After awhile they stopped to eat some lunch in the town square and when they finished, they noticed a group of musicians setting up their instruments to play a song. Then they overheard the performers discussing something.
"What do you mean Lorenzo isn't coming tonight?" The guitarist said. "He's our drummer. We need a beat."
"Yeah but he got into some posion oak. Won't be able to move for a week at least." The keyboardist answered.
"Ah man, our first gig in months and he's not here. That's it! We're done! It's back to selling pottery at my dad's shop!"
For them this was bad luck, for Angel it was the opportunity of a lifetime. A chance to finally perform in a real crowd.
"Excuse me gentlemen." Angel said stepping forward. "I don't mean to evesdrop but I heard you guys say that you need a drummer."
"Yeah, do you play?" The guitarist asked.
Angel answered by sitting down at the drum set and performing a quick drum solo with all four of his arms. The percussion was perfectly on tact and he didn't miss one beat. The musicians and Angel's friends were left speechless.
"Okay you're Lorenzo's replacement for tonight." Said one musician who played the trumpet.
It took all of Angel's willpower not to scream like a teenage girl living out her fantasy. Hecouldn't believe it, he was actually going to perform. And did he perform. He had no trouble keeping up with the band's music and the crowds were just gathering all around to listen and cheer and dance. Alastor smiled at the utter glee in Angel's eyes. Though he knew Angel to be a very chipper creature most of the time, but he could tell that this was one of the happiest moments of his life. He wouldn't admit it but he was glad that Angel was getting the chance to live out his dream. Even if it was just for one day.
"He's really good." Charlie commented. "He might actually have a shot at being a drummer."
"He doesn't just drum." Vaggie said. "He told me the other night that he can play instruments, sing, and dance."
"Speaking of dance." Charlie said almost giving Alastor an almost flirty smile. "I'm a little disappointed Al."
"Disappointed?" He inquired.
She glanced over at the ladies and gentlemen partnering up.
"I was hoping that you would ask me to dance." She said.
"Oh. Is that right?" Alastor replied with an almost flirty smile of his own. "Well why didn't you say so?"
He stood up from his chair and bowed before the princess.
"May I have this dance?"
Her smile grew as she gave him a curtsey.
"I'd love to."
He took her by the hand and led her over to the center of the square. Soon they were moving side by side, her in his arms as they danced together harmoniously with an equal amount of grace and agility. Their steps matched, they felt the same rhythm, and their movement was in perfect sync with each other. It wasn't long before they became lost in the music and in each other's eyes. If only they knew how happy they were making the other person feel in this moment and how much they hoped this feeling would last the rest of their lives.
They forgot that he was a wendigo and that she was a human. They forgot that it would be strange for someone like him and someone like her to dance togther this way. To those who would only try to see things through what soicety believed, Alastor and Charlie shouldn't have even been making eye contanct. But to those like Angel and Vaggie, who would only try to see things through the truth, it was obvious that Alastor and Charlie were meant to be.
"You're a wonderful dancer." Charlie said as he spun her. "But I figured you would be."
"Really?" He chuckled. "Most people wouldn't think that I was much of a dancer. In fact they usually assume that my only talent is anything involving bloodshed."
"There's a lot more to you than most people think. That I've learned over these past few days."
"I could say the same for you my dear. When we first met I thought I had you all figured out but now...Now you're a mystery that I have yet to crack."
"Mystery? Me? I'm just your average, ordianry, fairy tale princess."
"No. No you're something else. Something much more speical. I can't put my finger on it but you are different, and I like that."
"Are you so sure? A lot of people don't really like what makes me so different. They much prefer that I be like eveyone else."
"Well I wouldn't like it. I would hate it if you were to start acting like everyone else. Because then that's who you'd be. You'd be everybody else instead of you. The real you."
"But what if nobody likes the real me?"
"I like the real you."
"You don't know the real me. At least not all of the real me."
"Then why don't you show me? I know it's crazy but I...I really want to know you. All of you. Every detail, every aspect."
"I can't. I'm...I'm scared."
"Scared of what?"
"Scared that you won't like every detail and every aspect. Scared that once you really know me, you won't like me anymore."
"That could never happen."
"You don't understand, I'm not normal."
"Neither am I. Who is normal anyway?" He joked.
"I'm serious. I don't like who I am."
"Why?" He looked at her confused. "You're courageous, you're smart, you're kind, you're talented, you're funny. You're a remarkable woman. What's not to like?"
She wanted to tell him. God she wanted to tell him so badly. She wanted to tell him that it wasn't just her personality and interests that made her different. That it was something which was much harder to be accepted by others. But fear held her back. She just couldn't face rejection. Not now. Not today. Not when today had been so wonderful. Telling him now would just ruin everything.
"I don't want to talk about it anymore. Can we change the subject please?" She asked him.
"As you wish." He said. "Here let me show you this one dance step my mother taught me."
He lifted her up and they glided over the square. The tensity and anxiety forgotten, and the joy and laughter returning.
"Oh come on Smiles, make a move already." Angel complained as he watched them dance. "The stage is all set up for ya man. Music, dancing, a beautiful girl, a sunset."
"Sunset?!" Vaggie gasped.
She glanced over to the horizon and saw that the sun was just beginning to go down.
"Oh shit!"
She ran through the dancing crowd and grabbed Charlie by the arm.
"Hate to interrupt but I think we need to get going." She said.
"Now?" Charlie asked.
"Yes! Now!" Vaggie pointed over to the setting sun.
"Oh no!"
"What?" Alastor asked.
"Nothing! I mean I need to go!"
"Go? Go where?"
But she didn't answer. She and Vaggie just ran out of there as fast as they could. Alastor tired to chase after them but the crowd blocked his way. By the time he finally made it threw and caught up with Vaggie, Charlie was nowhere to be seen.
"Where did she go?" He asked her.
"She's resting." Vaggie answered. "She's not feeling too well. Ate too much candy from that shop and that mixed with the dancing gave her an upset stomach. She's set up a room for us at one of the inns around here."
"Is she alright?"
"She's fine. She just needs to rest. She'll be fine in the morning."
"I'm going to go check on her."
"No. You can't do that, she's asleep."
"That quick?"
"It's been a long day. She's very tired."
Alastor looked at Vaggie suspiciously. Something wasn't adding up. If Charlie was just having a little tummy trouble then why did she practically bolt out of the crowd like it was a life or death emergency. It had something to do with the sunset, he was sure of that. Why did Charlie always get so uset when the sun went down? What was she hiding?
"Vaggie I've noticed that Charlie becomes very uncomfortable around the time the sun goes down. Why?"
"I don't know what you mean."
"Do not insult my intelligence by lying. She runs away and hides at each sunset. Why is that?"
"It's none of your business so I don't have to tell you. She doesn't like to stay out after dark and that's all I'm telling you. If you must know, talk to her about it tomorrow."
"Why don't you just tell me?"
"I don't tell other people's secrets and if you're a real gentlemen and her friend then you'll understand that."
Blast! Vaggie had a point there.
"Alright. I'll leave it be until tomorrow. Just let me go get Angel and you can escort us to the inn."
And off he went with his mind full of curiosity.
