AN: I'd like to stress that there will be a lot of cheating in this and the characters being toxic and doing some really shitty things. So, this is your final warning to click away if its not something you'd like to read.
With that though, I really hope you enjoy! This fic will have pretty inconsistent updates, but it will not be abandoned. I'm really looking forward to writing this one and sharing it with all of you.
Chapter 1: The Dangers of Alcohol
Hiccup tapped the end of his pencil repeatedly against his forehead, hoping that if he tapped enough, it would force ideas into his head. He'd been trying to write the essay using this method for 5 minutes now and had not had such luck.
Class was ending soon anyway, so Hiccup decided it wasn't worth the effort anymore.
His head tingled in the absence of the pencil, so Hiccup idly rubbed at the spot for a moment, his eyes fixed on the clock at the front of the room. It felt like time had stubbornly slowed down, to the point Hiccup momentarily considered how much trouble he'd get in for walking out in the last 5 minutes, and if the consequences were worth it. He rolled his eyes and slumped in his chair, arms firmly crossed over his chest.
Needing something to do with his hands, Hiccup began fiddling with one of the small braids in his hair, a constant habit of his. It was one of the reasons he continued to let little Sophie do the little braids – they were nice to have. Most importantly, if Sophie liked them, then so did he. Which reminded him, with all the fidgeting he'd been doing with the braids, he'd have to ask the girl to redo them this afternoon.
When the bell finally rang, Hiccup was practically halfway out the door.
"Hiccy!" That afternoon, Hiccup was greeted by a very excited Sophie almost as soon as he'd knocked on the door to the Bennett's place. She was jumping up and down, arms up towards Hiccup in a clear message of 'pick me up!'
Hiccup laughed affectionately and bent down so he could pick her up, groaning slightly on the way up from how heavy she was becoming. Hiccup could hard to believe little Sophie was a lot less little – she was turning 7 later that year.
Hiccup had been babysitting for a few years now, and it was a nice little arrangement. While he appreciated the extra cash, he loved getting to spend time with Jamie and Sophie for a few hours twice a week, and had developed a special bond with the two.
"Hello, Sophie!" Hiccup walked into the house, kicking the door shut behind him as he often did. He was very used to the routine by now.
Hiccup would arrive at the Bennett's shortly after 3:15, after the bus had dropped Sophie and Jamie home. Sophie would wait excitedly by the door for Hiccup, meaning Mrs. Bennett could get ready for work in relative peace.
True to form, Mrs. Bennett was in the kitchen, quickly tying her short hair into a ponytail. Mrs. Bennett worked as a nurse and had to work afternoon shifts from Friday to Monday each week. As such, Hiccup babysat Sophie and Jamie for a few hours most Monday's and Friday's, until their older brother got home at around 7.
"Oh, hi Hiccup! How are you today?" Mrs. Bennet turned as she heard Hiccup walk into the kitchen, smiling over at him around a piece of apple.
"I'm good, Mrs. Bennet. How are you?"
"That's good to hear. I'm good as well."
Hiccup nodded, bending down to finally put Sophie back on the ground when she became too much.
"Thank you again for looking after these two."
"It's not a problem at all, you know I love doing it."
"You're an angel Hiccup." She sighed gratefully, as she did every time. Hiccup smiled in return.
"Oh! It completely slipped my mind, but you don't need to come around on Monday. I'm taking Jamie and Sophie up to visit my parents, and we'll be gone from tomorrow until Tuesday."
"Oh, ok. I hope you guys have a good time." It took a moment, but he suddenly remembered, "Wait, is Jack not going as well?"
Mrs. Bennett shook her head slightly. "No, he didn't want to come, since he has an exam to study for that week."
Hiccup stifled a smirk. Studying his ass.
"Well, thanks for letting me know then. Want me to babysit him instead?" Hiccup joked, earning a small laugh from Sophie's mum.
"I'd never hear the end of it if I tried to get Jack a babysitter."
