Chapter 26: Arrival at Hollow Bastion
With Sora, Donald, Goofy and Knuckles playing catch up from Traverse Town; Sonic Tails had traveled through the oceans between worlds. The two best friends had arrived at the world of Hollow Bastion, Maleficent's Domain and a place described to Tails as 'Heartless Central' by Cid. Tails had piloted Sonic to this world due to King's Mickey's warning back at Merlin's to stop the witches' schemes. The duo knew that time was not on their side to stop the evil fairy's plans.
As Sonic and Tails departed the now landed Gummi Ship, they saw the enormous castle of this world before them, its ominous silhouette dominating the skyline of Hollow Bastion. The two heroes from Mobius were surrounded by sheer cliffs of cascading water, the reverse-winding waterfalls added an otherworldly touch to the mysterious atmosphere. Sonic, in his imposing Werehog form, and Tails, ever-curious and resourceful, stood at the bottom of the falls, looking around in awe at this spectacle.
The daylight bathed the scene in an eerie glow, casting strange shadows upon the architectural marvels that adorned Hollow Bastion. Towers and spires spiraled towards the heavens from the castle, intricate designs etched into its surface. The air hummed with an enigmatic energy as the duo took in the surreal surroundings. Sonic's green eyes gazed in awe at the surreal phenomenon, reflecting the mesmerizing play of liquid defiance. The Werehog's senses were greatly intensifying, knowing that the Heartless would be here soon to try and stop the duo from saving the day.
Tails on the other hand, with his twin tails twitching with excitement, couldn't help but marvel at the reversing waterfalls. Great torrents of water defied gravity, flowing upwards in a mesmerizing display. The air was thick with the sound of rushing water, creating a symphony of nature's magic. The young fox's eyes widened with fascination, his scientific mind already buzzing with theories.
"Sonic, have you ever seen anything like this?" Tails exclaimed, his enthusiasm evident in his voice.
Sonic, his eyes now fixed on the towering castle, nodded with a hint of solemnity.
"It's a weird place, Tails," Sonic replied. "But we're not here for sightseeing. We've got a job to do."
As Sonic spoke, the air seemed to grow heavier, laden with the sense of urgency. The bubbles and boulders suspended in mid-air added to the surreal ambiance, making Hollow Bastion feel like a dreamscape gone awry.
"Maleficent's inside that castle, and we can't let her wreak havoc," The Werehog declared, taking a step forward, determination etched across his face. "Sora, Donald, and Goofy will catch up with us soon, but we can't afford to waste time waiting for them."
Tails, torn between scientific curiosity and the impending mission, nodded in agreement with his friend.
"Right, Sonic," Tails retorted. "Let's focus on the task at hand. We can figure out the mysteries of this place later."
With a nod of understanding between the dynamic duo, Sonic Tails set forth towards the looming castle of this world. The ascent was no simple task, yet the two Mobians moved with the precision and synergy of a well-practiced team. Sonic's Werehog form, with its elongated, stretchy arms, proved to be a valuable asset in navigating the suspended boulders that dotted their path. With a focused determination, he reached out, his arms effortlessly wrapping around the massive rocks as he propelled himself upward.
Tails, the whir of his twin tails cutting through the air, gracefully soared alongside Sonic. Using his unique ability to harness his tails as propellers, he effortlessly maintained pace with the ascending Werehog. The two moved in tandem, a symphony of motion against the backdrop of the waterfalls and the looming castle of Hollow Bastion.
Sonic's keen eyes scanned the surroundings as he climbed. The pools of water below seemed like distant mirrors reflecting the strange beauty of the world they traversed. He knew that losing focus could lead to a perilous fall, a plunge into the unknown depths that awaited beneath them. Each swing, each grab, required precision and timing.
The towering castle loomed ever closer, its grandeur becoming more apparent with each passing moment. As Sonic and Tails ascended, the architecture revealed intricate details—carvings that told tales of forgotten lore, symbols that hinted at the magical history of Hollow Bastion. It was a mesmerizing sight, but the urgency of their mission kept Sonic's attention squarely on the climb.
Tails, ever the cautious companion, maintained a vigilant eye on Sonic. He adjusted his flight path to stay close, offering support and guidance when needed. The teamwork between the two was seamless, a testament to their years of friendship and countless adventures.
