AN: hello new and old to this little fic of mine, here is the next chapter, also with this upload the fic is up to date in all of the places that I am updating which means that now any suggestions you leave on the comments can actually influence the story moving forward so keep that in mind.

Disclaimer: I don't own HighSchool DxD or any character from other sources that may make their way into this, and neither I own the Waifu catalogue.

When considering the different options the catalogue provided its users with to insert themselves into a new world, disadvantages were not the first metric most people chose them by. A perfectly understandable thing when most contractors were so eager to begin their new life.

On the surface, [Possess] and [Substitute] were similar options that differed primarily on whether or not the user inserted itself and its memories into a target's mind and body or if they had their new body's memories inserted into themselves.

The key difference that most consider was that [Substitute] gave the user access to the emotional attachments and ingrained mannerisms that the original has had to properly insert themselves into the role of their new body.

In contrast, in the case of [Possess], the user didn't gain these traits as they were usually unneeded because the possessor normally used their new body in a world other than its original one.

As he made his way to his new classroom Millicas silently wondered over the true nature of the [Substitute] and its effect on his self.

He could perfectly distinguish the different sets of memories that inhabit his mind but it was when he interacted with the people that he was emotionally attached to before his insertion into the world that the line between the two sets got blurry.

He had noted it before when interacting with his family. A slight difference in himself and his thought process when interacting with them before and after the merge that he only recognized its existence after the fact.

But with Sona, it was a different story.

Before the possession Millicas had given up on Sona and let his love for her fade away into the background thoughts of his daily life, only wanting to rekindle the friendship they used to have back when they were children and not knowing how to reach out to Sona when she kept running away from their interactions without hurting her.

He cared too much for her to do so.

Now with his new set of memories in the mix things were different. Even if the second set of memories held no true love for Sona, they did hold a certain fondness for her character from when he read the original novels.

The combination of these two sets of memories ends up in something different and bigger than one would expect.

Millicas' love for the Sitri heiress had been reignited with a vengeance and a different path had been presented thanks to a newborn perspective.

Be it Because of the combination of his two sets of memories or simply the knowledge of what the future holds for Sona if things were to be left unaltered, Millicas wanted her.

Without a shadow of a doubt, he still loved her and he said it to her face not even ten minutes ago in the most loud and certain way he could think of at the time but he wasn't going to lie to himself.

The Gremory were devils of greed and even if his feelings for Sona were true and honest Millicas would do all in his power to get her, one way or another.

Be it manipulating her and those around her with honeyed-worded lies or simply removing any perceived obstacle with extreme prejudice and violence, Millicas didn't care.

He knew how twisted and possessive his thoughts were.

He knew how contradictory his love for her and his disregard for her input on the matter were.

But he didn't care.

He was a devil after all and she will be his.

'In retrospect, I should have expected this outcome.' Sitting on his newly appointed seat at the back of class 3-B Millicas idly took advantage of the fact that he was bored out of his mind to observe his new classmates while talking to himself in the back of his mind.

Except for a brown-haired girl at the front of the class, the rest of them were your regular run-of-the-mill humans.

Considering how much against talking to him Sona had been before their reunion it stood to reason that she wouldn't assign him the same class as her own, but considering what his observation and his supernatural senses had told him, he was the only 3[sup]rd[/sup] year devil not a part of class 3-A.

That in and of itself wasn't something Millicas was against as it gave him time to get to know his new classmates and see if any of them had any potential to be a future client or maybe even a member of his peerage.

But from the looks of it except for the pretty girl that he barely remembered as a background character in the novels who ended up interested in Issei, because of course she did, none of them seemed to be aware of the supernatural world.

After the usual introduction that was expected from the new student, the homeroom teacher had assigned him his seat and moved on to the day's lesson, a boring lecture that Millicas couldn't care less about if he tried, giving the young devil ample opportunity to do other things like practice the more subtle techniques and abilities that he had access to but hadn't prioritised during his training with the girls.

Devils like many other races had an intrinsic ability to use and sense energy.

