Chapter 27 – Morning on Atlantis
Deep in thought while flipping through her book, trying to find the information she needed to answer her question, Sam's attention was once again interrupted by the meowing of a cat and the gentle haunting hooting of an owl outside the cosy log cabin room she was in. Giving a gentle huff at this continued disturbance, she thought she ought to let them in as Jack was not around to do so. Instead of getting up to do it, the room around her suddenly melted away into darkness and Sam immediately understood she had 'let them in', because the meowing and gentle hooting had become U Sang's and NightOwl's identical and understandable firm mind words. "Lady Samantha, you must leave the dream of sleep time and clothe yourself as the first meal of waking time is waiting. Master Jack and others need your attention before you return to Earth with Lady Lya."
"Thank you. I'm awake! And apologise for any stray thoughts before I let you in." Sam answered verbally and mentally as she sat up in bed. While immediately realising the cabin's comfy chair and looking in a book for answers she couldn't find, had been a dream andshe was in her room on Atlantis. Hearing a familiar gentle chuckle, Sam looked over at the culprit, who was fully dressed, standing in the open doorway onto the balcony, and huffed at him. "They woke you earlier?" As her mind started to adjust to what was going on around her.
Smiling back at herand realising she might need a gentle reminder of some the changes going on, Jack shook his head and admitted. "No General, I woke as I usually do. You were still deeply asleep so I showered and dressed. Then got a message from Shepard that they were going to the command table in the Mess Hall and could we join them when ready. I thought this was the best way to wake you as calling your name didn't work." And saw from her changing expressions everything was falling into place.
Before Sam could say anything or react, NightOwl mentally hooted lightly to them both. "Master Jack also informed us you tend to go into attack mode when awakened from a deep sleep, and bite. We assured him you would not attack us as we would have to wait till your mind let us in, and we, of course, would not be there physically. It must have been a good dream as it took us a while to get your mind to let us in as we asked it to do so. We are glad you have both had a good sleep and we will meet you in the Gate room of departure when the time is right. We will now leave you so you can meet the others as requested and break your sleep fast with a meal."
After Sam and Jack felt them leave their minds with gentle hoot and purr, Sam started to make her way to the bathroom and gathering her day clothes as she passed them, she huffed. "You didn't have to tell them I bite."
With pure innocences in tone and expression Jack defended himself. "I wasn't sure if 'that' automatic thought of defence of yours would hurt them, so warned them. After all, you really wouldn't want a hurt Owl dragon or Panther hopping around or crying out in your mind, now would you?"
Sam silently shook her head at his comments, while hiding her smile as she was facing away from him and entered the bathroom.
Knowing he was safe Jack called out. "Anything you want me to pack in your 'go bag'? It already has clean clothes and washing basics for 3 days?"
"Just the things on the side table and my laptop, I'll bring my other toiletries out with me. I won't be long." Sam answered.
It didn't take long for Jack to find the bits and pieces and pack them, Sam to come out of the bathroom dressed to go, and to put the rest of the things she needed to take with her, in her 'go bag'. Hooking the bag over her shoulder and giving the room one last look round, Sam said quietly. "It was an interesting Command, met some interesting people and friends. I think I'm ready to step back from the action line and stay on Earth or in close orbit to Earth on the Hammond. Thank you, Atlantis." and was sure a light on the wall flicked on and off, but didn't like to point it out.
Understanding her feelings and memories, Jack said gently. "You are not leaving Atlantis behind, the family here will visit the Waterfall Site on rotation, the Hammond will be added to it making it a bigger Command and you will have a good team to back you up as well." then added with a smile. "How about we fly to the mess hall to meet the others. It will be quicker and there might even be food left. After all, Teal'c will be at breakfast and I wouldn't be surprised if he's had a word to have extra supplies for his trip home, and Daniel will have grabbed all the coffee he can find to drink and beans to store."
Laughing and tucking memories back in their boxes, Sam added. "Don't forget Vala as well."
With mock horror in his tone Jack exclaimed. "That's all the utensils gone as well then. Perhaps we should tell Shepard to put in a very large order to Hank with the heading 'Kitchens raided by Daniel, Teal'c and Vala.'" Hearing her relaxed laugh and seeing it in her eyes, he knew she was ready to face everyone and gave a slight nod. As Sam nodded back her silent agreement, Jack opened the door out of their apartment and as they walked into the corridor they put on their best General expressions and attitude.
The Lieutenant who'd been on duty all night immediately came to attention with the greeting. "Ma'am, Sir."
Seeing the forcefield chair against the wall, Jack asked. "I see the chair is still here. Has it behaved itself?"
The forcefield chair seemed to edge slightly towards the officer who with a slightly guilty expression on his face admitted. "At the beginning of NightOwl's display it started to shift towards your door Ma'am, Sir, so I sat on it, and it settled down. I stayed awake and alert all the time."
Remembering the man's reaction to their arrival and orders, Jack hid his smile knowing Sam was hiding hers and with a serious tone said. "You did well and it was a wonderful display. Thank you for guarding us. We are taking the chair to go to the Mess Hall. Can we give you a lift?"
With a slight look of horror on his face at the thought of flying the chair, the Lieutenant stuttered out. "Thank you. Err ... No. Sir. I need to take the things to the kitchen on this floor and then secure your room Ma'am. It has been a honour working under your command Ma'am and hope I will be on rotation for the Waterfall site. Sir." he finished knowing he was babbling.
Smiling, Sam said. "Thank you, Johnson. It has certainly been an interesting command and look forward to seeing you back on Earth sometime."
"Right. We shouldn't keep the others waiting." Jack said, then while giving mental orders to the chair he added lightly. "The chair will need an officer to look after it. As you two seem to get on well, I will leave it in your care for use around Atlantis. I think, people carrier rather than goods, as you are attached to infirmary duties, but it will do both. If your gene is strong enough you can think the orders, if not just talk to it."
Not quite sure what to make of this new addition to his duties, especially talking to a forcefield chair, Lieutenant Johnson nodded. Then watched in awe as the single chair changed back into the shape he'd seen the Generals travel in last night, and another green and red flashing disc appear beside it.
With a gentle laugh Jack said quietly. "It will help you by carrying the plates etc from our room to the kitchen. Don't worry the two discs will find each other when need be. Have a good sleep when you go off duty."