"Good point. I guess I'll just stick to babysitting Sophie, won't I, Sophie!" He suddenly reached down and started tickling the girl who'd comfortably wrapped herself around Hiccup's good leg. She squealed, trying to tickle him back on the calf between fits of giggles.
Mrs. Bennett laughed at the display, happy to see such a good bond between the two.
"Alright Hiccup, I best be off. As always, call me or Jack if you have any issues. I'll see you next Friday?"
"Yep! Have a good shift Mrs. Bennett!"
Using Hiccup's moment of distraction, Sophie ran away laughing.
"Jamie, Sophie, dinner's ready!" Hiccup called a while later, turning off the stove. He picked up Sophie's favourite plate, using tongs to put a sausage onto it before doing the same with a plate for Jamie.
Jamie emerged from his room just as Hiccup was getting his younger sister sorted in her chair, letting her dig into her dinner.
"Hey there buddy. How was your day?"
"Fine." Jamie mumbled, sliding into his chair as Hiccup put his plate in front of the 14-year-old boy.
"Hey, what's up? Are you ok?" Hiccup came around to sit in the chair in front of Jamie, a look of concern on his face.
"Just a long day, you know. Tess friend zoned me."
"Oh no! Jamie, I'm sorry to hear that."
Jamie had told Hiccup at length all about his crush on his classmate, Tess. Hiccup was disappointed for Jamie and understood the feeling all too well.
"I mean, it's kind of sad, but I'm happy to just be her friend as well." Jamie said, looking up from his food to smile at Hiccup.
"That's very big of you to say."
"Yeah, there's no point being too upset about it, she can't help how she feels. At least she still wants to be my friend. That's more than enough for me."
"I'm glad you think so, Jamie. You're a great friend to have." Hiccup smiled genuinely at Jamie, eyes bright.
"Thanks Hiccup. So are you." Hiccup was glad to see Jamie smiling back.
"Hiccyyyy!" Sophie piped up.
"Yesss, Sophie?"
"Nothing!" She said cheerily, a big, goofy smile on her face, smeared with tomato sauce.
"Very funny, Soph."
"Thanks, I know!"
Hiccup laughed, and pointed at her food, eyebrows raised. "Finish your food so you can have a shower and be ready in bed for when Jack gets home."
"Ok, Hiccy!"
"Hiccup?" Jamie spoke up again.
"Hm?" Hiccup mumbled, turning his attention back to Jamie.
"Why aren't you and Jack friends?"
"Huh? What makes you say that?"
Jamie shrugged. "I dunno, you guys just don't seem to get along very well.
Hiccup's eyebrows rose again, wondering how best to go about such a random question. Jamie had a habit of being very blunt. And too observant.
"Well, I guess we just aren't. I've never really thought about it." Hiccup answered, trying to navigate the situation carefully. He didn't want to shit-talk Jamie's older brother straight to Jamie's face. Which, Hiccup had to wonder how such an asshole was related to such nice kids. Well, sort of related.
Jamie made a face like he didn't quite accept Hiccup's answer, and Hiccup just prayed he didn't press further.
"I think you two would make good friends if you gave it a chance. Finally make some other friends beside Flynn." Jamie smirked at Hiccup, and he suddenly saw the resemblance between Jack and Jamie.
"Excuse me, but I have heaps of friends!" Hiccup defended with a laugh.
"Me and Sophie don't count."
Hiccup scoffed in mock hurt. "What? Jamie, I thought we were friends?!"
"Well, of course we are, but I still don't count."
Hiccup shook his head but gave in, hands raised in surrender. "Ok ok, whatever you say kid."
Hiccup had just gotten Sophie to settle down and sleep when he heard the front door open, just past 7.
Hiccup walked down to the living room to see Jack shrugging off his jacket, leaving it on the arm of the couch.
"Hey. Dinner is in a container in the fridge as always. Just sausages and macaroni and cheese. Sophie just went to sleep, and Jamie was reading in bed last I checked."
The 'hand-over' was always as quick as possible, for both of their sake's.