The air around them seemed charged with an otherworldly energy, as if the very atmosphere of Hollow Bastion was alive with mystical forces. Sonic's enhanced strength, a gift from his Werehog form, made each ascent look almost effortless, but the risk was ever-present. One wrong move, a miscalculation in the swing, and they could find themselves plummeting into the unknown abyss below.
"One wrong move, Tails, and I'm taking a nosedive into the great unknown," Sonic remarked, eyeing the vastness below.
"H2O in your normal form is bad enough," Tails quipped, glancing down, as he flew nearby. "In your Werehog form, I dread to think how you'd get on."
With a final swing and a leap, Sonic landed on the last floating boulder, reaching the summit. Tails gracefully touched down beside him, their eyes scanning the scene before them—a broken bridge leading to the distant castle of Hollow Bastion. Sonic scratched his head, a quizzical expression on his face.
"Now what?" Sonic questioned, surveying the impassable gap.
"I could probably lift you and fly us over. But your Werehog form might be a bit too much," Tails suggested, brainstorming ideas to solve their problem.
Just as the duo contemplated their next move, a distant shimmer caught their attention. From the horizon, a golden platform emerged, gliding towards them. Sonic and Tails exchanged glances, a bemused smirk crossing Sonic's face.
"How convenient," Sonic remarked with a chuckle.
Tails shrugged, a playful smirk crossing his lips, "Guess Hollow Bastion has its ways of helping us out. Let's not question it."
"Agreed," Sonic replied. "Come on, let's jump on."
The golden platform hovered before them, and with a synchronized nod, Sonic and Tails leaped onto it. The moment their feet touched the magical surface, it whisked them away, gliding effortlessly towards the distant castle.
As they soared through the air, the broken bridge and the perilous climb below became a distant memory. The landscape of Hollow Bastion unfolded before them, revealing its secrets and wonders. The castle, now closer than ever, stood as a symbol of the challenges that lay ahead.
The reverse-winding waterfalls continued their dance below, the rhythmic cascade of water serving as a backdrop to the dynamic duo's fantastical journey through this mystical realm. As they approached the castle, the air crackled with energy, and the fate of Hollow Bastion hung in the balance.
"That castle is huge!" Tails remarked, seeing the once towering structure draw near.
"Looks like we have a lot of ground to cover pal," Sonic added.
The golden platform gently descended near a large bronze gate adorned with intricate spiral markings, forming a heart at its center. Sonic and Tails surveyed the area, taking in the enormity of the castle and the platforms that crisscrossed it like a labyrinth.
"This place looks like a real maze," Sonic observed, his eyes scanning the towering structure.
Tails nodded in agreement but motioned towards the bronze gate, "I think we should enter there and start our search for the missing Princesses."
Sonic agreed, his mind already racing with the possibilities of what lay beyond the mysterious gate.
"A good place to start. Let's check it out!" Sonic declared in agreement.
Before they could approach the gate, the air around them shifted, and three Darkball Heartless materialized before them. Sonic's eyes narrowed, his Werehog instincts kicking in.
"Stand back, Tails. I've got this," Sonic said, stepping forward to protect his friend.
With a burst of speed, Sonic dashed toward the Darkball Heartless, his Werehog abilities in full display. The spherical Heartless, with their pitch-black body streaked with dark blue, seemed to quiver as Sonic approached. Their glowing yellow eyes fixated on the blue blur charging toward it.
The Werehog's stretchy arms extended, grabbing and pummeling one Darkball with ease. He moved with a fluidity that defied the other Heartless' attempts to strike back. Sonic's movements were a dance of power and precision, each punch sending ripples through the air.
Tails marveled at Sonic's prowess, his eyes following the agile blur as he effortlessly dodged the attacks of the three Darkball Heartless. Sonic's Werehog form proved to be a formidable force, his enhanced strength and reflexes making short work of the enemies that dared to stand in their way.
The battle unfolded with a symphony of movements—quick strikes, acrobatic dodges, and powerful slams. Sonic's Werehog form was a force to be reckoned with, and the Darkball Heartless found themselves outmatched against the blue hedgehog's onslaught.
As the last Darkball crumbled into darkness, Sonic turned to Tails with a confident grin.
"Piece of cake," Sonic said.
