Chapter 5 - Beware who you trust
The Central Control Room of the Commission of Counter Ghoul headquarters buzzed with activity. Screens flashed with live footage from various wards, while investigators moved with purpose, coordinating efforts to maintain order and combat the ghoul threat. Amidst this controlled chaos stood two of the CCG's most formidable investigators: Itachi and Sasuke Uchiha.
Trained by the legendary Kishou Arima himself, the Uchiha brothers were prodigies. Itachi, the elder brother, had quickly risen to the rank of Special Class Investigator, his calm demeanor and unparalleled skill earning him a reputation as one of the CCG's finest. Sasuke, fiercely determined to follow in his brother's footsteps, had achieved the rank of First Class Investigator. Together, they were a force to be reckoned with.
In a private briefing room, Itachi and Sasuke stood before a large digital map of Tokyo, displaying the various wards and their ghoul activity. The map highlighted the 20th Ward in red, indicating a spike in recent incidents.
CCG Director Marude sat behind a sleek, glass desk, reviewing the latest reports. He looked up as the Uchiha brothers entered, his expression serious.
"Itachi, Sasuke," Marude began, his voice authoritative. "We have a situation in the 20th Ward that requires your immediate attention."
Itachi nodded, his dark eyes reflecting a deep, thoughtful intelligence. "What's the nature of the situation, Director?"
Marude tapped a few keys on his tablet, bringing up footage of recent ghoul attacks in the 20th Ward. "We've seen an increase in ghoul activity, and there are reports of a particularly dangerous ghoul operating in the area. We need you to investigate and neutralize the threat."
Sasuke's eyes narrowed, his competitive spirit ignited. "Do we have any information on the ghoul's identity or capabilities?"
Marude shook his head. "Not much. There are rumors of a ghoul known as 'The Shino' resurfacing, but details are scarce. Your mission is to gather intelligence, identify the ghoul, and eliminate any threats."
Itachi glanced at Sasuke, a silent communication passing between them. "Understood. We'll head to the 20th Ward immediately."
Marude nodded, satisfied. "Good. We're counting on you both. Keep in contact and report any findings."
Later that day, Itachi and Sasuke arrived in the 20th Ward, blending seamlessly into the urban landscape. Their presence was discreet, but their sharp eyes missed nothing. The brothers moved with the grace and precision of seasoned hunters, each step calculated and purposeful.
As they patrolled the streets, they gathered information from local contacts and observed the daily routines of the ward's inhabitants. It didn't take long for them to pick up on the fear that permeated the air, a fear rooted in the recent ghoul attacks.
"Itachi," Sasuke said quietly as they walked through a crowded market, "the people here are terrified. This 'Shino' must be causing a lot of trouble."
Itachi nodded, his expression calm but focused. "We need to find out more about The Shino. Let's visit the local CCG outpost and see what information they have."
At the local CCG outpost, Itachi and Sasuke were greeted with respect and deference by the investigators stationed there. The brothers reviewed the recent reports and interrogated witnesses, piecing together the fragmented accounts of Shino's activities.
One investigator, a young woman named Akira, provided valuable insight. "There have been multiple sightings of The Shino near an old warehouse district. It's become a hotspot for ghoul activity, but we haven't been able to gather enough evidence to take action."
Sasuke's eyes lit up with determination. "The warehouse district. That's our lead."
Itachi agreed. "We'll start there. Keep us informed of any new developments."
Under the cover of night, Itachi and Sasuke positioned themselves discreetly near the warehouse district, watching the area with keen eyes. They observed the comings and goings of individuals, noting the suspicious activities and the guarded demeanor of those who entered.
"Itachi," Sasuke whispered, "I have a feeling this place is more than just an old warehouse. The ghouls here are careful, almost like they're hiding something."
Itachi's gaze was steady. "Stay sharp, Sasuke. We need to confirm our suspicions before we make a move."
