He got home in thirty-two minutes, cursing the fact that the nearest real grocery store was so dang far the entire time he drove.
He kicked himself. She'd been up six times last night with stomach pain. But with Sam so sick he'd written it off. She had a baby in there kicking her internal organs. Of course her stomach would hurt. But of course. It was early labor. And now they were here. In Lebanon, Kansas. And she was having a baby. In a snowstorm.
That Winchester curse was sure fun.
When Dean finally made it to the bunker, Sophie was curled up on the bathroom floor, breathing through a contraction. Sam paced in the hallway outside.
"She okay?" Dean asked.
"Yeah," Sam replied.
"You okay?" Dean asked.
His brother nodded.
"Why are you out here?" Dean asked.
"I pulled up a YouTube video on lamaze breathing and she threw a bar of soap at me," Sam replied.
"Got it," Dean said, pushing past and into the bathroom.
"Hey," he murmured, bending down next to Sophie and running a hand through her hair, "You okay?"
"I'm having the baby, Dean. We're not in Sioux Falls. And it's snowing and…ow!" She stopped and gripped her belly.
"You're gonna be fine," Dean assured her, "Women have been doing this for thousands of years without hospitals? Right? You're always the one telling me that childbirth is so natural?"
"Women have been doing this for thousands of years…operative word…women," Sophie panted, relaxing as the contraction passed, "You and Sam don't necessarily have the generational expertise I'd prefer if I have to give birth attended only by a layperson."
"Fair point," Dean muttered, "Okay. How close together are your contractions?"
"Six minutes," Sophie said.
"Okay," Dean said, "So we've got time. I'm gonna get you up and to the infirmary. I'm gonna call Dr. Johnson and we're gonna figure this out. Okay?"
Sophie nodded.
"Come here," he gathered her into his arms and felt her slump against his chest.
"Dean," Sophie murmured into his neck.
"Yeah?"
"I'm scared," she said.
"You're gonna be just fine," Dean assured her, "Baby too."