While the energy devil kind used was called demonic power it, like the energy used by many other supernatural races, was more in line with a racially attuned magic born from their existence with devils having demonic power, angels having angelic power, dragons draconic power, etc.

This power was the thing that the different supernatural races used to fuel their inborn abilities and it also was instinctively used by their bodies to empower themselves beyond the limits that things such as build or size would realistically determine from a human's point of view.

Alongside those abilities, most races could also learn to convert that base energy into different types to use abilities and techniques different from their natural ones and the magic systems that were based around their racial powers.

This conversion however was so difficult and required such mastery over their energy that most didn't bother to dedicate the time and hard work needed to achieve it as even if they learned how to do the conversion, it was only the first step to learning other applications and techniques normally used with the converted energies.

This didn't take into account the fact that if for example, someone learnt to convert their energy into ki and later wanted to learn something that required mana they would need to dedicate the time to learn how to convert their intrinsic power to mana from zero as all the different energies in existence where uniquely different from one another.

It was because of these initial difficulties that people like Sairaorg who had trained hard and were able to use touki were so noticeable.

Like the other races, Humans had supernatural energy.

This energy was known by many names depending on who you asked but primarily it was referred to the supernatural entities of the world as lifeforce. What made humans unique to other races was their adaptability as they simply learned and grew at a faster rate than others were given the chance.

That same adaptability extended to their lifeforce, making humans the race with the easiest time to learn how to control their abilities and energies and learn new things like martial arts or magic.

This was one of the reasons that reincarnated devils were seen as useful assets for devils, apart from the replenishment of their dwindling numbers and the chance of having a sacred gear or other rare ability that manifested in the human race, it was the fact that even after reincarnation Humans kept this adaptability.

These were the traits that devils could use in both restoring their numbers from the state that the Great War and the Devil Civil War left them in alongside preparing if the tenuous cold war between the three factions even escalated once again.

Now thanks to the multiple benefits granted to him by his contract with the company Millicas enjoyed an enhanced version of that same adaptability through his Talents and an extensive set of guidelines to follow in his mastery of ki that he had primarily used since getting them to concentrate on his combat capabilities.

However, the monotonous class presented the perfect opportunity to practice the more subtle abilities.

His focus on his ki-sensing capabilities allowed him to perceive the natural lifeforce of those around him while also perceiving things like their energy capacity; if they had had their energy awakened or not; and if they had trained their usage alongside other things.

It was thanks to his practice that he could recognise the magical capabilities of his classmate on the other side of the room while also realizing that she had some type of training on how to use them, most likely from either a family member or close confidant.

If he concentrated enough he could even perceive how her energy was connected to multiple outside entities, most likely a set of familiars or something similar.

Something for the young red-haired devil to look into in the future if nothing else.

His ki sensing and his natural senses also allowed him to confirm that there was no other potentially useful student in the 3[sup]rd[/sup] year classrooms on the academy's third floor as the only other notable energy signatures he could sense here were four familiar ones in the neighbouring classroom that he recognized as his sister and the others older devils.

While he could sense more humans with potential on the lower floors and the other devils spread around them, he would prefer to take his time and look for any interesting ones.

Also, it would be easier to wait for Tarte to put together a list of potential targets and investigate their backgrounds as he asked her to do yesterday before approaching them.

After all, it wouldn't be optimal to rush things when he didn't know the best method to earn their trust.

As time passed, he noticed one of the signatures on the lower floors reacting to his ki sensing, obviously distressed by being watched by an unseen person if the fluctuations in their energy and their own but crude attempts to track him down were anything to go by.

It would have been a lot more surprising to be found out if he didn't recognize who was the distressed signature.

'Fuck, Rias is goanna be angry and bother me all day once she finds out.' Millicas thought with a defeated sigh after realizing that his training had tipped off the resident white-haired nekoshou.

He wasn't looking forward to his first lunch period.

In Koneko's humble opinion, she was a very reasonable girl for her age.

Even more so when you compare her with the rest of her fellow peerage members.

Sure she may have a tiny problem with her consumption of sweets and food.

