Chapter 10: New Teammate!? Attack of the Fallen Angels!
"Man, the hell happened?" A boy thought out loud as he walked to school.
It's a sunny day in Kuoh, the birds are chirping as a new week has just begun. Just as the city was vivid with everyone talking and walking to their respective destinations, a brown haired teen scratched his head trying to piece together what happened the day before.
Issei Hyoudou got a girlfriend, an extremely hot girlfriend. No one, not even his parents could believe the news of the boy actually having a partner.
Issei was extremely happy with himself because of it. There wasn't a single thing the world could throw at the boy that would take his happiness away.
The person who he wanted to rub the news on the most was Shinji Kouki, his friend who was joining one group full of hot girls after another.
Issei hated his friend! Out of nowhere Shinji joined the Occult Club with Rías and Akeno, the two most popular girls in school and soon after got himself into the Student Council which was full of girls like Sona, Tsubaki or the black haired teen's friend, Momo! And the boy didn't even think about inviting him to the party! The treason!
That was something Issei wouldn't forgive so easily. At least try and give him Sona's number, dammit!
But now Issei had the upper hand. Yes, finally against all odds and defying his rotten luck he got himself a girlfriend! Oh how the brown haired teen wanted to rub the news on Shinji's face!
Yuuma Amano. Oh just thinking about her sends shivers down Issei's spine!
Her perfect figure, her beautiful face, her exotic eyes and how considerate she was with him. Issei reached heaven for the first time in his life!
Just as he was enjoying the best thing that happened in his life, a miracle showed up in the form of Shinji witnessing him with Yuuma.
Oh, the planets aligned in favor of Issei now! Grabbing Yuuma's hand he ran to the black haired teen, his priority was set straight. Issei was going to rub his girlfriend on Shinji's face. The black haired teen couldn't believe his eyes, and neither could Matsuda nor Motohama.
Yes! Finally Issei was able to one up Shinji and get a girlfriend before him!
"Thank you, God!" Issei screamed as he finally felt his luck turn around.
But that happiness wouldn't last forever.
'Could you die, please?'
Those words still haunt Issei as he tries to piece together the sudden change of events from the day before.
After finally getting a girlfriend, Issei was asked on a date on Sunday! The brown haired boy was so shocked by the sudden news he was at the verge of crying from happiness.
So, he searched for what to do. Asking on countless blogs and looking at Kuoh's best places for eating or enjoying the day, Issei made the perfect date plan.
He grabbed his savings and bought new clothes, an imported perfume and even brushed his teeth countless times thinking that God would give him the gift of a kiss.
Issei couldn't sleep waiting for his date to happen, looking at his clock he took a shower and made sure to clean himself thoroughly. As he was leaving his home his parents joked about how the boy was actually looking different than before and if he was going on a date or something.
Oh if they knew how true that was! 'Mama, papa, I'll make you proud!' Issei was more determined than ever to score the jackpot and get a kiss at the end of the day.
He dashed to their meeting spot early, fifteen minutes earlier to be precise. Fidgeting with his fingers, Issei turned his head both ways to see if Yuuma was coming. 'Maybe I rushed it a bit.' He thought.
While standing next to the train station, Issei scratched his chin as he turned to see various couples walking by or just chatting. 'Ohhh…! That'll be me in no time!' The boy thought as he couldn't contain his excitement any longer.
Issei also received a paper with some weird drawings from a strange girl, 'we grant your wish' written below it.
Then he saw the girl. Turning around, Issei saw how Yuuma stopped next to the boy, breathing hard as it seemed she was running for a while. "Sorry for making you wait, Issei-kun." She bowed a little.
'I always wanted to say this!' Issei raised his hand to calm the girl. "Down worry Yuuma-chan, I just got here."
Then the pair started their date. Issei had and overall plan for everything but he decided to just walk with Yuuma, his heart beating faster from pure bliss.
Oh, how exciting everything was! Going to a clothes shop and trying new shirts with the help of Yuuma, gifting her a bracelet or just stopping to eat something. Issei couldn't believe his current situation.
Everything was going so fast, so perfect!
But, it was at the end of his date that thing's got weird.
Just as the pair was walking through the park, they just reached the fountain in the middle of it. Then, suddenly, Yuuma turned to ask Issei a favor.
'A kiss! It's a kiss!' Issei's chest got tighter as he was about to crown the day the best way possible. "Y-Yeah, Yuuma-chan. What's wrong?" He asked.
"Could you die, please?" Yuuma suddenly said.
Issei didn't even got time to react. In front of him two of black wings spurred from Yuuma's back, her appearance drastically changing as well.
Long gone was the cute girl Issei was dating just now, before him stood a woman looking like in her early twenties with more revealing clothes than before.
'The hell!?' Issei thought as he stumbled back. "Y-Yuuma-chan?"
"It was fun playing innocent lovey-dovey for a while." The girl commented as she extended the hand with the bracelet Issei gifted her. "I'll take good care of this gift from you."
"Now then." Suddenly, a bright light emanated from her left hand. As it took shape, Issei could see some sort of weapon was now on Yuuma's hand. "Please, die."