"Thank you Sir. Ma'am." Johnson said, with a slight hint of trepidation in it as the disc beside him was now a flashing hovering large tray. Seeing it start to float towards the room Johnson turned to follow it, wondering what was going to happen next.
As Sam and Jack took their places on the waiting hovering sofa, Sam couldn't help exclaiming quietly. "How did you make it divide in two like that?"
With a smile Jack explained "Sam, it has always been capable of dividing, just hasn't needed to do it till now. That is how it can carry really long and heavy loads or just be a reserve disc in case the other one fails." Then added mentally and verbally. "We are coming in by sofa. I suggest you clear the window area so we can land and get off easily." And the forcefield sofa, immediately shielded up and floated off at speed towards the nearest exit.

In the busy Mess Hall at the command table, or tables as it was just a convenient group of tables that the leader of Atlantis, the premier team and guests usually used. John Shepard still feeling his 'feet' as joint leader of Atlantis and promotion to Brigadier General shook his head and smiled, then explained quietly to a very puzzled Richard Woolsey, as their breakfast conversation had suddenly stopped, with John looking a bit vacant. "Sorry about that. I'm not going mad, Jack has just mentally messaged me." then added with a sigh "This is going to be an interesting first command to this lot." and immediately stood up, banged a spoon hard on the table to get some quiet in the room, before, trying hard to keep any lightness out of his voice, commanded. "Attention people!" and was glad his voice didn't squeak as he raised it to the right tone.
The breakfast chatter between civilians and serving personnel rippled into silence. Seeing he had everyone's attention, John carried on in the same tone. "Move the tables in front the window space to the side to make a landing area for the Generals, who are coming in by hover sofa, in next few minutes."
As the people concerned around the room looked amused, then started to glance at each other with questioning looks. John immediately remembered not many people saw how the Generals left the Gate room last night, or heard him relate it to his team, so carried on in the same tone. "I mean it people! The red and green flashing forcefield carrying the Generals will be coming through that window space in the next few minutes."
With Vala and Cassie watching them, Jon, Daniel, Cam and Teal'c were the first to obey the order, even though they were guests and further away from the area that needed clearing. Ronon, Teyla, with the first huff of the morning from Rodney, joined them and started to move tables to make the landing area. Realising they ought to move as well the people closest to the window space joined in, while making sure they could find other tables and keep their breakfasts safe, as well as getting a good view of what was going to happen next.
As the last ones had just settled at their tables, to everyone's amazement, the whole room was bathed in bright red and green flashing light, as if to give a warning something was coming, before the flashing shielded sofa actually came through the window space side end first, so it could fit through without squashing the occupants. As soon as it was through, it neatly silently spun round so the front of the sofa was facing the command table, before settling down at a height so the unseen occupants would be able to step off comfortably on to the floor. As soon as Sam and Jack started to get up from the sofa and put their go bags on their shoulders, the red and green flashing stopped and the travelling shield disappeared to reveal the couple, looking totally relaxed and as though their entrance and trip was just an every day occurrence.
Watching the spectacle unfold John Shepard was smiling as he stayed standing and was now joined by Richard Woolsey, who after a very good calming night's sleep was finding facing the unusual spectacle interesting rather than down right frightening, managed a slight smile at the couple's entrance.
As Sam and Jack stepped away from the now plain green sofa, at their own table the retired SG1 team were relaxed and grinning, joined the others around them who had silently stood up as a mark of respect to both, but also to Sam who was leaving her command of Atlantis that morning. With a slight nod from Jack, to silently tell her this was her show. Sam smiled at John and Richard then glancing round the room and said. "At ease everyone, and thank you for all your friendship and support through out my command here. I know you will extend both to Mr Wosley as he joins General Sheppard in leading our family of Atlantis."
With smiles and nods people returned to their food and quiet conversations while keeping an eye on what was going on at the command table, and John said quietly. "That was quite an entrance. I trust you both had a good night's sleep."
Before either Sam or Jack could answer or join the others at the table, everyone's attention was drawn to the forcefield sofa behind the couple, because it started to shrink into a flat dinner plate sized red and green disc, then spun on the spot a couple of times before totally disappearing. With a slight smile and remembering the argument between the two last night, John couldn't resist asking. "You said something to it Jack?"
Turning their attention away from the empty space and back to the speaker, and ignoring Sam's smile, Jack answered with a slight smile but serious tone. "Not this time. It has gone to help Lieutenant Johnson, who will be in charge of it and will keep it in the infirmary for future use. It appears it likes carrying people rather than goods." Glancing over at the other group he was interested in, and getting used to seeing the differences in the man he needed to talk to, Jack added. "Jon, will you pass the control panel to him and any relevant information he may need? I don't think he's going to be comfortable talking to it when out and about."
With a smile Jon keep silent, but nodded his agreement, allowing Jack to continue and address that group as a whole. "We'll all catch up in the Gate room later before we go our separate ways. Make sure you've got everything you need as there will be not chance to return for forgotten goods."
Getting nods agreement from the others and seeing Vala give Daniel a gentle dig to stop what ever his comment was in its tracks, Jack turned his attention back to the command table and the people coming towards it with trays of food and asked hopefully "Any cake left over?"
With a smile the man put the tray of food on the table where Jack would sit and answered. "Sorry Sir, it all went last night. Your breakfast as ordered via Atlantis." then remembering the feeling he'd woken up with 'that this was the right time to do it and to the right person', added quietly. "If I might be so bold as to ask a favour, General?"
Knowing the request was not addressed to him, but fearing the worst as the man was very good at his job, John Shepard butted in. "You're not going to leave us are you?"
The man smiled and answered. "No Sir. But my son, who is a very good chef needs a new start and some guidance since his mother passed and I am unable to be there for him. He is a civilian and knows nothing about the space force, and if possible it would be best kept that way. Perhaps a civilian job nearby the Waterfall Site so I could visit?" he finished hopefully as his son was a good person just got in with the wrong crowd that wouldn't leave him alone.
With an idea flashing through his mind, which he mentally nudged Sam with, Jack nodded and answered. "If he is as good a chef as you are I'll gladly see what we can do. Give John all the details and he will pass them on to me when I'm back on Earth and we will work with the idea."
