~~Chapter 2: Heart of the Order~~

.

I followed Remus as we stepped inside the long dreary hallway, it looked more like it belonged in an old horror movie than a house that was supposed to host a group of humans in it.

"Be careful with the umbrella stand." Remus warned as he opened the door, I looked at the ugly umbrella stand that was made out of a troll's leg. Sheesh, what kind of creatures lived here before us?

The first person to come in view was Mrs Weasley, she looked a bit surprised but then her face broke into a large smile as she almost ran to give me one of her motherly hugs. My body involuntarily stiffened, and I am sure she might've noticed it because she immediately released me. Still, she gave me a once-over, scrutinizing my face for hidden clues.

"I am so happy you're here." Mrs Weasley said, "I heard what happened; Are you alright, dear?" She asked me, concern clear in her voice.

"Yes, Mrs Weasley, I am fine." I answered back, almost immediately. "Just a little shocked by the whole affair."

Mrs Weasley nodded before giving my arms another pat and smiling, "Don't worry, dear, don't worry at all!" She started pulling me inside the door, "You are here with us now, we'll take good care of you."

But I had stopped listening to Mrs. Weasley the moment I entered the door. Why? Because right there stood the one man who was closest to being my family, the one person I knew would support me no matter what.

My Godfather, Sirius Black.

"Harry." He said; face splitting in a wide grin as he came towards me with his outstretched arms.

"Sirius." And I immediately embraced him, the man who would be there for me, even if everyone else would leave. The thought was equally disturbing and comforting at the same time. I didn't know if it was my brain that had the ability to create such thoughts at such moments or if others' brains did the same thing for them.

No words were exchanged, no promises made, but we knew that even if we didn't say it out loud, we'll still be there for each other when needed the most.

We broke apart and Sirius clapped a hand on my shoulder, "I know the house isn't much…but, well, it does provide us with a safe haven, something that we need the most right now." He started leading me towards the large dinner table, "But don't you worry, we are working on making it more habitable, hopefully sooner." He grinned at me, and I couldn't help but smile.

"You need some supper?" Sirius asked me, and I didn't have to say anything because I knew that he would want me to eat something, and Mrs Weasley was probably putting down a plate for me anyways. She always did.

So, I simply gave a smile and nodded, "That sounds lovely."

Sitting on the dinner table, I once again try looking around myself. The place itself definitely needed repairs. But the atmosphere within was so welcoming. It gave me a fuzzy feeling which I expressed by the small smile on my face. This was a welcome change after what happened at Privet Drive.

*pop* *pop*

"HIYA HARRY!" "HIYA HARRY!"

I jumped up at the sudden voices, Fred and George – or Gred and Forge, or whatever. They were apparently attempting to get the hang of Apparition, or at least that's what they were saying. In reality, it seemed more like they were enjoying themselves by scaring everyone in the house.

I can't be blamed for my grin when Mrs Weasley screamed at them.

Dinner was a ravenous affair, it was the first mouthwatering food that had been placed in front of my eyes after going into a coma. So, I completely ignored the conversation around me and instead focused my entire attention on the food that was placed in front of me.

My brain shouted at me, in a distinct Hermione-like voice, to 'Have some table manners' but I ignored the voice and focused more on cleaning up my second serving. I didn't even know that I was this hungry. Oh well, I am sure at least this time Mrs Weasley won't complain about eating 'less'.

After the dinner was finished, I finally took a deep breath and asked the first thing that had been gnawing at my brain for quite some time. Well, the second thing to be honest, but then the first thing was for some other time.

"Yeah…Anyways," I began, almost immediately garnering the attention of everyone, "What is this place? What is this…Order thing?" Hey! Don't blame me, I can't remember the entire name just by one glance at a slip of paper.

Sirius snorted at that, "The 'Order thing' he says," Lupin chuckled a bit while Moody gave a grunt, "It's called the Order of the Phoenix, Potter. An organization that stood against Voldemort in the first war. Dumbledore assembled the Order again after his rebirth in June."

The Order of the Phoenix. I let that information process in my brain. Did Dumbledore name it because it is supposedly an organization that fought darkness or is it because he saw Fawkes and liked the name that came? Who knows what went in his brain except candies.

"And what do we do?"