"Yuuma-cha-" Before Issei could react, Yuuma extended her weapon and impaled the boy with it, "-Argh!"
Issei looked down, there he saw a spear-like object stabbing him. As the boy tried to grab the tip with his hands, a flash of light emitted from the weapon and then the spear disappeared.
As there wasn't anything filling up Issei's wound anymore, blood suddenly started to erupt where the weapon hit him. "Bwah!" Issei coughed blood as he dropped to the floor.
"Sorry this has to be the end, Issei-kun." Yuuma decided to sit on the fountain as she looked down on the boy. "Inside you lies something that threatens my kind, you see."
"You know, before you there was someone else. I thought he was the one with the Sacred Gear inside, sadly he was already in a peerage." Yuuma rested her head on her arm, she was still using the bracelet Issei gifted her. "Then it turns out I was wrong and it was actually you. Knowing this I just couldn't let my failure run amok and end up recruited by another devil here."
"So, sorry Issei-kun. I had to kill you." Yuuma chuckled as she stood up. "If you want to blame someone, blame God for putting a Sacred Gear inside of you."
Issei heard half of what Yuuma said, his body lost all strength as he also was quickly losing consciousness because of the blood loss.
Then she disappeared, only a few black feathers remained where Yuuma stood.
Issei cursed, he knew he would die. He cursed as he hated how stupid and bizarre his death was.
Most of all he cursed as he couldn't even touch a breast before dying.
As Issei drew his last breath, his mind pictured someone with hair the same color as the blood covering him.
Rias Gremory.
A third student at Kuoh Academy, the number one most popular girl in school. A girl with such beauty it would put any model next to her in shame.
Her long, perfect hair had such a deep red color it was hard to miss her in a crowd. That same red color was on Issei's hand just now.
'Then…if I die…' Issei's vision started to fade. '...Just….let me touch her breasts….'
Suddenly a light emitted from one of his pockets, the same pocket he put the paper the girl from the station gave him.
Then a flash of red light covered his view, soon after he felt the gentle peacefulness of death as his vision got darker.
After this his memory is all fuzzy, Issei doesn't remember anything else.
He only remembers the last words someone spoke to him.
'You will devote your life to me.'
Nothing else, his mind goes blank. Before he notices, Issei wakes up from his bed as if nothing happened.
Rubbing his forehead, Issei sighed hard. 'Was it a dream?' He thought. "But it felt so real."
Turning around a corner, the brown haired teen was still trying to put the pieces together. Scratching his ear, Issei tried to remember what he did yesterday. 'Okay, I woke up from bed and took a quick shower to see Yuuma-chan.' He raised a finger.
'Then brushed my teeth-' Issei raised another finger, '-Changed my clothes and left for my date.' The boy scratched his head. 'Ahhh! It doesn't make sense!'
Did he imagine everything? His whole morning routine included? Impossible! He just can't forget what he did for an entire day!
'Then how?' Issei sighed as he gave up trying to remember anything other than that. "Maybe if I talk to Matsuda and Motohama they might know anything."
And so, a confused Issei Hyoudou entered Kuoh Academy. Unknown to him, two pair of eyes were watching him from afar.
"And that's basically the whole story." A girl was talking to her company as they walked through the corridors of their school.
"Hmm…" Her company scratched her chin after listening to her friend. "And what will you do now?"
The girl sighed, playing with her red hair as she thought of an answer. "I don't know, you know as well as me this is not something easy to say."
For the first time in her life, Rias Gremory was clueless on what to do.
Yesterday she was peacefully doing some paperwork on her comfortable chair in the ORC room, enjoying a delicious tea made by Akeno when suddenly the summoning circle that was on a corner started to glow.
Curious, Rias stood up and decided to check it out, as she got closer she instantly felt how someone was calling for a contract.
No, it wasn't even a call, it felt like it demanded their wish to be made.
And, for the first time in her life, Rias felt how that person was demanding for her personally to appear. 'Weird.' The red haired girl thought as she decided to play along and accept the contract.
It wasn't rare for Rias to personally take contracts the same way as her peerage does; it usually demands more complex subjects than what Shinji gets to do like dates, work or something else. So the red haired girl was prepared to get asked to lift up a curse, act as a medium and whatnot.
What she wasn't prepared for is the scenery in front of her.
She suddenly was teleported to the park in the middle of Kuoh's center. Blinking a little trying to understand what just happened, she turned to see how there wasn't even a single person currently in the park.
Narrowing her eyes, Rias could see two kids running to the park before quickly turning around and leaving. "Weird, is that the job of a bounded field preventing people from coming here?" The girl thought out loud.
Just as she was trying to think why would someone cast such a spell out of nowhere, a cough behind her cut out her thoughts.
Turning around, Rias wasn't prepared for the scenery in front of her.
There lay a boy, blood surrounding his body as his hand was trying to cover the massive hole in his chest.
'What!?' Rias stepped back by the sudden change of events, quickly reading herself with magic pumping to her hands in case of an enemy deciding to attack her.
It must have been a solid minute where her instincts got haywire trying to see or hear anyone getting close to the girl. As she decided it was actually empty, Rias sighed and turned once again at the boy.
