Chapter five:
Frisk swallows harshly only for her and Papyrus to turn to the way out of the kitchen.
There was a sound out there.
Papyrus cautiously walks to the entryway as silently as possible. He peeks out not realizing that Frisk had quietly followed.
Frisk manages to peek out as well. She almost gasps as she spots Sans.
Sans has on his blue hoodie with white fuzz lining the hood, his hoodie is unzipped showing black turtle neck shirt, he has a necklace which looks like two red rings of a target, black shorts with a white stripe on either outer side, blue and white sneakers, a large kitchen knife in one hand, his eye lights are out making his sockets all black, and drawn on black lines from his sockets down his face like his eyes are leaking black liquid.
Frisk and Papyrus duck back into the kitchen before they get spotted. They remain quiet to not be heard by Sans as they listen for if he is going to stay or leave. They both do find themselves hoping he'll stay, sure it puts them in danger however he won't be hurting anyone if he just stays here.
The couch lightly creaks as Sans sits down indicating he's going to stay for now.
Frisk looks to Papyrus wondering what their next move will be. She doubts that they can hide in the kitchen until Sans changes again.
There's only one way out of here so surely this isn't the safest spot to be right now.
Papyrus gestures her to follow him. Before heading towards one of the cabinets. He opens it showing it to be empty only for him to remove a fake wall in the back.
There is a small elevator there which they should be able to squeeze into.
Frisk is curious at why it's here however she doesn't say anything yet. She doesn't want to alert Sans that they're here. She crawls in first as Papyrus gestures for her to do so.
Papyrus clicks a button once she's inside getting it to move upwards.
The top seems to be inside of a closet which Frisk exits.
Frisk glances around with the main thing standing out to her being the race car bed. She wonders which of their rooms this happens to be.
Papyrus comes up as well and steps over to stand next to her. "Welcome to my room." He gestures around. "Sound proofed just in case of emergencies."
"What was that elevator for? For emergencies too?" Frisk inquires glancing to Papyrus who nods lowering his hand.
"Yup. I asked Alphys to make a few modifications for emergencies. Emergencies such as this. Now I can hide up here as needed and not worry about being heard."
"Alphys?" Frisk tilts her head.
"She's a scientist." Papyrus turns to Frisk clarifying for her. "I can introduce you guys later. For now let us just enjoy some time here and wait for Sans to change his personas."
Frisk nods turning away as she wonders if bringing the monsters to the surface really will be a good idea... At least if Sans can turn into something like this...
"Luckily for us these personas are not one of his usual ones." Papyrus lets out a breath clearly glad for it. "He has rarer ones but at least this isn't a usual occurrence."
"Wait. He has more than one of these!?" Frisk questions blinking at Papyrus.
"Yeah." Papyrus breathes out. "However do not fret. He has much more common ones that prefer to show up."
Frisk is still quite worried about this. She keeps her mouth shut about that part for now. "Do you think humans might be able to help him?" She inquires getting a blink from Papyrus. "I mean humans suffer from multiple personality disorder too. Not commonly but some do. Maybe there's humans that can help fix him."
Papyrus looks a little uncertain. "I mean maybe. However I can't say for sure. There hasn't really been a way found to help him here so we gave up. His condition is in a way that he sees the world differently with each persona. He even sees others as looking different. It may be tricky."
"Perhaps." Frisk tries to hide her concern about how deep this goes for Sans. "However it could be worth a try."
Papyrus thinks it over for a moment before letting out a breath. "We could try to get to the surface. Perhaps it could be worth a look. However I do love Sans even though he is constantly changing personas. And I have accepted him for how he is."
Frisk places an assuring hand on Papyrus's arm. "It is at least worth a try to help fix him. It'll be better for everyone and you'll have a more consistent Sans. That'll be good right?"