"Currently? We are trying to get all the information on you-know-who. Including his agenda, the number of followers he has already gained and the allegiances that he has gained or is gaining." Sirius told me, "Till date, we only know that he has chosen Malfoy Manor as his current base of operations."

"Malfoy Manor? As in Draco Malfoy's home?" I asked him, flabbergasted that the Slytherin bully was living so close to Voldemort.

"It's more like Lucius Malfoy offered his home to Voldemort so that he can repent for making the 'mistake' of ignoring his demise for thirteen years." Remus spoke as he placed the newspaper down.

"Voldemort isn't someone who forgives that easily." Moody piped in, "I am sure Malfoys will have to pay more than their house and galleons to earn his forgiveness."

I nodded along, this sounded bad. If what everyone said is true then Voldemort might be planning everything and this time a- My eyes fall on the newspaper that Remus was reading moments ago.

"Remus…what's that?" I picked up the paper and sensed that everyone around me had stopped their conversation.

"Harry, I-"

"Let him be, Black, the boy will see it later anyways." Moody interrupted, "Better here than Hogwarts."

I looked at The Prophet, there was my photo from the Triwizard along with a headline that said, "Harry Potter…the boy who lies? What's this?" I asked them and none of them met my eyes.

"It's a campaign started by Fudge. He thinks Dumbledore is after his position and that he is using his influence over you to tell lies to people," Mr Weasley tried to explain it to me.

This was outrageous! To even think that Fudge, after all that had happened in June, would try to besmirch not only mine but Dumbledore's name as well…just for a stupid campaign? Was he really that much of an idiot? Wait, wrong question. He was that much of an idiot. But the overgrown walrus was being simply stupid this time!

"But I am not lying, I am-"

"We know that." Kingsley Shacklebolt, the new auror I had met today said as he sat down in the chair next to Remus, "We know you are not lying, everyone here believes you and I am sure that there are many around the world who have faith in your words, Mr Potter." 'I know you do,' I thought, 'but you guys aren't enough to fight him!'

"So, if the Ministry isn't admitting that Voldemort is back," I ignored all the flinches again, it was quite irritating. It's not like he would come in waltzing through the door and start singing the Carols! When will they understand that?! "How do you think Fudge is going to explain the presence of Dementors in Surrey of all places and why did they only attack my cousin and uncle?"

"The investigation is still under progress as the Ministry is still trying to get their hands on the culprit who sanctioned the Dementors to attack your family," Shacklebolt told me.

"So they think that someone powerful enough to command the Dementors was after my relatives and yet they don't want to believe that it could be his work." I deliberately skipped Voldemort's name to stop the irritating flinches.

"Apparently they don't," Miss Vance said, "Because it's way easier to find a thousand excuses than a single reason. You have to understand, Mr Potter, no one wants to admit that he is back. People are afraid, and Fudge most of all. He knows that his tenure as the Minister for Magic will come to an end and so he is trying his level best to deny the war that's brewing."

"So he is acting like an ostrich, burying his head in the sand to forget about the danger that will kill him one day," I muttered, a bit more aggressively than I probably should. But this was idiotic! Fudge was being dumb and this would definitely come to bite him once Voldemort decided to finally attack.

"Astute observation, Potter." Moody grunted and the table fell silent after that.

I sighed, it looked like this year will also end up like last year. No friends, no one to talk to, everyone blaming me, and The Prophet going on a bloody campaign against me. I swear that if I ever met Fate one day, I would punch it right in its smug face.

"I am sorry, Harry," Sirius began, "We couldn't do anything to stop this."

I waved off his apology, here was a man who couldn't even prove his own innocence and ended up being thrown in the worst prison on earth without a second thought. What could he have done to prevent this whole campaign?

Nothing, that's what.

So, I waved off his apology. "You don't have to apologize, Sirius. It's not your fault that this happened. I just feel shocked because I didn't know about it earlier." I told him and saw him flinch a bit, "None of you even thought about sending a single letter to me? To tell me about all that was happening? Or even ask if I was doing well or not?"

Sirius winced a bit, while Remus looked down in shame. It was clear that I wasn't talking about them, still the two marauders were feeling guilty.

"Harry…don't blame them…" Remus– ever the pacifist– tried to speak up, "Dumbledore said-"

But I didn't want to hear anything about him anymore. This wasn't something that I wanted anyone else's opinion on, not Sirius, not Remus and definitely not Dumbledore.