Tails chuckled, relieved that the threat had been neutralized, "Nice work, Sonic. Let's keep moving. The answers we seek might be beyond that gate."
With the defeated Heartless fading into the ethereal shadows, Sonic and Tails made their way towards the large bronze gate, ready to unravel the mysteries that awaited them within the heart of Hollow Bastion's colossal castle.
"Open sesame!" Sonic quipped, as they stood in front of the imposing and large gate.
With a sudden and low groan, the gate started to creak open. The two heroes stepped through the threshold into a vast, two-level Entrance Hall.
The floor beneath them was a striking blue marble, adding an air of elegance to the mysterious surroundings. In front of them, a water feature captured their attention—water cascading from what appeared to be a dragon's mouth. The liquid flowed with an almost ethereal quality, adding to the enigmatic atmosphere of the hall.
To either side of the water feature, two stairways ascended, leading to the second level of the entrance hall. Massive pillars, adorned with intricate carvings, held the room aloft. The entire space exuded an eerie ambiance, a combination of grandeur and an unsettling sense of mystery.
"Incredible craftsmanship," Tails murmured, his eyes scanning the room's architectural wonders before them.
Sonic, his keen senses attuned to the energies around him, couldn't shake the feeling that something more profound was at play.
"This place gives me the creeps," Sonic remarked, his gaze scanning the vastness of the Entrance Hall.
"Yeah, there's an odd sense of mystery and darkness lingering here. We better stay on our guard," Tails replied in agreement with Sonic's assessment.
"Come on, let's go see where we can find the Princesses and that witch!" Sonic commanded, gesturing to the staircase nearby.
Before they could ascend the staircase to seek further answers, a voice echoed around them, a voice that sparked familiarity.
"My my, look who finally arrived."
Sonic and Tails turned in unison to locate the source of the voice, and from the shadows emerged none other than Rouge the Bat and Omega, the formidable robot.
"Rouge, Omega!" Tails greeted the duo, with a surprised expression.
"Hi, long time no see," Rouge remarked in a playful tone, flashing a mischievous smile.
"It has been a while, Rouge," Sonic replied in his deep Werehog voice.
"Sure has big blue, but why are you like that?" Rouge asked, pointing towards Sonic, trying to understand why Sonic looked different.
"Sonic is stuck in his Werehog form," Omega replied, addressing Sonic's appearance in his robotic tone.
"Yep," Sonic responded with a casual acknowledgement. "Long story, some dark magic, but I ain't got time to explain. We gotta find those Princesses and stop Maleficent."
"Same as us, we were ordered to investigate by our Commander - we're waiting for his instructions."
Tails, his curiosity piqued, chimed in, "So, like a mission?"
Omega, in his characteristic robotic tone, clarified, "Affirmative: Operation Radiant Retrieval."
"Alright, spill. What's the lowdown on Operation Radiant Retrieval?" Sonic asked, turning to Rouge, eager to find out more.
Rouge, ever the mysterious bat, leaned in slightly to the Werehog.
"The Princesses are hostages and must be saved," she revealed.
Omega added his mechanical perspective, "Objective: Save Princesses, Neutralize and stop Maleficent from reaching Kingdom Hearts."
"Kingdom what?" Sonic remarked, momentarily perplexed.
Rouge let out an amused sigh, shooting Omega a glance. This was official G.U.N business, top secret.
"TMI, big guy."
"I apologize, Rouge," Omega apologized in a rare moment. But Sonic and Tails can be trusted. They are allies to G.U.N."
Tails, always seeking knowledge, pressed on for answers, "So, this Kingdom Hearts... what does G.U.N know about it?"
"Yeah, what exactly is it, anyway?" Sonic asked, scratching his head.
Rouge, with a thoughtful expression, began to explain, "G.U.N has been keeping tabs on this for a while. After finding a piece of Ansem's Report, one line stuck out."
"We found some reports too," Tails revealed, eager to share with the group. "Team Chaotix have been investigating on their side. But, they've been struggling with trying to understand what it all means."
"This Ansem guy is cryptic," Rouge admitted, looking at Tails. "Even our top analysts and Commander find his research baffling."
"What line stuck out that's so important?" Sonic asked, eager to move the conversation along.
Omega, the walking database, accessed his memory files with a loud declaration on the line that could be the key piece to this puzzle.