Papyrus turns away going to a computer. He turns it on clicking on some cameras. His refusal to answer that has Frisk a little worried. "We should be able to keep an eye on Sans with our hidden cameras. At least while he's in the house." He turns on the living room one showing Sans playing with the knife in his hand moving it around in his hand. "This persona thinks that he killed everyone. So once he's settled on the couch he shouldn't be going to hunt down anyone. Since he thinks no one is left here in the underground. However human we can keep a watch out for when his personas change. Then alert the underground if it is a safer persona."
"How do we alert everyone?" Frisk questions with confusion. She has decided it might be best to drop the other topic for now.
"Alphys set up an alert system. I can access it from my phone and computer. Sending out a message to everyone about if there is danger, or if it is safe." Papyrus explains keeping his eyes on the camera anxiously awaiting Sans changing persons.
"I see." Frisk turns to watch Sans as well.
Sans runs his finger along the not sharp part of the blade before tossing it into the air. He catches it by the handle before he sighs. "Damn. I wish that there was something to do. Or someone left behind to hunt down. It was so fun to slaughter them all." He chuckles darkly which makes Frisk feel shivers down her spine. "Well, Killer, you did this to yourself by killing everyone." He hums to himself throwing the knife into the air to see if he can keep catching it.
Frisk supposes that this persona is called Killer based on what Sans said.
Sans doesn't really do much other than fiddle with the knife. He doesn't show any sign of changing for two hours.
Frisk and Papyrus fill the time with some small talk.
Frisk was told of the story of the Royal children. One she can't help getting the feeling that its familiar somehow. She mentally shakes it off figuring that she must have heard a version of it in school.
After finally a good while Sans pauses with his persona shifting look before teleporting away.
"He's changing." Papyrus lets out a relieved breath. "Let's just hope that this one will be a safer one."
The two of them watch in hopefulness for Sans to reappear.
Finally Sans comes out into the living room as his Undertale persona.
Both Frisk and Papyrus let out breaths of relief and Papyrus sends out an all clear message to the underground.
"Help me get out of here." Frisk speaks to Papyrus who looks to her.
"I will. I may not be fully ready to make Sans's condition go away. However you don't deserve to be trapped here." Papyrus starts to head out. "Come on. Stay behind me. Sans doesn't need to know you were here. I don't want any teasing from him after the persona we just went through."
Frisk hides behind Papyrus supposing that she can do this for him. She follows him out which seems to be pretty easy as there is soft snores coming from the couch.
Papyrus grumbles a little however leaves Sans to nap as he takes Frisk outside.
Frisk comes out of hiding once out the front door.
Monsters are coming out starting to mingle making this place feel more like a town.
"We'll have to get to the king." Papyrus tells her. "Then you'll have to go past the barrier."
"What about you guys?" Frisk asks as they walk through town.
"Unless you can break the barrier we can't follow. I think I might be able to convince the king to let you past." Papyrus explains a little sadly.
"What about our plan to get Sans help on the surface?" Frisk slightly pleads and Papyrus shakes his head.
"I shouldn't have gone along at all. I should have remembered that there's no way for us to be able to even follow you out." Papyrus tells her sadly.
"There has to be a way. What about Alphys? Maybe she knows a way? I want to help you guys get free." Frisk hasn't found a monster that she doesn't like so far. She thinks that they are pretty much like anyone else in the world. She thinks that they deserve to be free after the injustice they've suffered.
"We could ask I suppose. It is the monsters dream to be on the surface." Papyrus agrees before looking to meet her gaze. "We'll make a stop there on our way. See what she says."
Frisk feels pretty happy to hear this and she has a feeling that if anyone knows surely it's a scientist. She turns to look the way to go as does Papyrus. She could swear that she sees a yellow flower from the corner of her eye. However when she looks there's nothing there. She turns away feeling some worry in her heart that the flower followed her out of the ruins.
Papyrus helps her through waterfall going through the puzzles easier with him there.
Suddenly there are heavy footsteps up above.
"Undyne." Papyrus breathes out and before Frisk can ask he shoves her into tall grass.
Frisk freezes swearing that she hears the footsteps just above her. She glances up spotting an armoured being staring down looking any movement in the grass with a spear out. She tries to keep her breathing quiet in fear.