As they continued their surveillance, Itachi and Sasuke noticed a group of figures entering one of the larger warehouses. The way they moved, their cautious glances, all pointed to something clandestine happening inside.
Deciding it was time to act, Itachi and Sasuke approached the warehouse cautiously. They moved with silent precision, their training evident in every step. As they neared the entrance, they could hear hushed voices and the faint clinking of metal.
Sasuke nodded to Itachi, signaling that he was ready. Itachi responded with a slight nod of his own, and together, they slipped inside.
The interior of the warehouse was dimly lit, the shadows creating a maze of obstacles. The Uchiha brothers navigated the space with practiced ease, their eyes adjusting to the darkness. They could make out the shapes of several individuals gathered around a makeshift table, discussing plans in hushed tones.
One of the figures, a tall man with a commanding presence, spoke up. "We need to be careful. The CCG is getting closer. We can't afford any mistakes."
Itachi and Sasuke exchanged glances, recognizing the gravity of the situation. They continued to observe, gathering as much information as they could without revealing their presence.
Back at their temporary base, Itachi and Sasuke reviewed their findings. The evidence pointed towards the warehouse district being a significant hub of ghoul activity, but they needed more concrete proof.
"It's only a matter of time before we uncover the truth," Sasuke said, his voice tinged with anticipation.
Itachi nodded, his expression thoughtful. "We must be patient and precise. When the time comes, we'll strike and reveal the secrets hidden in the 20th Ward."
As the night deepened, the Uchiha brothers prepared for the challenges ahead.
The mission was clear: investigate, gather intelligence, and eliminate the threat. But as they delved deeper into the shadows of the 20th Ward, they would soon discover that the line between hunter and hunted was more blurred than they had ever imagined.
The night was dark and foreboding as Naruto, masked as The Shino, made his way to Anteiku. The café was closed, its windows dark and the street outside eerily quiet. Despite the stillness, Naruto's determination was unwavering. He was done with hiding, done with secrets. Tonight, he would uncover the truth.
As he approached the café, he could see a lone figure inside a girl with blue hair, diligently cleaning the counters. She was alone, unaware of the storm about to break. Naruto's heart pounded with a mix of rage and purpose as he prepared to confront her.
With a swift, powerful motion, Naruto smashed through the window, the glass shattering with a deafening crash. The blue-haired girl spun around, her eyes wide with shock and fear. Before she could react, Naruto lunged forward, grabbing her by the neck and lifting her off the ground.
"Whoever did this will pay," he growled, his voice distorted by the Shino mask. "A girl died, eaten by a ghoul. Tell me if anyone from your group did it!"
The girl struggled against his grip, her eyes bulging as she tried to breathe. Despite her fear, defiance flickered in her eyes, and she fought back, her ghoul nature surfacing. Her eyes turned a bright crimson, and her kagune a sleek, deadly Rinkaku emerged, ready to strike.
"I won't tell you anything," she spat, her voice strained but filled with attitude. "Do your worst."
"That's not a good idea," Naruto hissed, his voice cold and threatening. From his lower back, nine tails of his own Rinkaku kagune unfurled, glowing with a menacing light.
The girl's eyes widened in recognition and fear. "It's you... the Shino of the 6th Ward."
Before Naruto could respond, the door to the back room opened, and a tall, imposing figure stepped out. It was Yoshimura, the manager of Anteiku. His calm demeanor and piercing gaze immediately commanded attention.
"What is going on here?" Yoshimura asked, his voice steady but laced with authority.
Naruto turned to face him, his mask still firmly in place. "A girl was killed by a ghoul. I'm trying to find out who did it."
Yoshimura's eyes flicked to the shattered window and the frightened girl, then back to Naruto. "We had nothing to do with it. Anteiku does not condone killing humans."
Naruto's eyes narrowed. "You expect me to believe that?"