He was dead, or just about to reach heaven's gates because of how much damage he took. Deciding it was safe to take a look, Rias got closer to the boy.
'Wait…that's Shinji's friend!' Rias was taken aback by the shocking news. 'Issei Hyoudou, was it? One of those from the Perverted Trio Sona keeps talking about.'
Even Rias knew or heard about Issei's antics involving girls. For the most part the girl didn't care about them and actually thought of them as a funny way to make the student councils' president mad, having Shinji tell her how many times Issei almost died by said girls was a nice way to pass time.
'What is he doing here, and dead of all things!' Rias gulped as she was as clueless as the beginning. "Just what happened?"
Extending a hand to the boy, Rias quickly stopped before reaching the hole Issei had on his chest. 'Wait, this is…!'
Holy light, one of devils' greatest weaknesses.
'But this…how did a holy element end up here?' Rias thought as she crouched a little to see the boy better. "Hyoudou-kun, just what did you do?"
Narrowing her eyes, the red haired devil saw a black feather next to the body. Picking it up Rias could feel a slight bit of magic remaining on it. "Fallen angel." She instinctively said.
"But what's a fallen angel doing here?" Rias thought out loud as she once again turned to face the boy. "And why would they target Hyoudou out of all the people in Kuoh?"
Truth be told, she couldn't understand the motives behind such a spontaneous act. If the Grigori was actually roaming Kuoh then why didn't they target one of the devils here? Just what was Issei Hyoudou doing for them to get all the way here and kill him?
'Is he a fugitive?' Rías thought as she was still trying to put the pieces together, she quickly shook her head. 'No, he doesn't look like someone that knows how to fight. If anything he died with one swift blow.'
Rias was curious. For the first time in her life someone wished so hard for her to be summoned and then, to top it off, she sees the body of a boy that got targeted by the fallen angels themselves.
So Rias took a gamble. "If you're so important for the Grigori to actually come here, let's try this."
Opening her hand, a small magic circle appeared on it and a small chess piece dropped on top of her palm. "One [Pawn]." She thought out loud.
Putting the piece on top of Issei's chest, Rias waited for the devil piece to glow as it got absorbed by the boy's soul.
A few seconds passed and still nothing, the piece laid quietly still in the same position she left it. 'Not enough?' The red haired girl thought.
As she casted another circle, a different piece appeared on top of the boy. "Will a [Rook] make a difference?"
The same result, it was as if Issei was rejecting Rias' devil pieces. "What's going on?"
Rias then summoned the totality of her remaining devil pieces on top of her hand. Constantly swapping the piece on top of Issei waiting for them to work, the red haired girl narrowed her eyes. 'Why isn't it working?'
Suddenly she got an idea of why the boy was rejecting every piece. 'A powerful ability!' Rias' eyes widened at the sudden realization. "Do you have a Sacred Gear perchance?"
'Then, if swapping them doesn't work….' She grabbed the remaining [pawns] in her hand. 'What about adding?'
Rias took a closer look at her [Pawn] pieces. 'Seven.' She thought.
When she revived Shinji to repay the life the boy sacrificed for her, Rias used one of her [Pawn] pieces for it. As the Devil Pieces follow the same order as an ordinary chess set, she still had seven [Pawn] pieces remaining to use for her peerage.
It was a big gamble, for a devil to use so many resources on a reincarnation can either be extremely beneficial for a powerful ally on their side or it can backfire when they don't reach the potential once thought of.
Slowly but surely, Rias started to put her [Pawn] pieces on top of Issei's chest. One, then two, three and even four.
Not a single response was occurring as she couldn't believe how much this boy was demanding for his reincarnation. 'Hyoudou-kun, I'm putting my full trust in you.' Rias thought as she looked at her last three [Pawns]. "I'm going all in on this, then."
Seven, now seven [Pawn] pieces were on top of Issei's chest, Rias never heard of someone demanding so much for their reincarnation.
Then, suddenly it happened.
The pieces started to glow brightly, then slowly they were starting to be absorbed by Issei's body. 'It worked!' Rias cheerfully thought.
"You were the one to call me, didn't you?" Rias asked as she stood up once again and looked down on the boy. "If you're dying anyway, I'll take you."
"Hyoudou Issei-kun." Rias called the boy's name one last time before a red light engulfed his body. "From now on you will devote your life to me."
And thus, Rias Gremory added a new member to her peerage.
The red haired girl rubbed her forehead as she remembered the events from the last day. Yes, now she had a new servant, one that showed extreme promise because of him consuming seven [Pawn] pieces to be reincarnated.
Taking a turn around a corner, both Rias and her company kept walking around Kuoh on their way to the ORC; the red haired devil still thinking on her next step.
Yes, she revived Issei Hyoudou, but the boy doesn't know about his new life as a devil. After taking a look at his wallet to find his address and do a quick healing spell, Rias left the brown haired boy sleeping in his bed as if nothing happened.
Rias tried the direct approach when Shinji died so now she wanted to slowly make Issei part of the supernatural world, and there's also the fact that her favorite show was airing a new episode yesterday night and she didn't want to miss it.
