel Sora," Kairi replied, her eyes looking around this grand entrance room. "It's as if he is calling out to me from the depths of this place."
"But he's gone," Goofy said sadly. "We have to get to safety."
Knuckles with his purple eyes looked around and suddenly he felt something also, as if his Echinda warrior and guardian instincts kicked in. His eyes widened and a warmth seemed to overtake him. Sonic turned to see Knuckles looking perplexed, he knew something was amiss.
"Knucks, what's up?" Sonic asked. "Are more Heartless on the way?"
Knuckle gave a deep breath through his nose, lowered his head, and closed his eyes. The red echidna and guardian of The Master Emerald seemed to have gone into a meditative state, his unique abilities allowed him to sense danger.
"I feel Kairi might be right," Knuckles said calmly, even in the height of this turmoil.
"Really?" Kairi asked in disbelief.
Knuckles gave another exhale through his nose and his senses were trying to detect Sora's presence within the darkness.
"I feel Sora's spiritual side is close, but his physical essence is gone," Knuckles revealed, trying to keep concentrated on the task at hand.
"So much for 'he's gone'," Sonic said with a slight taunt, remembering Knuckles' comments from earlier.
"Well, things change," Knuckles responded, raising his head and looking at the blue blur with annoyance. "The kid is out there, but it's as if his body is surrounded by darkness."
"Darkness?" Donald asked curiously.
"Lost like Riku?" Goofy added.
"I don't know", Knuckles explained with a huff. "This feels a bit different to what I know and am used to on this wacky adventure."
"Sounds like it," Sonic replied with a sigh. "Everything seems to be straightforward, then another spanner in the works. This is indeed a confusing universe."
"I think we still need to leave and get Kairi to safety," Knuckles declared, turning to face the door in front of them. "We can regroup, strategize, and come back with clearer heads to rescue Sora."
"Good plan," Sonic said in agreement, giving a nod. The blue blur turned to Donald and Goofy, who were close to him. "You guys in agreement?"
"Yes," Donald nodded.
Goofy gave a stern look and nodded also, he knew it was too dangerous to be in this castle for too long.
Sonic nodded and then turned to Kairi, his green eyes looking to the Princess of Heart, who was still looking around the amazingly spacious and stylish entrance, her eyes piercing through the shadows of the room to seek Sora.
"Kairi, come on," Sonic said. "We'll take you back to Traverse Town and keep you safe there."
Kairi wanted to stay and search, but she knew her new friend was right. The girl with red hair nodded slowly and again touched her necklace, holding it tightly and she began to walk forward. However, before she could reach the others from the center of the room, a lone Shadow Heartless materialized close to her. The creature twitched in its movement, but it seemed this one stood up much straighter and wasn't slouched.
"Watch out Kairi!" Goofy cried out, ready to rush to her aid.
Sonic, Donald, and Goofy made their way to Kairi to get her to safety, but Knuckles hesitated and could sense something. His purple eyes looked at the creature and he could feel a strange energy coming from it. Donald however, decided to try and scare off the lone Shadow.
"Confounded Heartless," Donald shouted. "Leave us alone would ya."
The duck mage used his staff to smack the Hearless on the head, which assembled more of a comical effect to scare off the Heartless.
"Move it creep," Sonic declared, moving his hands into his quills. "Or you'll end up with a ball of thunder coming your way."
However, the Heartless seemed unfazed and its yellow eyes were fixated on Kairi, like a puppy looking at its master. Kairi's blue eyes looked towards the small creature, her heart could sense something about this Heartless.
"That's odd," Goofy said. "Doesn't seem that Heartless wants to fight."
"What do ya mean?" Donald replied with annoyance. "It could be fooling us."
Knuckles moved forward to the group and began to explain what he could feel from his senses.
"I feel a strange energy within this Heartless," Knuckles explained.
"What do you mean?" Sonic asked, turning to see his friend moving towards the group.
"I sense, light overwhelming the darkness," Knuckles added, sharing what he felt.
"And?" Donald replied, still ticked off that Heartless wasn't leaving them alone.
"It does not seek violence or hearts," Knuckles revealed. "It seeks a friend."