She may also have issues with opening herself to others concerning her childhood memories, or the fact that thinking about those memories hurt her so much that she happily detached herself from them by ignoring them and even going as far as never again using the birth name that woman had given her.

But compared with her friends and their problems, she wasn't the worst-adjusted one of them, which said more about their group as a whole than the individuals specifically.

The tiny white-haired girl saw that as a solid win in her book.

Not that the competition was hard in that regard with a hikikomori cross-dressing vampire, a sadistic shrine maiden and a bishōnen avenger with survivor guilt as the separate contenders.

So, as the most even-headed one of the lots, she tended to be the one who thought before she acted. An inclination that showed itself when she was sitting at her desk during class and didn't outwardly react when an unsettling sensation of being observed from a distance appeared at the edge of her instincts.

It took her only a moment to grasp that she wasn't being physically watched from afar but someone was utilising a form of ki sensing to find her.

Even if Koneko had developed an aversion to anything relating to her life before being reincarnated as a devil, she remembered enough of that woman's lessons to realise that for the sonar-like detection method of Ki sensing she was being targeted to be effective, the user couldn't be far from her location.

If Memory served her right then at most, they must be somewhere close to the academy for them to get any valuable reading from their ki-sensing technique.

Even knowing that she needed to inform Rias of this development didn't change the fact that she had to preserve a cool head and do nothing for now.

While not allowing the user to see the target directly, ki sensing was excellent at tracking their location and their movement, the most useful thing about it was that advanced users of the technique could discern the intent behind their target actions and their emotional state.

An invaluable advantage considering that the primary users of such an advanced form of ki sensing were martial artists who used it in combat to predict their opponent's moves.

If the one using the technique had mastered it to such a degree then the position Koneko found herself in would be grim but she was certain that she wouldn't have detected the inspection in the first place if the user was a proficient practitioner of the skill.

So the best way to deal with the matter at hand was to appear as if she hadn't realised she was being watched and continue with her day as always until lunch so she could head to the occult research clubroom without raising any suspicions.

It was easier said than done as even after the user stopped actively observing her a couple of moments after she recognised the feeling she still couldn't rush the issue.

So Koneko could do nothing but sit through her lessons and count the minutes that went by until the lunch break came.

Something she did daily but not under the currently stressing context.

The worst thing about her predicament was that she had eaten all her snacks during the first recess between classes because of the situation so not only was she nervous but also hungry while waiting for the afternoon to arrive.

What a horrible Monday to start the week with.

As it tends to happen, time passed and after a fairly uneventful morning for some of its members, all the teenaged devils of Millicas' peerage met outside the main building of Kouh Academy to share their first lunch period while appreciating the food that Tarte had prepared for them that morning.

"So yeah, they seem nice if a little bit boring but it isn't that different from talking to other children down in Patch that aren't training to be huntsmen," Ruby commented while munching on a piece of teriyaki chicken.

The devilish trio lay down on a tablecloth under one of the bigger trees enjoying the shade that it provided them.

"That's great Ruby." Nodding gently to his pawn sitting by his right shoulder while the two of them used the tree as their improvised backrest Millicas turned his attention to the blond-haired girl in front of him.

"What about you, Tarte?" He asked his maid kindly. "Did you like your new class?"

"The majority of them seem nice enough," Taking a second to put down the teacup she was drinking from a moment ago the servant replied softly before her gaze focused on her master, a severe expression appearing on her previously calm face. "That said, the ones you informed us about weren't what I was expecting."

Hearing the barely restrained anger in his knight voice, a notable thing considering how much control the assassin normally had over her emotions, the red-haired contractor suppressed an amused smile. "I didn't know that the two of you would end up in their class but I did warn you about their antics just in case you came across them."

"Antics isn't the word I would employ to describe those things nor their actions," Tarte replied coldly before glancing at her fellow servant. Seeing that Ruby was distracted at the moment with something on her new phone she lowered her voice slightly while leaning forward her master. "Are you certain we can move them to another class?"