"According to Ansem's Report: 'Darkness, one must go through the doors of Kingdom Hearts, the place where the world's hearts connect.'"
As the robotic enforcer recited the crucial line, a hush fell over the group. The weight of those words reverberated through the grand Entrance Hall of Hollow Bastion. Sonic, Tails, Rouge, and Omega stood in silent contemplation, absorbing the profound implications of their mission. However it was the two tailed fox who broke the silence, his mind racing with possibilities.
"Doors of Kingdom Hearts... the place where the world's hearts connect. It sounds like a key to something immense," Tails said, analyzing the cryptic words carefully.
"Exactly," Rouge replied with a nod, a mixture of determination and concern reflecting in her eyes. "Kingdom Hearts holds a power that could reshape the fate of the worlds. G.U.N believes Maleficent aims to harness that power for her own dark purposes."
"Hold on a minute, guys," Sonic spoke, his voice laced with concern but intrigue.
"What's up, Sonic?" Tails asked, turning his attention to Sonic.
"Tails," Sonic began. "Remember what Mickey said to us back at Merlin's? He had to seal that door."
"Mickey?" Rouge interjected, intrigued by this name and turning to Omega for clarification.
Omega, ever the source of concise information, clarified, "King Mickey, Ruler of Disney Castle."
"Yes!" And he said something about sealing the door to darkness" Tails replied, connecting the dots.
"So if I'm right, Mickey is locking the door to darkness to stop Maleficent, meaning that door has to be this Kingdom Hearts? "Sonic exclaimed, putting the pieces together.
The revelation hung in the air as the heroes grappled with the interconnected threads of their mission. The ancient castle, the Princesses in peril, Maleficent's dark ambitions, and now the enigmatic Kingdom Hearts—all converging in a tangled web that demanded their attention.
Rouge, ever the pragmatist, broke the momentary silence of the group.
"Well, we've got a lot to untangle, but one thing's for sure: we need to find those Princesses, stop Maleficent, and understand the true nature of Kingdom Hearts."
Sonic, his eyes gleaming with determination, nodded in agreement.
"Agreed. Let's get moving," Sonic said with purpose.
"Intelligence suggests the Princesses are locked away deep in this castle," Omega revealed.
"That was what Alice must have seen when she was brought here," Tails added, remembering back to what Alice shared with him, Amy and the Chaotix back in Traverse Town.
"The clock's ticking, and we've got a date with destiny," Sonic remarked with fiery determination.
"Come on, guys - we'll give you the intel we have," Rouge said, readying to explain further to Sonic Tails as they kept the momentum going.
With a shared understanding, the group embarked on their mission through the grand Entrance Hall of Hollow Bastion. The ancient castle, shrouded in mystery, awaited their exploration. Each step echoed with purpose as Sonic, Tails, Rouge, and Omega moved forward, united by a common goal—to save the Princesses and stop Maleficent from reaching the elusive Kingdom Hearts.
Hollow Bastion held not only the fate of the Princesses but also the key to unlocking the mysteries of Kingdom Hearts. The clock was ticking, and the destiny of worlds hung in the balance. Sonic, Tails, Rouge, and Omega moved with purpose, their journey guided by the quest for answers and the determination to thwart Maleficent's malevolent plans. The grand castle, with its towering spires and ancient secrets, became the stage for a tale that would shape the very fabric of their intertwined destinies.
Meanwhile, back at the entrance of Hollow Bastion by the reversing waterfalls and the great floating bubbles and boulders that filled the air, a new group had arrived. This time, it was Sora, Donald, Goofy, and Knuckles, attempting to catch up with Sonic and Tails. The quartet ascended from their ship and landed on the rocky terrain below, gazing toward the steep climb that Sonic had previously endured, with the imposing castle standing in the distance.
"So, this is Maleficent's domain - Hollow Bastion," Knuckles commented, surveying the surroundings."
"Looks like it," Donald replied with a nod towards the echidna.
However, Sora seemed unusually focused. His gaze was fixed on the looming castle, and he appeared to be concentrating intensely. Knuckles, noticing Sora's demeanor, his purple eyes looked upon the Keyblade wielder with intrigue.
"What's up?" Knuckles asked.
Sora, without averting his gaze, replied, "I know this place." His eyes remained locked on the towering castle, a sense of familiarity washing over him.
