Hey Hey! Thank you for reading and thank you for the comments, I appreciate every one of them. Love Y'all!
Tris bites her lip as she looks in the mirror trying to see if her stomach looks any bigger. It didn't but she wondered when she would be able to see the evidence of the baby growing inside her.
"Ready?" Tobias asks her coming up behind her and placing a kiss on her temple.
"As ready as I'll ever be" She quips. They were planning on having dinner with Max and Natalie to tell them about the baby and Tris was a little nervous.
"I want to ask you something…"
Tris turns around with an eyebrow raised as Tobias takes a deep breath. He'd thought about it all night as he held Tris tightly watching her sleep.
"I know things are crazy, and now that we are having a baby, it's just so much going on…I know we haven't had a chance to be together…but…"
"Are you asking me to marry you?" Tris asks with a quizzical look on her face.
"Oh no…." Tobias chuckles as he sees Tris visually relax. "I am supposed to move into Stacy's apartment since I'm officially a leader now and I want you to move in with me. I want us to be under one roof with the baby as a family" If they had been in Abnegation, this would have been a disgrace and they would have already been expected to marry if they had been courting.
Tris nods running it over in her mind.
"Is it too soon?" Tris wonders out loud.
"We're having a baby, Tris…" Tobias chuckles tickling her side which causes her to laugh.
"I'll think about it" she promises as Tobias leans down to kiss her.
Thirty minutes later Tris and Tobias have lunch with Max and Natalie. Cara was with Hana in the lab working on the antidote to the serum and already making progress filling in the gaps that Hana, Will, and Tori had missed.
"We have something to tell you" Tris announces as Natalie gets up to clear the dishes.
Tobias grabs Tris' hand and squeezes it. Natalie smiled big when Tris and Tobias revealed they were together earlier during their lunch.
"Is something wrong sweetheart" Natalie questions moving to stand next to where Max is sitting at the head of the table.
"Tobias and I….well I'm pregnant…" Tris says biting her lip.
"Oh sweetheart…this is a surprise…" Natalie says in shock. Here she was hiding her pregnancy and now she was about to be a grandmother.
She looks down at Max who looks just as surprised as she is.
Tobias actually gulps when Max narrows his eyes at him but does not say anything.
Tris bites her lip nervously as she looks at her parents waiting for them to say anything. Natalie recovers first and moves to hug her daughter tight.
"This is a blessing," she tells her.
"Are you upset?" Tris asks looking at her father who softens as he looks at Natalie and then his daughter.
"No not at all just surprised…" Max tells her getting up to hug her and then shaking hands with Tobias.
"I'm going to take care of them," Tobias says already knowing what Max was thinking. "I love her, Sir"
Max nods his head. He looks over a Natalie and Tris who are both now smiling and chattering away. He had to keep his family together no matter what.
It was dark by the time Caleb trudged home, the snow falling heavily. He, Stephan, and Elena went over the plan several times. Caleb provided him with a radio and some Dauntless clothes he had in his bag. Stephan would do some undercover work before the snow got too deep and would radio as soon as he heard something. There was a light snow coming down and it was a hard cold, and the snow would start to get heavier as the night went on now that the blizzard was upon them.
He stomps his boots at the doorway. Thankfully, the walkway was already salted, he assumed from one of their neighbors. He can see the faint light through the window as turn the knob. He sighs in relief when the warmth of the room hits him, and he closes the door behind him. While he takes his coat and boots off, he hears dishes in the kitchen. He could smell fresh bread, and the fire in the fireplace crackled. The table was already set with two settings and a few candles. Their home was cozy, a quilt gifted to them as a wedding present was neatly folded on the back of the couch. The two books he was reading were neatly arranged on the end table.
In the months he and Marlene had been married, she'd turned this house into a home, one that he looked forward to coming to every day. He'd felt off all day. He wasn't sure what their first fight would have looked like, but he was sure that it would have been like this.
Marlene emerges from the kitchen fidgeting with her apron and biting her lip. Neither one of them speaks as they both cross the room at the same time.
"I'm so sorry," They both blurt out at the same time.
They both laugh realizing they were both talking at the same time.
