Two weeks later It was the race and Doc and Lightning were on their way to the race. Lightning was nervous for no reason.
"Calm down rookie, you're never nervous about our own race now are you?" Doc said.
"No but I kept myself busy by being the one racing." he said.
"Don't worry, now come on. Let's go have some fun."
On their way to where they were seated Lightning heard a familiar voice, Chick.
"Look who we have here, Lightning McQueen and The Fabulous Hudson Hornet. What are you doing here, I thought you had to miss the season?" Chick said smiling darkly.
Lightning made a fist and did his best to say it calmly.
"I may have missed it but I came to see a race for the heck of it thanks to Doc Hudson. He may be my crew chief but he's my friend also."
"How nice, then again he's your dad to. So we have three things for him, Doc Hudson, Fabulous Hudson Hornet and former racer. As for Lightning, Doc Hudson, Crew chief and dad I believe?" he said.
Some of the other racers knew but would keep it quiet. Lightning was gonna lose it soon so Doc had him calm down.
"Now listen here Chick, one season isn't gonna kill him. He'll be back next season and you're in for a shock." he snapped.
Then when the other racers heard the two talking they looked and saw Lightning and Doc.
"Hey look it's Lightning McQueen and Fabulous Hudson Hornet!" someone said.
Lightning sighed, closed his eyes and said to himself ' Three, two, one. '
Then people came over and started to welcome them over.
"Where have you been Lightning?" someone asked.
"I fell during a race and broke my arm and ankle remember? I'll be back next season though, don't worry." he said.
"Good, most of us missed you."
"I missed racing but Doc got tickets for this. And don't worry, I'll be there next season." he said smiling.
As the way to their seat they bumped into a lot of people and fans of both. When they finally got to their seats they got ready to race. As soon as it started Lightning was enjoying with being the one to go see it instead of the racing one.
"I was never taken to a race when I was a kid with James." Lightning said.
Doc looked at him confused, "Then why did he make you be a racer?"
Lightning shrugged, "I don't know. I've been wondering that for years myself."
It was the last lap and Chick was winning. It was gonna be close just like the ones he had with The King, and just like Lightning's first piston cup with The King and Chick racing him. At the end Chick had won and not many people cheered. On the way to Doc's car they ran into him again.
"Well, did you like me winning?" he said.
Lightning didn't answer.
"You may have won this season, but you're in for it next season." snapped Doc.
"Sure I am, come on what is he gonna do? Make it through a week into the first race and then crash?" he said laughing.
"NO! I'M NOT GONNA CRASH ONCE THIS TIME! DO WE NEED A RACE NOW TO PROVE IT?" Lightning yelled.
"Lightning, calm down. You can't race yet kiddo. And by the way, if I remember correctly, I was his hero. Wasn't I Chick?" he said smiling.
Chick turned red and was amazed he could remember that.
"Well I bet you can't race anymore after what happened!" Chick snapped.
"I race Lightning for fun and one of the reasons he can win almost every race is my training." Doc said as calm as he could.
"Sure you do and I bet you always lose."
"I DO NOT! I MAY NOT RACE ANYMORE BUT I STILL HAVE EVERYTHING IT TAKES! COME ON WE'RE ON IT, TOMOROW AFTERNOON!" he snapped.
"Sounds good to me old man." Chick said.
When they looked up they saw Lightning's face and a lot of other people looking shocked. They both turned red.
"So, The Chick versus The Fabulous Hudson Hornet tomorrow huh? The first public race in years." someone said.
"Uh," Doc said.
Before he could say anything Lightning grabbed him over to talk.
"YOU PROMISED YOU WOULD ONLY RACE ME TO MAKE IT SAFE!" he yelled worried. People could hear him yelling at Doc.
"I know I did, but he's driving me nuts! I can't help it sometimes!" Doc said.
"If you get hurt I'm going to lose it. You get one race with him and when you're done with that you only race me, got it?" Lightning said.
Doc nodded his head.