"Cool, thanks." Jack said over his shoulder as he walked into the kitchen.
Hiccup rolled his eyes. Then, suddenly breaking from the careful routine, Hiccup followed him.
"Jamie was asking some questions tonight as well."
"Questions?" Jack repeated without turning around, pulling out the leftovers for his dinner.
"Yeah, questions. About us. Asking why we aren't friends." Hiccup scoffed. Jack barely contained his scowl.
"I can't imagine why." Jack muttered.
"Right. But I didn't say anything. Just though I'd mention it in case he asks you too."
Jack only 'hmmed' in response. Hiccup was just turning to leave when he spun around again, remembering something else.
"Oh yeah, that also reminds me. I'd go have a talk with him. He was a bit down tonight, said that girl Tess friend zoned him."
That finally got Jack to stop and look at him.
"Ah, poor dude. Thanks for letting me know, Hiccup. I'll go up and talk to him once I've eaten." It was the first time Jack had sounded so genuine and nice when talking to Hiccup. Hell, he'd used his name, which is something Jack never did. In a way, it was nice to see how much Jack clearly cared for his brother. But, more than anything, it was just strange. Way to strange.
The energy in the room immediately shifted again, and Hiccup decided that was enough for the night.
"Yep, no worries. Night."
Hiccup spun around for a final time that night, quickly leaving without another word.
Hiccup couldn't stand parties. There were entirely too many people, and everything was entirely too loud.
He was beginning to question his friendship with Flynn, who'd dragged Hiccup along kicking and screaming. Flynn had spent the whole week trying to convince Hiccup to come, knowing it was futile and he'd end up forcing Hiccup along in the end, no convincing needed.
Hiccup still wasn't sure why or how Flynn was his best friend – Flynn had said something about every extravert having their moody introvert.
Truthfully, Hiccup loved Flynn.
Hiccup did not love Flynn enough for this.
Hiccup scowled, determined that if he made the mood miserable enough, Flynn would have no choice but to take Hiccup back home. Used to Hiccup's tactics, Flynn shoved a drink into Hiccup's hand.
"Come on, Hic. You always complain, but get a few drinks into you, and you have a great time!" Flynn yelled over the music, slinging an arm around Hiccup's shoulders as Flynn took a sip of his own drink.
"If the only thing making me have fun is alcohol, then I'm not really having fun." It was flawed logic, Hiccup knew that, but it was the only argument he had. "Besides, if all we need to have fun is a few drinks, we could have easily gotten drunk at your place, with a lot fewer people."
"Lighten up and drink up, man!" Flynn encouraged, pointedly ignoring Hiccup's complaints. They had this conversation every time, and Hiccup always gave in, if only because the alcohol was so damned convincing.
Hiccup was pulled through the masses of people, doing what he did best by letting Flynn drag him along.
Hiccup sighed dramatically, downing his first drink in one go as he accepted his looming fate, approaching Flynn's group of friends.
Flynn found them sitting in one of the quieter – if you could really even call it that – rooms of Elsa's house, lounging on the large couches.
Flynn let go of Hiccup's hand as he approached his friends, allowing Hiccup to flop unceremoniously onto one of the single armchairs.
Hiccup watched as Flynn said hi to all his friends, going to take a sip of his drink, before realising he'd already finished it moments before. With a small roll of his eyes, he continued raising the cup to his lips, if only to make it look like he was doing something.
Disinterested, Hiccup pulled out his phone to mindlessly scroll, barely paying attention to what he was doing.
At some point, Flynn began making out with some girl, as he always wound up doing. Hiccup glanced around for a moment to avoid looking too long, taking note of who was still in the room. He noticed Jack walk in with his girlfriend and take a seat beside Flynn and the girl, making eye contact with Jack for a moment before tearing his eyes away and playing it off.
Staring intently at his blank phone screen, Hiccup could still see Jack in his periphery as Elsa climbed onto his lap and-
Hiccup screwed his eyes shut. He twisted in the seat to block Jack out, reopening his phone in hopes of finding a distraction. After a few minutes of fruitless searching, he turned his phone back off and sighed to himself.