"I'm really sorry I should have talked with you about what I was thinking and feeling…" Marlene says quickly.
"I wasn't trying to sound like I have the final say. I just was thrown off" Caleb tries to tell her quickly.
Marlene grabs his hands and holds them as she looks up at him.
"I've been making all of my decisions for so long by myself, especially since my mom was never really around. It didn't occur to me that I was excluding you from something that you rightfully have a say in."
"I wouldn't ever want us to do something that you weren't on board with too, It's not that I don't think you should make decisions about your own body, I just thought we would have talked about it first" Caleb confesses as he brings a hand to stroke her cheek.
"Maybe we rushed into getting married, I don't know what I'm doing or even know how I'm supposed to be a wife…" Marlene sighs looking down. She loved Caleb more than anything but she didn't want to hurt him.
"Hey, look at me, I don't think that at all," Caleb says confidently, squeezing her hands.
Marlene pulls her eyes to his. Her heart quickens as she looks into his blue eyes and sees nothing but love reflected there.
"This marriage thing, it's what I want with you, I have no doubt about that. I love you and I know that we can figure it out together"
"I get it, I kind of don't know what a marriage looks like," She tells him, still feeling a bit defeated. Things are so different in Abnegation that she has no idea if she can ever get it right.
"I don't really know either, but I do think that we always have to be honest with each other and talk things out if we want it to work," he says softly.
Marlene raises her tiptoes and presses a kiss to his lips. She could forget sometimes that even though he was Abnegation, his home wasn't perfect.
"No more secrets," Caleb tells her when she pulls away.
"No more secrets" Marlene promises.
Zeke ran his hand through Tori's hair, she'd washed it before bed and the big curls were still a little wet behind the headband she'd pulled on after her shower. The snow was coming down harder and Zeke was snuggled in bed with Tori at his place. The day before had been intense, he'd spent the morning hung over after the celebration for Felix. Tori had laughed as he passed out in bed with his clothes, and even harder when he woke up hung over. After a lot of water, a hot shower, a solid meal, and half a day in bed snoozing he was feeling much better.
"Your feet are freezing" Zeke gasps as Tori pulls her feet back and places them against his thighs.
"You're so warm" she chuckles.
The blizzard was going to shut the entire city down for several days and Zeke wanted to do nothing but stay right where he was, knowing that the fighting would start soon after. He would have to check in with Max and the team soon but for now, this was perfect.
Her mood changes as they lay quietly. She doesn't know what came over her but she wanted to be all in with Zeke but she knew there was one thing that she couldn't give him.
"What are you thinking about?" Zeke asks, noticing how she is starting off into space. He rubs his hand lightly over her arm.
"My baby girl," Tori says simply. She feels her heart clench at the thought.
Zeke sucks in a breath and stills his hand. Tori doesn't look at him, she keeps staring at the wall and He doesn't say anything.
"Her name was Cassi, short for Cassiopeia, my favorite constellation. She was the most beautiful baby you had ever seen. When I first came to Dauntless, I think I went through that overwhelming feeling of trying to fit in. Amar and George were spending all their free time together and I was lonely. I met Terrance at a party one night a year after I transferred. He said all the right things, and things were great for the first year until I got pregnant. He wanted me to get rid of my baby and I refused. George and Amar were there for me through my entire pregnancy. When she was born, it was like the air in the room stopped and she was the only thing that mattered."
Zeke didn't move other than to move his hand to hers and interlock their fingers. Now it made sense why she had a two-bedroom apartment. She squeezes his hand tight. Tori sniffles as the tears start to fall. She'd been debating on telling him, but she'd been lying to herself that things with Zeke weren't as serious as they were. If she was going to move forward with their relationship, she had to tell him.
"When she was a year old, she got sick, I walked into her nursery and picked her and her lips were blue. I don't think I ever ran so fast as I did to the infirmary holding her to my chest. It took weeks to figure out what was going on. She was in the infirmary, tied up to these tubes helping her breathe. It was a birth defect in her heart, and she fought for another month before she passed away. Your mom was there for me, I slept in the infirmary every night, Hana made sure I ate, and she tried to help me process everything"
"I'm so sorry" Zeke whispers placing a soft kiss on her temple. He understood loss because of losing his father, he saw how it affected Hana and Max but he couldn't imagine what Tori was feeling.
