Part 1

"You heard the news?" was what Ino greeted her with when Sakura plopped down next to her, ready to eat her lunch.

"Good news or bad news?" Sakura asked idly, taking her bento out of her bag.

Ino grinned, curling a strand of her blonde hair around her finger. "Good news for everyone with eyes," she replied amused.

"For anyone with eyes?" Sakura repeated bemused. "Come on, tell me: what's the news?"

"Sasuke-kun's going to join us on the lake trip!" Ino chirped excitedly, clapping her hands together. The move made her bracelets rattle against each other, producing a high pitched noise.

"No way!" Sakura gaped in shock. Her eyes automatically sought out the boy in question.

Sasuke was sitting next to one of the windows; a book absorbing his complete attention while his bento sat untouched in front of him on the table. The sunlight dappling through the window highlighted the blue hints in his black hair and it took Sakura a lot of effort to tear her gaze off him.

"You're joking," she insisted, because Sasuke had never before agreed to join their group on their annual lake trip.

It wasn't for a lack of trying on their part, though. They asked Sasuke to join them on their lake trip every single time, but the dark haired boy had never shown any interest – until now apparently. What had changed? Not that Sakura was complaining! Having Sasuke finally join them on their trip and have the chance to see him in swimwear? Hell yeah!

"I'm not," Ino grinned. "I wouldn't joke about something like this, you know that. He really is going to join us. He told me and Shikamaru this morning."

"When did he do that?" Sakura asked surprised. They all shared the same classes, how could she have missed that?

"It was before you arrived," Ino explained. "Didn't have the chance yet to tell you until now, but yes, he's finally joining us! Better late than never, huh?"

"So who's going to the lake then? We've got the full list now, right?" Sakura inquired curiously.

Considering the trip was this weekend already, she thought it was safe to assume that with Sasuke joining them their group was now complete. She doubted that more people would join them in the next two days.

"You, me, Sasuke-kun, Shikamaru, Tenten, Suigetsu, Karin, Kiba and Naruto," Ino answered. "Hinata-chan was planning on coming too, but apparently she's got some family event to attend this weekend."

Sakura wasn't listening to the explanation about Hinata's absence, though, as her attention had been grabbed by one name in particular. "Naruto's joining us?" She frowned, tapping her fingers against the table.

Like the devil himself, Naruto entered the cafeteria, as always using a wheelchair to get around. Uzumaki Naruto he was called and he had moved to their town a few years ago. An accident before he had moved here had landed him in a wheelchair and apparently physical therapy wasn't going well considering he had to use a wheelchair basically the entire time to go around. He wasn't fully paralysed according to his introduction during his first day, but walking wasn't something he could easily do, hence the physical therapy.

Sakura couldn't say she liked him. He was incredibly loud and obnoxious; two things she could have ignored if not for the fact that he always hung around Sasuke. Almost from the very beginning the annoying idiot had latched onto Sasuke as if he had any right to do that, acting like it was only normal to behave like Sasuke's best friend. It irked Sakura a lot to see that, especially because Sasuke didn't appear to be particularly bothered by Naruto's inability to leave him alone. She had been trying for years to get closer to Sasuke and this jerk just wiggled himself into Sasuke's life like it was nothing? It was ridiculous!

And now he was suddenly joining them on their trip? When he had never done that before?

As she watched, Naruto rolled his wheelchair straight to the table Sasuke was occupying, slapping it in an obnoxiously loud manner to announce his presence – as if the squeaking of his wheelchair didn't alert everyone to his presence already. Sasuke looked up from his book, smiling at Naruto before opening his bento while the blond boy took out his own lunch.

"Yeah, he came up to me not long after Sasuke-kun had told us he would come," Ino said and shrugged.

"I thought he had a fear of water?" It was why one of the rumours regarding his mysterious accident was about him possibly having crashed into the water with a car at some point, leading to the injury that had landed him into a wheelchair.

He had never bothered to accompany them on their lake trip before, even though Kiba and Shikamaru had invited him before. What had changed?

Ino shrugged again. "Beats me. All I know is that he's going to join us."

"What even is he going to do if he's too scared to go into the water?" Sakura asked incredulously. Just sit in his wheelchair on the grass the entire time? That would be lame. "He can't swim, right?"

