The students stood, shocked and silent, until pandemonium erupted. Some students sprinted to get Headmaster Dumbledore and Madame Pomfrey; others started crowing at their Professor, who was still not moving and was very pale. The Professor's long buttoned cloak was melted, and there were visible burns across his chest from the acidic potions. Hermione sprung into action at once, using her wand to quickly clean up the mess before kneeling by his side and checking his pulse, avoiding the broken potion bottles . "He's alive," she exclaimed, relieved. He's unconscious, but we shouldn't move him until we know how serious his injuries are."
At that moment, Severus moaned, and his face twisted in pain. His left hand moved to hold onto his right wrist, and his eyes shut with a grimace. Hermione rubbed the Professor's shoulder encouragingly and murmured, "Harry, can you conjure me some ice? I think his wrist is hurting him - it's probably broken." Then, she turned back to Severus and said, "Professor, you've had a bad fall. Help is coming, you're going to be okay". Severus moaned again and motioned towards his chest. He was in so much pain that tears were coming out of his eyes, despite him trying not to cry, and he was breathing too quickly. Hermione remembered an old healing spell she read in a book and cast it over his chest while Harry held the ice on his wrist. Hermione stroked his forehead and said, "Professor, breathe. In and out, slowly. Madame Pomfrey will be here very shortly." This seemed to relax him a little, and he closed his eyes and waited. Hermione wasn't sure if he was still conscious.