"A friend?" Sonic questioned. "Dude, it's Heartless."
Ignoring Sonic's comments, Kairi looked deeper at the twitching Heartless in front of her, she knelt to its level and looked into its yellow eyes. Suddenly, when the eyes met, she could feel the presence she was searching for. It was all in the connection of the eyes, the windows to the soul and heart.
"Sora…" Kairi remarked in disbelief, looking deeply at the Shadow Heartless at her eye level.
"What?!" Donald shouted out.
"It can't be?" Goofy added, taken back by this.
Sonic's green eyes looked to Heartless, then back to Knuckles, seeking an explanation. Everything he learned on his journey so far seemed to not make sense again. His mind raced back to Aqua in the Realm of Darkness, with her Heartless roaming free, but her husk still looked the same as her.
"This doesn't make any sense to me," Sonic said, shaking his head. "Knucks, is this Heartless Sora?"
Knuckles looked and gave a small nod before explaining, "It seems when Sora used that Keyblade to unlock his heart, he turned himself into a Heartless."
Sonic's adventure had been one of mystery, one with more questions than answers. He had read up on the powers of darkness and how Heartless came to be when a person lost their heart. But, he was expecting something different. When he met Aqua with Shadow, Aqua noted that her Heartless was more like her than a mindless beast. How could Sora turn into a Shadow variant? What made Aqua different from Sora? Sonic's mind raced with questions as he stared at Kairi and the Heartless again.
"Sora…" Kairi said softly, her eyes welling up.
"We need to get Sora's Heartless to Merlin," Donald suggested. "Maybe he can help return him to his normal state?"
"Good idea," Goofy said with approval. "If he's being obedient, I'm sure he will follow us to the ship."
Before Sonic or Knuckles could respond, a horde of Shadow Heartless appeared and surrounded the group, with their eyes locking onto Kairi and the Shadow Sora. These Heartless didn't look too friendly and without warning, they jumped into the air and aimed for the weaker Heartless in their ranks, Sora. Seeing this happen, Kairi quickly positioned herself closely to the Shadow Sora and hugged him tightly, ready to protect him.
"This time, I will protect you," Kairi said bravely.
The horde of Heartless dogpiled onto the two and Sonic, Knuckles, Donald, and Goofy looked on in concern and frustration.
"Kairi!" Sonic shouted out, ready to get the Heartless off the two.
"Quick, they need our help!" Donald shouted out, ready to lend a hand.
"You don't have to tell me twice," Sonic said in hasted, readying himself to lay the smackdown on these Heartless foes.
However, before the four could spring into action, a bright light began to shine through the small pile of dark Heartless, with the brightness piercing through the pile.
"What the?" Knuckles exclaimed, taken back by this.
"What is going on?" Goofy added, peaking past his shield.
The light from beneath the small mountain of Shadow Heartless got brighter and the intensity of the brightness enveloped the room, leading the heroes to cover their eyes from the blindness of this phenomenon. The light pierced through the horde of Heartless with ease and the room engulfed into pure whiteness, leaving no darkness unturned. Sonic tried to peak through his fingers, but the light was just too much for his green eyes.
"Damn," Sonic shouted out. "This is some bright stuff."
"Kairi!" Knuckles shouted out, covering his eyes with his arm. "Are you ok?"
Suddenly, the light and its powerful brightness that swept through the piled-up Shadows vanished, along with those pesky Heartless that jumped on Kairi and the Shadow Sora. The near-blinded heroes dropped their guard and looked to see if Kairi and the Shadow Sora were ok.
"Kairi?" Sonic asked, hoping she was ok.
As the light disappeared, there stood Kairi in the grasp of Sora, back in his human form. The Keyblade Master had returned, and had his friend tightly in his arms, keeping her safe.
"Thank you, Kairi," Sora said softly, looking at his friend, who was tightly in his arms.
"Sora…" Kairi responded, her gentle tone grateful to feel and hear friend once again.
The faces of Sonic, Knuckles, Donald, and Goofy lit up seeing Sora alive and well, especially as they all thought he was long gone from this mortal plane.