With a nod of thanks and glad he'd not been reprimanded for being forward, he quickly left with the other member of staff who'd put Sam's breakfast on the table. Taking their places at the table and Jack making sure he was not too close to the others, he started with his coffee as Sam sat down with the comment. "It could work." and a huge grin as she babbled the idea. "Like O'Malley's back home."
Picking up that something had gone on between the couple, John asked with a slight smile. "Care to share those thoughts Sam?" before immediately adding. "If you don't mind me saying, your gifts have mellowed over night, Sir." still not too sure how to address O'Neill, when they were talking in a private group.
Understanding the problem Jack answered both points. "Given names is fine when we are talking like this. The gifts might be mellowing but Daniel's book gifts are still a pain and I noticed Vala had to dig him in the ribs again to stop him trying to point something out in public. Probably the fact my hair is multi coloured but there isn't any blue in it, for which I'm very thankful." Seeing Sam trying hard to stifle a giggle, he carried on quickly to move things on. "I apologise for throwing a mental idea at Sam like that just now, the thought came across stronger and quicker than it should have. We are still learning how to use that gift, you also have that link with your team and Richard, so you need to work that out in private with them as soon as possible."
Seeing Richard's flicker of worry Jack added. "You will not be able to read minds just alert the others to something going on." then carried on. "Back to the Waterfall Site, Bert's Diner and guest house in the town adjacent to it is family lead and will be a good off site meeting place for personnel to relax and meet guests or family who are not allowed on site or in the know. There are the usual amenities of a small town and the people may gossip but will not press for answers when the base is up and running. It was the same when the Phoenix Organisation was based in the valley."
Keeping his attention on both of them rather than just John, Jack carried on. "I know you've both been dropped in the deep end. By working together and learning from each other's strengths you will be able to provide strong leadership, and the IOA patient, when she is well enough, will give another layer to it, so include her in your team as soon as possible. Richard, you already know some of the people here from your past visits and be able to find friendship among them as you settle in. John, you already have the trust of everyone on Atlantis and your team and Chief Medical Officer will give you that extra link of friendship you will need. It will be useful if both of you work out a code word so they understand when meetings are work related rather than friendly chat time. 'Update' is an easy word to use as it can be dropped into any conversation without 'that' reason being obvious to any one outside your group."
Sensing Jack was talking from experience, John couldn't help asking. "Did it work with your team?"
Jack smiled at that and hearing Sam's soft chuckle, freely admitted. "Everyone but Daniel, he would come in regardless and spout off and I would have to politely reinforce that rule. By cutting him off and explaining sternly that that update will be done later. Can't say that worked considering what happened with the President's call. I expect Rodney will need telling a few times. If necessary, remind him that you can always get Atlantis to shut him out of his computers. That is if the threat of lemons has stopped working."
Smiling at that idea, John nodded as Jack carried on. "Though Atlantis is a computer, it can show you the pros and cons of an idea if you ask the right questions, don't be afraid to use it now it is up to full power and has new archives. But always remember the differences between computers and humans. Of course, Landry and myself will keep in close contact with both of you, officially and off the record if the need arises, because the Waterfall Site will have direct contact with Atlantis without using the Stargate." Seeing both John and Sam getting ready to jump in with questions Jack added quickly. "Before the pair of you butt in, I have no idea how that will work, just know it can happen." Needing a diversion he immediately continued. "So John how is the City and family feeling this morning?"
Seeing Sam smile and give a little shake of her head as she carried on tucking into her breakfast, John realised he couldn't push for answers, but could take advantage of the moment to drink his coffee as he gathered his thoughts about the night and morning, while also realising once again he couldn't pass the question on to anyone else. Taking a sip of his coffee his thoughts were interrupted by the gentle but loud growl of Jack's stomach.
Feeling and hearing it as he looked at his healthy breakfast of poached egg, toast and bowl of fresh fruit salad, Jack silently agreed with his stomach ... it was not enough or fair, it deserved more and as no one was really watching them as everyone else had gone back to finish their own breakfasts, he commented quietly. "Be warned John, I asked for the same breakfast as Sam's because I'm totally healthy and hungry. Regardless of that fact, Atlantis, being a computer, still obeyed the original food orders Stargate Command's Medical Officer sent through before all this 'fun' started."
Leaving no pause for John to comment, and eyeing Sam's slight smile as she polished off her fried egg, and noting there were still 2 sausages, 3 hash browns and bacon untouched on her plate, Jack commented casually. "See you've not lost the habit of large breakfasts before a day's work or field trip. Worried the Nox might not eat real food and you'll get something like Thor's fiery yellow squares?" Seeing her eyes were bright with fun, Jack added with a slight plea. "I'm sure you'll not miss one sausage, especially as the Chef has given you a side plate for you to put it on and hand it over to me. Will also have the bonus of quietening my stomach." Glancing at John, he finished. "Sometimes it takes the 'human factor' to get round certain rules computers stick to, but always weigh the situation up before taking that step. I know having that sausage will not harm me." And immediately returned his attention back to his wife with a very hopeful expression.
As Sam gave a soft chuckle before looking down at her plate of food, as if checking it was all still there, John and Richard stayed silent realizing the couple had let down their official guard because they felt comfortable and safe with them to do it. Though she chuckled at Jack's comments Sam could still feel that edge of mental loneliness he was covering up and knew full well if they'd been alone together he would have taken 'that' sausage already, just as she would pinch his pancakes,
savoury or fruit, without any hesitation when they were alone in the apartment or cabin. She'd already noted Jack's healthy breakfast and that hers had extras, so was ready for a distraction ploy from him. If he hadn't done it, knowing he was perfectly healthy now, she would have offered him the gift, and carefully put the sausage on the spare plate before adding two hash browns. Looking back at him with a smile, that showed in her eyes her deep feelings for him, she carefully pushed the plate over to him, making sure their hands wouldn't touch, knowing the quiet looks and banter would have to do for now.
Fully understanding her deeper meanings Jack nodded and smiled his thanks, and immediately transferred his prize to his plate as if making sure Sam couldn't whip them back. He knew she wouldn't and cut the sausage up, then spearing a piece with his fork, but not raising it to eat it, he glanced over at the silent watching men, and said. "So John, the update on how Atlantis and family are feeling this morning after NightOwl's gift of a peaceful night's sleep, now and every night forever."
