Chapter One

The air between the three seated at the table in the living room was tense. Kagome avoided looking at either man as she waited for her mother to get back and save her from the expectant stares the two sent her way. She didn't like the way they looked at her, so she pretended she was oblivious to them. If only to keep them from trying to strike a conversation up.

"Sorry it took so long!" Her mother's voice came as a saving grace. At once, Kagome glanced up at the older woman as she came to join them at the table, gently setting down a tray with four teacups.

Deep down, Kagome knew she was the only one of them all actually counting down the seconds until her mother got back.

This wasn't how she anticipated her return from the past going, that much she knew for certain.

"Ryuu… unfortunately was never able to fully explain, but he told me enough for me to understand," her mother said once she got settled beside her. "This visit..-. It's about that, isn't it?"

Kagome felt her hands tighten in the material of her skirt at the mention of her father. She, admittedly, didn't have a lot of memories of him. More than Souta did, sure, but even then, that wasn't many.

"It would seem that his daughter has inherited more than just his looks," one of the men remarked. Kagome glanced at him, unable to help the guarded gleam that shone within her eyes. "The effort you take to mask the presence of the jewel alone is telling enough."

The comment, made directly to her, made her eyes narrow. At the same time, her hand moved to wrap tightly around the jewel- placed as a charm on the bracelet she wore.

"Ensure she has her things packed by Friday," one remarked as they both rose to their feet. Kagome was confused by the statement. "She will be moved into the dorms before her start at the school."

"Wait, what are you talking about?" Kagome finally spoke up, rising to her feet not even a full second after those words had been spoken by them. "My school doesn't have dorms."

"Tokyo Jujutsu High is the school you will be attending. Your age places you as a second year, and your experience with the jewel places you well above the skill necessity required."

It was stated in a matter-of-fact tone, as if the decision had already been made. She hadn't agreed to any of that!

There was no room left for her to argue as they turned to leave, leaving her with nothing more than the reminder of when she needed to have her things ready to go.

She was stuck in a state of disbelief. She could feel her mother observing her from where she sat. Like many times before in her lifetime, her mother was the first to break the silence that had swept over the room.

She heard a faint shuffle coming from behind her as her mother got up from the table. She crossed the short distance over to her, gently placing a warm hand on her shoulder. "Aren't you excited, Kagome?" The soft tone was one she was very familiar with. "This'll be great for-"

"No, I'm not," Kagome found her voice before her mother could finish what she was intending to say. At the same time, she turned to face the older woman. "What about the school I worked so hard to get accepted into?" she questioned. "You know, the normal one with my friends?"

She'd worked so hard to even be one of the candidates for that school, and now what? That was all for nothing? She was just supposed to suck it up and move on, and go to some school for Jujutsu? What about the school she'd had her heart set on? All the effort and strife she struggled with through the literal war she was going through was just all wasted?

"Oh, Kagome," her mother attempted to be reassuring, but it did very little to help. "In the long run, this school will help you, especially when it comes to your abilities and the jewel."

"I don't want to worry about any of that anymore," Kagome responded in a matter-of-fact tone. "It's done and over with. I just want to live a normal life, far away from demons or curses or whatever it is anymore." She didn't want to worry about any of it.

Didn't she get a say in how her life would go? The look on her mother's face made her heart feel heavy in her chest.

"It's not as simple as you want it to be, Kagome," her mother responded. "It wouldn't be safe for anyone if you went to a normal school, because of the jewel. Deep down, I know you know that, just as much as they do," she said, referring to those who'd just departed from the shrine.

Of course, she knew that but…-

Thinking back to all the effort she'd struggled to put forth when her life was turned completely upside down, and now knowing it was all for nothing…- She was frustrated, and rightfully so. Whoever gave them permission to tell her what she needed to do, how to live her life?

"Just…-" her mother trailed off with a gentle look. "Go through with this," she said, "once you've graduated and finished with school, you can decide for yourself just what you want to do. You'll have the strength and knowledge to do what you feel is best for you and everyone around you."

It was a compromise. One that she knew hadn't been offered by the ones who'd left the shrine moments ago. But, at the same time, what they didn't know wouldn't hurt anyone. After a few minutes, Kagome reluctantly nodded.

She'd do it, but she wouldn't be happy about it…

The atmosphere of the school had a familiar feel to it, but it didn't do anything to appease the annoyance she felt brimming within the pit of her stomach. She had conceded at her mother's reassurance, but this… It wasn't the school she had her sights set on attending.

It felt so large, but… there weren't many people to be observed. Even with her senses, she couldn't feel a lot of people present. There were some, sure, but nothing that seemed like it could count as a school's worth.

She'd arrived Friday night. Having taken Saturday and Sunday to get accommodated and adjusted in the room that would be her dorm, she hadn't taken the time to do any exploration. Well, not physically, at least. She had examined the grounds closely with her senses, trying hard to get a clear read on those present.

Standing before the closed door felt like such a concrete decision. From where she stood, she could hear the faint sounds of people bickering from the other side. The moment the door opened, it felt as if that would seal her fate to this life of chaos and utter misfortune. She found herself missing her friends more and more, the longer she stood there.

Rules and regulations…. Blah blah blah, they were nothing but a waste of time. Especially when she had no desire to be caught there.

Her hands moved to tuck back behind her back. Her hand curled around her wrist, where the jewel rested on her bracelet.

A hand fell to land gently on the top of her head. The gesture was surely meant to come off as comforting, and it pulled her from her thoughts. She glanced up at the man who had been standing alongside her. She'd met him earlier upon her arrival, where she promptly learned that he'd be her teacher, Yaga Masamichi.

He was a tall man with short dark hair, dark eyes, and a goatee and mustache. In meeting him, she had gotten a good read on him. Enough so that she was confident in the type of person he was.

He didn't rush her, despite how she'd been standing there for almost five minutes now. His touch was enough of a reminder that she couldn't just stand there for the rest of the day, no matter how much she wanted to avoid crossing the line that'd inevitably mark her as a student there.

"Are you ready?"

The question came across as nothing more than a casual inquiry. There was no hint of a rush to his words whatsoever. A few more minutes of silence from her seemed to answer his question at first. With a sigh, she eventually nodded.

"I guess so," she responded when she found the words to say. Were those words the honest truth? No, they weren't. He seemed to know that if the gentle ruffle of her hair told her anything. It came across as comforting, somewhat reassuring in a way. A second later, his hand fell as he moved to open the door. He entered the room first, leaving a path for her to follow.

At the door opened, Kagome noted how the bickering she'd been hearing from the other side seemed to die down entirely. Without even having to look, she could tell that Yaga was waiting for her to follow him into the room. She sighed, her hands behind her back falling to rest at her sides.

All she had to do was make it to the end of her school career. Once that was over, she could return to normalcy…- She just had to have patience and endure the unpleasantness.

"We have a late addition to the second years," Yaga stated, holding a hand out to motion to her. She avoided glancing at any of those present in the room. With her and Yaga, that made five total, so it was an easy feat. "Prior circumstances prevented Higurashi Kagome from joining you earlier, but none of that matters anymore."

She felt them observing her. It's only fair. Especially when she was doing the same in her own way. She didn't have to see them to get a good look at them, after all.

Only four students made for a small class.

Auroua-chan: Kagome's far from pleased right now. She had no interest in getting involved with curses following the end of her journeys, but can anyone really blame her? She just wants a normal life, but even that's out of reach for her.

At least Yaga is patient with her, so she's not as bothered by things.

Geto, Gojo, or Shoko? Which will be the first that she actually connects with?

Anyway, that's it for now! Thanks for reading, and I hope you all enjoyed! Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.