"Sora!" Donald and Goofy shouted out in joy.
"Kid!" Knuckles added in disbelief.
Sonic's eyes, once full of concern, were now gleaming with happiness. The usually cocky and full of attitude hedgehog was near tears seeing his friend ok. It was a great feeling to him that he was safe and back with him, Donald, Goofy, and Kairi. The blue blur moved closer to Sora, who had now stopped hugging Kairi and turned his attention to Sonic.
"Hey Sonic, long time no see, huh," Sora said with a smile and a tease.
"Kid, you had me worried there," Sonic replied, tapping his friend on the arm. "Welcome back pal, I knew you would find a way back to us."
However, before Sora could reply, the voice of Silver broke through the reunion. It was as if the hedgehog from the future was calling out to them telepathically.
"Guys, get out of here!" Silver shouted out.
"Silver!" Sora replied, looking around for his silver friend. "Where are you? We can't leave you here"
"There is time to escape with us!" Sonic added, shouting to the sound of Silver's voice.
"There is no time. There are too many Heartless and I need to find Ansem. Get out and get Kairi to safety," Silver ordered, his voice stern.
"Silver is right," Knuckles said, his voice showing concern. "Sora will need time to recover from that ordeal and Kairi will be safer back in Traverse Town."
Sonic turned to Sora and Kairi and looked at the duo from Destiny Islands, he gave them a look to say, "We need to get out of here."
Sora and Kairi nodded, and the two ran toward the exit, followed by Sonic, Knuckles, Donald, and Goofy. The Gummi Ship was not far away and just over by the reversing waterfalls at the World Gate. The group headed to the ship and back to the safety of Traverse Town, where they could regroup, strategize on how to help Silver, and detail what happened at Hollow Bastion to Leon, The Chaotix, and the rest of the team.
TRAVERSE TOWN - WATERWAYS
"So, tell us what happened?" Leon asked, eager to find out what happened on Hollow Bastion.
"And don't skip the important details," Vector added, his detective mind wanting to fully understand their experiences and what they found out.
In the dimly lit, damp, and wet waterways underneath Traverse Town, Sora, Kairi, Donald, Goofy, and Sonic began to explain what happened on Hollow Bastion. Knuckles was down in the waterways also, but he was close by assembling the pieces of the Master Emerald, trying to figure out how many more were missing and piecing together why he couldn't find any on Hollow Bastion.
The group explained to Leon, Vector, Espio, and Charmy what went down and their adventure in that darkened world. Sora explained that Riku was possessed by Ansem, who was puppeteering everything. Donald and Goofy explained the battle to save Kairi's heart which was in Sora's all along. Sonic explained how he turned back into his normal self from his powerful Werehog form and that Silver is still at the castle fighting off the Heartless and seeking Ansem. Kairi added that Knuckles saved a group of prisoners from the depths of the castle's dungeon and they are safely back at Tails' workshop, being assessed by G.U.N operatives, along with the kidnapped princesses. Leon, intrigued by the Keyhole situation, asked the group more about it.
"The darkness is flowing out of the keyhole," Leon said, trying to get his head around everything.
"It could be the reason why there are so many Heartless lingering around," Espio added, his ninja-like mind connecting the dots.
"The keyhole needs to be sealed right?" Sora asked, looking at Leon and the Team Chaotix Detective Agency.
"Maybe," Leon replied, in his usual blunt tone. "But no one will know what will happen when it's sealed."
"Surely like any other world," Sonic asked, confused by that statement. "It's sealed by the Keyblade and the world is locked tight from darkness?"
"I don't think this Keyhole is that simple," Vector said, his investigative mind racing with hypotheses.
"What do you mean?" Donald asked, eager to understand more.
"Well, if that Keyhole was made for that Dark Keyblade and needed the princesses' hearts to awaken it, sounds to me this was man-made rather than organic like you've found on other worlds," Vector explained.
"What do you mean, Vector?" Goofy asked, slightly puzzled, and scratched his head.
"I'm saying that the Keyhole for that world is artificial, no simple Keyblade would be able to seal that thing shut," Vector explained further, looking at the group.