Smiling at the use of the suggested code word and quiet tone that showed there was no getting out it, and this was leaders talking to leaders, John nodded but took a moment, to stack and put his finished breakfast things to one side, quickly glanced at Richard for silent conformation it was alright to voice the conclusions of their earlier conversations, and got a nod of agreement back. Then, silently hoping he could keep this update to personnel only, he started firmly and confidently. "The team, Richard and I met up first thing and checked on all departments through out the City. Reports came back that everyone had a restful night's sleep, waking up in positive frames of mind instead of worrying about the future of the City should the power run out. Those on night shift stayed awake knowing they would sleep well later, NightOwl's flight seemed to have given them extra alertness and understanding. Because of this the whole atmosphere in the City is calmer, settled and hope it will continue into the future as NightOwl promised.
"Doctors in the infirmary report patients had a settled night and are recovering very well, and there is a new programme on their computer station indicating that NightOwl's flight was recorded as requested and can be shown in the future if it is needed. The children who watched the flight loved the show and slept well, those who look after them are picking up on stories in their cultures of winged creatures and dragons and will discuss them with the children and anyone else who wishes to join in. I've also taken up Daniel's idea of collating them and checking through the City's archives when we have time, I also reminded him he is leaving this morning so wouldn't be able to dig and delve into it himself but we will forward any information to him, via the Nox's twig communicator. He was alright with that arrangement. Only one grumble so far, that was Rodney when joining the others to move the table and chairs for your arrival, he wanted to go through the information the City has been putting together last night. Later this morning we will be having another meeting to discuss the formation of departments and who should 'man' Midway so we can recall the team and send them to Stargate Command, also how to best use it now we have direct Gate travel back to Earth. Sir." he finished hoping that was the right way to end his update and silently waited.
Taking a moment to silently read between the lines and John's body language, Jack knew exactly what the man was dodging, would have done the same, and said quietly. "Good report on how the Atlantis family is this morning, and well done regarding Daniel. Nice to see you, Richard and the team are already working in your new command roles. Regarding Midway, Rodney needs to come up with a safe way to dismantle the link to them from here and store the Gates safely because the City may need to travel and then return here and link with Midway again. Ideas for both Midway and Atlantis future use will change as the Space Force makes progress. For now take full advantage of Elder Opher's, NightOwl and U Sang's wider knowledge of the universe regarding the Wraith and Atlantis's situation. They will not interfere but will advise as necessary and report new information back to General Landry or myself through Sam if necessary. " He stopped and eyed the man, who didn't finch from his gaze and then added softly but firmly. "Now, tell me how the City feels this morning. General Carter and myself are not going to think you are mad, and from the look that went between you and Richard just now, he didn't when you discussed it with him this morning. If you have not discussed it with your team do so in that meeting after we leave, they need to know and understand that connection and how it can be used."
John couldn't help smiling at that statement or the fact he should even think that he was able to pull the wool over Jack's or even Sam's eyes, considering the slight smile and quick nod she gave him. Sighing his acknowledgement to both, he glanced at Richard got a slight nod of support again, and suddenly felt a very soft ripple run through his mind, remembered he'd felt it that morning when he woke up and realised with a slight shock and excitement it had to come from Atlantis. It was as if the City could feel his uncertainty and wanted to reassure him it was alright, and knew how to start his report. "You are correct Sir, I did discuss it with Richard but not the team yet, so I'll explain it in a similar way, though I know you have more experience of it than either of us."
Seeing Jack's silent slight nod, John knew he needed to get on with the update and trying hard not to let his excitement come through carried on. "Before you and guests came through the Gate, I assumed the feeling of edginess and uncertainty around the City was from us because of the situations we face, and nothing to do with Atlantis itself. Also the connection I use for the Jumper and other things belonging to the Ancients, is one way only, and that is me to it. But during the gift ceremony for the first I felt mental whispers of the City's loneliness at being deserted by the Ancients and it didn't want that to happen again. That is when I realised the connection between myself and the City is deeper and stronger than anyone thought it could now, I felt a mind ripple of reassurance, I know it comes from the City because I had one on waking up this morning, and it was totally different from my own way of calming any nerves before a mission or about taking joint command of the City."
Taking a very quick breath, his new found confidence showed through as he quickly carried on."You asked about how the City felt, that edginess coldness has gone and been replaced by a calm warmth. The dark empty corridors into places we've not explored yet but have to pass to get from A to B don't feel so threatening. It feels as though the City is looking out for us, wants to give something back to us as we look after it. It has. We left the computers on standby overnight as usual, Rodney checked this morning expecting to have to work through the information it was churning out before we left for NightOwl's flight. He was surprised to find that every department has the appropriate translated catalogue of what is in the buildings we have not explored yet. It is in modern languages with the master one in Ancient. No one ordered it to do it.
"We know Lady Lya has a strong connection with the City by the way she talked to it before and during the gift ceremony. I am sure there is a two way connection and felt by anyone with the strong Gene, so Jon will feel it as he settles in, also it is a result of you coming through the gate as the Ancient child."
Needing to put a stop to John's excitement, and where it might lead, Jack immediately quietly but firmly jumped. "Okay. Let's stop you there."
Seeing John stop but taking a breath probably to ask questions, Jack added. "The Ancient child has gone and will not come back and the Ancient gene is just that. We have got to where we are today by a combined effort from everyone and we take that combined effort into the future. When we came through the Gate we brought fresh batteries, they have been plugged in and everything naturally came online and is working as it should.
"We now know the Ancients made this City to gather and store information from other planets for future use. Their connection to the City is by mind and touch, so it is natural that the City gathers up the feelings and moods of those who live within it and probably stores them, so those who run the City know what is happening. Because you, Jon and myself are strong receivers we can feel that now the City is on full power and our minds interpret what they mean. As we know, the City is on full power and those who live in the City had a good night's sleep, it is not surprising we are more relaxed than before."