With nothing else to do, Hiccup rose from his seat, pointedly keeping his eyes locked on the floor, and went off in search of more alcohol, wading through the crowds of dancing teenagers.
He always wondered just where all these people came from.
Easily finding the kitchen where all the drinks were being kept, Hiccup poured himself a shot of something he couldn't be bothered to check, and once again downed it. He winced at the harsh burn and felt as it settled uncomfortably in his stomach, blinking for a few seconds as he accustomed himself with the feeling.
Pouring himself a proper drink of whatever was closest, Hiccup surveyed the rooms he could see just beyond the kitchen. Far too many people, no matter where he went. He could always go back to where he'd come from, but he really didn't feel like being stuck in a room with all…that.
And it wasn't like he was a prude! Far from it, really, but even still…
With nowhere to go, Hiccup just stayed drinking in the kitchen, hoping to kill enough time just standing around until he could probably safely return to the room.
If Flynn was here, he'd be encouraging Hiccup to go and dance with someone – find someone to hook up with even – but…well, actually, if he got just a little more tipsy, he must even do exactly that. After all, Flynn was infuriatingly right about something: he did have a lot of fun once he started drinking. Really broke out of his shell for a few hours, before swearing he'd never drink again.
With that in mind, Hiccup downed another shot and filled his other drink fully, and carefully made his way into one of the adjacent rooms. It would take a few minutes for the alcohol to really take effect, but Hiccup figured there was no harm in trying to put himself out there a little early.
It wasn't that hard to insert himself among people and just start dancing. He felt awkward and stiff, sure, but everyone else around him was far too drunk to care. He even caught himself indeed having fun once the comfortable buzz settled in his mind.
Soon, he found himself dancing with another guy – Naveen? – and indulged in the feeling of the guy's hands on his hips as they clumsily ground against each other. Hiccup had to resist the urge to whine when that feeling left before someone else took Naveen's place.
Hiccup smiled in delight, eagerly resuming his movements when a voice slurred in his ear, "Enjoying yourself, Hiccy?"
He turned to turn around to face Jack, however he was held tightly in place against Jack's body. "Please, don't stop on my account."
With a lazy smirk, Hiccup didn't argue and pressed back into Jack, rolling his hips against him.
Stupid fucking alcohol making him do stupid fucking things. He was never drinking again.
Hiccup felt like his head would explode. He almost wished it would if it meant the pain would stop. Hiccup was seriously, seriously never drinking again.
He went to rub his eyes, only to find that something was weighing his arm down. With a wince, Hiccup slowly opened his eyes against the sunlight streaming into the room, trying to figure out what was keeping him from moving.
After blinking a few times, Hiccup was finally faced with another reason he would never, ever drink again.
Jack was draped across Hiccup, a leg across his waist and one of Jack's arms thrown over Hiccup's chest and arm.
Worst of all, they were both very naked. It didn't take a genius to put two and two together, especially not when Hiccup had the very distinct and uncomfortable feeling of cum dried on his stomach.
"Ohhh, fuck." Hiccup groaned, horrified. "Jack, wake up!" Hiccup half-yelled, despite the fresh wave of pain it sent through his head.
"No, let me sleep." Jack muttered, cuddling closer to Hiccup, eyes firmly shut.
"Jack." Hiccup said firmly, freeing his arm so he could shake the guy awake.
Jack tried to swat him away, before letting out an unimpressed groan. "Fuck, fine, I'm up! Asshole." He grumbled, yet to realise the situation they were in as he slowly opened his eyes. "What's so…"
Jack's eyes snapped open, and Hiccup could feel it as Jack tensed up in horror. Jack all but flew across the room seconds later, putting as much space between him and Hiccup as possible.
"Don't tell me- what did we- oh, fuck no!" Jack exclaimed, looking like he was going through all the stages of grief at once.
