Same Day: The Triskelion

S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters

Hallway

Steven, wearing regular clothing, finds Mabel talking to a female SHIELD agent in an empty hallway.

Steven calls out, "Mabel!" Still upset from their earlier in-counter, Mable nods a goodbye to the agent and walks away.

Mabel faces Steven as he stops in front of her. She crosses her arms, "What can I do for you, Captain?"

Steven sighs. He should've known he was going to get this from Mabel. He tells her honestly, "I just wanted to say I'm sorry. I thought you knew about the side mission. I have no excuse."

Mabel's expression softens after a moment, and she uncrosses her arms and sighs as she admits, "I should apologize, too." Steven looks at her, confused, and Mabel explains, "I didn't let you talk, and I took my anger out on you."

Steven tilts his head to the side playfully, "While not completely."

Mabel plays along. A faint smirk grows on her face as she nods, "True." She looks at him apologetically, "I was just upset, and I'm sorry again."

Steven looks at Mabel intently, "I'm sorry too." After a moment, Steven and Mabel break into a smile. He motions her to him with his hand, "Come here." Mabel doesn't hesitate and wraps her arms around his neck. He respectfully wraps his around her waist as they hug tightly. They pull away, and after a moment or two, Steven looks down at Mabel, "Wanna go somewhere with me?"

Mabel looks at Steven, a little confused, but knows she can trust him, "Sure."

Outside: Bridge

Steven drives out of the SHIELD headquarters on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle with his shield on his back, Mabel's black Porsche following behind as they cross the bridge.

Outside: The Smithsonian Museum Entrance

Mabel states as she looks at the building in front of her with her hands on her hips, wearing a beanie and having her sunglasses on, "The Smithsonian Museum." She smiles and looks at Steven to her right, "You know Steven, I've been coming here since I was a kid."

Steven looks at Mabel, surprised/amused, "Really?" They both start walking up the steps towards the entrance.

Mabel answers as she pushes her sunglasses to the top of her head, "Yeah. But it will be weird and cool to be here with you." Steven looks at her, slightly confused and with a hint of amusement. Mabel's eyes widened, and she explained nervously and awkwardly, "I mean weird because... it's from the 40s and cool because you're here now." Steven looks at Mabel in amusement at her awkwardness. Mabel stops talking and lets out a humorless chuckle, "I'm sorry, I'm babbling and ranting..." Steven cuts her off as he turns to her, standing in front of her, making them both stop walking.

Steven assures Mabel, "It's okay. Trust me, I completely understand." Mabel looks at him, a little embarrassed and shy, "I wouldn't have thought I would be here now." Steven looks at her intently as she relaxes a bit, "Come on." He nods towards the entrance and holds out his left arm like a gentleman. Mabel smiles and nods, taking his arm with her right hand. Steven and Mabel continue to walk towards the entrance.

Inside: The 1940s Exhibit Area

The Smithsonian is filled with many things from decades worth of history and value. Many people looked around, taking pictures, reading, and looking at the exhibits.

A female Smithsonian narrator on the PA says, "Welcome to the Smithsonian. Visitor information booths are available on the second level." There is an exhibit area dedicated to Captain Universe, and one sign says, 'Welcome back, Cap.' By President Matthew Ellis.

A male narrator's voice on the PA speaks about Steven, "A symbol to the nation. A hero to the world." The entrance to the Captain Universe exhibit wall says 'CAPTAIN UNIVERSE, THE LIVING LEGEND AND SYMBOL OF COURAGE'. The male narrator's voice continues, "The story of Captain Universe is one of honor, bravery, and sacrifice."

Steven and Mabel walk into the exhibition, keeping their faces hidden; Steven has a baseball cap on, and Mabel wears her beanie and so-not-reading glasses. Mabel was still holding Steven's arm like they were a couple.

The male Smithsonian narrator's voice explains with a wall showing a picture of Steven in the army before the serum saying 'PRE-SERUM, Weight: 95 Ibs. Height: 5'4", "Denied enlistment due to poor health,-" The picture below shows Steven just after he gets injected with the serum saying 'POST-SERUM, Weight: 240 Ibs. Height: 6'2", "-Steven Universe was chosen for a program unique in the annals of American warfare."

Two screens show a small Steven in his military uniform with a couple lifting their kid up to measure the height of small Steven to the kid in front of one screen as two young girls talk in front of the other screen, the male narrator's voice says, "One that would transform him into the world's first Super-Soldier." The screen fazes out small Steven to big Steven, seeing the massive weight and height difference.

A boy wearing a Captain Universe shirt with Steven's round shield in the front is standing in front of Steven, clearly recognizing him. Steven and Mabel stand by while Mabel looks around at the exhibit. Steven smiles at the kid. He puts his finger against his mouth to indicate for the boy to keep quiet while Mabel looks over and smiles at the boy. He also recognizes Mabel as Iron Woman. The boy nods as he won't say anything.