With Issei, Rias believes it's just having a talk after inviting him to her club; she would introduce everyone and explain what happened to him.
The hard part was, of course, her peerage loose cannon. Shinji Kouki.
Rias still remembers how the black haired teen stormed out of her club after insulting everyone when he learned that his friend was captured by the stray devil Perse. The girl also remembers how Shinji took beating after beating just to protect either his friends or people around him.
He's an extremely reliable person that puts everyone before him. The one and truly thing Rias appreciates the most about the boy is his commitment and pure heart.
That, also, is his weakness.
Shinji Kouki tends to be hot headed, Rias already knows this. His inability to wait a second and listen to the red haired girls' plan to rescue Momo when she was captured taught her that the boy tends to put his mind on something and forgets the rest.
How will Shinji react when he finds out his friend died? And also the fact she was the one that revived him?
Rias knows she's walking on a thin line now, Shinji has a short temper and now she has to slowly tell the boy his best friend died. Even the girl knows that's an extremely bad topic to bring up.
So Rias decided to open up to Akeno and ask for her advice. She needs someone she can trust to tell her a second opinion on how to approach her dilemma.
"So, on one side I have to tell Hyoudou-kun he's a devil now." Rias lifted a finger from her left hand. "And on the other hand, I have to tell Shinji that his friend is dead." She raised a finger from her right hand.
"Hmm..." Akeno rubbed her chin as she made a pensive expression. "You sure like making things difficult, huh?"
"Yeah, tell me about it." Rias responded while sighing.
"For now I'd say tell Shinji-kun about this first." Akeno turned her head to face her friend. "Better to have the cat out of the bag and come clean with him."
"Yeah, I thought about that as well." Rias turned to face the window next to them, she could see Issei and the rest of his group sitting on a bench. "But Hyoudou-kun probably has his devil powers showing up, I don't want to leave him like this without him knowing what's going on."
"We also have to consider that there's fallen angels lurking in Kuoh now." Recalling the scene from yesterday, Rias sighed. "If they get their hands on Hyoudou-kun they might think he's a stray and kill him."
"I doubt that'll happen." Akeno shook her head as she denied her friend's worries. "It is known by now that two heirs from powerful devil clans reside in Kuoh. I don't think they'll take out a devil just like that without expecting repercussions."
And Akeno was right, Rias also thought that the leader of the fallen angels wouldn't risk breaking the peace treaty by killing a newly reincarnated boy. There was too much at stake for them to hunt in Kuoh.
'There's also the possibility of them believing Issei to be a stray'. Rias thought as she took into consideration how stray devils are cataloged as a target for every faction to hunt. Even if a fallen angel kills one the devils wouldn't bat an eye on it.
Just when the girls exit Kuoh Academy's main building, they got the usual screams of love and appreciation from the people surrounding them.
'Ahh, I miss my peaceful days…' Rias shook her head as her mind was trying to decide the best course of action.
As the red haired girl closed her eyes and turned her head to the sky, she decided to peacefully enjoy the sun caressing her face and relax before coming to a decision.
"There he is!" Of course that peace wouldn't last long.
Both Rias and Akeno turned to face where the sudden stream of insults came from, the girls chuckled as they recognized the poor soul receiving them.
"Kouki! Good for nothing slacker!"
"After school I'll wait for you outside and beat you down, asshole!"
"You and our Onee-samas going out is an insult to this world!"
Why of course in front of them it was none other than the most hated person in Kuoh Academy, Shinji Kouki. The teenager was not only one step below even the Perverted Trio, but had his own place as 'public enemy number one'.
Rias could see how the boy was on his usual patrol around school as part of the student council. 'I honestly believe by now Sona enjoys watching him get thrown a barrage of insults every day.'
"My my, I sometimes feel bad for our dear Shinji-kun." Akeno giggled as she saw someone throw a can at the boy, the latter turning around and throwing it back.
"Yeah, it was fun at first but now I just feel bad for him." Rias admitted while resuming her walk to the ORC.
When his unfortunate title as the 'Idols Casanova' started, Rias thought it was a ridiculous idea that would die down in a couple of days.
She couldn't have been more wrong.
It's been weeks and he's still getting everyone shouting at him everything except 'good morning'.
The red haired girl offered to tell everyone that it's just a stupid rumor that got out of hand; Shinji just waved it off and told her it's okay, that he's used to it by now.
'Shinji, sometimes I feel life hates you in a kind of way.' Rias chuckled as she could see an angry mob starting to form around the boy. Luckily for him, both Momo and Tsubaki got there in time to save him.
'I hope you don't take this news badly, though.' The red haired devil sighed. 'I guess we'll talk after school, then we'll see what we do with Hyoudou-kun.'
"Akeno." As the black haired girl heard her name, she turned to face Rias. "If you can, try putting a spell on Hyoudou-kun just in case he gets into trouble."
"So you'll tell Shinji first, then?" Akeno asked as the pair reached the old school buildings' main doors. "Yeah, I'll probably tell him tomorrow if anything."
"Understood, Buchou." Akeno bowed a little before turning back to the school building in search of Issei.