"Enjoy the sun?" Ino suggested idly and sipped from her water. "I don't know, don't care either. Focus on this instead: Sasuke-kun in just his swimsuit," she smirked.

Sakura smiled in response, but couldn't help but glance at Naruto again, who was gesturing wildly while he was running his mouth to Sasuke. She turned away with a quiet huff and started eating.

Whatever, let that idiot join then; not like he would be able to do much, stuck in his wheelchair.

The sun was already shining brightly by the time they arrived at the lake. The lake itself was big, located at the outskirts of their town and a popular destination throughout spring and summer. The water itself was clear, inviting everyone to take a dip in it and nearby a row of small cottages had been built, which could be rented out for a whole week. They were owned by the Hyuuga family, but being friends with Hinata meant that their group always received a heavy discount whenever they spent the weekend here. They were responsible for their own food and drinks, but was never an issue.

As Sakura stepped out of the car, thanking Ino's dad for driving them, she saw a minivan slowing down in the corner from her eye. She looked up, shielding her eyes with her hand from the sun, and watched a handsome blond man get out of the van. His blond hair was awfully familiar, though, and she quickly realised why when he walked to the back of the van and unloaded a wheelchair out of it. He unfolded the wheelchair and rolled it over to the passenger's seat which opened, revealing Naruto.

Naruto's dad, because who else could it be, helped him get into the wheelchair and they exchanged some words; something that had Naruto laughing and the older man smiling. Both blonds turned their heads when another car rolled to a stop not far from the van and Sakura's heart sped up when Sasuke stepped out of the car, dressed in a white T-shirt and plain jeans. He had a pair of sunglasses on which he took off before he bent down and spoke to the person behind the wheel. His mother, father, brother perhaps? God, he looked so good, though!

She couldn't help but sigh when he walked to the boot and bent down to grab his bag, offering her a nice view of his back. Yep, he definitely looked good from all sides.

"The lake always has a nice view, hm?" Karin popped up next to her, smirking knowingly.

"You know it," Sakura agreed good-naturedly, though her mood soured a bit when she saw Sasuke making a beeline for Naruto instead of greeting the rest of them first.

Sasuke exchanged a couple of words with Naruto's father before the older man nodded and stepped back into the van, driving away while Naruto waved way too enthusiastically like he was a small kid instead of a seventeen year old. When the van disappeared from view, Naruto quit the ridiculous waving and grabbed Sasuke's shirt instead, grinning up at him while he was saying something.

She wrenched her eyes away from the irritating sight and asked, "Is everybody here now?"

"Yep, everyone's here," Kiba confirmed, shoving his own pair of sunglasses on his face. He stretched his arms and whistled. "Looks like we picked a very good weekend for the trip. Weather forecast says it won't rain until next Tuesday."

"Of course, why do you think I reserved the two cottages for this weekend?" Ino sniffed and closed the door to the car, giving her dad a quick wave while he drove off. "No sense in planning a lake trip if the weather was going to be shit."

"We're going to the cottages first?" Suigetsu inquired, not so subtly ogling Karin who had already removed her T-shirt, leaving her in a short skirt and a bikini top.

She flipped him off without even looking at him, which made him grin.

"Yeah, easier to put our stuff away at first," Ino said, retrieving the set of keys from her bag. "Got the keys here. We'll drop off our bags first and then we can come back here."

"We're going swimming already?" Shikamaru asked dubiously.

She slapped his arm lightly. "Don't be like that. Just because you're lazy doesn't mean the rest of us doesn't enjoy swimming," she retorted. "Don't even know why you keep joining us when you're too lazy for any physical activity."

"I do swim," he argued. "I just enjoy the peaceful environment more; there's nothing wrong with resting during the weekend."

"Don't you rest during the week as well?" Naruto broke in suddenly; his blue eyes grinning.

It didn't escape Sakura's attention that Sasuke was holding onto the wheelchair. "Are you going to wheel him around the entire weekend, Sasuke-kun?" she asked neutrally.

If Naruto had only joined to make Sasuke wait on him hand and foot the entire weekend, he could have saved them all the trouble. He couldn't expect Sasuke to wheel him around the entire time, could he? She knew he could be an idiot, but he couldn't be that stupid and rude, surely.

