And a mega happy ending!

Epilogue

A year and a half had passed since the tragic accident that claimed the life of Mr. Wickham, and in that time, much had changed for the sisters. Lydia, after completing her official period of mourning, had married Mr. Edward Denny in a small, intimate ceremony. The love and devotion between the couple was clear to all who saw them together, their happiness a balm to the wounds of the past.

With some financing from the Master of Pemberley and the support of Lydia's doting husband, Lydia had opened up her shop, Mrs. Denny's Mended Heart Modiste, in Lambton. Kitty often lent a hand, mending hems and lacing stays, while Lydia worked her magic with needle and thread, bringing each dress to life with a dazzling array of silks and lace.

"I was given a second chance," Lydia would say, if pressed. "And I mean to seize it."

And seize it Lydia did. Her shop thrived, and Kitty marveled at how her sister had blossomed from naive bride to miserable wife to merry widow. Many of her workers were young women with troubled pasts, some 'widowed', claiming to come from villages too far away to check their stories. Not that either Lydia or Kitty had any intention of investigating. Lydia employed as many as she could, and if one stole from the shop, she would give them a single warning before being sent on their way.

All in all, Kitty felt things had turned out rather well.

As Kitty sorted through a basket of lace trim, her attention was drawn to a young girl of seventeen, her dark hair pulled back in a neat bun. The girl, named Sarah, kept her arms carefully covered, but Kitty had glimpsed the scars that marred her skin, and though Kitty had never pried, she had formed her own conclusions about the girl's past.

Sarah's hands, ungloved, moved deftly over the cloth, her fingers steady and practiced as on the other side of the shop, she and Lydia spoke in low voices.

"I am not sure yet," Lydia demurred, her hand fluttering to her stomach.

Curiosity piqued, Kitty set down the lace and moved closer to her sister. "Not sure about what?" she asked, her brow furrowed.

Sarah grinned, her eyes glittering with mischief. "Oh, our Mrs. Denny may soon have something to share with Mr. Denny," she said, giving Kitty a wink.

Realization dawned on Kitty, and she clapped her hands together in delight. "You are!" she exclaimed, her voice rising with excitement. "Lydia, you are with child!"

Lydia held up a hand, a smile playing at the corners of her lips. "I need to wait for the quickening to be sure," she said, her tone cautious but hopeful. "It is still early days, and I do not want to get my hopes up."

Kitty reached out, grasping her sister's hands in her own. "Oh, Lydia, this is wonderful news! I am so happy for you and Mr. Denny. You both deserve all the joy in the world."

Lydia's eyes glistened with unshed tears, and she squeezed Kitty's hands in return. "Thank you, Kitty. I never thought I could be this happy, not after everything that happened. But Edward... he has been my rock, my saving grace. I do not know what I would do without him."

He is a good man," Kitty agreed. "And an excellent father to your girls."

Lydia's smile widened at the mention of her daughters, who were spending the day with their Aunt and Uncle Darcy and their daughter, Helena, at Pemberley. "Amelia and Eugenia are my world," she said. "And they adore Edward. He has been so patient with them, so understanding of their fears and doubts."

Then, Lydia's breath caught, and she dropped her palm to her belly, her eyes widening in surprise. "Oh!" she breathed. "Kitty, I- I just felt the baby move."

Kitty wrapped her arms around her sister. "Oh, Lydia," she whispered. "That is wonderful. Truly wonderful!"

Sarah, who had been watching the exchange with a knowing smile, stepped forward and laid a hand on Lydia's shoulder. "Congratulations, Mrs. Denny," she said, her voice warm with affection. "Your little one is already making their presence known."

At that moment, the bell over the shop door jangled as the door swung open and Mr. Denny came rushing in, a box of baked goods clutched in his hands. The sweet, yeasty aroma of fresh bread wafted through the air, mixing with the smell of sugar and spices. "Lydia, my love!" Mr. Denny called out, his voice filled with excitement that seemed to bubble up from his very core. "I found those sweet buns you've been craving!"

"Oh, Edward!" Lydia hurried to her husband's side, her skirts swishing around her ankles. Taking the box from Mr. Denny's hands, she rose to her toes and pulled him down for a tender, lingering kiss. Mr. Denny's eyes widened in surprise, but then crinkled at the corners as he smiled against Lydia's lips. He wrapped his arms around his wife's waist, pulling her close.

"What was that for?" he asked when they parted, his voice low and warm.

As Lydia pulled back from the kiss, she took Mr. Denny's hand and placed it on her stomach. "Mr. Denny," Lydia said, her voice trembling with emotion, "it seems Amelia and Eugenia will soon have a little brother. Or sister."

For a moment, Mr. Denny stood frozen, his eyes wide with shock. Kitty held her breath, wondering how he would react. Then, with a whoop of joy that made Kitty jump, Mr. Denny swept Lydia into his arms and twirled her around in a circle. His face was lit up with boyish delight, and Lydia giggled as she clung to his shoulders.

Laughter filled the shop as the couple celebrated their wonderful news.

As Mr. Denny set Lydia back on her feet, his expression grew serious. He cupped Lydia's face. "You must sit, my dear," he insisted, guiding her towards a cushioned chair in the corner. "Rest, and let me take care of everything. I will not have you overexerting yourself, not in your condition."

Kitty watched with a fond smile as Mr. Denny continued to fuss over Lydia, insisting she put her feet up and rest.

"You do not need to fuss, Edward," Lydia said, her voice warm with amusement. "I am not an invalid. I am merely expecting."

"I will not have you or our child in any danger." Mr. Denny turned to Kitty, his eyes alight with barely contained elation. "I can scarcely believe it! A child - a beautiful new life to cherish and love. I am the happiest of men!"

His infectious joy drew an answering grin from Kitty. "I am thrilled for you both, Mr. Denny. Lydia could not ask for a more devoted husband and father for her children."

Lydia reached out to take her husband's hand, twining their fingers together.

Sarah, attending to her mending nearby, piped up with a mischievous grin, "Shall we start stitching baby clothes, then? Bonnets and booties and tiny gowns?"

"Oh yes!" Kitty clasped her hands together in delight. "Only the finest for our little niece or nephew!"

Lydia laughed, shaking her head at their eager plans. "You will spoil this child rotten before they even draw breath!"

"As well we should," Mr. Denny said, pressing a kiss to his wife's knuckles. "The child of my beloved will want for nothing."

As talk turned to nurseries and names, Kitty basked in the warm glow of familial love and hope for the future. The past might hold threads frayed, tangled, and broken, but the future stitched together ahead of them with love and joy, a story waiting to unfold.