"Well, that's one less thing to worry about." Rias sighed as she opened the door to the old school building. "Ahh, I need a shower." She complained.
"This park…" A boy stopped as he walked to a familiar park, the same park his world turned upside down the day before.
Issei Hyoudou was having, for the most part, a mental breakdown. After leaving school like every day, the boy went with his two friends Matsuda and Motohama to Matsuda's home to check out the new DVD the boy bought.
The two boys decided to turn off the lights and enjoy the erotic video Matsuda bought, but to Issei something was definitely off.
He could see clearly in the dark, even with the lights off the boy saw the entirety of Matsuda's room like it was daytime.
In a state of panic, Issei left his friend's home. There the boy also heard a conversation a mother was having with her child on the other side of the street like they were next to him. 'What's going on!?' the brown haired boy thought.
And so he ran. Ever since he woke up Issei started to feel his body different, like he received some sort of enhancement. Even now he was running faster and not even breaking a sweat.
Thus Issei, by some random coincidence, stopped in the same park his date with Yuuma was brought to an unexpected end.
"This is the place." Issei started to slowly walk to the fountain where he last saw Yuuma, putting his hands on top of the same place the girl sat down. "I was here with Yuuma-chan on a date."
"Yuuma-chan…." Clenching his fists, Issei was trembling by the impotence of not knowing why no one seems to remember anything. "I….I don't want to believe that was just a dream…."
Nor Matsuda or Motohama could remember him ever speaking about Yuuma, hell, they don't even remember meeting her when Issei clearly presented the girl to both boys!
Her contact was also deleted from his phone, the messages the pair sent to each throughout the past week were also gone. 'It's as if she never existed.' Issei thought.
"Just what's going on?" Issei dropped his head in frustration. "Why does no one remember Yuuma-chan!?"
Punching the floor, Issei started to question everything. 'Was it all my imagination? No, I just can't make up an entire week with a girl! Just what happened!?'
"Hm."
Then, he felt it.
Issei's eyes got wide as a sharp instinct told him to quickly turn around. "Wha-" His body was frozen as he could see a figure approach him.
"Looks like it's my lucky day to meet your kind here, boy." As soon as the mysterious figure decided to walk out of the shadow of a tree in the park, Issei could see a tall man with a long coat covering his entire body, a fedora on top of his head.
'My heart is beating so fast..!' Issei's body started to tremble in fear, his mind quickly telling him to run and leave that place now. 'Who is this guy!?'
"Heh." Just as a gust of wind was strong enough to move the fedora a bit, Issei could see the mysterious figure's eyes. By a mere reflex the brown haired boy took a step back.
But something different from what he expected happened. Instead of just taking a few steps back for precaution, Issei's body jumped backwards to gain more distance on its own. "W-What!?" The brown haired teen looked at his body in shock about how he was even able to do that. 'The hell!? I just wanted to step back a little!'
"Running away?" The mysterious figure once again decided to speak, breaking Issei out of his thoughts.
"S-Stay away from me!" Once again Issei stepped back, only this time deciding to turn around and run out of the park. "I don't know what's going on!"
The mysterious man chuckled as he could see the brown haired teen making a dash for his life. "Ah, it's more fun this way after all." Soon after his declaration, a pair of black wings erupted from his back. Flipping them with all his strength, the man took flight to chase Issei.
'H-Home..! I need to get home!' Issei was putting all his strength on his legs, trying to run full speed ahead and hide inside his house. "I need to get out of this place!"
As Issei was reaching the park's exit, a few black feathers started to drop in front of him. 'W-Wait.' Suddenly a single thought ran through his head.
'Could you die, please?'
'This feathers…. Yuuma-chan!' Issei's heart skipped a beat as the boy remembered the familiar feathers also dropping on the date the boy had with the girl.
The same date he presumably died.
'N-No…' Shaking his head to forget about that grim detail, Issei didn't stop running. 'There must be some mistake, if I died how come I'm still here! Just what happened to Yuuma-chan!?'
Sensing something atop his head, Issei looked up to check what was happening. His eyes got wider as the boy was now witnessing the same mysterious man from before flying above him. "What!?"
Then, he descended. As the mysterious man chuckled once more, he decided to drop in front of the boy, suddenly stopping his escape. "Ah, looks like this little race of ours has come to an end, boy."
"What is this!? What do you want!?" Issei stumbled back as he couldn't believe his eyes. 'First Yuuma-chan grows a pair of wings and stabs me and now this guy!?'
"Hmm, let's see." The mysterious figure started to walk. "You're not forming a magic circle and I can't also feel the presence of an ally of yours, devil."
"D-Devil? Magic circle?" Issei's eyes got wider as he started to see the cloaked man getting closer to him. "What are you talking about!?"
"My obvious conclusion is that you're a stray." The mysterious man chuckled. "No repercussions of me killing you now."
As Issei still had trouble trying to understand what was happening, the cloaked man extended his hand. A short burst of light took form into that of a spear. 'That…that looks like the same thing Yuuma-chan did!' Issei thought.