"Yeah, it would need something powerful to lock it," Charmy added, with his usual innocence.
"So, like a powerful Keyblade?" Sora asked, looking at Team Chaotix.
Vector paused and placed his hand on his long, crocodile chin, trying to ponder an answer. However, it was Espio who came up with a hypothesis.
"I would say so," Espio explained. "Maybe one to outbalance the darkness, perhaps a Keyblade made of 100% light."
"Like a Lightsaber?" Charmy asked innocently.
"Wrong kind of light and the wrong franchise, Charmy," sighed Espio, shaking his head.
"Espio, that's a great observation," Vector said with a smile, patting his fellow team member on the back.
"Sounds like Espio is indeed right," Leon added, folding his arms and leaning against the caved wall. "But finding a Keyblade to outweigh darkness will be hard to find."
"I'm sure we can find something," Sonic said with a smile looking at Sora. "Right, pal?"
Sora nodded and turned to Kairi, his friend he saved from the depths of Hollow Bastion. Perhaps she could aid Sora in his quest to get a powerful Keyblade to seal that man-made keyhole.
"Let's take a walk," Kairi said to Sora, her eyes looking into his. "Maybe a good talk and some time to catch up will help."
"Good idea," Sora said. "Guys I will see you in a bit."
Donald and Goofy nodded in agreement, Sonic also giving them a thumbs up.
"Perhaps we should go speak with Merlin," Goofy suggested, looking at Donald. "He might know more about finding Sora a much more powerful Keyblade."
"Good idea, Goofy," Donald replied, agreeing with his friend, then turning to Sonic. "Sonic, do you want to join us?"
Sonic smiled but shook his head, "Thanks guys, but let me go and see Tails and everyone at his workshop. Check in there and perhaps see if he can tinker something up for us."
"Ok, but no running off this time," Donald said playfully.
"Yeah, we don't want to come chasing you again," Goofy added with a chuckle.
"The last time left, you left us in the dust and the dark," Sora chuckled.
Sonic gave a grin and a smug shrug, "Hey, gotta go fast remember," he teased.
"Good call," Vector said, looking at Charmy and Espio. "Come on team, let's get back to the office. We can help from there."
Leon didn't say anything but gave everyone a nod, he knew there was much to do if they wanted that Keyhole sealed. With that everyone agreed and they set off on their tasks. Sonic went to see Tails, the princesses, and the heroes rescued by Knuckles, Donald & Goofy made their way to Merlin's place to seek answers; with Sora & Kairi taking a stroll in the waterways and underground cavern to catch up, but also talk about if they could think ways to create this new Keyblade.
SECOND DISTRICT
As Sonic left the waterways and into the second district, heading towards the doorway to the first district and Tails' workshop. He couldn't stop shaking off what he remembered and saw from earlier. He was still puzzled about how Sora turned into a Shadow Heartless, but not his friend Aqua down in the Realm of Darkness.
"If Aqua kept her physical form as a husk… Why didn't Sora?" Sonic said to himself, as he walked through the centre of this lit-up district, his shoes echoing with each step on the cobbled streets. "It just doesn't make sense to me. There must be more to all this turning into a Heartless and a husk, surely?"
However, as Sonic passed the hotel he heard a commotion occurring in the district's centre square, near the water feature down below.
"The heck is that?" Sonic said aloud.
The curiosity of the hedgehog peaked as he looked down over the stone wall to see what was all the ruckus. Below was a group of NeoShadow Heartless circling what seemed to be a green-haired and timid boy. Sonic's eyes looked closely and he recognised the boy in trouble.
"Hey, it's Wally!" Sonic exclaimed. "He's in trouble!"
Amidst the chaotic clash of worlds and the encroaching threat of NeoShadow Heartless, Sonic's sharp eyes focused on the figure of Wally, the Pokémon trainer from a distant realm. Memories of their encounter at the Colosseum during the Phil Cup flashed in Sonic's mind, recalling the strong bond between Wally and his formidable Pokémon, Kirlia.
"Wally's in a tight spot," Sonic exclaimed with a sense of urgency in his voice. "Time to call in reinforcements!"