I didn't take a genius to know what she was truly asking.

"Well, not now concerning the two useless ones but maybe in the future," Millicas answered before taking a second to enjoy the food before continuing.

"Regardless of those two, we can't interfere with our perverted protagonist for the moment, at least not to the point that we risk our mission."

Hearing her request denied for now Tarte sighted at the idea of having to share a classroom with those perverts for the foreseeable days to come.

While the two of them were discussing the notorious trio, Ruby pocketed her phone and turned to the two of them.

"Hey, Millicas are we doing anything important this Friday?" The youngest Rose asked her king.

"Well, I have to do some work on the weekend but nothing that comes to mind for Friday night specifically that would take the whole evening or all of us, why?" He replied to her.

"I was texting Yang and she wants to meet up after classes on Friday so we can spend time together in Vale before we go back home for the weekend, so I wanted to see if you wanted to join me as from what I gathered from our messages I think Yang wants me to meet her new team," Ruby said excitedly in a single breath.

Taking a moment to consider his schedule, Millicas replied. "I have a meeting with my company handler after school about the agent support mission but unless something comes up I don't mind going with you, I will probably arrive a little bit later thou."

"That's great!" with a radiant smile Ruby turned around and hugged Millicas tightly. "We will have so much fun, I can't wait!" Millicas embraced the excited girl back with a smile of his own.

While the trio was relishing their lunchtime together, some other students viewed them from a distance.

Taking advantage of the fact that the window of her clubroom faced the yard where her brother and his pieces were enjoying themselves Rias chose to observe them while eating her lunch with Akeno.

"Well, they certainly are having a good time." The Gremory heiress commented happily, taking joy in seeing her little brother spending time with his girlfriends in such a relaxed manner.

While her king was pleased with the scene playing out in front of them, Akeno once more felt her mood worsen by envy and misplaced indignation at the sight of Millicas' pawn.

"They do look like a close-knit group." She replied with a fake smile while concealing her true sentiments from her best friend, she didn't want Rias to know how much uglier she could truly be when her innocent king had kindly accepted such a tainted thing as herself as part of her peerage.

Taking a moment to veer away from the window Akeno took hold of the teacups the two of them were sharing and went back to the main desk of the clubroom so she could replenish them from the teapot of green tea she had prepared previously.

"I heard an intriguing thing about their morning entrance from some of the younger students." She said to Rias.

Her interest peaked at the chance to be able to hold something over her brother Rias turned around to face her queen expectantly. "What did you hear?"

"They encountered Sona-Kaichou and Shinra-san at the gate before classes began this morning," Akeno replied while handing over the newly filled cup of green tea to Rias when she returned to her red-haired friend's side.

"Well, receiving transfer students is one of Sona's duties as the student council president," Rias said as she took a sip of tea thinking over the information Akeno had shared with her. "Let me guess Sona delivered the room assignment to them and left as quickly as she could."

It wouldn't be the first time that Sona ran away from a conversation with Millicas and, as depressing as it sounded, Rias didn't think that it would be the last. Those two used to spend so much time together when they were little that even Rias herself wondered which of the two youngest Gremorys was the best friend of the Sitri heiress.

Even if those two's relationship couldn't fully return to what it once was, it would be great if at least they could talk things out.

With any luck going to the same school and having to share the overseer duties for their territory will force them to accept their past and interact with one another.

"Buchou," Akeno said with a giggle. "Did you forget that Kaichou arrived late to our homeroom class?"

"What?" The redhead said not seeing what her friend found so amusing, which only made the shrine maiden giggle even more at the cute lost look on Rias' face.

"It seems that after their initial greeting, Sona-Kaichou boldly dragged Millicas-san away by his tie to her office." She said entertained by the situation. "It was quite the sight, or so I have been told. And some of the rumours regarding why it occurred or what happened afterwards inside the student council room are very interesting."

Rias found herself dumbfounded at the news.

Sona spent years running away from Millicas only to do something like that?