'Screw this! I need to get away!' His mind was rushing tenfold telling Issei to get away from the man as fast as possible. "If this is actually a dream I'd rather be spending it surrounded by hot chicks, not this guy!"
"Think fast!"
*STAB*
"Argh!" Issei could feel an acute, sudden pain. His run was cut as he fell to the ground, looking at his chest he could see the same spear the man was holding now piercing his stomach.
"W-Wha-" The boy couldn't even finish his sentence as he started to cough blood. "W-What is this!? It hurts even more than before!"
"Hurts, no?" The mysterious man chuckled as he got closer to the now crouching Issei. "Holy light is poisonous to your kind, after all."
Then the spear disappeared. Blood suddenly started to pour out of the open wound while Issei was screaming because of the pain.
"Hngh…!" Issei tried to stand up, tried to make his body respond to his pleading of leaving the area some way or another. Sadly for him, his legs wouldn't let that happen.
"Normally that is enough for your kind to die." The cloaked man was already looking down on the brown haired boy. "Guess you're tougher than you look."
"Don't worry, this time I'll make sure you stay down for good." The cloaked man once again materialized a light spear on his hand. "Goodbye, devil."
'No…! Not like this!' Issei closed his eyes as his body trembled with fear. 'Someone, anyone! Help me!'
The cloaked man raised his hand holding the spear, its presence still making Issei's mind go haywire. Then, he decided it was enough; launching the spear to the boy's head, the man wanted to make sure to kill him.
"Oh, no you won't!"
*BANG*
"Wha-" Suddenly, the light spear headed for Issei's head exploded mid air. "Hngh!" The cloaked man covered his face as the sudden change of events caught him off guard.
Taking a few steps back, the man once again turned to Issei. "Boy, was that your doing?"
As a way of responding to his question, a bright light emanated from the bushes in front of Issei. "Guess not." The man thought out loud.
"It would be wise for you to drop your weapon." A girl walked out of the bushes, her red hair flowing with the wind.
"R-Red…hair…." Issei commented as his vision started to get blurry. "Rias...senpai…?" Finally, the brown haired boy collapsed to the ground, unable to hold any longer because of his wound.
"A girl?" The man chuckled as the light spear reappeared in his hand. "Who do you think you are!?" Once again he threw his spear, only this time directed at the girl.
"Ei."
Even before the spear could get close to the red haired girl, a petite girl jumped in front of her. Using her bare hands, she reflected the spear back to the cloaked man.
"Tch!" The mysterious man gritted his teeth as stared at the new pair in front of him. Summoning once again the spear to his hand, he launched himself to attack both girls. "Why, you!"
"Resound! Thunder!"
The mysterious man's eyes got wide as he felt something above him. Before he could even react, a lightning strike fell just in front of him; the sudden impact halting his attack and sending him flying back.
"Ara Ara, you're not as fast as you look." A new girl decided to make her presence known as she landed next to the others, covering her mouth with her hand as she laughed at the one she attacked.
"Hrgh!" The mysterious man cursed as he raised his head the ones responsible for the sudden change of events. Narrowing his eyes, his focus was fixated on the girl in the middle. "Red hair…? Ahh, I see.."
"You must be from the Gremory family, correct?" The man made the spear in his hand disappear.
The girl chuckled as she faked a small bow. "I am Rias Gremory. Pleased to make your acquaintance, dear fallen angel."
"Hmmm." As the mysterious man stood up, he decided to dust off his clothes. "Ah, who would've guessed this area is under the jurisdiction of a devil. And the Gremory heiress no less."
"I take it he's part of your peerage?" The mysterious man turned to face Issei, the boy was lying unconscious by all the blood he lost. "Yes. Any harm that comes his way will also be dealt to you tenfold, dear fallen angel."
"Well, guess I overstayed my time here." The man turned to grab the fedora that fell to the ground when he received the lightning strike. Dusting it off, he put it back on top of his head.
"Piece of advice, though." He turned around to face Rias once again. "You better not let your servants run free like this one-" He pointed at Issei, "-They might get themselves killed by someone like me taking a stroll, you know?"
'Trying to act all mighty and superior in front of me? Be grateful I can't kill you without reigniting the war.' Rias sighed as she contained the urge to turn the fallen angel in front of her to dust, instead she drew a smile. "Thank you for the advice, dear fallen angel."
"But please let me give you one as well." Suddenly, Rias' aura started to skyrocket; her own powers showing. "I will not let you off scot-free should you do something like this again."
"The sentiment is mutual, heiress of Gremory." The man bowed respectfully as his wings extended. In a swift motion, he lifted off from the ground. "My name is Donnasiege. I do hope our paths never cross again."
As Donnasiege disappeared into the sky, Rias could feel a familiar spell vanishing as well. 'Bounded field….was he the same one from yesterday too?' She thought as she looked at the sky.
"I find it hard to believe he didn't know about this being a devil's territory." Akeno commented as magic stopped circling on her fingers. "Playing the dumb card of course, not surprising." Rias sighed as she already thought the same before.
"How is he, Koneko?" Turning around, the red haired devil could see the petite girl crouched while putting a hand on Issei's neck to check for his pulse. "Alive, just barely." The girl commented.