Yoshimura stepped closer, his gaze unwavering. "Yes, because it's the truth. We have chosen a different path. We help ghouls survive without harming humans."
The girl, Touka, glared at Naruto. "What the hell is he, some kind of freak?" she muttered, her eyes fixed on Naruto's exposed ghoul eye.
Yoshimura raised a hand to calm her. "Touka, leave it."
Naruto's eyes widened at the word "all." He could tell that Yoshimura had discerned his true nature—a half-ghoul, half-human. With a deep breath, Naruto removed his mask, revealing his face.
Touka's eyes widened in recognition. "I remember you. You're the boy who reads books with that other kid."
Naruto nodded, a mix of anger and sorrow in his eyes. "Names Naruto. I'm sorry for the damage. But the human girl who was eaten... she was my girlfriend."
The room fell silent, the weight of his words hanging heavily in the air. Touka's defiant expression softened slightly. "There are only really two ghouls who would do something like that in this ward at the moment. The Gourmet or the Binge Eater."
Naruto's heart clenched as he processed this information. The name 'The Gourmet was unfamiliar but he knew the binge eater was Rize, and if these people knew her then that meant she has been killing and eating in the area.
Yoshimura nodded solemnly. "We will help you, Naruto. Anteiku is a place for all ghouls, and we strive to maintain peace. If these ghouls are responsible, they will be found."
Naruto's gaze shifted between Yoshimura and Touka, his resolve hardening. "Thank you. But I will find them, and they will pay."
As Naruto turned to leave, Yoshimura spoke once more. "Be careful, Naruto. The path you walk is dangerous, and the truth is often more complex than it seems."
Naruto nodded, his mind focused on the mission ahead. The dawn of The Shino had arrived, and with it, a reckoning for those who dared to stand in his way. As he stepped out into the night, the mask concealing his identity once more, he felt a surge of power and purpose. The road ahead was uncertain, but one thing was clear: he would find Hinata's killer and make them pay.
Naruto made his way back home, the events at Anteiku replaying in his mind. The revelation about Hinata's death and the names Touka had given him weighed heavily on his heart. He needed answers, and he needed them soon.
When he arrived at his apartment, he found Rize waiting for him, her expression a mix of curiosity and impatience.
"What happened?" she asked, her eyes narrowing as she sensed the tension in him.
Naruto removed the Shino mask, setting it aside as he took a deep breath. "Anteiku isn't responsible for Hinata's death. They claim to be different, helping ghouls survive without harming humans."
Rize raised an eyebrow, skepticism evident in her gaze. "And you believe them?"
Naruto nodded slowly. "For now, yes. They gave me two names of ghouls who might be responsible: the Gourmet and the Binge Eater."
At the mention of the Binge Eater, Rize's eyes went wide, a flicker of fear and recognition crossing her face. "The Binge Eater? You think it's...?"
Naruto's eyes hardened as he looked directly at her. "I have to ask, Rize. Was it you? Did you kill Hinata?"
Rize shook her head vehemently, her voice steady but laced with an edge of defensiveness. "No, it wasn't me. I swear it, Naruto."
Naruto studied her for a moment, searching for any sign of deception. He found none, only a desperate insistence in her eyes. "Then we need to find the Gourmet. You said you've met him before?"
Rize nodded, her expression shifting to one of calculated thought. "Yes, I've met him. He's known as Tsukiyama. He's... different. He has a taste for the extravagant, and he helped me with meals a few times."
Naruto's eyes narrowed, suspicion and anger bubbling beneath the surface. "He helped you with meals? What do you mean?"
Rize sighed, running a hand through her hair. "Tsukiyama has connections. He finds unique 'ingredients' and shares them with other ghouls. He enjoys the finer things in life, including the hunt."
Naruto's jaw tightened as he processed this information. The idea of ghouls treating humans as delicacies made his blood boil. "Do you think he could be the one who killed Hinata?"