Finally the armoured being backs off and heads off.
Papyrus comes into the tall grass and gently nudges Frisk out. "That was Undyne. She's the captain of the royal guard." He tells her letting out a breath as if relieved that they made it through. "I don't know if it's a good idea for you two to meet right now. I want to get her to understand that you're not a threat first."
"Okay." Frisk agrees knowing that she's not a fighter.
The two keep going for a bit longer only stopping when Undyne leaps into their path.
Papyrus steps forward only to not be able to get a word out.
"Papyrus." Undyne growls sounding so menacing it sends a chill down Frisks spine. "Step away from the human. Why are you helping her?"
"She wants to help us." Papyrus tries to plead and Undyne lets out a small sigh.
"You're too trusting Papyrus. Humans are dangerous. She's tricking you for her own gain." Undyne points her spear at Frisk. "Not to mention that this human will be the last soul we need to break the barrier. I can't let her just walk away."
Papyrus stares at Undyne silent for a moment. He finally speaks but in more of a quiet tone for Frisk. "Run. Head for the Hotlands. You can't miss the lab. Alphys will be in there." He instructs. "I'll catch up as soon as I can. Undyne won't hurt me." He races forward before Frisk can respond. He grabs onto Undyne.
"What are you doing!?" Undyne demands struggling and Frisk knows that this is her only opportunity. She doesn't move to hurt Papyrus as the other just holds her in a hug. So she won't be hurting him since she hasn't done so already.
Frisk runs off past them hearing Undyne shouting for her to get back there, followed by demands for Papyrus to release her. She keeps going until she has to slow down to catch her breath. She walks after that hoping Papyrus won't be in too much trouble for what he had done. She stops as tall grass rustles. She tenses in case it's a hostile enemy.
An armless dinosaur looking child leaps out instead. "Hey! You're a human aren't you?!" He asks excitedly. "You can call me MK! How about we travel together? I've never seen a human before! My parents won't worry about me yet."
Frisk supposes that she can't leave a child to wander alone; even though he knows the underground better than her. "Alright let's go."
So the two begin walking side by side.
"Hey. Have you met Undyne?" MK questions though he doesn't give Firsk a chance to respond. "What am I saying? Of course you haven't. You wouldn't be here if you did. She's an awesome warrior. She works so hard to protect the entire underground. I want to be a royal guard like her! Maybe even one day I'll be captain just like she is!" He keeps going so Frisk kind of tunes him out for now.
Frisk doesn't need to hear a constant stream of praises for Undyne right now.
The two enter tall grass after a while and slow to a stop at hearing footsteps coming.
Even MK goes silent finally.
Undyne enters the tall grass and stops right by where they are. She stares at them even though she can't see them in the grass. She raises a hand before shooting it into the grass.
MK's head is grabbed. He is lifted into the air to which he happily smiles to Undyne. He is lowered gently back down into the grass then Undyne leaves in a hurry.
Frisk leaves the grass with MK joining her a moment later.
"Whoa! Did you see that!? Undyne touched me!" MK bounces in excited happiness. "I'm never taking a bath ever again! Too bad you weren't where I was! You could have gotten that instead! Well too bad! It was mine! Yay!"
Frisk lightly shakes her head and the two continue moving forward.
MK follows along with her. "So. Did you come from the surface? How did you get here? What are you going to do now that you're here with us?" His questions keep going and Frisk decides to ignore them instead of trying to answer. He finally settles down so Frisk starts listening again. "Oh. What's your name? I guess I didn't get it."
"Frisk." Frisk tells MK who grins at her as their gazes look at each other.
"Nice to meet you Frisk!" MK almost chirps in his happiness.
The two pause as the area up ahead is rainy.
"I know where some umbrellas are!" MK announces before he quickly leads her to them as she almost has to run after him. He looks to the spare umbrellas left there. "Why don't you pick a color?" He offers so Frisk looks at the options.
Frisk picks a red one opening it. She gestures MK under so the other stands next to her. She leads him into the rain walking along the area together.
MK kicks at the puddles giggling happily to himself.