It took Jack a second to realise he was still naked and currently on display, but as soon as he did, he frantically looked around for something to cover himself with, finding a pillow that had found its way across the room at some point in the night. Hiccup had already pulled the covers over himself in the process.
In any other situation, seeing Jack so frantic and so unlike himself would have been fucking hilarious. Unfortunately, Hiccup was struggling to indulge in the humour of it all.
"I can't believe…I mean, with you?" Jack muttered, giving Hiccup an accusatory glare.
Hiccup held his hands up in defence, his face screwing up. "Trust me, I'm not exactly thrilled about this either."
"I'm not even- fucking hell, Elsa!" Jack suddenly seemed to realise the true gravity of the situation. Hiccup's eyes widened in response.
"Fuck." That was about the only thing Hiccup could think to say. He always had a real way with words.
"This- this never happened." Jack said in a panic, hurriedly tracking down all his clothing.
"If only that were true." Hiccup muttered sardonically. Jack threw a pillow at him, missing pathetically.
On the bright side, Hiccup's hangover had been thoroughly chased away.
He hadn't said anything to Flynn. Had barely been able to look at the guy. Flynn had been too hungover to notice Hiccup's odd behaviour, and Hiccup was determined to get himself under control by Monday and put the whole unfortunate incident behind him.
Hiccup was very much not under control come Monday, to the point he'd deliberately gotten to school a little late so that he'd be able to avoid seeing Flynn before second period. He was still being tormented with flashes of what went down that night and couldn't seem to chase away the memories that had slowly returned over the weekend.
Hiccup had been mentally kicking himself for how much he was letting this affect him. It was stupid! It happened, it was with Jack, but they were drunk, so it didn't matter.
Even if Jack had cheated on Elsa with Hiccup. And Jack was straight. And Jack and Hiccup hated each other. And… well, the situation was actually pretty fucked up, but Hiccup was still annoyed he was letting it all get to him so badly.
When the bell rang for second period, Hiccup dragged his feet as much as possible. He shared this class with Flynn and Jack, so he was trying to psych himself up with every step.
'You're being stupid, just stop worrying so damn much.'
Despite dragging his feet, Hiccup was still one of the first people in the classroom. Flynn and Jack were still nowhere to be seen, so Hiccup was able to reach his seat in the back row feeling just a little less anxious for the moment.
Needing something to do, Hiccup pulled out his sketchbook to work on the latest drawing he'd started in the class before. He'd become so focused on what he was doing that he startled when Flynn took his seat next to Hiccup and turned to talk to him.
"Hey, where were you this morning?"
"Sorry, overslept." Hiccup shrugged, trying to appear as casual and normal as possible.
Flynn nodded, not thinking too much about it. Hiccup wanted to sigh in relief.
Hiccup looked up as the final few students trailed into the classroom, making the mistake of looking at Jack.
Infuriatingly, Jack seemed to be fine, while Hiccup had been fighting with his mind for 2 days now. Fucking of course.
Thankfully, though, Jack didn't look over at Hiccup.
When class started, Hiccup tried his damnedest to focus on the lesson and not look back over to Jack every 5 seconds. He was mostly successful. Mostly.
"Are you sure you're ok man? You've been out of it all day." Flynn asked for what had to have been the hundredth time that week during lunch on Friday.
He was absolutely not fine, but he nodded anyway, reassuring his friend once again.
Really, he was trying to prepare himself to face Jack that night. And he was still being tormented with the memories of that night despite all his efforts.
"…If you say so." Flynn shrugged as he had every time, and the conversation moved on.
Hiccup hadn't really seen Jack all week. It seemed they'd both been avoiding each other as much as possible. There was none of the usual 'teasing' from Jack and none of the usual sarcasm from Hiccup in retort.
Part of Hiccup was glad for that, as it made dealing with the aftermath of whatever had happened at least that little bit easier to deal with.
Hiccup wasn't sure how it was going to go with hand over tonight. They were usually super quick and easy, barely more than a sentence or two exchanged between them, but even that seemed impossible right now.