Also now that she thought about it not only had Rias noted that Sona had indeed arrived late to their homeroom class, not a strange thing for the hard-working president of the student council, but she had been in an unusually good mood.

Sona looked relaxed when she arrived at class that morning which didn't sound like much for most people but to Rias who knew how little emotion her fellow heiress normally showed in any public setting was the same as if she had come to class with a delightfully happy expression.

Weirdly enough Rias could tell the difference not only because she had grown up knowing Sona but also because that time of emotional distinction between private and public settings was something her sister-in-law and her friend had in common.

'What in hell happened inside that clubroom this morning?' Rias asked herself. Before she could ask her queen for more details or look for Sona and interrogate her about what it was, their conversation was interrupted when the doorway opened and her lovely little rook entered the room.

"Buchou we have a problem." Koneko softly said after closing the door.

By the time their first day of school had ended the members of Milicas' peerage, each left the academy on their own.

Ruby was eager to go back home for the day and spend time with her mum while also getting the last bits and pieces ready for tomorrow afternoon when they would finally complete the outfitting and resourcing of the workshop and forge basement at their Sweet Home for proper use.

Tarte was looking forward to an afternoon spent doing reconnaissance of the city and its various high-interest targets and locations while also beginning to spread the anchor runes needed for a certain project the blond assassin and their resident magus had been entrusted with by their king.

With any luck, the foundations for that order would be done by Friday.

For his part, the crimson-haired king of the budding peerage was off to meet his sibling with the rest of the documentation that dealt with their joint ownership over the territory of Kuoh.

In retrospect, the sheer number of bureaucratic paperwork that went into such matters should have been expected by the contractor but it still surprised a part of him how much of it was done by devilkind.

So while his girls went away to do their thing he walked to the old school building behind the high school section of Kuoh Academy and into the clubroom his dear sister used as her office and gathering place for her peerage.

That is why he found himself sometimes later sitting on the sofa in front of his sister laughing his ass off at her worried expression after hearing her last announcement.

"Care to share with the class what is so funny, Mi-chan? Rias said with an annoyed growl in her tone. She knew better than anybody how carefree her little brother could be with some things but this was a serious situation and he needed to take it as such.

Some unseen entity had been watching her precious young rook right under their noses. Not only was it an insult that they had infiltrated their territory but the method they utilized to observe them was one not favoured by one of the three factions.

This meant that it was an even greater mystery who this entity was or for whomever they worked for if anyone at all as the usual suspect such as the church or the fallen wouldn't typically use a ki-based approach to do such actions on enemy territory. Even more so with the state of the Cold War, the three biblical currently found themselves in.

It was a breach of security that if not dealt with promptly and quietly would force them to notify and ask either Sirzechs-nii or Lady Serafall for help addressing the situation as those two were the ones that originally sponsored herself and Sona to take over the Kuoh territory after the previous owner.

If they don't do something quickly, it could mean that their parents will feel the need to take a more involved role in the observation of their territory in an attempt to keep them safe.

Rias would have thought that Mi-chan of all people would treat such a threat to his newly discovered independence, a more worrisome thing but he didn't seem to be for whatever reason.

The easygoing asshole somehow found the whole situation funny.

"I'm sorry Rias but," Millicas began to explain, cutting himself with a chuckle before continuing, "I knew you would say something after Koneko let you know yet for you to react like this."

"You knew? What do you mean you knew?" She asked him. Did he know who was observing them?

"Sorry," he declared after he took a deep breath to get his laughter under control. "I understand how it looks from your point of view but no intruder is watching us. I was bored while in class and decided to use the moment to practise with my ki-sensing I haven't had the time recently to dedicate to my more subtle techniques with all the things that have been happening."

Rias blinked after hearing her brother's explanation before sharing a look with Akeno who sat by her side and was the only occupant of the room other than the two Gremory devils.

Seeing how her king was blindsided by the perfectly logical if unexpected justification to the surprise that Koneko had shared with them that afternoon Akeno chose to keep the conversation going to give her friend time to gather herself.