Jack took a quick breath, then with the General's firmness he was known for, added. "You and everyone around you, must never ever forget, Atlantis is a City with a computer that needs the right questions put into it either by mind or key board of some kind. It can not mend that leaky tap, can tell you how, even where it is in the City, but not actually do it. The most important thing we need to do is to learn how to use this City properly, and not get side tracked like the Ancients did. We will still keep our own separate back ups and escape routes. Lady Lya and the Nox are on a level way above us and you should always remember that, but don't be afraid to ask questions or give your views on anything and that goes for Richard and your team, because unlike some others who live in the Universe they will listen and talk back."
Knowing John and Richard needed a moment to take it all on board, Jack paused then carried on. "From the Doctors in the infirmary we now know the beds through out the City can indicate if someone is taken ill and summon their help. The doctors and you two as leaders, will need to reassure everyone that it is all it does. You, John, programmed the City to show everyone and record the gift from NightOwl and U Sang, so it was recorded visually and those calming senses that it gave were gathered up and will be released every night from now on. The City didn't do it by itself." Then in a lighter but firm tone he finished. "Now, I'm going to finish this breakfast and leave the three of you to chat about the things you need to do, though knowing Sam it was covered in her last night's email." Without waiting he started tucking in to the food in front of him before his stomach had a chance to start growling again.
"Thank you Sir." Sam said with a smile, while silently feeling the warmth of the contentment between them that was there without using their new mind link, which they were making sure not to do so, till Lya assured them it would be alright. Turning her attention to the others while quickly thinking back to Richard coming through the Gate alone, and her mixed emotions of excitement and fear as he explained everything and they started to workout a back up plan for Earth and Jack. She took a breath, gathered her thoughts before calmly expressing her feelings. "Richard, as Jack's wife and leader of Atlantis, thank you for what you have done, and welcome to Atlantis as joint leader with John. From John's comments just now and our brief meetings in the past, I know I leave Atlantis in safe hands due to your unique skills and knowledge regarding finance and various committees, combining with John's and his team's various expertise and skills. Also as colleagues and friends, Jack and I look forward to any visit you wish to make to the Waterfall site as well as any communications you make."
Seeing Jack's silent nod of agreement, and knowing words were not needed, about how he felt safer here than back on Earth at the moment, Richard nodded his thanks to Sam so she could carry on. Which she did, saying. "John, I think it would be a good idea if Simon mentored Richard in the same way he did when I started here." Glancing over to Richard again and knowing the two had already been introduced, she freely admitted. "Simon is very patient, and didn't mind my calls when I got lost in the City on the times I decided I wanted to go solo. He would also make a good partner to carry on with your self defence classes that Ronon gives."
Looking at John, Jack butted in quietly. "Has he told you he can shoot, and hits what he aims at?"
John nodded and remembering that chat, answered with a smile. "Yes, and we decided a demonstration in a lesson that will include the team and it should be sooner rather than later. With you as Richard's teacher I am not surprised at that result." Turning his attention back to Sam, John added. "Regarding last night's email, I was thinking of making two groups of mixed workers to check out the new towers, Atlantis has highlighted on the main computer in the Gate room, and leave the others for another time." Before adding with a sigh, as being the leader would mean changes for him. "I'm not going to be able to go out as much as I did before, so I'm going to have to work out which team is going to take my and my team's place in that rota."
Sam's understanding smile and gentle, "That's right." lead on to their discussions about the Atlantis projects, first of all between the two of them, then with Richard joining as they took note of his advice as well as giving him background to certain events when needed. All the while, Jack was enjoying his breakfast and listening to Sam as well as watching her work, rather than having to read the reports from Atlantis. In the past he might not have understood all her technobabble, but that didn't matter as he automatically picked up the important bits, by the subtle unconscious or very excited changes in her manner and voice, that enabled him to work out what to do next. Just like he could zone out Daniel's long explanations and pick out the important points, then in his most casual manner, that would annoy his friend no end but also help defuse the man's unconscious obsessive need to prove a point or that he was right, to get the praise his parents would have given him, but couldn't get as they died when he was a child.
Now though, there was no technobabble from Sam, just the important points being discussed, which he understood and picked up the mutual respect, trust and friendship John and Sam had for each other, and knew she would not only enjoy bringing the Waterfall Site into action, she would be a very good and successful leader. So when needed, he was content to give a silent nod of agreement or shake of his head, when he knew as Head of Home World, something would or wouldn't work, or be inadvisable to go down that line of thought. Then silently watched and listened as the three worked things out again, then if needed, another glance at him so he could give the final nod or shake of his head, and Richard gave the IOA's likely views on matters as well.
As the three were starting to wind things up, Jack quietly put his empty plates on the pile John made earlier, and realised they'd suddenly stopped talking. Checking the group to see if he'd missed anything, saw the reason they'd gone silent, the small twig that had lain on the middle of the table was now flashing green and brown. Glancing at John, he commented casually. "Lya gave SGC a chunky box thing for our communications, which we had to take to the top of the mountain to fire off our message into Space, then wait for her to come through the Gate to talk to us. So I'm guessing this is the improved mobile version, and as I've not officially been introduced to it, it is all yours, John. Just make sure the hologram figure that appears doesn't knock the pile of plates over. I would hate the paper work that went with getting replacements and so would you, or Richard come to that."
Smiling at Jack's joke and noting Richard understood it as well, John nodded, picked up the twig and twisted it, then put it back on the table, away from the pile of plates etc, just as a miniature hologram of General Landry emerged from it. And, a transparent green forcefield gently made a dome over them so they could talk in private without moving from their table. Because the forcefield was transparent and everyone could see the hologram and the group were alright, no alarms were sounded and they carried on either starting or finishing their breakfasts, or just sat ready to watch till they had to leave the Mess Hall due to time restrains and work.
For a moment there was silence between hologram Hank and the group, before Jack commented easily. "Hank nice to see you. You are standing on our breakfast table and if you kick out you will knock a stack of empty plates over. So, John is going to move you over to one side and you will not get in a twist trying to see us all as you give us your update on what has been going on over there."
With a chuckle, understanding the order behind the words, Landry answered. "Right, down to business it is Jack. I must admit it is very strange seeing you all in miniature and standing in a straight line across my desk. That means I can see you all without twisting round. But, if any of you move, you'll knock Walter's pile of papers over and I'll have to pick them up and sort them out." Then checked. "Are you sorted now, because nothing has wobbled here?"