Rize shrugged, her eyes dark with thought. "It's possible. He has a certain... taste. But we won't know for sure until we find him."
Naruto nodded, his resolve hardening. "Then we find him. Where does he usually operate?"
Rize thought for a moment before responding. "He frequents high-end establishments and exclusive gatherings. He likes to blend in with the elite, hiding in plain sight. I can find him, but it won't be easy."
Naruto's eyes blazed with determination. "Then let's get started. The sooner we find him, the sooner we get answers."
As they prepared to set out, Naruto couldn't shake the feeling that he was walking a dangerous line. Trusting Rize was becoming increasingly difficult, but for now, she was his only lead. The hunt for Tsukiyama, the Gourmet, had begun, and Naruto was prepared to do whatever it took to bring Hinata's killer to justice.
The road ahead was fraught with uncertainty and peril, but Naruto's resolve was unbreakable. With each step, he moved closer to uncovering the truth, and with each revelation, he grew more determined to see justice served. The dawn of Shino had arrived, and with it, a reckoning for those who dared to stand in his way.
Naruto and Rize spent the next few days preparing for their hunt. Rize used her connections and knowledge of the ghoul underground to track down Tsukiyama's usual haunts. They learned that he was known to frequent a series of exclusive, high-end restaurants and secret gatherings where ghouls could indulge their tastes without fear of the CCG.
One evening, as they finalized their plans, Naruto looked at Rize, his eyes filled with determination. "We need to approach this carefully. If Tsukiyama is the one responsible, we can't let him slip away."
Rize nodded, her expression serious. "Agreed. We need to catch him off guard. He's clever and cautious, but he has a weakness for extravagant meals and social events."
Their first lead took them to a luxurious restaurant in the heart of the city. Rize had managed to secure invitations under the guise of wealthy patrons. The atmosphere inside was opulent, with soft lighting and elegant décor. The scent of fine food and expensive wine filled the air.
Naruto and Rize entered the restaurant, blending seamlessly with the other guests. As they moved through the crowd, Naruto kept his senses sharp, searching for any sign of Tsukiyama. Rize whispered to him, pointing subtly towards a private dining area.
"He's usually in there, entertaining his guests. We need to find a way to get closer."
Naruto nodded, scanning the room for an opportunity. He noticed a waiter carrying a tray of drinks towards the private area and quickly formulated a plan. "I'll follow the waiter. You create a distraction if necessary."
Rize smirked. "Leave it to me."
Naruto slipped behind the waiter, moving with the stealth and precision of a seasoned hunter. As the waiter entered the private dining area, Naruto slipped in behind him, staying in the shadows. He could hear the murmur of conversation and laughter, and then a familiar voice—Tsukiyama.
"Ah, the joys of a well-prepared meal," Tsukiyama's voice carried a tone of delight and sophistication. "There's nothing quite like it."
Naruto's eyes narrowed as he moved closer, his heart pounding in his chest. He could see Tsukiyama at the head of the table, surrounded by other ghouls, all dressed in elegant attire. The sight made his blood boil, but he forced himself to stay calm.
As he edged closer, Rize created a commotion outside the private area, drawing the attention of the guests. Tsukiyama looked up, his eyes narrowing with curiosity.
"What is going on out there?" he asked, annoyance creeping into his voice.
Naruto seized the moment, stepping into the light. "Tsukiyama," he called out, his voice steady but filled with underlying rage.
Tsukiyama's eyes widened in surprise, then gleamed with recognition and amusement. "Well, well, if it isn't Shino. To what do I owe this unexpected pleasure?"
Naruto took a step forward, his gaze unwavering. "A girl was killed recently. Eaten by a ghoul. I want to know if it was you."
Tsukiyama chuckled, his demeanor unruffled. "Ah, possibly the Binge Eater, I presume? I must say, it's a messy business. But I assure you, it's not my style."
Naruto's eyes narrowed. "Why should I believe you?"