"I watched Cedric die in front of me," I muttered, feeling a bit angry at myself, because I hold some of the responsibility for what happened then, "Killed by Wormtail of all people!" I spat the rat's name, "I told you two not to kill him, and look where we are now."

Sirius and Remus both looked really uncomfortable at that. I was sure that they were probably thinking about that night from two years ago. Still, I wasn't done, I had this frustration pent up inside me for quite long, and now that it was starting to come out, it was quite hard to stop.

"I needed someone to talk to," I continued, "Anyone would have helped. But no one, not even a single person, did a damn thing about it." To be honest, Hermione had. She had utilized her brain and had probably tried to bypass Dumbledore's rule. Which was why I had received a phone call on my telephone instead of the letter, but she had told me not to tell this to anyone.

And even she hadn't told me anything about the wizarding world when she had called.

"I-" Sirius began, "I am sorry Harry, I really didn't realize that it would be that hard on you. I had just assumed-"

But I stopped Sirius, "I did try to move on; to forget that anything like that had happened at all." I told him, as he was actually tearing up and I didn't want that one person to cry. "I just want to know, why did all of you decide to follow Professor Dumbledore's advice blindly?"

No one gave me any answer, Mrs Weasley opened her mouth–probably to scold me for doubting the headmaster; thankfully, Mr Weasley stopped her from doing that. It was then that Remus spoke, "We all look up to him, Harry, all of us. I am sorry but I didn't realize that you would be suffering from what happened in the graveyard. Do you still want to talk about it?"

I shrugged, I might not want to talk about it entirely, but there were many things that I wanted answers on. Therefore, I gave him a single nod. Remus then nodded at Sirius and both the Marauders got up from the table, gesturing to me to follow them.

We trudged through the dark staircase and I gulped a bit when I looked at the shriveled house elf heads that were placed on a pike inside a bell jar. All of them had the same rather snout-like nose. Who'd even think of this as some sort of decoration for their guests? Talk about gross.

Sirius chuckled when he noticed my line of sight. "Thinking about the elves, Harry?" he asked as we stepped inside a long corridor filled with cobwebs and broken floorboards.

"Why would someone even keep them for display?" I asked him as we moved past a few doors and towards an ornate door that was at the end of the corridor.

It was Remus who answered, "Well, in certain wizarding circles, the number of elves showed how rich you were. And the age of elves showed how powerful your house magic is and how old your house was for them to sustain it till that age."

"So, the more the heads meant the more old, rich and powerful that family was?" I asked him, it was a ridiculous line of thought but seeing as most of the wizards had lower IQ than room temperature, it wasn't that far-fetched for them to agree to this.

"Kind of, yes."

Like I said, IQ lower than room temperature. Idiots, the entire lot of them.

Sirius placed his hand at the carved snake handle and it glowed green for a moment before there was an audible 'snap', sounding something like a door being unlocked. Then, we entered a room that could be considered as something not belonging to where it was.

The room had four lamps, one on each corner. A sofa set and a center table. Along with a large desk with a few books, a quill-stand, inks and a stack of parchment and The Prophet. The walls were covered with bookshelves that began from the red-carpeted floor and went all the way to the white-washed ceiling.

"What's this, Sirius?" I asked him, it was probably the best room in the entire building.

"This is the room where my Grandfather and my Father spent most of their days in." Sirius explained as he reverently touched the soft leather of the ornate chair. "This is the Lord's study. No one is allowed inside this room without the permission of the Lord of the House."

I nodded along, this was new information for me. I hadn't known that there were things like that in the Wizarding world. Well, you learn something new everyday, right? Right.

We sat on the sofas and Sirius took a moment to relax, he looked more his age now than he had throughout this entire evening.

"You wanted to talk?" Remus asked as he flicked his wand, I felt the pulse of magic and for some reason I felt 'safer than before. "We can have some more privacy now."

"What's going on here?" I asked the first thing that had been eating me since I stepped inside this house, "What's this Order of the Phoenix? Are we actually fighting Voldemort? Are there any casualties? How many?" I must say that I should've stopped at the first question but this was like a dam had been opened, and I wanted to know everything now.