Steven and Mabel walk to where Steven's old motorcycle is displayed, a screen beside it showing black and white footage of Steven in action. Old footage recording voice says, "In this rare footage, everyone's favorite war hero, Captain Universe..."

Mabel smiles as she looks at the motorcycle, "I see your love for motorcycles haven't changed." Steven smiles softly, wrapping his left arm around her and kissing the side of her head softly. Mabel, enjoying being in his embrace, hugs him back, watching the old footage of Steven.

Steven and Mabel move on and go to the display where there are mannequins with costumes of Steven's old Crystal Gems squad, a big poster behind the mannequins showing a picture of the brave squad from left to right: Lapis Lazuli, Garnet, Connie Maheswaran, Steven Universe, Lars Barriga, Pearl, and Amethyst.

The male Smithsonian narrator's voice explains, "Battle-tested, Captain Universe and his Crystal Gems quickly earned their stripes." Many people stood around, looking up at the poster of the squad and the mannequins of the original suits/clothing, "Their mission: taking down HYDRA, the Nazi rogue science division." Steven stands there with Mabel, looking at his old squad and suit. Steven takes his left hand out of his pocket and gently takes Mabel's hand in his, squeezing it softly, needing comfort at the moment. Mabel looks up at him and offers a small, soft smile. He looks down at her and gives her a small smile in return.

Steven then turns around, leading Mabel as they walk over to a display of his friend Lars Barriga and his first love, Connie Maheswaran. The Smithsonian narrator's voice explains, "Best friends since childhood, Lars Barriga and Steven Universe were inseparable on both schoolyard and battlefield. Friend, love, and partner, Connie Maheswaran and Steven Universe, were both inseparable from before and after the serum. In the battlefield, they stood together as one." Mabel squeezes Steven's hand softly as he stares at Connie's picture in sadness; seeing a picture of the first love of his life and knowing she's gone breaks his heart, "Both Lars and Connie are the only Crystal Gems to give their lives in service of their country."

The two look down at black and white footage of Sadie, Lars, Steven, and Connie. They were all laughing and smiling brightly, all happy to be together.

Steven stares at both Lars and Connie's pictures in sadness, and Mabel reads the bio with curiosity and sadness on her face. Mabel lays her head on Steven's arm, saying he's not completely alone.

Theatre Area / Old Footage

Steven and Mabel are sitting on a bench, watching a little older-looking Jenny Carter and Sadie Miller, both being interviewed. Steven leans forward with his forearms/elbows on his thighs/knees, looking up at the screen as Mabel leans against the wall with her legs crossed, staring at the screen.

Footage - Agent Jenny Carter, Agent Sadie Miller, SSR, New York, 1953

Sadie starts, her British accent slightly faint, "That was a difficult winter."

Jenny explains, "A blizzard had trapped half our battalion behind the German line."

Sadie starts, "Steven…" After a moment of sadness, she corrects herself, "Captain Universe, he fought his way through a HYDRA blockade that had pinned our allies down for months."

Jenny takes Sadie's hand, squeezing it gently in comfort, knowing it's difficult for her. Sadie continues, "He saved over a thousand men. Including the man who would... who would become my husband, as it turned out."

Steven looks down at Connie's old compass, the one he was looking at before he crashed the HYDRA plane (From Captain Universe: The First Avenger). It survived the crash and was found and given back by Wendy. Steven opens the compass to reveal a picture of a smiling Sadie.

Old Footage - Sadie smiles faintly, "Even after he died, Steven was still changing my life."

Steven is still looking at the photo of Sadie on the old compass. Mabel tells Steven, "I remember her telling me stories sometimes when she tucked me into bed." Steven turns his head to the left and looks at her, confused. Mabel looks at him in the eyes, surprised by his expression, "You don't know?" Steven shakes his head and stares at her as she explains, "My grandfather and Aunt Sadie were best friends, even after the war. They kept in touch over the years, and when I was born, there would be days where she would tell me stories about Captain Universe and the Crystal Gems." Mabel smiles as she relives the memory in her head, "And she would tell me about her three best friends,-" Steven smiles, "Connie, Lars and you." Mabel stares at Steven in sympathy at the mention of his late best friend and girlfriend. Her smile disappears as she speaks the next sentence, "After my parents and my grandfather died, her and Uncle Lars was a big help with everything... along with Mr and Mrs Jarvis." She smiles faintly.

Steven narrows his eyes at mentioning a familiar name, "I'm sorry, Mabel, Uncle Lars?"

Mabel smiles in sympathy and understanding at Steven's confusion, "Sadie's son." Steven looks away, taking in the information. Mabel pushes off the wall and leans forward to look at Steven, "I know this must be a lot to take in." She puts a comforting hand on his shoulder, "Steven, I'm so sorry for everything that happened." Mabel talks about how he missed so much throughout the years, how he left friends, family, and his life behind cause he crashed into the ice, and how he had to start a new life many years later. Mabel gets an idea, squeezes Steven's shoulder, grabbing his attention, "Wanna go somewhere with me?"

Steven smirked faintly at the question and gave the same answer Mabel gave him, "Sure."