"Smart move to put that spell on him, Buchou." Akeno casted a spell of her own to check for any unwanted attention nearby; looking at there wasn't any, she sighed. "Who knows what would've happened if we didn't show up in time."
"It wasn't fast enough, Hyoudou-kun got stabbed again." Rias lamented as she caressed the boy's cheek. "This is far worse than yesterday too." The red haired girl cursed her lateness to the encounter.
"Everything keeps piling up.* Rias rubbed her forehead as she was already feeling a migraine. "Why is it when something happens is one thing after the other…."
"I take it you didn't tell Shinji about Hyoudou-kun yet?" Akeno thought out loud only for Rias to sigh. "No. I couldn't find the time, sadly."
Rias flinched as she remembered the time after school. "After his stay at the student council, Shinji got summoned to urgently fulfill a contract the same way Kiba got his own matters now."
"A new client?" The black haired girl asked as she got curious. "Yes, in a way. He's working as a bouncer now as we speak, to make it worse his phone got smashed two days ago when a fight started there."
Ah yes, just after Shinji finally managed to separate the ones fighting the other day at the bar; the guy from the gang that got punched decided to show up at the same place with backup.
The result? An even worse fight erupting both inside and outside the bar that got so bad Shinji actually had to use his devils powers to knock out the majority of the people fighting. In the middle of that disaster someone threw the teen to the counter hard enough to break the phone inside his pocket from the force of crashing against it.
God knows why the boy is becoming a magnet for trouble lately.
"What are we going to do with him, Buchou?" Koneko asked as she stood up. "His wounds seem serious." Akeno commented.
"Yeah, some spells are not going to cut it this time." Rias walked to Issei's body. Crouching a little, she put a hand on the boy's cheek. "Hyoudou-kun, you're going to be okay."
The red haired girl chuckled. "After all, there's no way you'll go down just like that."
"My cute new pawn."
"Hmmm."
As a boy slowly opened his eyes, he could see he was not in his bedroom anymore. Long gone was his comfortable bed, now the teenager was resting on top of a grass field. A distant storm was all he could hear.
"The hell am I?" The boy scratched his head as he rose to a sitting position. "This isn't my bed."
"Ah, I see you have returned to this place again, young one."
A sudden thunder roared as the entire scenery in front of the teenager lit up, now he could see the same landscape with several mountains and rivers expanding into the horizon. Turning around, the boy's eyes got wide as he recognized the familiar shape of the one speaking to him. "Wait, Shenlong!"
"So you do remember me." The gigantic dragon resting on top of a mountain made a small bow with its head. "I see we have far more in common than I anticipated if you once again appear before me."
"What is this place anyway?" Shinji asked as he scratched his head, the dim rain already making its presence known as the teenager felt his hair starting to get wet.
"This is the world between worlds." The dragon spoke as it turned to the left. "Neither in the realm of the living nor in that of death."
"What is that supposed to mean?" Shinji scratched his cheek. 'I go to sleep after a disastrous day and next thing I know I'm in this place again.' The boy sighed. 'Can't it be a tropical beach for once?'
"It means we're in a world of our own, young one." Shinji could hear the relaxing sound of the water flowing around him. "My domain exists in what your kind knows as the 'astral plane'."
"The astral plane?" Shinji scratched his chin. "Never heard of it."
"The rift between life and death." Shenlong explained. "We are currently in the spirit world. My domain extends to everything your eyes can see and much more."
"Woah…" Shinji turned his head just to see all the mountains extending far away from his vision. The rivers still opening up into several others and continuing in an infinite flow of water far away into the horizon.
"And why I'm here anyway?" Once again the boy turned to face the dragon. "If this is the spirit world I should be dead, right? I got reincarnated though, I shouldn't be here."
"No, you shouldn't." Shenlong admitted. "Because of your reincarnation, your soul has been removed from the never-ending wheel of life."
"But even so, you shouldn't be able to enter this place." Shenlong explained. "This world of mine has seen its number of humans, yes, but only after they achieved the greatest state of a clear mind; separating their souls from their bodies even if for a brief moment."
"Clear mind? But I didn't do anything…" Shinji tried to understand what the dragon was telling him. "I just went to sleep like last time and now I'm here!"
"Yes, your continuous return to this place is intriguing to me, young boy." Shenlong responded as it stopped raining. "Have you never entered any of my shrines? How come you're intertwined with me?"
"Any of your shrines?" Shinji repeated. "No. Last time I went somewhere it was the abandoned church here in Kuoh when it was still open. But it's been a while since that."
"Interesting…" Suddenly, Shenlong decided to leave his resting place. As the dragon's claws stopped gripping the mountain, Shinji could hear the sound of falling rocks and an incessant shaking coming from it. "Woah!" The boy almost stumbled back.
Dropping all the way down to the floor, part of Shenlong's body was still covering the lower part of the mountain; yet the dragons' head was getting closer to the black haired teen. "H-Hey!" Shinji panicked as his entire view of the mountains was now interrupted by the azure dragons massive head.