Sirius and Remus were both really helpful. I got to know that 'The Order of the Phoenix' was something of an illegal vigilante organization that had people who supported Dumbledore and his views. It was kind of like Voldemort's inner circle but for Dumbledore, with good people instead of skull wearing sadists and masochists.

Yes, they were fighting Voldemort and no, they weren't fighting him head-on. It was more like trying to lessen the casualties when Death Eaters attacked some city or village, and to guess what he's doing or planning to do. There was no real work being done, but they were the only ones who were doing something.

"What about Dumbledore? Why didn't he allow information to reach me?" I asked them after fifteen minutes of listening to the two.

"We don't know, Harry." Remus replied, there was a hint of apology in his tone, "It's possible that he didn't want you to bear this along with all the weight you already had."

I pursed my lips, this was a possibility, yes, but that didn't explain why no one, barring Hermione, asked me about how I was doing and if I needed some support.

And even she didn't tell me much, just called me one day, asked me if I was good and then told me that we'll probably meet sooner than I thought. She told me that there were many things going on and she couldn't tell all of it over the phone, and I shouldn't tell others that she had tried to contact me.

Do that to a teenager and see how quickly he pulls his hair out to get any more information on the topic.

"And where are they? My dear 'friends'?" I asked them, "I haven't seen any of them yet."

Sirius blinked at the change of topic but then nodded towards the door, "We just came here past their rooms. They wanted to meet you, but we thought it would be better if you met us first." He shrugged and relaxed back on his sofa.

"Do you want to talk to them, Harry?" I turned towards the werewolf and shook my head to say 'No'. "I don't want to talk to either of them right now, maybe later." I would have talked to Hermione, but talking to her and not to Ron would have been awkward. It was better to ignore both of them at once.

"Harry," Remus began, "They are your friends. They were just listening to Dumbledore's orders, you can't blame them for-"

"Friends who would listen to someone else rather than the person who had been with them through thick and thin for four years? No thanks," I butted in, my voice sounded angrier than it should be.

Sirius opened his mouth but there was a knock on the door that stopped us.

"Who's it?"

"Dumbledore's here, Order meeting in five minutes." Shacklebolt's muffled voice came from behind the door.

"We'll be there." Sirius told him, and we heard the regular clacking of boots slowly diminishing into nothingness.

"We'll definitely talk more." Sirius told me as both the marauders got up from their seats, "The Lord's study will be open to you, so if you want some time away from the rush, you can always come here."

"I can't join the meetings, can I?" I asked him, even though I kind of knew the answer.

Sirius heaved a sigh while Remus patted my shoulder, "Sorry Harry. We don't mind it, but children aren't allowed."

I would have been proud to say that it didn't irritate me, but that would be a lie. My face would have shown that because Remus patted me once more before moving out of the door.

"Wait, Sirius, there was one more thing that I wanted to know." I called out to the fugitive, who stopped.

"Is there some other room that I could stay in?" I asked him, "I'd rather not sleep in the same room as Ron right now."

Sirius frowned a bit but agreed, "There is one, my brother's room. It might be the cleanest room other than the Lord's study." He said, "It's the second door to the right, you can find it easily as it's probably the only room with a clean door and a door-mat outside it."

I didn't want to stay alone in that room for long, I knew that I'd probably come here again but right now? I needed some fresh air. To sort out all the information that my brain had been bombarded with and to think of what to do with my friends.

At first, I was really upset with them, but Remus' and Sirius' points did make some sense. I was in a dilemma right now, I knew that I couldn't just forgive them immediately but, well I'll…Ugh…I definitely needed some fresh air.

I moved out of the room when I heard some commotion, I moved towards the staircase and saw the other Weasleys and Hermione standing together on the first level. They were discussing something when there were two distinct pops.

"Don't fear-" "-when we are here!"

"George!" Hermione gasped and swatted George's arm, or was it Fred's? They did appear all of a sudden so it was kind of deserving too. But it didn't seem like either of the two minded her at all.

"The pretty lass remembers me first, Freddie!" The now known George smirked.

"Of course, it's not uncommon to remember the worst thing first and the better thing later. It makes sense she remembers the ugly twin," Fred replied, he was smirking too.

