"Okay," Sam said a few rounds of contractions later, "I can see the head. Next time you have a contraction don't push. Just do that lamaze breathing I was showing you earlier. Good?"
Sophie didn't pick up her head from where it lay on Dean's shoulder, didn't speak, but managed a thumbs up.
"She's exhausted," Dean said, "How much longer Sam?"
"Half hour? Hour?" Sam said, "It doesn't really say."
"It's normal for her to be tired," Jody put in, "You're doing great honey."
Sophie, truly, did great. Dean was absurdly impressed. She breathed through the contractions when Sam told her to. She didn't even swear at anyone - though Jody reminded her half a dozen times that was completely okay if she did.
"Okay after this next one head will be out and you're almost done," Sam encouraged. Sophie wasn't even screaming anymore at that point, too tired to manage anything beyond a whimper.
"You're doing great baby," Dean murmured into her hair, "I've got you. Everything's going great."
Sophie tensed, breathed the way Sam told her to, gripped Dean's arm like a vise and then relaxed more than she had for hours.
"Okay that's the head," Sam exclaimed, "She's breathing fine already. Next part's easier."
Dean breathed a sigh of relief. There was blood everywhere - even by Winchester standards. Sophie was limp in his arms. This next part better be easier. So much for gathering herself up and continuing the harvest. She'd need to sleep for a week after this.
But it was easier. The contractions still hurt and she hadn't stopped bleeding, but at least things were moving fast now. Not five minutes passed before Sam held up the bloody, squeaking baby and announced: "It's a girl! But you knew that already."
"Skin to skin!" Jody insisted from the phone, "Put her on Sophie's chest right away."
"What the hell are you doing holding her up like that!" Dean exclaimed, taking his daughter from Sam.
"My word you're beautiful," Dean murmured as he tucked the baby onto Sophie's chest, "Both of you."
"We did it," Sophie murmured, opening her eyes and kissing their daughter on the head.
"Miriam right?" Dean said, hugging them both close.
"Yeah," Sophie agreed, "Hi baby Miriam. Welcome home."
