The first thing Bobby Santiago heard when he woke up at six in the morning was the loud beeping from his alarm clock. Groggily reaching over, he fumbled a bit on his nightstand until he finally turned it off.
Stretching his arms out with a low yawn, Bobby slowly sits himself up and gets himself out of bed for he couldn't afford to dolly around as today was his shift at Lally's Lollies; a small candy store in town, he started working at since last month. Bobby may have early morning shifts, but that's ok, he liked working there for the employees get to have the extra made candy that didn't get sold for free, a very sweet bonus he says. Plus besides; he needed to work due to the current affairs he and his family are in.
It still saddens him that his parents are no longer together and that his dad is now working in Peru. Ever since he was a little kid, he always thought that his mom and dad would be together forever, but lately his dad kept working overseas and gotten himself into a few disagreements with his mom, it was then they both decided that it would probably be best to separate themselves. It was such a big blow to both him and his sister, the only good thing that came out of it is that at least it wasn't a nasty divorce with them fighting or screaming at each other, and that they are still on very good terms with each other.
None of the less; with the aspect of now living in a single parent household. They now have to restraint themselves on their budgets, right along with his mother taking up some more shifts at the hospital. It's saddening that both he and his sister don't see her very often, but Bobby fully understood that she is doing it to keep them afloat, which is why he took more than one job, to help out his family.
But personally between all of his jobs throughout town, Lally's was his absolute favorite; mainly because of the free candy. Speaking of his job however, he should really get himself going as he doesn't wanna be late for you know what they say, a late person is a unhappy person. At least; that's his motto, but he's sure it's what other people would think.
Anywho; the very first thing that he did is pick up his Lally's uniform that he hung up last night on the closet hook, then headed for the bathroom to do his hygiene routine; a routine that he usually starts out with a nice, relaxing shower with just the perfect water temperature, not too cold where you feel like you're walking around naked in the middle of Antarctica and not too hot where it feels like your on fire.
After his just right shower, Bobby then puts on some deodorant, a cup of mouth wash, brushes his teeth, some shaving of his facial hair, put his uniform on, then finally combed his hair in exactly that order at a rather impressive speed. It's one of the main benefits of not only having so many jobs, but also attending high school on top of that. You gained a certain system that helps you do your hygiene in good time.
It's thanks to this system that he completely nailed down, it fully allows Bobby to have enough time to eat breakfast with his family. Even though to be completely honest; it was most likely just going to be him and his mom for since its the first day of Summer vacation, Ronnie Anne was going to be sleeping-in till eleven. He can't blame her as he along with their mother happily do it as well, when they both have the day off from their jobs.
But with breakfast now in mind, Bobby comes out of the bathroom with a rumbling tummy and heads into the kitchen, where his mother with one last piece of toast on her plate and a cup of coffee in hand is busy reading a news article on her phone. Noticing her son; she gave out a warm smile. "Morning Bobby. Breakfast is right on the counter."
"Thanks mom." Heading up to the counter, Bobby finds a classic breakfast of bacon and eggs with buttered toast on the side. Picking up the plate, he takes a glance out to the early summer morning where the sun is still rising from the horizon, creating a beautiful glow throughout the neighborhood. He can also see a couple of people out and about, while animals such as birds and squirrels ran or flew around in yards.
"What a beautiful morning." He happily exclaimed as he took his plate over to the table and sat down across from his mother.
"It sure is hijo. I read that today is going to be in the 70's. Too bad; I can't enjoy this fine day." She slightly sighed.
"Maybe you'll be assigned outside shifts today." Bobby reassured, causing his mother to chuckle a bit. "That would be nice."
A new series of footsteps entering the kitchen then gets their attention. To their utter surprise, Ronnie Anne; in her regular day outfit, came walking in with one hand raised. "Morning guys."
"What's this? My daughter getting up early on the first day of Summer vacation. Have I entered into the Twilight Zone?" Their mother joked.
Bobby however is a bit concern for this is so very unlike her. "Are you feeling alright Ronnie Anne?"
"I'm fine Bobby. It's just that a new ramp at the skate park is opening up today and I wanna get there before it gets too crowded." Picking up some bagels, Ronnie Anne places two of them in the toaster.
"Oh okay. Just be careful when you're doing those tricks honey." Her daughter may be a good skater, but Maria has seen plenty of kids and teens suffering from skateboarding accidents to give her a bit of caution for her daughter's safety when ever she goes out riding.