"I am sure the pretty lass can be the judge of the uglier twin," George told him before they both grinned lunatically at Hermione, "So, which one of us is uglier, Miss Granger? Is it George?" He pointed at himself.

"Or is it George?" The other one pointed at himself too.

Hermione just grumbled before pushing both the boys to either side, "You both are equally ugly and useless." She said and was about to move forward when the twins again blocked her way.

"Ugly, we might be-"

"But useless? Oh no."

"Oh no no no."

"We are the-"

"Most useful-"

"And the most intelligent-"

"And the handsomest too, don't forget that."

"Yes, handsomest. Wait, both of us?" One asked.

"Why not?" The other grinned and they nod together, "Handsomest wizards around." They finished with a bow.

I couldn't help but wonder, did they practice this? Their minds couldn't actually be connected, right? Which meant that when they locked themselves in the room, they practiced this twin speech…wicked. Unfortunately, it didn't seem like Hermione agreed with me.

"If you don't have anything useful to say, then at least let me go."She grumbled, "I would rather read my History of Magic book once more than stay here and listen to you two prattle."

Both the twins chuckled at that, "'History of magic,' she says," And then, they pulled out something that was even more weird than Snape washing his hair once a week. Yeah, I still couldn't believe that one.

"What's that?" Ginny asked the twin who was holding two rubber ears that were made to look like a human's and tied with a string. I couldn't help anymore and I decided to step down the stairs and join the group. This looked interesting after all.

The group as a whole noticed me, and the change was immediate. Ron and Ginny went silent while Hermione bounded towards me, her arms opened for one of her legendary hugs.

"Not now, Hermione," I told her and I won't lie; it pained me to see her expression fall from happiness to despair. I was of half mind to just leave it all and hug her. Still, she needed to understand that what she had done wasn't what friends did.

Ron was about to say something, but Ginny held him back. Good for him too as I was more in the mood to talk with my fists than with my mouth. I ignored him and looked at the twins, "What are those?"

"These, my dear Harrykins, are the Extendable Ears!" George announced, taking this moment to dissipate the tension that was steadily building up and held the contraption as if it is a priceless artifact.

"Extendable ears? What do they do?" Ginny asked as she stepped forward before she suddenly looked at me and took a step back, averting her eyes.

Oh, how I would like that one day when the girl finally got over her crush. I mean, she looks pretty good now and the crush wasn't as bad as it was when I first met her and she used to run out of the room I stepped in. Still…my friend's sister having a crush on me and doing weird things was not something I ever wanted.

"They do as their names suggest, Gin-Gin." The right twin said and started to slowly drop one of the ears down the balcony, "They capture sound from one end and send it to the other one."

The left twin held the other ear in his hand and pointed it towards the ceiling for all of us to hear. At first I thought that this was another of the twins' jokes and that soon enough they would shout 'Gotcha, dumbheads!' and laugh at us.

But that didn't happen. Nope, not at all.

"-Don't let them know about it. We only have-"

Voices, still too low and not very clear, but they were there! Somehow, the twins had been able to make something that could give us everything about the meeting without even being present down there.

"Bloody h-"

But Hermione immediately closed Ron's mouth and made a 'shush' gesture. Ron looked at me before mouthing 'Bloody hell!' I didn't say anything, what did he expect? Instead, I focused on the voices that were coming from the ear.

"-are getting more reckless by the day! They are demanding to be included in the meetings too." Mrs Weasley is definitely talking about us.

"They are young minds, Molly," Dumbledore said, "We can never restrain a young mind and an old soul. They will manage to get what they want the most."

"Still, Albus, you told us yourself that we can't let such information reach our children or their lives would be in danger." Mrs Weasley's voice had that tint of worry in it that was not usually seen in her.

"We can't let the information reach them, and do what? Wait for Voldemort to get his hands on the weapon he wants most?" Sirius barked out and I looked at Hermione, who frowned at the ear.

"Nothing will happen to that as long as you keep your trap door shut, Black." My eyes widened along with others as we recognised that voice, "Merlin knows you are worse than a babbling banshee when it comes to your godson."

"You wanna test me on this, Snivellus?" Sirius growled at Snape, the person who none of us could ever believe was actually part of the Order.

"Snape is part of the Order?" Ron whispered in shock looking at us. No, Ron, that was most definitely Santa Claus, what gave it away? I didn't say anything as my focus was more on the things that were being discussed in the meeting. Voldemort is after a weapon? What could that weapon be and if he was after it, what sort of destruction would it cause?