Hiccup had been anxiously watching the time since he'd arrived at the Bennet's, being distracted enough at some points for even Sophie to take notice.
Now, with Sophie asleep and Jamie up in his room doing homework, Hiccup was left with little to do but pace around in the living room and check the time every few minutes and prepare for the inevitable.
When he heard the doorknob turning, Hiccup froze before quickly sitting on the couch, trying to appear as normal and non-anxious as possible. He stood in a way he prayed seemed casual as Jack entered the room, opening his mouth to speak but finding the words caught in his throat.
"Uh- Sophie is- and Jamie-" Hiccup's sentence – or whatever the hell that had been – was cut off by Jack grabbing him by the collar and kissing him roughly.
Hiccup's brain short-circuited.
Hiccup's hands slid into Jack's white hair, and he kissed him back.
Hiccup abruptly pulled back, panting, still gripping onto his hair. "What- what the fuck are we doing?"
"No idea. God, I fucking hate you."
Their lips crashed together again.
"We shouldn't be doing this. I have a girlfriend." Jack mumbled against Hiccup's neck but made no effort to move away or stop his trail of kisses.
"This is such a bad idea." Hiccup agreed, arching his neck back to allow better access.
"Why are we doing this?" Jack asked, nipping lightly at Hiccup's collarbone, eliciting a light gasp.
"Hell if I know. You kissed me first."
"And you kissed me back."
"Touche." Hiccup pulled Jack up by the hair into another kiss.
A noise coming from Jamie's room sent the two up to Jack's room, frantic kisses on the way disrupting the process.
As soon as Hiccup was through the bedroom door, Jack was pushing him up against it, hands clinging to his waist and nails digging in over Hiccup's shirt.
"Fuck." Hiccup hissed, jerking, as Jack licked up the side of his neck, nails pressing in further.
"Shhh, Hiccy." Jack murmured, voice sultry and thick and desperate.
Hiccup smirked and pressed his thigh against Jack, delighting in the pained hiss that fell from Jack's lips.
"Fucking asshole." Jack groaned, rubbing himself against Hiccup's thigh all the same.
"You started it." Hiccup retorted, the back of his head banging against the door when one of Jack's hands trailed down and cupped Hiccup through his pants as payback.
"Well, then let me finish it."
Hiccup wouldn't oppose to that.
Post-nut clarity seemed to hit them both like a truck immediately after they'd both redressed themselves.
It must have been well-past 9 by now if Hiccup had to guess – but it was the weekend, he had nowhere to be the next day, so he was no longer in any hurry to leave, not after that.
"Jack, what did we just do?"
"I don't know. That shouldn't have happened." Jack seemed to be having a crisis. Hiccup wasn't doing much better.
"Then why did it? Jack, why did you kiss me?"
"Why did you kiss me back?!" Jack looked frantic, terrified. Hiccup gave him a look. "Fuck! Because I wanted to, but…but why the hell do I want to?"
"Do?"
"Do, did, I don't know!"
Hiccup raised an eyebrow. "Alright, just, calm down for a second and we'll…we'll figure this out."
"Figure what out? That I cheated on my girlfriend twice, with a guy, and that I want it to happen again?" Jack blurted, furiously staring at Hiccup.
"Well, why did you want it to happen in the first place? Why do you want it to continue happening?"
Jack took several minutes to answer, calming himself enough to really think and formulate an answer. "Because…I do. I look at you, and I just…I don't want to keep my hands off you. I don't think I can stay away from you, as much as I really want to."
"So…don't."
"What?"
Hiccup was such a terrible person for this.
"So don't stay away." He repeated, meeting Jack's hard gaze. "It doesn't have to mean anything. You can stay with Elsa, and she doesn't have to know. But…whenever you can't stay away, don't."
Jack didn't hesitate to say, "Ok."
"I still hate you." Hiccup said.
"Good. I still hate you too."
They were both terrible people.
Hiccup found he didn't mind, not as Jack started kissing him again.