"Don't worry mom. I'm a professional." Ronnie Anne nonchalantly replied. The bagels then popped out of the toaster and without even looking at them, Ronnie Anne catches them from mid air before then rushing out of the kitchen to collect her skateboarding gear. A few seconds later, the sound of the front door opening and closing echoed throughout the house.
Shortly after she left, Maria checks the time on her phone and quickly finished up her toast and coffee. "Oh. I need to get going." Getting up from her seat with her purse wrapped around her arm, she went up to her son and gave him a gentle hug. "Have a good day at work hijo."
"You to mom."
"I also don't mean to be pushy, but if you could bring home one of those cake pops that would be really nice."
"Sure thing mom." He liked those cake pops to.
"Thank you. See you tonight Bobby." Leaving the kitchen, the house is once again echoed with the door opening and closing, leaving Bobby alone to finish up his breakfast, which was a bit saddening for not too long ago, mainly last year. The family would've all been at the table chatting with one another on today's plans. Even when his mother left for a early morning shift, both his sister and father would still be here.
But those days are gone. The only amount of people to chat with now is usually either two or three. He and Ronnie Anne would be here in the mornings, while dinner is usually reserved for all of them, but that wasn't the case all the time for when their mother had to work late, it was just him and Ronnie Anne. They still talked about things, but it just didn't feel complete without dad here.
But enough of this thinking of the past, he should really get himself into gear.
Eating the last of his breakfast, Bobby puts his plate in the sink, wiped his face, and then grabbed his fully charged phone from the kitchen counter with his trusty headphones attached to them. Going through his music, he picks his favorite song and finally heads out of the house for work.
Since his mother took the car, Bobby had to settle on taking his bike to get to work. He didn't mind since the fresh breeze felt rather nice against his feet and his legs really appreciate this exercise.
Reaching Lally's at last, Bobby parks and firmly locked his bike against a light post. After a careful inspection to make sure his bike was firmly secured, Bobby heads into work where his co-worker Tad is already standing behind the register with a small, paperback book in hand.
"Morning Tad." Bobby happily greeted.
Looking up from his book, Tad gives out a wave. "Morning Bobby. You look rather chipper today."
"I just love this job, and plus this week is going to officially mark mine and my girlfriend's third week anniversary."
"Nice man. You two are really in love aren't you."
"We sure are." Gazing up to the ceiling with a complete lovestruck face, Bobby can just see his girlfriend's beautiful face reflecting off a heavenly light as her blond hair flows perfectly in the wind. They were absolutely perfect for each other, he just knew it after the first time he saw her playing mini-golf. He's just glad that he managed to work up the courage to ask her out after weeks of becoming a nervous wreck whenever he's in her presence.
She was Lori Loud; eldest child of the Loud family. A large family that used to be really infamous for how literal their last names can be. That was right until a unspoken tragedy two years ago, turned them into broken shells of their former selves.
Bobby didn't know much about the tragedy since his family moved here a couple months after it took place. All he really knew was that it involved five of Lori's siblings going missing without a trace, which he can very well sympathize for. He couldn't imagine on what he would do if Ronnie Anne suddenly went missing. It would absolutely shatter his world into a trillion pieces.
Overall though he felt very terrible for what happened to the family. For if loosing five of your beloved family members wasn't enough, rumors also began to spread with talks of a sixth one going missing weeks before the others got taken. There are some who even say that it was someone who had a personal vendetta against the family since both of the incidents are said to have happened in both of the Loud's father's restaurants, forcing him to quit on his dream of being a chef of his own restaurant.
He hated these rumors as it clearly wasn't helping the broken family, who only hung out with the few friends they had, if they weren't with each other or now live in a household that may as well be abandoned with how unsettling silent it is.
He hopes that he can help Lori find true happiness again for if anyone needed happiness in their lives, it's her.
"So what are you doing for your anniversary?" Tad then asked, catching Bobby off guard a bit due to all of his thinking.
"Huh? Oh right. We're supposed to be having dinner at her house on Thursday." Now here's a thing Bobby has to admit. He was a bit nervous for this is going to be the first time he was going to meet Lori's parents. He heard that they were nice, but he really hoped that he was good enough to meet their approval as he dates their daughter.
"You nervous?" Tad question.
"Yes."