"Severus…Sirius, you are not children anymore. Try to behave like adults in each other's company." Dumbledore gave a tired sigh before there was a distinct sound of someone clapping.

"Before we commence this meeting to order, I would like to introduce someone today. They'll be joining the order and I am sure some of you might have already seen them as they were present last year at Hogwarts too." Dumbledore said and all other voices coming from the ear immediately stopped.

~meow~

We peeked down and I could see the reason for that cat's noise. Crookshanks was fascinated with the hanging ear and was playing with it. This was why the ear wasn't not able to catch Dumbledore's voice either. Hermione started trying her level best to get the orange cat's attention to no avail.

"-like you all to….. ~meow~ the newest member to the order of the ~meow~ Miss-"

And the rest was cut off as Crookshanks jumped on the ear and tore it off the cord that was connecting it to the other one. Thereby destroying our only method of gaining the minutes of the meeting.

Ron groaned and cursed Crookshanks which Hermione didn't like at all, therefore they started bickering as we all headed off to our rooms and called it a night.

"Harry?"

I turned to look at Ginny, "Yes, Ginny?"

"Why are you going upstairs? Your things are in the room you'll be sharing with Ron." She told me as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. And maybe for her, it was.

"Sirius gave me a different room." I told them and I watched Ron's face, waiting for him to say something. Unfortunately, he didn't, which was quite weird because I had expected him to be the most vocal against me.

Well, this was boring.

So I left them standing there, looking at my back as I moved upstairs and towards Regulus' room. My mind was a whirlwind of thoughts as I tried to focus on two main things: The new member who joined Order today was apparently present at Hogwarts throughout last year, and the secret weapon that Voldemort needed and what it could do.

I reached the door with a door-mat and unlocked it. The room was fairly normal with a Green and silver snake pattern carpet, a desk, a cupboard and a bed with green sheets and green curtain around it. It was a bit too green for my Gryffindor tastes. But beggars can't be choosers, right? At least it was cleaner than most of the house.

There was a tap on the window and I moved ahead to open it, Hedwig swooped inside and hovered over my head before she settled on my shoulder. I petted my snowy-white owl, my first friend who had been with me through thick-and-thin. She somehow understood me better than others.

I was quite surprised that she had been able to find me here, under the Fidelius charm. But she had always been able to find me, no matter where or how far I was. So, I didn't give it much thought.

"Yes, Hed, this will be our place for the time being. We won't ever live in our previous house now." Hedwig gave an excited 'hoot' and then nipped at my hair, the way she showed her affection. I couldn't help but smile at the owl, she had been one of the best things that had happened in my life.

Soon enough, Hedwig took off from my shoulder and went outside. Probably to hunt. It was good to know that she was enjoying herself now. Poor bird had suffered the same as me, if not more.

Since my trunk was still in Ron's room, I didn't have the luxury of changing into my sleepwear. Therefore, I decided to bring the trunk first thing tomorrow morning, and fell on the bed.

I didn't know when sleep took over, but I was probably asleep after the first ten seconds.

"You need to know that what I do is not for you to judge. You wizards have always taken magic for granted."

I looked at the weird house that's present in front of me. The garden was rotten and I was standing in a graveyard of sorts, this looked like the graveyard where Voldemort came from, still it looked a lot cleaner.

"The power would be unfathomable. I will combine your magic with my very cells, my whole body will be saturated with divine power…"

I looked around and yet all I could see was barren wastelands, nothing…absolutely nothing looked lively. Dead plants, dry barren land full of cracks criss-crossing through it.

"You will know the pain, Harry Potter! The pain that my family gave me! You will suffer the pain that I have suffered for this long!" The voice resonated through the entire landscape.

"Who are yo-"

And my world turned bright as I screamed in pain, the scream suppressed by a huge bang that silenced everything around it..

My eyes opened abruptly and I immediately felt a foreign presence in my room. I didn't know how I was able to even sense it because the entire room was clogged in utter darkness. There was not a single source of light barring the lamp that was extinguished.

"Who are yo-"

But before I could finish, there was weight on my chest, a hand on my mouth and a cold steel blade on my neck.