"This feeling…" Shenlong stopped right in front of the teenager, his grey eyes never leaving Shinji's. "So, this is why you were able to use those powers."
"Powers? What're you talking about?" Shinji was still in shock from having such a massive creature just a few centimeters away from him, the boy could actually feel Shenlong's breathing!
"Yes, there is a channel." Shenlong responded. "Look, young one." Just as the azure dragon's eyes started to glow brightly, Shinji covered his face. "Agh!"
"Take a closer look at your body now." Slowly opening up his eyes, the black haired teen dropped his head to look at his body. "Woah! What's this!?"
Surely enough, Shinji could see a blue stream going all the way from his chest to his entire body. The continued stream had the shape of a vein as it separated into different channels extending all the way to his arms and legs.
"That is my power." Shenlong explained. "But how do you have it?"
"Your power?" Shinji raised his hands as he took a closer look at the blue veins getting brighter. "You can make this blue thing or what is this?"
"That blue glow represents my energy, young one." Shenlong once again lifted his head, his eyes never leaving the boy. "It is flowing out of your chest."
"My chest?" Shinji put a hand on his chest. Clearly enough, the boy could see the source of the blue stream coming out of it as it was a big sphere.
"I felt it first that day you awakened your resolve." Shenlong admitted. "Ever since that day I've been feeling how a connection was formed between the two of us."
'Awakened my resolve..' Shinji thought about what Shenlong said. 'But I've never felt anything out of the ordinary, when did-'
'RAAAAAAAAAAA!'
Suddenly, Shinji's eyes got wide as a clear memory popped up inside his head. 'Wait, that was when I almost got killed by Perse again! After he almost took out Tsubaki!'
Yes, Shinji could remember how he jumped in front of Tsubaki just as Perse was about to kill her by impaling the girl with her tail. After the boy took the entirety of the attack, he was thrown to the side while blood kept pouring out of his wound.
Shinji thought he was about to die that day, his mind already prepared to face the gentle darkness of death.
But then he felt it.
'This power that's been granted to you, use it to fulfill your wish.'
Just as he heard a familiar voice speak inside his mind, Shinji felt how a new burst of power started to pump inside him.
He never felt anything like it before. As if his body got a sudden adrenaline rush multiplied by the thousands, Shinji was starting to regain consciousness.
Then, all this power concentrated on a single point; his right hand. In a burst of anger, Shinji raised his fist trying to stop Perse as she was about to attack both him and Akeno.
As he got himself into a sitting position, Shinji could see his most fatal wounds recovering from Perse's attack; a blue glow emitting from them.
The same blue glow that's now circling throughout his body.
"Then….then it was you? The one that helped me there?" Shinji asked as he raised his head to meet the dragons'.
"Yes. That burst of energy was the materialization of my power, albeit small it was." Shenlong admitted as it turned to face the mountain, soon regaining his resting position on top of it.
"Boy, this confirms my suspicions ever since that day." The azure dragon roared, the storms started to get more fierce as the rivers got more aggressive. "Hngh!" Shinji got caught off guard as he covered his face with his hands.
"Suspicion!? Suspicion of what!?" Shinji screamed as the entire scenery started to get even more aggressive against the teenager. The winds were already able to make the boy walk backwards from the mountain the dragon was resting on.
"That we are connected by your soul." Shenlong roared. "Never have a human been able to form a bridge with my kind such as you now."
"Again with my soul stuff!?" Shinji screamed, the wind already making him crouch in order to not fall backwards. "I already told you I lost that thing when I got reincarnated, haven't I!? There's no way I'm connected to you by that!"
"What you did for this to occur, I don't know." Shenlong responded. "But you being able to call upon my powers and also appear before me this way proves we are intertwined."
'Dammit!' Shinji decided to grab the grass from the ground as the wind was getting fierce. A thunder struck next to the teen, leaving a burning mark. 'This is getting out of hand!'
"Young one, heed my advice." As Shinji turned to the left, a massive wave was heading his direction. "Shit!"
"My kind only appears in times of great change." Shenlong roared once again, the storm getting even crazier. "For you to be here proves danger is imminent."
"I'll be your guide. But be warned, your path will be laid with endless confrontations!"
"Young one, show me your potential!"
(Author's Note)
Okay, before I start this thing I guess I'll apologize because of my absence all this time.
Honestly one thing led to another and then boom, there goes the whole year. Putting this aside, how are you guys? It's been a while after all. Hope these new chapters find you well.
I have high expectations for the Fallen Angel Arc, I want it to put this story aside from the usual beginning every DxD fic has. I honestly know having a character being reincarnated into Rias' peerage is a common thing to do but please, try to stick with me at least on this one and check out if you like how these next chapters shape up the rest of the story.
I guess you've figured it out by now but I'm going with the way Issei got reincarnated in the light novel. I know the anime makes it seem Rias knows he is getting targeted and makes Koneko follow him and then lets Raynare kill him.
Honestly this doesn't make any sense since there's no way Rias knew Issei had a Sacred Gear before reviving him. So yeah, for the most part I'll use both the light novel and the anime and write the story with those two in mind.
So as always, please read and review to your heart's content.
See you soon!