"Yes, John has put you in the gap between Richard and Sam, rather than in the large space either side of me, in case my gifts interfere with it. We also have a forcefield around us for privacy as we are in the busy Mess Hall." Jack replied easily before changing to a serious tone and asking. "So update?"
The hologram of Hank nodded and commented. "Trust you all had a good night. Glad to see you have mellowed, though the hair is still a bit bright, Jack." Before Jack could come back at him, Hank started seriously. "Right, to make things easy we'll use given names all round. Richard, welcome to the 'space family' and glad to know you and Jack had each other's back during the past months, it must have been a rough time for both of you. Your possessions are being stored in a secure area in DC and you can let us know what you want in Atlantis and what you want kept here. The NCIS team are going to deal with the insurance details regarding your apartment and contents so need your permission to do so as well as who you are insured with. Also where you get your clothes from so they can get replacements and or the value of the one destroyed either in the fire or aftermath. It is going to be a while before the apartment can be used again so we need to know if you want to return there or would prefer to find something new after your joint command of Atlantis is over. Not sure when that will be, by the way. The answers can be sent in the usual manner on a secure disc or by courier after the Gate has been reopened."
Seeing Richard's hologram nod, Hank carried on. "Right, regarding the hospital and the activities around it. It is now safe and secure and arrests have been made, full reports will be waiting for you Jack when you return to Earth. John and Richard, the doctors are happy with your visitor's condition and she is ready to travel, with the escort nurse. I'm glad to say the patient is looking forward to the experience and her stay with you. Her family have been informed that all communication with her will be through Homeland, but in fact it will come through Paul Davis and either Jack or myself as head of Home World. Jack, nothing will happen here till you and Sam are on your way back, so don't delay too long. We will get a call from the Nox family here when you leave Atlantis."
"Right, now on to the farmhouse and clearing the Waterfall site for our arrival. Hank." Jack said realising they did need to wind things up quickly and had a few things to do before they left.
"Fine. Both teams at the farmhouse finished the job, a bit of a car chase for our team but the bad guys are rounded up and in a secure place and being processed by both teams. Again a full report will be ready for you on your return. As our special security team and NCIS officers work very well together, it will be a good idea to keep that contact up. The Waterfall site will be cleared of outside personnel for your arrival as you asked. There is accommodation at the entrance to the base of the site if you want to bring Atlantis personnel with you. The guest cabins may not arrive till after you are there. If they do arrive before you, they will be shells waiting for fittings to be fixed in, so you might need to stay inside you own cabin or move around when no one is on site for a while."
Jack nodded knowing he'd have to work around that, having not discussed the next bit yet he explained to Hank. "Cam will be the first through Atlantis Gate, using the direct route, bringing Sam's things and instructions from me for both of you. From then on it will be business as usual for SGC as that one can be called the successful test run from here to you. The team on Midway will also come through with him and they can all go onto the Waterfall Site if they wish, or they can take a few days leave as I don't expect anyone from Atlantis or SGC to work at the site till all the cabins are finished, and I have shown Sam what is there. Make sure Cam and Midway team have at least two weeks provisions with them."
Seeing a nod from Hank and John, Jack carried on. "Before Cam comes through, liaise with John about a replacement on Midway from your end, the use for it may be changing now Atlantis has full power. Rodney is in charge of the change over and alterations so Midway can survive for a period of time without being attached to Atlantis. Also, Jon and Cassie will be in touch regarding their possessions, make sure there is somewhere for them to stay when they visit the Mountain in the future, in the same manner as before." Then with a slight smile, wondering if Gibbs was the only 'guest' left, Jack finished. "Is it quiet at the Mountain yet?"
"It is at the moment." Hank sighed, then remembering he needed to give on some more information, added. "First though, we've passed on full details of the Destiny and personnel to the Nox family here as requested, through the twig connection, it works extremely well. I've also included a message with code words the Nox will use, so Destiny knows it has been organised by you and can be trusted. I'm due to contact Destiny in the usual way tomorrow morning our time and will explain it all, including the shift in our jobs and finding a new Ancient Site being the reason I'm doing it and moving to Home World."
"You don't think they will go for my new glitter look then?" Jack butted in.
With a laugh Hank answered. "No, not really." then with a little shake of his head carried on with a hint of seriousness in his tone. "You know you told me I should visit Odyssey when life was quiet."
Over Jack's soft chuckle, Hank added. "It was relatively quiet. The Nox family were looking after us, you and SG1 were not around causing trouble, and I had shown the second group of visitors round the Mountain and dealt with that side of things. Knew they needed to go up to the Odyssey to get a feel of Space and the reality of it all. As Gibbs and Fornell family were going up I thought why not, and went with them … I'm glad I did and it showed me another side of life up there."
Noting Jack's hologram had gone still, Hank decided he would let the man worry for a moment and with a soft laugh commented easily. "I do wonder what you were thinking Jack, and if Vance knows what he is letting himself in for with Pride, Fornell and Gibbs being in one room or team together. Don't get me wrong I'm sure they are a very good threesome when working, but the back chat between the three of them reminds me of you and Jackson on a good day when it runs on for ages."
As Jack stayed silent, Sam trying hard to quell her giggles at that picture, couldn't help asking. "Who won?"
"Gibbs. But Fornell likes to niggle him, like an itch that will not let go and Pride goes for the long game so who knows who wins in the end. They've all been helping Gibbs with his boat, so they must get along and that banter it is just them letting of tension of the what they've been finding out, and being in the Mountain." Pausing for a moment to get his thoughts together Hank admitted. "We also had two members of the Nox family with us, thought that was fair as they were looking after the Earth for us. They are amazing and so are their musical instruments, they produced a couple which were like pan pipes."
While listening, Jack was reasoning with himself, the Raven would have checked with the Odyssey, that things were alright at SGC, because Hank had suddenly left with a group. It would have been Colonel to Colonel without Hank finding out about his secret in orbit round Earth, and from his friend's attitude things were okay, and relaxed. Knowing the group Hank went up with, Jack couldn't stop his soft chuckle and the image now in his mind that made him butt in easily. "So, Pride and daughter were on the piano, Emily Fornell and Abigail Borin shared the drum kit, with either on Gibbs or Fornell on the Nox's pan pipes or other wind instruments that are up there. Together they played jazzed up harmony of anything that goes, and sounded good. Did you join in with the guitar Hank?"