His eyes traced the towering spires, the intricate architecture, and the ominous atmosphere that clung to Hollow Bastion. There was a sense of familiarity, as if the castle held a connection to him. Even though the chosen one had never been here before.
"Well, ain't that something," Goofy added. "What do ya remember, Sora?"
Sora shook his head, as if trying to bring forth memories from the recesses of his mind. The castle in the distance was surrounded in mystery to the teen. He couldn't have seen this before, or even heard of- but somehow, he felt like he'd been here before. But when, that was the question?
"I don't know why… But I feel this warmth inside, right here."
Sora touched his chest, as if trying to pinpoint the source of the inexplicable sensation. The warmth emanating from his heart wasn't painful; instead, it felt like a comforting embrace. However, when Sora's gaze fixated on the castle, the warmth seemed to intensify, as if responding to the mysterious allure of Hollow Bastion.
"So, what's the deal, Sora? You've got some connection to this place?" Knuckles asked, intrigued by this sensation Sora was feeling inside.
Sora looked up at the towering castle, the sense of warmth persisting within him.
"I can't explain it. It's like... a feeling of familiarity, but I know I've never been here before. It's like my heart recognizes this place."
"Hearts recognizing places now?" Donald said skeptically, crossing his arms. "You sure you're not just hungry or something?"
"Hey, I'm being serious!" Sora responded with determination.
Knuckles interjected, steering the conversation back to the mission.
"Serious or not, we have to get back to the task at hand. Maleficent is up there, so are Sonic and Tails." Knuckles said, gesturing to the castle in the distance. "I can also sense the shards of the Master Emerald are close by, somewhere."
As Knuckles spoke, his senses heightened. He walked to the edge of the rocky platform and looked down, surveying the waterways below. The reversing waterfalls and floating bubbles created a mesmerizing spectacle, but Knuckles' attention was focused on something deeper, something that resonated with the innate connection he had with the Master Emerald.
"The shards are close," Knuckles muttered to himself, his gaze scanning the intricate waterways. "The shards must be down in the water ways."
"Are you sure, Knuckles?" Questioned Goofy.
"Yeah, I can sense them calling out to me," Knuckles confirmed, giving a confident nod back to the King's Captain.
Before anyone could say anything else to Knuckles, a loud commotion echoed around the reversing waterfalls and the mysterious place. The sudden disturbance made Donald quack in surprise, but there were no Heartless in sight, nor any other people. Knuckles knew that the noise had to be investigated further, but he couldn't leave the shards behind, especially with the Heartless potentially lurking in the shadows. With a sense of urgency, The echidna looked towards Sora, Donald, and Goofy - ready to take charge of the situation.
"I'll handle the search for the Master Emerald shards," Knuckles said with authority. "You guys go check out what's causing that commotion. We can't afford any surprises in Maleficent's territory."
"Alright, Knuckles. We'll find out what's going on," Sora retorted in agreement. "Be careful down there, and catch up with us soon."
Knuckles acknowledged with a determined nod, "Got it. Don't let your guard down, and I'll join you once I've secured the shards."
With that, Knuckles leaped down to the waterways below, his focus on the mission to retrieve the scattered pieces of the Master Emerald. Sora turned to Donald and Goofy, a shared sense of curiosity in their expressions.
"Let's see what's causing that ruckus," Sora suggested, leading the trio towards the source of the commotion.
The trio made their way up the boulders to seek the commotion. Sora showed off his impressive jumping techniques, getting some serious airtime with each leap. With the floating boulders further away, Sora tapped into the power of NiGHTS and began to glide, with Donald and Goofy joining him. All that extra practice at Merlin's certainly helped them improve their flying abilities.
"Gawrsh, I'm glad we took the time to perfect our gliding, fellas," Goofy remarked.
Donald chimed in, "Yeah, Sonic could have also practiced. But he had to jump headfirst into this chaos without us."
As the heroes ascended from their glide and reached the next platform, there was a giant water bubble blocking their path. If they tried to glide around it, they would end up dropping down to the waterways below. However, seeing this obstacle and problem, Sora had an idea. The young man from the Destiny Islands summoned his Keyblade and pointed it towards the giant bubble in front of them.
"Deep Freeze!" Sora called out, commanding the magical powers in his arsenal.