"I wouldn't worry Bobby. After all; you're a very nice guy."
"Aw thanks Tad." Looking down to the book he was reading, Bobby got a bit curious for he noticed the word dreams on the title. "By the way. What are you reading?"
Flipping the book over, Tad merely gives out a shrug. "Eh. It's just a book on dream theory."
Dream theory? He never heard of that one before. "What's that about?"
"Basically" Tad shrugged. "It's about how long lost memories trapped inside your brain. Can be shown through dreams if you concentrate hard enough."
"What made you interested in that?"
"Nothing special. I just recently began thinking about this computer game I used to play as a kid. I only get images of a yellow monster called The Grump and a puzzle with a gorilla in the kitchen. It's been driving me crazy for days as I know the name of it is somewhere in my noggin, but I just can't remember it."
"How's it going so far?" Bobby wondered for the game sounded interesting.
"So far; I've been getting more images of the game, but that name is still far from my grasp."
"Cool man. You mind if I take a look at it when your done reading it? I wouldn't mind to tab into some long lost memories."
"Sure man. But please be careful, it's a library book." Tad already has a hefty fine for forgetting to return a previous library book last week, he didn't need to add to the fine by returning a damage book.
"Don't worry man. I'll treat it with the most respect."
It was all that Tad needed to hear. "Okay. I'll hand it to you during our lunch break."
"Thanks Tad."
Checking his watch, it was almost time to open up shop. To make some preparations for before opening up, Bobby picked up a broom to sweep up a bit, while Tad prepared the front desk candies. When they were done, Bobby flipped the sign over to open and got behind the counter with a happy smile for the customers that will soon be coming in.
Hours slowly passed and throughout the day; the shop only got a total of ten customers. It's a bit concerning for as of lately they've been having slow days and it's very concerning because with these slow days, they weren't making much profit. The only good thing about these slow days is that they gave Bobby plenty of time to keep the shop very nice and clean, right up to the point you can see your reflection on the floor.
Currently after giving out a lemon loaf to Mr. Grouse, Bobby got to work on wiping up the tables. He just finished one, when the owner of Lally's: Lally Miller, stepped out of her office with a very troubled look as she held a clipboard in her hand.
"Hey guys. I'm sorry to interrupt your work, but I have some very troubling news."
"What's wrong Mrs. Miller?" Bobby asked in concern.
"Due to a recently opened candy shop taking all of our customers. I'm sorry to say this, but unfortunately I'm going have to close up shop forever."
"Oh no! That's horrible Mrs. Miller!" Bobby cried out.
"It is Bobby. It has always been my dream to own my very own candy shop and now it's all but shattered. It's even worse for me because now I'm going have to let my two best employees go. I am so sorry it has to end up like this boys."
"That's alright Mrs. Miller." Bobby reassured.
"Yeah. Life is just tough and it just gave us a huge kick in the shins." Tad added in equal reassurance.
"You two are so kind. To show both of you no hard feelings, you can have a free bag of candy." Reaching into her front pocket, she slowly takes out two envelopes. "Here are your last pay checks. I hope you two will have a good rest of the day."
Releasing a sad sigh, Mrs Miller slowly retreated back into her office. Leaving both Tad and Bobby to collect their paychecks and their bags of candy with very dejected looks for how can they loose one of the best jobs in town.
"Well this is a major bummer man. I took this job to save up money for that sweet guitar I saw at the mall."
"I know what you mean. I was helping support my family with this job." It's such a bummer, Bobby took out a piece of chocolate and ate it with a slow chew.
"Wait, but don't you have other jobs?" Tad pointed out after recalling seeing Bobby working at the supermarket and as a lifeguard at the pool.
"Yes, but I need to help out as much as I can." Bobby replied.
"You also don't want to overwork yourself, man." Tad warned for he didn't want him to end up acting like a zombie.
"Don't worry man. I can handle it."
"As long as your sure." Taking his bag, Tad leaves the store to enjoy it as well as to clear his head on what to do next.
Being completely alone now, Bobby wondered on what he should do? He obviously needs to find another job, but where? He hasn't seen any recent job openings for the past few days. The only thing for him to really do is head on home and hope to find a job online.
But as he headed for home, Bobby wondered on how he should tell his family of the recent loss of his job. He knows it wasn't his fault, but he didn't want them to worry, not when they already have enough to worry about on their plate.
He'll have to explain it to them gently.