"I'm pleased to say I didn't get asked. I'm told it was a sight to see and hear, with Gibbs and Fornell on the Nox's pan pipes." Hank answered easily, before, keeping his eyes on Jack's hologram, changed his tone to his soft dangerous edged one, that would alert his friend to expect trouble as he added. "Unfortunately Jack, just as they were settling into their stride, I was called away to talk to Colonel Fisherman of the Hrafana or Raven, a simulator spaceship with a credited crew and unable to move from the Alpha Site. But is in fact, a fully stocked and commissioned spaceship that is a cloaked orbit around Earth ready to retrieve people or defend.."
And was interrupted by Jack's very concerned exclamation. "Oh Crap!" and immediate question. "Mark and family alright? Because you obviously are, and the Raven wouldn't have shown themselves unless it needed to retrieve that family."
Seeing Sam's hologram go from smiling to shock and worry, Hank immediately assured her. "Sam, they are all fine. I wouldn't be at all surprised if your niece and nephew, even Mark and his wife, are trying to get Colonel Fisherman to take them to Alpha site for a break as they can not return home just yet. They soon got over the shock of it all once they saw Earth from Space and heard some of the stories. Mark asked we pass on a message to you Sam, to say he is amazed and proud at what his little sister has been getting up to. Also they are looking forward to a family meeting."
Feeling relieved, Hank saw Sam's hologram nod, then start to smile as she looked at him and asked. "What happened?"
Nodding his acknowledgement to Sam, but now knowing what his friend had been through and seeing how still his hologram was, Hank reassured him. "I understand why you kept it all a secret, Jack, just amazed how you managed to do it. Don't worry it will stay a simulator on the books and the trip etc like everything else is off all records, and when you get back to Earth, we will chat to make sure it stays that way in the future, a visit from me to you or a private long distant twig call. Also, I can now understand why you left the mountain when and in the way you did." Then paused for a moment before checking anxiously. "Is Sam alright? Because if she is not careful she'll fall off my desk." he added hoping it would break the tensions Sam and Jack must be going through.
Sam had been trying very hard to control her giggles, … the picture of Gibbs and Fornell playing the pan pipes together, knowing what those two were like at the best of times, mixing in with the relief her family were alright, knowing Hank would have come straight out with it in private if they were not, were bad enough. But Hank's last comment about her falling off the table broke her control, and now the tears started to roll down her cheeks and she had absolutely no hope of stopping her giggles. The others round the table weren't helping as they were smiling, with her rather than at her problem, Jack included when he commented with a sigh. "Hank that didn't help. You've just sent her into even more giggles and tears. You know she's sitting in a chair here so can not fall and holograms don't feel anything anyway." Taking a breath to help him stay the right side of serious in the hope of helping Sam to calm down, he added. "To be honest with you, we are both very very relieved we don't have to read Mark into the programme as I thought we would. Not sure he would have believed us if we tried. Hang on a moment." He finished quickly.
Turning his full attention to Sam, who was still giggling and wiping her eyes, with the odd hiccup occurring, Jack said quietly, but firmly. "Take a breath, close your eyes and think of U Sang and you will be fine, General." hoping the last word would help her remember where she was, before turning his attention back to Hank's worried looking hologram and adding confidently. "Sam will be fine, and she will hear everything if you carry on."
Trusting Jack, and seeing the Sam on his desk starting to calm down, Hank said. "Okay, back to what happened. Early evening our time, and I'm going to call it their 'social media' bandwidth, the Raven found that three groups of trouble makers were out and about. One on the far side of town that was taking up most of the police's attention and the other two each end of the road Mark lives on, and looking as though they could meet outside Mark's house or close to it. Realising the police wouldn't arrive in time to stop the two rowdy groups from meeting and clashing, might have eyes in the sky on them and possibly get a few in the aftermath. Colonel Fisherman knew they couldn't beam their officers down to help the police without causing problems or risk putting our people down and drive the family to safety through either mob. As beaming down and up would take seconds, and be invisible, he decided to inform the Nox, Odyssey and myself what he planned to do and we agreed his actions. Needing to keep Raven's action undercover I informed our officer in NORAD there was going to action between the Nox, Odyssey and Earth and not to worry about it."
Seeing Jack's nod that he understood it all, and the others were listening, Hank continued. "The Raven immediately sent down five officers into Mark's back garden, which is very secluded, the front is open plan and visible to all so couldn't be used. If the groups met and hugged then left the area, then Mark and family would have been beamed back into their house without anyone outside realising what had happened. Two officers were going to stay in the back garden with a drone up in the sky filming the two groups, and would land if the helicopter arrived. They could also be used as back up in the house if needed. Male and female officers, known as Mr and Mrs Smith would be house sitting while Mark and family were away for a few days. The couple's cover jobs, should they need to interact with the police or neighbours, was friends of the family and military police officers on leave. The fifth officer would explain what action was needed to the family and take them to the Raven or if they refused make sure they were kept safe.
"Luckily, Mark answered the kitchen door and the officer passed on the recognised code word, Jack had given both sides for either to use should the family be in deadly danger, and action was needed. Mark, of course, had a phone number to call and wouldn't know anything about the Raven unless circumstances demanded it. I'm glad to say Mark reacted immediately, telling the family to grab their prepared emergency go bags, that Jack had told them to store, and, to the kids' disappointment, take their homework with them and dress to leave the house. They of course expected to go round the side of the house to the front and drive off, leaving the introduced Mr and Mrs Smith, who knew where everything was to house sit.
"Taking the family into the back garden, the officer in charge said. "Mark you know your sister is in the Space programme." As Mark nodded yes, the kids started to giggle and his wife smiled, then the officer added. "Take a breath and hold onto your bags as we will be going upwards." Amazingly they all took a breath and held onto their bags, and without question looked upwards, obviously expecting a helicopter to appear, instead the final command was instantly given. "Family ready to go." And the next moment they were on the Raven, wide eyed with shock and amazement.