With that command, the power of Blizzara shot out of the Cosmic Harmony Keyblade, freezing the water bubble into solid ice.
"That's using your head, Sora!" Goofy said with praise, looking towards the Keyblade wielder.
Sora grinned in response, while Donald shook his head with an amused expression that seemed to say, "Oh, brother."
The trio then jumped up onto the now frozen ice bubble and continued their ascent upwards. The enchanted landscape of Hollow Bastion unfolded beneath them, with reversing waterfalls, floating bubbles, and platforms creating a surreal and challenging path. The commotion they sought was becoming louder, driving their curiosity and determination.
As the heroes were heading upwards to the source of the commotion, the heart of the matter was unfolding between Riku and a mysterious figure, glowing with a green aura. Riku stood on a floating boulder, looking down at the being below.
"No vessel, no help from the Heartless... So tell me, how'd you get here?" Riku inquired, his voice echoing through the mystical surroundings.
The mysterious being, a silver anthropomorphic hedgehog with white fur on his chest surrounding his neck, gold eyes, and peach skin, stood firm. White gloves adorned with cyan circles, leading to golden bracelets, adorned his hands. His boots mirrored the same fashion, navy blue with a white stripe, cyan toes, and gray soles. A red gem gleamed in gold on each boot.
"I have no time for these games. The future is in ruins, thanks to your actions here in the past."
"Ah, so you're a time traveler, huh? No wonder you've put up a decent fight so far," Riku replied with arrogance and a sense of smugness.
"A fight?" The being said in anger. "Are you serious?!"
"You blame me and Maleficent for the state of your future? You might want to reconsider your accusations." Riku replied, meeting the being's frustration with a calm demeanor.
The silver hedgehog powered up his green aura once more, his frustration evident. His golden eyes were burning with raging fire because of Riku's words and attitude towards this situation.
"With Princess Elise abducted in this timeline and Mobius being swallowed by the darkness, my home, the future is in chaos," The time traveler explained, his voice dripping with anger. "I fight to restore the past and stop your schemes with Maleficent!"
"You can't stop us!" Shouted Riku in response.
In a burst of anger, the silver hedgehog launched himself towards Riku. However, Riku's nimble movements allowed him to dodge the attack, and he countered swiftly with his sword. The hit smacked the hedgehog back, and he landed on one knee, holding his stomach where he was struck.
Riku, with his Soul Eater sword in hand, was about to go in for the final strike on the time traveler, fueled by the intensity of their clash. However, a voice called out to stop the teen from lashing out.
"Riku, stop!"
Riku looked to see Sora, Donald, and Goofy across from him, next to the fallen silver hedgehog, who appeared majorly winded. However, the silver haired teen gave a smug grin, his eyes piercing toward Sora as he was about to reply to his once dearest friend.
"So, you finally made it," Riku said. "About time. I've been waiting for you. We've always been rivals, haven't we? You've always pushed me as I've always pushed you."
"Riku…?" Sora questioned, he knew this wasn't the Riku he knew. The darkness had truly taken hold of his heart.
"But it all ends here. There can't be two chosen ones," Riku revealed, with a faint smile.
"What are you talking about?" Sora remarked in disbelief.
"Let the Keyblade choose its true master!" Riku retorted, his voice dripping with darkness.
Riku reached out, and the Keyblade began to shake violently in Sora's grasp. The Keyblade seemed to resist, as if caught in a struggle between conflicting forces. It felt like a powerful magnetic pull, two opposing poles attracting each other. Suddenly, in a burst of light, the Keyblade vanished from Sora's possession.
In the blink of an eye, the Keyblade materialized in Riku's waiting hand. The transition was seamless, as if the weapon itself recognized its true master. The green aura surrounding the silver hedgehog flickered in surprise at the unexpected turn of events. The Keyblade's glow seemed to resonate with the darkness in Riku's heart, creating an aura that mirrored the struggles within.
"What!?" Donald shouted out, his feathers ruffled in shock.
Goofy and Sora were taken aback by this unexpected turn of events also, stepping back in disbelief.
"Maleficent was right. You don't have what it takes to save Kairi," Riku retorted to Sora, wielding the Keyblade with an air of cold confidence. "It's up to me. Only the Keyblade master can open the secret door... and change the world."
"But that's impossible. How did this happen? I'm the one who fought my way here with the Keyblade!" Sora shouted, still trying to process what just happened.