Wally, determined and swift in his actions, swiftly retrieved a Pokéball from his pocket. With a resolute press at its centre, the red and silver sphere enlarged, ready to unleash its hidden power. Sonic, anticipating the move, urged Wally to summon his trusted ally.
"Come on, kid! Throw out your Pokémon!" Sonic called out, the air charged with anticipation.
From below, Sonic witnessed the unfolding drama as Wally summoned his loyal companion to the battlefield. With a swift toss, the Pokéball soared into the air, and with a burst of energy, Gallade materialized—a majestic and powerful presence.
"Gallade, lend us your strength!" Wally commanded, his voice echoing determination.
Gallade, the evolved form of Kirlia, emerged with a flourish, showcasing its Fighting and Psychic prowess. This Blade Pokémon, a master of courtesy and swordsmanship, stood poised to defend its ally. Swords extended from its elbows, gleaming with a razor-sharp intensity.
"Gallade!" the Pokémon cried out, a fusion of elegance and power emanating from its form.
Wally, determined and focused, raised his arm in a swift gesture, commanding Gallade to unleash its formidable moves.
"Gallade, Psycho Cut!" he shouted with authority.
In an instant, Gallade's blades glowed with ethereal energy as it sliced through the approaching NeoShadow Heartless with unparalleled speed. The Psychic and Fighting-type Pokémon moved with a dance-like precision, each movement calculated and swift. Sonic, watching from above, marveled at the seamless coordination between Wally and Gallade.
"Nice one, Wally!" Sonic whispered to himself, a hint of admiration in his voice.
The memory of battling against Kirlia flashed through his mind, but this evolved form was proving to be a force to be reckoned with.
As the defeated Heartless dissipated into shadows, Wally wasted no time in calling out the next move.
"Gallade, Air Slash!" the lad commanded, pointing to the approaching NeoShadows.
Gallade responded with a majestic twirl, creating a whirlwind of blades that cut through the air, slashing at the remaining NeoShadow Heartless. The battlefield became a symphony of elegance and destruction as the Heartless struggled to withstand the onslaught.
Sonic couldn't help but grin, his blue eyes widening in amazement.
"Now that's what I call a combo!" Sonic said proudly. "Wally and this Gallade are tearing it up down there."
Unaware of Sonic's watchful eyes, Wally continued to exhibit his mastery, showcasing the depth of his connection with Gallade. As the last few Heartless stood defiantly, Wally raised his voice once again, commanding the final blow.
"Gallade, finish them off with Psychic!" Wally's command echoed with unwavering confidence.
Gallade's eyes glowed with an intense psychic energy as it focused its power. The remaining NeoShadow Heartless were lifted into the air, ensnared by an invisible force. Sonic, observing from above, couldn't help but be impressed by the sheer magnitude of Gallade's Psychic prowess.
"Whoa! This is next-level stuff," Sonic exclaimed to himself, a mix of awe and excitement in his tone. "Silver would be so jealous."
With a surge of power, Gallade unleashed its Psychic onslaught, causing a spectacular explosion of darkness as the Heartless were defeated. The battlefield, once shrouded in chaos, now cleared, revealing Wally and Gallade standing triumphant.
"We did it pal!" Wally said with excitement in his tone, looking at his comrade.
"Gallade," the Pokémon said with a nod turning to his friend.
"Those Heartless stand no chance against us," Wally remarked. "You were awesome."
As Sonic observed Wally and Gallade's triumphant moment, a keen awareness tingled in the back of his mind. His ever-alert green eyes caught the subtle movement of a NeoShadow, stealthily approaching the duo from behind, with it poised to strike.
"Oh no you don't!" Sonic declared, a determined gleam in his eyes as he swiftly leaped onto a nearby stone ledge. In an instant, he transformed into a spinning blue blur, ready to intervene and protect his friends from the impending threat.
With the force of gravity and the unmatched speed that defined Sonic, he descended from the air like a comet, locked onto the unsuspecting NeoShadow. Before Wally and Gallade could react, Sonic, in his iconic ball form, collided with the Heartless with a powerful impact. The force of the supercharged energy shattered the menacing Heartless, dispersing it into fragments of darkness.
