Renamon stood on the edge of the roof of Grandpa Rob's cabin, staring up at the beautiful starry sky, each star glimmering proudly. Such a pretty sight, she had never seen night skies like this in any other human city she had been to.
To her, this was a testament to how wonderful Halcyon was. It was a beautiful city and showed the best of what humanity and Digimon had to offer.
While she was more than proud to defend it, she felt rather unworthy to be around the people who populated the city. Renamon sighed and sat down on the edge, her big thighs spreading out as she sat and her tail drooping over the edge.
Meanwhile, Wulf was in his bedroom doing some reading in his bed. In his hands was a history book titled ". The Digital War 1999-2000". The book detailed an extensive history of the brief yet very impactful Digital War, where humanity first made contact with Digimon. He reads a certain paragraph about the latter stages of the war.
"By late July, many nations had fallen, and the situation looked very grim. However, everything changed that month when a special envoy of Digimon managed to reach Earth and made contact with the remaining world governments. Unlike the Digimon attacking Earth, these Digimon didn't support the Triumvirate Empire and expressed a desire to help defend Earth and stop the empire. An alliance was made, and the war would hit a turning point." Wulf then gazed his eyes downwards and began reading the next paragraph.
"On August 1, American and Japanese forces paired with Digimon would launch an operation to liberate the city of Tokyo. Their forces landed at Odaiba and quickly engaged Triumvirate forces in what would become known as the Battle of Odaiba. With the help of the Digimon, the Battle of Odaiba would become the first engagement won against the Triumvirate Empire. After the war ended, the 1st of August would become known as Odaiba Day, celebrating the cooperation between Digimon and humanity." Wulf smiled and closed the book, setting it next to his nightstand.
Suddenly, shortly after he did this, Renamon would open his bedroom window and enter it from outside. Wulf got up and sat on the edge of his bed, looking at Renamon.
"Renamon?" He curiously asked.
"Hello, Wulf. My apologies, I was just up on the roof." She told him, closing his bedroom window.
"Yeah, I understand. You value your alone time you said." Saying this only made Wulf wonder about something. "Renamon? If you don't mind me asking, why do you like being alone so often?".
Renamon would be caught off-guard by this question, not too sure how to respond. "Well, it's hard to explain. I guess I'm just a natural loner.".
"I understand, but you are my Digimon partner now, and I've rarely seen you this week." He said while standing from his bed.
"I'm sorry, I'll try to be there for you more," Renamon reassured him.
"I feel bad saying that I don't want to force you to be by my side all the time or anything, I guess I'm just a bit worried, that's all." Wulf then remembered something else about Renamon that made him curious.
"Also, Renamon, I must ask, why were you so shy around other people when I was getting you registered in the D.R.S.? I understand you like being alone, but surely you know you can trust people in this city.". He explained to her.
Renamon suddenly looked rather guilty and tried to say something but couldn't finish it. Then, she sighed and gave Wulf a more sincere look.
"Wulf, I need to tell you something." She spoke.
He raised an eyebrow. "What's that, Renamon?".
Renamon would approach Wulf, then walk behind him and sit on his bed, prompting him to sit down next to her. Renamon took a deep breath and prepared herself.
"I feel guilty to be around humans like I do not deserve to be around them at all." She told him.
Wulf was undoubtedly confused. "Huh? Why do you feel that?".
"It's because I used to not like humans." Renamon sighed, looking ashamed of herself.
"Huh? So, you used to dislike humanity or something?" He asked.
"Yes, I used to dislike humans, just like the rogue Digimon I fight." Renamon would proceed to elaborate more.
"I used to not like them, but on that day, I rescued you from the Seadramon, I changed my viewpoint on humanity." She sighed, reflecting on her past.
"Now I protect the people of this city, to try and make up for my past mistakes." After hearing this, Wulf feels bad for Renamon and places his hand on her shoulder. However, Renamon would just take his hand and place it back to his side.
"I want to digivolve and be with you. But do I deserve to have you? I feel I cannot forgive myself." Despite having put Wulf's hand away, Wulf decides to hug Renamon, trying to reassure her.
"It's okay, Renamon. I'm not mad at you for hating humans in the past, you're still my friend." He continued hugging her tight.
"But how can you be so forgiving of me? What about the other humans? They wouldn't forgive me so easily, and rightfully so perhaps." Renamon struggled a bit as she was hugged but stopped and continued letting Wulf hug her.
"Renamon, no one will hold a grudge against you over this. As a human myself, my species isn't the best, we have a lot of glaring flaws. Heck, a lot of humans themselves don't like humanity too much. So, some might agree with your past views instead of hating you for them. Also, in the D.R.O. building the people we did talk to complimented you, the people of this city would love you." As Renamon listened closely, Wulf would unwrap his arms around her and sit back smiling at her.
"Remember what I told you in my bedroom on Monday? We all act in ways or do things we later regret, but we shouldn't blame ourselves but make up for it. The time you spent caring for humanity and defending this city makes up for your past. So don't worry about it." Renamon knew Wulf had a point, perhaps he was right.
"I see, these are valuable points. What do you mean by humans not liking humanity too much? How can people not respect their species and all that they have done?" she curiously asked.
"Well, humans have done some bad stuff before, and a lot of people just can't forgive them for it." He explained to her.
Renamon smirked. "Well, like what you said, those people shouldn't blame their species for past mistakes, but instead make up for it.".
"Now you got it." Wulf chuckled.
Renamon got up from the bed. "I can't believe some humans would hate themselves. I understand they may have made some mistakes, but everyone does that. Why pointlessly dwell on them?". She turned around to face Wulf.
"If they do something like that, then I won't. I'm sorry for being shy lately, Wulf. I have a lot of respect for humanity, and I would like to try being around them more." Renamon smiled as Wulf stood up.
"In that case, I have an idea, Renamon. Tomorrow, I don't have school, it's the start of the weekend. If you want, we could go out and explore the city, I can show you all the cool stuff there is to do. And you get to be around a lot of nice people." Wulf proposed.
"You sure? You don't have anything to do tomorrow?" She asked.
"Yeah! I would love to hang out with you tomorrow, it would be fun." He responded.
"Alright, I would love that then," Renamon confirmed to Wulf.
Wulf felt genuinely excited and happy. This was it; he could start spending more time with Renamon. For him, it was a dream come true. He went to hug Renamon again, and this time she happily accepted it, hugging him back too. Then, a thought emerged in Wulf's head.
"So, I am curious about something." His hand scratched his chin.
"Hm?" Renamon uttered.
"If you want to be more social from now, do you want to try sleeping in my room tonight?" After asking her this, Renamon was left with an interesting question but was a lot more open-minded to it now.
"Oh, well I don't usually sleep, but I can try it tonight." She assured him.
"Great! I'll go get a sleeping mat for you." Wulf exclaimed.
"A mat? What about your bed here? I believe it can fit us both." Renamon went to inspect his standard-size bed.
"Oh, uh, my bed? But I usually sleep in it alone. I mean, it might be a bit cramped." He tried to explain without sounding awkward.
"Ah I see, don't worry about it. I want you to be comfortable anyway." Renamon chuckled.
"Ah, ok. I hope you understand. I'll go get the mat now." Wulf walked off towards his bedroom door to go retrieve what would be Renamon's first bed essentially. The mere suggestion of him and Renamon sharing a bed, especially one as small as his, made him feel rather warm inside.
He tried not to think about it too much and instead tried to think about how fun tomorrow would be. Finally, he could truly get to hang out with Renamon. For tonight, he and Renamon would sleep happily, awaiting tomorrow.