Riku, with a broad smile, admired the Keyblade now in his hand.
"You were just the delivery boy."
The revelation struck Sora like a lightning bolt, a sense of betrayal and confusion swirling within him. The Keyblade, a symbol of his journey and his connection to the worlds, had seemingly abandoned him. The trio found themselves at a crossroads, the dynamics of their group shifting in unforeseen ways.
Riku lowered the Keyblade and looked over to Sora, who was still in shock. Riku's voice cut through the heavy air.
"Sorry, your part is over now." In his free hand, a wooden sword materialized, and he added hurtfully, "Here, go play with this."
With a dismissive toss, Riku sent the wooden sword spinning through the air, landing with a clatter on the ground in front of the once chosen one by the Keyblade. Sora slumped, falling miserably to his hands and knees.
"No..." he whispered quietly, the weight of defeat settling upon him.
Donald exchanged a glance with Goofy, a silent understanding passing between them. The weight of their mission pressed heavily on their shoulders, and with a shared nod, they turned away from the fallen Sora.
"Let's go. We have to remember our mission," Donald stated, his voice carrying a sense of urgency.
Goofy hesitated, torn between loyalty to their fallen friend and the duty laid out by the King. He looked from Donald to Sora, heartbroken and defeated on the ground. The conflict played on Goofy's features as he wrestled with the decision at hand.
"Oh! Well, I know the King told us to follow the key and all... But…" Goofy trailed off, a momentary struggle evident in his eyes.
Donald began to walk away, and with a heavy sigh, Goofy reluctantly followed. Their steps paused for a moment as Donald turned back, his voice filled with remorse.
"Sora, sorry."
The pair left the fallen teen, now powerless without his Keyblade. Although compelled by their mission, the duo felt a pang of shock and guilt. The emotional turmoil reflected in their expressions as they left Sora behind.
Sora, still on his hands and knees, stared at the wooden sword before him. The world seemed to close in as he grappled with the weight of abandonment and the uncertainty of what lay ahead.
"What do I do? What am I supposed to do?" Sora thought to himself, anxiety rising as he contemplated the unforeseen twists of fate. "I don't have the Keyblade anymore. Sonic left me back in Traverse Town. Donald and Goofy went with Riku. I thought they were my friends?"
As the wind picked up on the platform, the silver being, who had risen to his feet, gave a low gasp of pain. Determination etched on his face, he attempted to walk it off, struggling against unseen wounds that weighed him down. Sora, observing the silent struggle, couldn't ignore the evident pain.
Moved by an unselfish impulse, Sora got to his feet and rushed over to the silver being. Despite the emotional turmoil within him, the genuine concern for another's well-being overrode his own sorrow. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a Hi-Potion, a small but potent cure that could mend wounds and restore vitality.
"Wait, you're hurt," Sora said, offering the Hi-Potion to the struggling silver hedgehog. "Please, take this."
The silver being looked to Sora, a mixture of surprise and gratitude in his golden eyes. He hesitated for a moment, then took the Hi-Potion from Sora's outstretched hand. The small act of kindness was a glimmer of humanity in the midst of their turbulent circumstances.
"Thanks," the silver hedgehog said, his voice revealing a hint of appreciation. He uncorked the potion and consumed it, the healing effects visibly taking hold. The pain that had etched lines of distress on his face began to ease.
Sora, despite the weight of his recent hardships, found solace in this simple act of compassion. The winds carried the echoes of their encounter, a brief interlude in the unfolding drama. The platform, once a witness to the clashes of destiny, now bore witness to a different kind of connection—a moment where empathy transcended the boundaries of conflict.
The silver hedgehog looked to Sora with intrigue, "Why...did you come here?" The silver hedgehog said softly. "I've come to fight for my home, the future." He sighed and looked over to the reversing waterfalls nearby, his golden eyes reflecting. "And though I'm here on my own from a distant time, I will fight for Mobius and save Princess Elise. I'm not leaving without her and I'm going to bring back Mobius from the depths of darkness."
Sora, inspired by the silver hedgehog's determination, looked from him to the wooden sword on the ground. Memories flooded back to the simple joys of playing with that wooden sword on the Destiny Islands. The silver being's words about home and saving it resonated deeply with Sora, rekindling the fire of purpose within him.