"No, I'll get the hang of this kind of ground soon," Naruto replied dismissively. "It has just been a while since I last had to use a wheelchair on this type of grass."

"Only one of the cottages has a ramp," Ino said apologetically. "So unfortunately you won't be able to choose which one."

Sakura didn't understand why she was so apologetic about that. It wasn't as if they had forced Naruto to join them, so he couldn't expect everything to be tailored to his needs all of a sudden.

"It's fine; it's not like I have a preference," he said dismissively again, adjusting the large bag on his lap.

"I hope you got something else aside from ramen in that bag," Sasuke said dryly as they all started to make their way to the two rented cottages.

Naruto pouted, truly looking like a little kid now. "Of course I have, bastard. I've got clothes and things like that in it as well."

That was just another thing that ticked off Sakura badly: how Naruto thought it was acceptable to use 'bastard' as a nickname for Sasuke. What the hell was wrong with him?

"But you're not denying the ramen part," Sasuke sighed, steering the wheelchair in the direction of the cottage with the ramp in front of it.

"Shikamaru said we could all bring food!" Naruto protested and embraced the bag tightly as if anyone would be interested in stealing it.

"Yes, exactly, food," Kiba snickered.

"Oh fuck off, dog breath!"

Sakura inhaled deeply, reminding herself that it was only for the weekend that she was stuck with the idiot. Better to focus on something a lot more important: Sasuke himself. The thought of seeing him in swimwear soon in a setting that wasn't swim class related perked her up enough that she could even drown out Naruto's stupid argument about ramen of all things.

The weekend was off to a great start. The weather was incredibly nice, the lake was pretty, the water just warm enough to swim in it and Sasuke looked amazing in just his black swimming trunks. Truly, Sasuke's body was a blessing from the gods themselves if Sakura actually believed in them and for a while just the sight of Sasuke swimming near her was enough to make her forget Naruto's presence back at the lake's edge.

That was until a little while after dinner and she realised that neither Sasuke nor Naruto were in the cottage anymore.

"Does anyone know where Sasuke-kun is?" she asked curiously after she had checked all the rooms upstairs.

Suigetsu looked up from the way too large sundae he was making, considering they had finished dinner just over an hour ago. "Think they went back to the lake or so," he replied and shrugged.

"They?"

"He and Naruto," he specified and grabbed the whipped cream. "I didn't hear them come back yet so they should still be there, I guess. Hey, think anyone took sprinkles with them?"

"How should I know? I didn't take anything with me to decorate ice cream," she mumbled and walked out of the kitchen; her curiosity piqued.

It was still only spring so it wouldn't be light outside for much longer anymore. What were they doing at the lake when it was becoming dark?

Dusk was actually already settling in when she made her way outside, following the pebbled path to the lake. The tiny stones crunched quietly underneath her slippers. Crickets were chirping all around her while the occasional mosquito buzzed past her ear, making her slap at it in reflex.

She spotted the wheelchair first, but was confused to discover that it was empty. A quick look around showed Naruto close to the lake's edge, seated on a large towel on the ground –

While Sasuke was drying off his legs.

They were both dressed down to swimming trunks only and Naruto's damp hair suggested he had actually been in the lake just now. What the hell? The entire day he had spent on the grass underneath a parasol, claiming he couldn't go into the water – and now he was here, damp, clearly having gone into the lake while Sasuke was drying him off?!

"I thought you weren't interested in the lake?" she said coolly, coming to a stop just a few steps away from them.

Sasuke continued drying off Naruto's legs like it was the most normal thing to do in the world, but Naruto was visibly startled. He jumped slightly; his fingers hooking into the towel underneath him.

"Ah, erm, it's not like I'm not interested in the lake," he hedged and laughed awkwardly. "It's just … easier to peddle around a bit if not everyone is watching. I didn't want to bother you guys during the day."

"So you took him out to the lake now?" she asked Sasuke, who briefly looked up, raising an eyebrow.

"Obviously," he replied dryly.

"Why are you even drying him off?" she huffed, resting her hands on her hips. "If he can peddle around in the water enough not to drown, he can towel himself off, no?"