Tsukiyama leaned back in his chair, a confident smirk on his face. "Because, dear Shino, I prefer my meals to be... unique. Killing an ordinary human lacks the refinement I crave."
Naruto's fists clenched at his sides, but he forced himself to remain composed. "It can't be her since I know her personally."
Tsukiyama's smile faded slightly, replaced by a look of contemplation. "But if you know her personally, you should already know she did do this."
Naruto's mind raced, trying to process this new information. "No, Rize didn't do it."
Tsukiyama shrugged, his expression indifferent. "The Binge Eater is a chaotic force, but if she's not your culprit. And you want answers, you might start by looking at who stands to gain from this chaos."
Naruto took a deep breath, his mind racing with possibilities. "Thank you, Tsukiyama. But know this, if I find out you had anything to do with Hinata's death, I'll make you pay."
Tsukiyama's smile returned, a cold and calculating look in his eyes. "I look forward to the challenge, Shino. Until then, happy hunting."
As Naruto and Rize left the restaurant, the weight of the new information settled over them. Rize glanced at Naruto, her expression a mix of relief and concern. "So, it wasn't him. And it wasn't me."
Naruto nodded, his resolve hardening. "No, but we're back to square one. We need to find out who really killed Hinata."
Rize's eyes darkened with determination. "We'll keep looking. There has to be a clue we missed."
Naruto took a deep breath, the image of Hinata's smiling face flashing in his mind. "Let's do it. The sooner we find her killer, the sooner we get justice for Hinata."
As they set off into the night, Naruto's heart burned with a renewed sense of purpose. The path ahead was fraught with danger, but he was ready. With Rize by his side, he would find the killer and bring them to justice.
The hunt had begun, and The Shino was ready to unleash his fury on those who dared to cross him.
Naruto lay in bed, the weight of the recent revelations pressing heavily on his mind. The search for Hinata's killer had taken another twist, and though he felt closer to the truth, he also felt more lost than ever. Sleep came fitfully, his dreams haunted by visions of Hinata and the faces of those he had encountered in his quest for justice.
In the quiet of the night, the door to his room creaked open. Naruto stirred but did not wake fully. He sensed someone approaching, the faint sound of footsteps soft on the wooden floor.
"Naruto," a familiar voice whispered.
Naruto opened his eyes to see Rize standing at the foot of his bed, her expression unreadable in the dim light. "Rize? What is it?"
She hesitated, her eyes flickering with a mix of emotions. "Can I... sleep here with you? Like we used to when we were younger?"
Naruto's heart tightened with a mix of nostalgia and caution. They had shared a bond in their youth, a time before the darkness had fully consumed their lives. He knew how vulnerable she felt in moments like this, and despite everything, he couldn't completely harden his heart against her.
"Yeah, you can," he said softly, moving over to make space for her.
Rize climbed into the bed beside him, her presence both comforting and unsettling. She lay close, her body warmth a stark contrast to the cold night air. Naruto could feel the tension in her frame, the unspoken fears and doubts that mirrored his own.
For a moment, they lay in silence, the only sound the rhythmic breathing of the night. Then, Rize spoke, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Do you think we'll find them, Naruto? The ones responsible for Hinata's death?"
Naruto sighed, his mind a whirl of thoughts. "I don't know, Rize. But we have to keep trying. For Hinata. For everyone who's been hurt."
Rize nodded, her head resting lightly on his shoulder. "I'm sorry for everything. For making things harder."
Naruto turned his head to look at her, his eyes softening. "We've both made mistakes, Rize. But we can't let the past control us. We have to move forward."
She closed her eyes, a small, sad smile playing on her lips. "Thank you, Naruto."
As they drifted into an uneasy sleep, the shadows of their past and the uncertainties of their future loomed over them. But in that moment, they found a small measure of peace, a brief respite from the turmoil that defined their lives.