Picking up the wooden sword, Sora spoke with newfound resolve to his new silver ally.
"I'm fighting for my home too, and I'm not going to give up now. I came here to find someone very important to me."
The silver being turned to Sora, his golden eyes locking onto the determined teen. A small nod of acknowledgement passed between them as the silver being spoke with a hint of admiration.
"Your heart is strong. Even losing your weapon, you are defiant to keep going."
"I need to find my light," Sora responded, fueled by the unwavering resolve within him.
The silver being nodded again, a moment of shared understanding passing between them. Before he could continue, he paused, his golden eyes studying Sora intently.
"You're Sora, right?" The being asked.
"I am, but how do you know that?" Sora replied in surprise, taken back by the silver hedgehog knowing who he was.
"My name is Silver," the hedgehog said with a small smile. "I come from Mobius, 200 years in the future. There are tales of a boy named Sora around this time, wielding a certain key, well, was wielding one, I guess."
"Wow, that's amazing. Also, you're a hedgehog. Do you know Sonic?" Sora asked, his eyes widened in amazement by Silver's revelation.
Silver nodded, "Yes, we have crossed paths before, especially dealing with a future relative of Doctor Eggman."
"So, what brings you back all these years into the past?" Sora asked, curious as to why Silver was here at this point in time.
Silver, with a sense of gravity in his voice, began to explain to Sora, his golden eyes reflecting the weight of his words.
"Imagine going to sleep one day in your own world, and the next thing you know, it's gone. Vanished into the darkness," Silver explained. "When Mobius was engulfed by Darkness recently, the repercussions echoed through time. I woke up to find myself a refugee, a stranger in a world not my own, displaced by the destruction of my home."
The gravity of his words hung in the air, an unsettling reality that Sora couldn't help but absorb. He listened intently as Silver delved into the intricacies of his displacement, the sudden loss of his home, and the resulting state of being a refugee in a world not his own.
"There's a legend about the Princess of Heart," Silver continued, his gaze fixed on the distant reversing waterfalls. "It's said that the fate of their worlds hinges on them. Princess Elise III of Soleanna, from Mobius, 200 years in the past, is believed to be one such princess."
"This Princess Elise is a Princess of Heart?" Sora asked, looking in confusion towards the silver time traveler.
"Yes," Silver clarified. "It says that without her on my home world, Mobius fell to the darkness, as she was the one who fended off the Heartless with her light. Now from my understanding, Maleficent wants to use her and others for opening this door."
"The door," Sora pondered, before his eyes widened in realization. "Like the one Riku just mentioned?"
Silver nodded solemnly, "Yes, the door to all worlds."
The revelation connected the threads of their separate quests, weaving a narrative that intertwined the fate of Mobius, the enigmatic Princess Elise, and the ominous door that seemed to hold the key to unparalleled darkness. But also, there were other princesses taken by Maleficent, like Jasmine, and the ones Vector spoke about when Sora last saw Team Chaotix - Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora. Princesses from other worlds were also needed to open this door.
"We can't let Maleficent succeed," Sora declared, determination etched across his face. "We have to find these princesses and stop her plan."
Silver nodded in agreement, his golden eyes reflecting the resolve that mirrored Sora's own.
"Agreed. The fate of our worlds rests on our shoulders, and we must not falter."
Sora, feeling the warmth in his heart once more, could feel it squeeze tightly. He then gazed at the castle above, knowing this feeling was trying to direct him on where they needed to go.
"Come on, Silver. Let's go. Keyblade or not, I will find my friend and stop Maleficent," Sora declared with determination.
"Let's go and stop that witch and save not just the future, but the many worlds out there needing their light back," Silver replied.
As the duo set forth towards the looming castle of Hollow Bastion, the platform beneath them resonated with their shared purpose. The winds carried their resolve, and the reversing waterfalls seemed to echo their determination as they prepared to confront the challenges ahead. The alliance of Sora and Silver, born from the twists of fate and the convergence of worlds, became a beacon of hope in the face of impending darkness.
The platform, suspended in the mystical atmosphere of Hollow Bastion, served as a stage for the unfolding saga. The heroes, united by a common destiny, embarked on a journey that transcended the boundaries of time and space. The castle, with its mysterious architecture and foreboding presence, stood as a testament to the trials awaiting them.