"Back on Earth, the groups met and clashed outside Mark's house, and while some were damaging other properties and the police managed to make a few arrests. According to the drone, in the early stages of the two groups meeting, four people silently broke off from the mob, two from each side and entered Mark's house. Mr and Mrs Smith stayed silent long enough to find out and record that the family were the target, while the two officers in the garden silently entered by the rear entrance to back them up. Then with weapons drawn and voices raised they showed themselves and arrested the four men, before handing them over to the local police officers and explaining they didn't want any publicity as they were on leave. The house was made secure and photos of the damage taken for insurance purposes and sent up to Mark so he knows what is going on.
"As we needed to find out what was really going on, and our NCIS and security teams were still busy elsewhere, I decided to let Fornell and Pride enjoy doing what they are good at, and Gibbs time outside the Mountain. They will also have to do the paper work, and as I said earlier, I get some peace and quiet. Yes, I do know it will not last long and I'm not sure how long the group will stay together after that. Emily and Abigail are here, and of course the Nox and Odyssey are on hand. So far it looks like the dying gasps of your investigation Jack, who gathered a couple of rent a mobs, who just wanted to make trouble and unknowingly provided cover for the four men. Their backgrounds are being dug into and it is all being kept under wraps."
Checking that Sam was alright and feeling she was, Jack decided what action could be taken and explained. "Thank you for that Hank, pass on our thanks to the three as well as Raven's crew. They will stay in orbit till either I or Sam dismiss them, we will do that once we get to the cabin. I think it might be wise if the family stay out of town for a few days. If their cover still holds, Mr and Mrs Smith could stay in the house, then Mark and family return when the dust has settled. We should be back in three days your time. I know Mark and family will need to see that Sam is okay, so she could meet them in the town near the cabin. They can stay off site and I'll keep out the way or now they know some of the truth and if the cabins are available they can visit the site and we have a family get together there. The day after we arrive back is the earliest time, I don't want them on site when we arrive. I will leave you to chat with them, then you and Cameron decide which way to play this as he will be going to the cabin ahead of us. "
"Thanks for that Jack." Hank answered with a sigh, knowing he would probably have to explain 'glitter Jack' to the family, a short version whatever that would be, at least the children were old enough to know how important their silence would be. Then finished. "I think that is everything Jack, so I will sign out. John and Richard, we will be in contact once all your guests have departed. Sam and Jack, have a good trip home."
Seeing nods from the hologram people in front of him, Hank picked up the twig on his desk, twisted it, then put it back on the table and watched all the holograms disappear into it. With the silence and emptiness of his office gathering around him, and now understanding everything that had happened to Jack in DC before his trip to Atlantis, he knew his friend was going to find it difficult sending the team on their way, without that feeling of loss and loneliness returning, and said quietly."Good luck Jack. You know you will see them again." Even though his friend could not hear him, and sighed before starting to run through what he needed to do next, knowing peace and quiet never lasted, which was confirmed by the knock on his door.

Back in the Mess room on Atlantis, the privacy forcefield and Hank's hologram disappeared into the twig on the table, and the group looked at each other as they adjusted to everything and what needed to happen next. After a moment or two knowing he couldn't put it off any longer and guarding his own feelings Jack sighed, before checking and asking. "Right. Sam you okay?"
"Think so." she answered with a slight smile, as she was feeling better but didn't want to explain it all, glancing at Richard, then back at Jack, she gave a slight shake of her head as she commented. "The Raven, a spaceship simulator with a teaching crew and specially picked students for courses. You two are so devious!" and smiled brightly as she saw the two men concerned, nod with contented looks, making her fleetingly wonder what else they'd been up too or what John and Richard may get up to in the future. Then turned on her really beaming smile at Jack as she added. "I'm guessing we will have company at the Waterfall site, sooner than later. So that should be interesting." And was not surprised to see and hear his exaggerated sigh to that idea, while sensing and seeing his total support and understanding in his eyes. That visit was going to be so much fun, especially if Mark was really on board with the situation, and knowing she hadn't actually talked to U Sang to calm herself just now, she couldn't help asking. "NightOwl do the same thing with you?"
Glad Sam was back on track, Jack gave a gentle laugh and pointed out. "She doesn't like purring." Sam shook her head at his tease, and let him carry on, so she could 'drink in' his gentle support for her. "It is just drawing up the memory that does it. You know, the normal meditation act of going to a calming picture, rather than actually contacting U Sang or NightOwl." Turning serious, Jack looked round the group then back at her adding. "Sam you've got bits and pieces to do with John and Richard before we go, so do that now, and I'll meet you in their Gate room, in three quarters of an hour."
As they all agreed it was time to move, they got up, with Sam and Jack putting on their 'go' bags, to make sure they stayed with them, and started walking out of the Mess room. Passing Daniel's group, Jack, wanting to head off any awkward questions, got in first saying. "Sam is fine. We've just been told Mark and family have been read into the programme so that is one job off the list, and a couple of our friends were playing pan pipes of all things. Gate room in three quarters of an hour with everything you travelled with, with you." then added. "Daniel do not open any of your books, because they itch as the pages turn." to make sure there wasn't any verbal comeback from his friend he immediately carried on. "Travel light regarding supplies. Don't take all the coffee, and you Vala, no shiny things or large amounts of food. Teal'c, I suggest you check in with the chef and ask for their ice cream recipe rather than having pots of melted mess when you get back home. Cam you need to see Sam first, she'll be with General Shepard in their office and you will be going through the Gate later and I'll give you a confidential note for you and General Landry."
Seeing Cam's silent nod of acceptance, Jack paused for a moment as he looked at the last couple in the group, knowing and feeling this was going to be difficult for them as it was for him and took a silent breath before adding gently but firmly. "We need to talk and you know the timing. Daniel's group will be going first." Seeing Cassie's and Jon's understanding nods back, Jack started to walk briskly out of the Mess room, noting that Sam, Richard and John were ahead of him and there was an officer accompanying him. 'Probably to make sure he wouldn't get lost or disappear on them, he thought to himself. 'Which was fine, because that would mean he'dbe left alone on the walk to the Gate room and hoped when he got there he would have the peace and quiet he needed to settle his mind and emotions. Once he'd written out those orders of course.' and carried on walking with a small nod of acknowledgement to the officer beside him.