Frisk doesn't stop finding joy in his joy. She isn't sure why though it could be the childish fun he's having. She would join if her shoes were better made for it. She doesn't want to be walking with soaked feet if she doesn't have to.
The two make it through a good ways, even putting the umbrella away after making it out of that area, pausing at a ledge.
MK heads over leaning close to the wall of the ledge. "Climb up. I know a way around. It's a bit complicated so it'll be easier for you to just go up." He tells her so Frisk carefully climbs up him trying to not hurt him.
Frisk climbs over the ledge and looks down at MK over the edge.
MK smiles up at her before hurrying away. He trips as he does so falling onto his face. He gets up easily and keeps going.
Frisk moves away from the edge turning to look to the way ahead. She lets out a breath and begins walking. She turns hearing hurried footsteps only to see Undyne. She gasps and starts running. She can hear the other gaining on her.
"Undyne!" Papyrus calls out and when Frisk glances back he leaps out momentarily making her pause. His distraction buys Frisk enough time to get ahead a little.
Frisk soon enough hears Undyne coming for her once more. She keeps running just hoping that she'll make it out.
Spears are thrown all around her making her have to zipzag to avoid them.
Frisk doesn't look back this time. She skids to a stop as Undyne leaps over her head to land in her way.
Undyne has her spear at the ready.
Frisk notices a way through by going between Undynes legs. She runs towards the other with her heart pounding. She skids under as Undyne jabs a spear at her. She manages to scramble to her feet once past Undyne who takes a moment in surprise. She keeps running getting a bit ahead. She turns the corner only for someone to grab her into hiding. She feels relief at seeing Papyrus behind this big rock.
Undyne runs past them not realizing that she just did so.
Papyrus and Frisk let out breaths of relief.
"That was close." Papyrus mentions with Frisk silently agreeing. "Well anyways you've made it a good distance through waterfall without me." He mentions as they come out of hiding. "I think you'll do okay for a bit longer. I'll see what I can do about keeping Undyne busy once I find where she went." He blinks as if thinking of something. "You know what? Let's get her on our side." He grabs some paper from his inventory, Toriel told Frisk about it, drawing a small map before handing it to Frisk. "Just follow this. I'll meet you at Undynes house. If you two can become friends getting through the rest of the underground will be easier." He smiles to himself looking proud. "Papyrus. You genius. Nyeh heh heh heh!" He runs off with that.
Frisk looks to the map to Undynes house. She lets out a small breath. She supposes she'll go along with it if this really will be beneficial. She continues on her way wondering if MK will be waiting for her. She finds Waterfalls puzzles pretty easy as she gets the hang of them pretty quickly. She makes it to a wooden bridge only to slow to a stop.
A familiar shadow stomping into view ahead. Undyne slows to a stop on the other side of the bridge.
Frisk swallows her fear at the sight of the other.
"There you are!" MK comes over to her side and his eyes light up at seeing Undyne. "Undyne! It's actually you!"
"Wait!" Frisk reaches for MK as he races towards Undyne.
MK trips falling over the edge though he catches himself with his mouth. "Help! Frisk! Im slipping!" He calls through muffled cries.
Undyne watches Frisk to see what her next move will be. Her body clearly ready to leap to save MK if she has to.
Frisks heart is pounding in her head. She knows what she must do.
For the sake of being able to do what she must, getting where she needs to go.
Frisk moves as Undyne watches her tensely. She really hopes that this is the best decision even though fear is trying to tell her otherwise.
AN:
I'm just doing what feels right in order to keep my want to work on this story. I am trying to add some big events and yes the pacing may be a little faster than before now. Like I said I'm trying to keep my want to work on this story because if I don't I'll be leaving it for another long time. I want to finish it and keep some of my sanity doing so.
Also my notes on my phone with this one kind of glitches so hopefully I caught any mistakes that may have happened. As well as any autocorrects. It seemed to have issues when I transferred it to be also saved on my computer but I can still write on it so yay!
I hope you are enjoying so far and I hope to see you in the next chapter!