Naruto flushed immediately, proving that he realised how ridiculous this looked, but Sasuke simply clucked his tongue and finished drying off Naruto's feet, turning the towel around before wrapping it around Naruto's shoulders.

"What's wrong with helping out my boyfriend?" Sasuke asked calmly, as if his answer wasn't actually an entire bombshell that he had just dropped onto Sakura without any warning whatsoever!

"What do you mean, your boyfriend?" she spluttered shocked, wondering if maybe she had hit her head somehow without having realised it. That had to be the reason why she thought she had just heard him say that Naruto was –

"Exactly like I said: my boyfriend," Sasuke repeated unbothered and grabbed another towel to start drying himself off.

"Since when?" she demanded; her voice turning a bit shrill, but she thought she could be forgiving for that considering what she had just heard!

How could Sasuke be gay?! He had never shown any signs before that he was into guys! Hell, he had never shown any interest in someone all these years!

"We made it official a few weeks ago," Sasuke replied calmly while Naruto stared down at his lap, his entire face as red as a tomato.

"You never mentioned that before!" she exclaimed shocked.

They had already been dating for several weeks? How had none of them noticed that before? How could they have not known?

"Why should we have mentioned that before?" Sasuke asked critically. "It's none of your business."

"Well, it would have been nice to know," she spluttered; her skin feeling too hot all of a sudden even though the air itself was rather cool.

"Why?" Sasuke stood up, balling the towel together and shoving it into a bag she hadn't noticed earlier. "Again, it's none of your business who I or Naruto date."

She could only stand there and gape in shock as Sasuke brought the wheelchair to Naruto, who still sat there with his shoulders hunched, acting like he couldn't move at all. Sasuke helped him back in his chair before he helped him turn around and they made their way back to the cottage, leaving Sakura behind at the lake.

When the sound of pebbles crunching underneath a set of wheels died out, she came out of her stupor and balled her hands to fists; fury building up inside her like she was a volcano about to explode.

That goddamn, sneaky fucker! Going behind all their backs and snatching Sasuke away from them as if he wasn't aware that she and so many other girls were in love with Sasuke! No wonder he suddenly decided to join them on their trip: it was all to cling to his boyfriend!

He had some goddamn nerve, pulling that crap, acting like he and Sasuke were just friends. Had he been making fun of her and the others this entire time? If she hadn't caught them just now, would he have continued lying about him and Sasuke? Could he be lying about other things as well? Clearly he wasn't so stuck to his wheelchair if he could get into the lake just fine!

The absolute nerve of that jerk!

Just wait, if he thought he could make fun of them all, she would show him.

She waited until the others had gone to sleep before making her way downstairs to the only bedroom available there. Naturally that one had been given to Naruto because he couldn't go up the stairs with his wheelchair – supposedly. Who knew? If he could keep his relationship with Sasuke a secret, maybe he was lying about his true progress with physical therapy as well. It wouldn't surprise her.

She halted in front of the door and knocked on it; not loud enough to draw attention of the others on the first floor but loud enough normally to gain Naruto's attention.

It worked. There was the muffled squeaky sound of the wheelchair, a short pause, before the door opened slowly and Naruto blinked up owlishly at her.

"Oh, Sakura-chan," he said surprised. "I, erm, I didn't expect to see you here."

No, he had done his utmost best to avoid looking at her the entire evening after she caught him and Sasuke at the lake.

She plastered a contrite smile on her face and linked her hands behind her back. "I came to apologise for how I behaved earlier this evening. I shouldn't have reacted like that," she lied through her teeth.

"Oh, it's fine. I know it must have come as a surprise to you," he smiled awkwardly and rubbed the back of his neck.

"It was a complete surprise," she agreed and smiled a bit chagrined. "I have to admit I didn't expect that at all, but I guess I got a bit blinded by my own crush on him. That doesn't excuse how I acted, though. You're the one he decided to date, so that's just something I have to accept."

"I'm sorry," he mumbled, looking incredibly out of his depth.

"What are you apologising for? It's just how it is," she said airily. She jerked her head in the direction of the front door. "Actually as part of my apology, I wanted to show you something. You haven't been to this lake before, have you? Before today, I mean."

He shook his head, regarding her curiously.

She smiled at him, clenching her hands into fists behind her back. "Well, how about I show you a sight that makes this lake so popular?"
