Chapter Two
At the hospital they watched Andy be wheeled away for tests while they all sat down in chairs. Ben pulled out his phone and searched the hospital online.
"Oh, no," he said aloud.
"What?" Vic asked, panic on her face. "What's wrong?"
"This hospital. It's the one where Derek died." Ben told her, not wanting to prolong this.
Vic and Maya looked at Ben, shock on their faces while Robert and Natasha had concern on theirs.
"That was for a head injury though, right? Andy should be fine." Natasha tried to reassure everyone. "We shouldn't panic until we know what her injuries are."
"She has burns on her neck, and one of her hands too. She passed out so the fire must have burned her lungs." Ben told them.
"We know. We all saw them, Ben. We just don't know if there's any other injuries." Robert spoke up.
Everyone was silent after that. No one knew what to say when the newly minted captain was badly burned and injured, and her fate was unknown. They were sitting there for what felt like hours when they heard footsteps coming through the halls.
"Where is she?" Miranda asked with a panicked expression on her face, Meredith next to her. They were even more surprised when they saw Carina behind them too.
"She's in the ICU. Through those doors. We haven't gotten any updates yet." Meredith and Miranda nod and rush off, not caring about the nurse trying to stop them from going through the doors.
"Carina, what are you doing here?" Maya asked, walking over to her wife.
"When I heard that there was a firefighter down at this hospital, I thought it might be you and there's something I needed to tell you that can't wait so I was worried and sort of begged to come." Carina let out a breath that Maya assumed she was holding until she laid eyes on her.
"Carina, I'm okay. Andy was the one who's hurt." Maya told her and held her hand. "She was surrounded by fire, and she got burned and we're sure her lungs suffered some damage too. She was trapped for way too long." Maya finally let the fear creep in and her eyes watered. "She needs to be okay, Carina. We need to tell her what we talked about." Carina nodded and pulled Maya into her arms for a moment before pulling back.
"Bella," Carina put her hands on each of Maya's cheeks. "I'm pregnant." Carina watched the emotions play through Maya's face before settling on excitement.
"Oh my god." Maya was shocked and pulled Carina into a hug before planting a kiss on her lips. They continued to kiss until someone cleared their throat. They separated, each with a blush on their cheeks.
"Hate to break up the happy moment," Robert started. "But can we all try to remember that our captain and more importantly one of our family members is in who knows what kind of condition?"
Everyone went silent, knowing that he was right but shocked at the anger that was clear in his voice. Because she was his ex-wife or that they were all close to Andy, they didn't know.
"Sullivan, calm down. None of us have forgotten where we are or the circumstances that led us here." Ben said, patience thin but knowing that any happiness right now would be a good thing.
Robert nodded and sat down next to his fiancé, sadness clear on his face.
Maya and Carina went to sit down a couple of seats away from the group. Vic furrowed her eyebrows as she thought about what Maya said earlier.
We need to tell her what we talked about.
Vic took a deep breath. "What did you two need to talk to Andy about?" Vic asked, catching the attention of everyone in the room.
Carina and Maya look at each other. "Now's not really the time," Maya said, not wanting to make this about them when Andy could be dying.
"Come on. Carina can announce that she's pregnant, but you can't talk about something Andy-related all of a sudden?" Vic asked, annoyed.
Carina looked down for a moment before looking at Vic and then at her wife. When she saw Maya nod she looked back to Vic.
"We've planned on asking Andy to be the godmother of Liam and any other babies we may have," Maya told Vic, eyes teary, hoping that they'll still have a chance to ask Andy.
"I just hope that we'll be able to ask her," Carina said as Meredith and Miranda walked into the room.
"Bailey? Any news?" Vic jumped up.
Miranda and Meredith looked at each other.
"Well? Can you just tell us please?" Maya asked, also getting up, walking over to Vic and grabbing her hand.
Miranda opened her mouth to tell them, but Meredith stopped her. "Andy has burns on her neck, arms and one of her hands. The smoke inhalation was extensive. She's on a ventilator right now but we don't know if she'll sur-survive the injuries" Meredith told them, voice cracking. She heard the cries of Carina and the rest of 19 and even Chief Ross. "We've induced her into a coma. We'll continue to monitor her and if she doesn't get any better…" Meredith trailed off, not wanting to think worst-case scenario right now.
"Can we see her yet?" Vic asked, voice nearly whispering. When she sees Meredith nod, she runs past Meredith and follows Miranda to Andy's room while Meredith holds everyone back, knowing that only one person can go in the room at a time.
"Vic," Miranda stopped her at the door. "She has bandages all over her and…"
"Bailey, with all due respect, I know what to expect. You don't need to explain it to me." Miranda just nodded and opened the door for Vic.
Vic walked into the room and what she saw broke her heart. Andy was lying there, bandages everywhere she could see and the tube down her throat really shook her. She had never seen Andy this way before, thankfully, but knowing that this happened because she was trying to save her ex-husband and a couple of new probies was horrible.
The probies should've known better. Vic thought to herself. This would've never happened if they had just listened instead of going off on their own. Fuck! Vic thought. She grabbed a chair that was by the door and sat it down beside the bed. She took Andy's hand.
"Andy, you need to be okay, understand? I need my best friend to stay alive, okay?" Vic reached out and grabbed Andy's uninjured hand. "Please, Andy. I can't lose anyone else." Vic watched Andy, hoping for any movement but felt tears welling up when she didn't move at all. "Andy, please." Vic begged, tears falling.