Wally, momentarily stunned, turned towards the unexpected savior, his eyes widening in recognition.
"Sonic, is that you?" Wally asked in surprise
"Gallade?" Gallade questioned also, looking at Wally.
Sonic, always one for dramatic flair, turned with a grin and gave Wally and Gallade a thumbs up.
"Hey, Wally! Long time no see, pal," Sonic greeted with his trademark confidence, a wide grin on his face. "I see Kirlia has evolved since our last encounter at the Phil Cup."
Wally, wiping sweat from his brow, turned to face Sonic, a mix of surprise and recognition flashing across his features.
"Sonic! It's been a while," he exclaimed, a sense of camaraderie evident in his voice. "Yeah, Kirlia evolved into Gallade, and we've been through quite a few adventures since then."
Gallade, standing proudly by Wally's side, nodded in acknowledgment, its blades gleaming with residual energy from the battle. Sonic couldn't help but be impressed by the transformation from Kirlia to this formidable Blade Pokémon.
"Looks like you and Gallade make one heck of a team," Sonic remarked, crossing his arms. "That Psychic move of yours? Pure genius."
Wally's grin widened at Sonic's compliment, the camaraderie between the two evident in their exchange.
"Thanks, Sonic. We've been working on our synergy, and Gallade here never disappoints," Wally replied, patting his partner affectionately. "But what brings you to this world? Last I heard, you went on a disappearing act into a dark portal with your friend Shadow."
Sonic scratched his head with a sheepish grin, "Ah, that? Yeah, it's been a ride and a half, pal. I had to save Amy from that dark portal. Then, I've been helping our pal Sora seal some Keyholes, you know, the usual hero stuff. Now, I'm here in Traverse Town, ready to save another world in peril. What about you?"
Wally's expression turned serious as he began to explain, "Well, I heard Sora was here, and I was told he's in the Second District waterways. I've got a gift for him, something that might help in his quest to save worlds."
Sonic raised an eyebrow, curiosity gleaming in his eyes.
"A gift, huh? You're full of surprises, Wally," Sonic said with a tease. "What have you got for him?"
Without missing a beat, Wally reached into his pocket and pulled out another Pokéball. However instead of a red and silver sphere, this ball was black and yellow. It gleamed in the ambient light as he held it out for Sonic to see.
Sonic's eyes widened with intrigue, "What's this? Another Pokémon ready to join the party?" The blue hedgehog questioned with interest.
Wally chuckled, shaking his head, "Not exactly. This is for Sora," the boy began to explain. "It's a special Pokémon that might come in handy. I think Sora will appreciate the extra help in his journey."
Sonic nodded in understanding, a grin spreading across his face.
"Well, Wally, you're always full of surprises," Sonic said. "He is indeed down in the waterways with his friend Kairi. I bet he would be happy to see you and Gallade."
"Thanks, Sonic. Do you want to join us?" Wally asked hopeful anticipation in his eyes.
"Sorry, pal. I need to get Tails over at his workshop," Sonic replied. "I need check on the Princesses we saved, and speak with some others. Duty calls, you know?"
Wally nodded in understanding, his appreciation for Sonic's sense of responsibility evident in his expression.
"No worries, Sonic," Wally assured a determined glint in his eyes. "We'll catch up later. Give Tails my regards."
Sonic saluted with a playful grin, "Will do. You take care, and keep kicking butt, Gallade."
"Gallade!" the Pokémon responded with a nod, a silent acknowledgment of the trust and camaraderie they shared.
With a quick exchange of nods and a parting wave, Sonic and Wally, accompanied by the mighty Gallade, went their separate ways for the time being. Each hero had their mission to fulfil, their destinies intertwined yet branching into unique paths. As Sonic sped off into the distance towards the first district, he left the echoes of his trademark "Gotta go fast!" In his wake, Wally turned his attention back to Gallade.
"Come on, Gallade. Let's go find Sora," Wally said with excitement. "I hope he likes his gift."
The Blade Pokémon stood ready, its gaze fixed on the horizon, prepared for the next challenge that awaited them in the Second District waterways.