"I didn't know you were proficient in the usage of ki Millicas-sama," the priestess of lighting commented with a practised smile plastered on her face. "I was under the impression you mainly used ice sorcery and the power of destruction as your primary methods of combat."

With a smirk of his own, the son of the current Lucifer easily replied to her questioning tone. "When it comes to magic then you would be right but I merely decided to widen horizons so to speak, no point in stagnating my growth by thinking that my sorcery and my inherited ability were good enough to carry me in life."

It was a commendable point of view in Akeno's opinion, even more so when she considered how many other pureblood devils she had met over her years as Rias' queen had elected to rely on their birth power and not bother with more than learning how to utilize it.

An issue that even plagued her best friend in some small regard.

Having finally composed herself Rias chose that moment to rejoin the conversation. "Since when have you been learning to use ki? Isn't it more of a martial artist thing?" She asked honestly intrigued by the situation now that there wasn't a problem she needed to deal with.

"For a while now but recently I have been focusing more on the more combat-oriented side since I can spar with the girls daily now." He delivered the half-truth to his sister without a second thought.

It was at that moment that a particular recollection crossed Rias' mind.

This led to Millicas being caught off-guard by her honorary sibling laughing out of the blue. Her reaction was so surprising that the other two occupants of the room couldn't help but share a gaze of common bewilderment before Akeno said anything,

"It's not polite to laugh at other people Rias."

"Sorry but looking back, I should have seen this coming." The girl in question explained in an amused tone.

"What? Why should have you expected me to learn how to use Ki?" Millicas asked not seeing the evident link between his new template-granted ability with his combat capabilities from before the contract.

"Well," Rias began with the teasing timbre in her tone that she used when sharing some of his embarrassing memories with others, a situation that annoyingly for Millicas, his sister was especially good at finding herself in. "Back when we were children you always followed cousin Sairaorg like a little duckling whenever we had a family gathering so is not so surprising that you're following his lead now."

She wasn't exactly wrong.

Back when they were younger, the grand majority of his interactions with people outside his immediate family were with women.

A combination of all the servants inside his parent's manor being the maids his mother individually trained, his tutors being the ones selected by his grandmother who were also to be in charge of Rias' education and the secluded lifestyle he had during his youth made it so that, apart from his father peerage members, he didn't interact with a lot of men growing up.

Even his two childhood friends were girls.

So he enjoyed spending time with his Sairaorg whenever the opportunity arrived, be it a family event like birthdays and other celebrations or simply the times when Grandmother dragged him to one of her friend's tea parties and Aunty Misla had decided to take Sairaorg along.

As he was thinking back to his childhood days, an abrupt realisation struck Millicas like a lightning bolt running down his back.

'I'm an idiot.' He thought as he quickly stood up from the couch and started to manipulate his magic to connect to the hidden Gremory sigil that Rias had branded on the room's floor.

Rias and Akeno were surprised at the sudden action.

"Millicas is something wrong?" Rias asked worriedly without her usual nickname for her brother, she knew he wouldn't go as far as trying to teleport away from an embarrassing conversation when he was more likely to shoot back with some humiliating anecdotes of his own.

"Sorry Rias but I just recalled something important I forgot to do so I need to run." He spoke in a hurry while preparing the demonic power to fuel the long-distance teleportation he was about to do.

Even if the dilemma he just realised he could help with wasn't something that would be dealt with today, he at least could go and talk about the possibility as soon as feasible, even more so considering the politics that would likely get in the way.

"Incidentally," he said with a smile while he took many pieces of crumpled paperwork out of his pocket and shoved it into his sister's hands. "I told Sona I would pass that on to you, so mission accomplished."

"Wait, where are you even going in such a hurry?" She asked, lost on how their conversation had led to the current set of events.

"Back to the main family manor, I need Grandmother's help with something important. See you tomorrow"

Not waiting for a response Millicas completed the preparations and calculations necessary for his trip before teleporting out of the clubroom and into the underworld without further explanation.

Not knowing what to do, Rias asked her friend for an answer.

"Akeno, what just happened?"

"I don't know." It was the queen's answer.