The first light of dawn filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow over the room. Naruto woke to find Rize still asleep beside him, her features relaxed in slumber. He carefully extricated himself from the bed, not wanting to wake her.
He had work at the bookstore, a small anchor of normalcy in his otherwise chaotic life. Dressing quietly, he glanced back at Rize, her presence a reminder of both his past and the complexities of his present.
As he left the apartment, the crisp morning air filled his lungs, clearing his mind. The day ahead was filled with mundane tasks, but they were a welcome distraction from the relentless pursuit of justice.
At the bookstore, Naruto immersed himself in his work, as he was arranging a new display near the front of the store, his manager approached him with a look of excitement. "Naruto, I have some great news. Sen Takatsuki, the famous author, is coming here for a book signing today."
Naruto's eyes widened in surprise. Sen Takatsuki was a well-known author, her books renowned for their dark, captivating stories. "That's amazing! I'll get everything ready."
As the day progressed, the bookstore buzzed with anticipation. Fans of Sen Takatsuki began to gather, eager to meet the author and get their books signed. Naruto worked diligently, setting up a table near the entrance and organizing the display of her latest novel.
When Sen Takatsuki finally arrived, Naruto was struck by her presence. She was composed and elegant, with an air of quiet confidence. Her eyes sparkled with intelligence and curiosity as she surveyed the crowd. Naruto felt a flicker of nervousness as he approached her.
"Welcome, Ms. Takatsuki," Naruto greeted, offering a polite smile. "It's an honor to have you here."
Takatsuki turned to him, her gaze warm and appreciative. "Thank you, it's a pleasure to be here. You've done a wonderful job setting everything up."
Naruto felt a surge of pride at her compliment. "Thank you. If you need anything, just let me know. My names Naruto."
The book signing event went smoothly, with fans lining up to meet Sen Takatsuki and have their books signed. Naruto watched as she interacted with each person, her demeanor kind and engaging. As the crowd began to thin, Takatsuki took a moment to stretch and glanced around the store.
Naruto approached her with a cup of coffee. "Here, I thought you might like something warm."
Takatsuki accepted the tea with a grateful smile. "Thank you, Naruto. It's been a busy day."
Naruto nodded, feeling a bit more at ease. "I can imagine. Your books have quite a following."
Takatsuki chuckled softly. "Yes, it's always humbling to see how much people enjoy my stories. Do you enjoy reading?"
Naruto's eyes lit up. "Absolutely. I love books. They've been a huge part of my life."
Takatsuki 's gaze softened with genuine interest. "What kind of books do you like?"
Naruto hesitated for a moment, then replied, "I enjoy a mix of genres, but I have a soft spot for classic literature. There's something timeless about those stories."
Takatsuki nodded thoughtfully. "I agree. Classic literature has a way of capturing the essence of the human experience. It's one of the reasons I became a writer."
Their conversation flowed easily, and Naruto found himself opening up to Takatsuki in a way he hadn't with anyone else in a long time. As the event drew to a close, Takatsuki looked at Naruto with a thoughtful expression.
"Naruto, would you be interested in discussing literature further? Perhaps over coffee sometime?" Takatsuki asked, her tone casual but hopeful.
Naruto felt a warmth spread through him at the invitation. "I'd love that, Takatsuki. It would be an honor."
However, their schedules clashed more often than not. Sen Takatsuki was a celebrity, constantly traveling for book signings, interviews, and writing deadlines. They exchanged phone numbers and kept in touch through calls and text messages, finding solace in their shared love of literature despite the physical distance.
One afternoon, after a particularly engaging lecture, Naruto lingered behind to discuss a topic with his professor. As the last few students trickled out, he gathered his notes and headed towards the library.
As Naruto walked through the bustling hallways, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. Rize was acting diffrent, like she was hidng something as her behaviour had become increasingly weirder.
Naruto asked Rize if she wanted to go for a walk and maybe get some coffee.
"Sure, Naruto," Rize said, a faint smile playing on her lips. "I'd like that."
They walked through the bustling streets of the 20th Ward, the cool autumn air refreshing against their skin. As they wandered, they came across Anteiku.
"Let's find a seat," Naruto said, guiding Rize towards a corner table. Just as they were about to sit down, a familiar voice called out to him.
"Naruto! Over here!" It was Kaneki and Hide, his classmates and friends.
Naruto saw this as an opportunity to diffuse the tension. He smiled and waved back. "Hey, Kaneki! Hide! Mind if we join you?"
Kaneki and Hide nodded enthusiastically. "Of course, come on over," Hide said with his usual cheerfulness.
As Naruto and Rize approached, he introduced her to his friends. "This is Rize. Rize, these are my friends, Kaneki and Hide."
Kaneki blushed slightly as he met Rize's gaze. "N-nice to meet you, Rize."
Rize smiled, a predatory glint in her eyes as she sensed Kaneki's nervousness. She subtly inhaled his scent, recognizing that he would be perfect for her. "Nice to meet you too, Kaneki, Hide."
They all sat down together, and a girl with blue hair approached their table to take their orders. "Hello, my name is Touka. What can I get for you today?"
Naruto glanced at the menu briefly before ordering. "I'll have a sandwich and a coffee, please."
Rize followed suit. "I'll have the same."
Kaneki and Hide ordered coffee, and Touka jotted down their orders with a quick nod before heading back to the counter.
As they waited, Hide struck up a conversation. "So, how do you all know each other?"
Naruto smiled, trying to keep the atmosphere light. "Rize and I have known each other for a long time. We've been through a lot together."
Kaneki nodded, still blushing slightly whenever he glanced at Rize. "It's nice to see you two getting along so well."
Rize's smile widened as she caught Kaneki's gaze again. "Yes, it's good to have friends who understand you."
Naruto couldn't help but feel a mixture of unease and hope. He wanted Rize to find a way to coexist peacefully, to see that there was more to life than just survival and feeding. Maybe this was the first step.
When their orders arrived, they all dug in. Naruto noticed that Touka seemed particularly attentive, her eyes flickering with recognition and suspicion whenever she looked at Rize. It was clear that the Anteiku staff were aware of who they were dealing with.
As they ate, Hide regaled them with a funny story from class, and Naruto laughed, feeling a rare moment of normalcy. Even Kaneki seemed to relax, though he still stole shy glances at Rize.
After they finished their meal, Naruto felt a sense of cautious optimism. Maybe, just maybe, this could be the start of something better. He turned to Rize, hoping she felt the same.
"Thanks for coming out with me, Rize," he said softly. "I really enjoyed this."
Rize looked at him, her smile genuine for once. "Me too, Naruto."
As they stood to leave, Kaneki and Hide bid them goodbye. "Let's do this again sometime," Hide suggested, grinning widely.
"Definitely," Naruto agreed. "Take care, guys."
As they exited Anteiku, Naruto couldn't shake the feeling that they had crossed a significant threshold. The warmth of the coffee shop, the laughter with friends, and the sense of belonging were things he had longed for. He hoped Rize could see it too.
"Rize," Naruto said, breaking the comfortable silence as they walked home. "What did you think of Kaneki and Hide?"
Rize's eyes gleamed with a mix of amusement and something darker. "They seem nice. Especially Kaneki. He seems... interesting."
Naruto felt a pang of unease but pushed it aside. "I'm glad you got along with them. Maybe we can all hang out more often."
Rize nodded, her smile enigmatic. "Yes, I'd like that."
As they walked back to their apartment, Naruto felt like Rize was becoming a better person. Yet, every time he closed his eyes, he couldn't help but see Hinata's smile.

That's the end of this chapter. I wanted to hint that some Naruto characters will make appearances, but not too many just enough to keep things interesting.
The next chapter is a big one.