"Terrance is a guard at the fence, he acts like he's never met me when we cross paths. Fucking coward" She spits out.
Zeke feels anger rise up in the pit of his stomach. He reminds himself that this isn't about his feelings right now.
Tori rolls over, untwining their hands and moving so she can look at him while she lays on her back, and he hovers over her.
"I love you Zeke, and you're the best thing that's happened to me in a long time. But we can't keep doing this, you're young, you deserve to have a family, I think you'll be an amazing father one day, but I can't go through that again and I'm already so much older…" Zeke can hear the sadness in her voice as she looks into his eyes.
"I love you Tori, and I'm not going anywhere. I just want to be in the moment with you every day, for as long as we have. We'll figure the rest out as we go"
Tori nods, tears spilling again from her eyes. Zeke leans down and kisses her tears away.
"Make love to me" she whispers.
He pulls on her panties, working them down while she does the same for his boxers.
When he slides into her, Tori gasps, tears spilling again. Zeke had touched her soul in a way she never thought possible.
"I love you," he tells her again, bracing himself above her as she pulls her legs up on his waist high.
She cups his face with her hands, kissing him as the sound of their labored breaths fills the room.
Marlene snuggles next to Caleb. They had piled a heavy quilt and extra blanket on the bed the night before. There was a fireplace in their bedroom, even though the heat of the house worked well. The Abnegation thought using too much electricity was selfish. They were naked, making love long into the night in the warm nest of covers, their body heat making it hot and sweaty.
"Good morning Husband" she whispers.
"Good morning, Wife" he smiles before opening his eyes.
They hadn't talked much over dinner, eating quickly and then racing upstairs frantically tearing off each other's clothes and then whispering apologizes again as they made love that night. The weight and tension of their first argument are gone but knowing that the attack was coming after this storm, all they both wanted to do was enjoy this quiet time together.
"I want to stay like this all day" Marlene sighs running her fingers gently over his abs, loving the slight ridges now forming. His body had become more toned and defined since they had been training together since getting married.
Caleb peaks his head out of the covers and looks at the clock. It was 7 am, normally he would be up already. He and Marlene would work out for 30 minutes together before getting the day started at his mother's suggestion. They had been practicing shooting on the weekends. He could feel the cold from the blizzard even though the fireplace was still crackling. Caleb grabs his sleep pants slides them on pads across the floor to the window and pulls back the curtains.
"Woah, it's really coming down. It's got to be a foot already"
"Sooooo that means we get to stay home today? Or is it selfish to take a snow day?" Marlene sing songs moving to the edge of the bed pulling the sheet and quilt with her.
"Once it stops snowing, the men will get out and help shovel" Caleb confirms. He had no idea what Andrew or Marcus was thinking but the snowstorm gave him an excuse to stay away.
"I spent most of the afternoon, preparing in case we were inside for a few days, some people think it could be a week. We've got plenty of food. John Mercer brought extra firewood and salted the walkway too since he figured you were at work"
"Oh, I'll have to thank him," Caleb says absentmindedly.
"I baked extra loaves of bread for Mrs. Haskins and Mrs. Mulvaney, I made sure to send one home with John too"
"You going for Abnegation wife of the year?" Caleb teases.
"Well, you know my husband is a councilman, I have to lead by example," Marlene says matter of factly. She wondered if the war wasn't coming, would this be their normal life and playful banter?
Caleb grins and comes over to kiss her on the neck. She impatiently tugs on his pants to pull him back into bed fully intent on taking advantage of the snow steadily falling outside.
"I don't want to think about what's coming, I just want to enjoy us being together like this" She whispers as he looks down on her and settles between her legs.
Caleb nods in understanding and leans down to give her a soft kiss. An hour later they are both trembling from their intense lovemaking.
"You know, I mean no offense when I say this but no one in Dauntless would believe me if I told them a stiff has been the best lover I have had" She laughs catching her breath and clutching the sheet over her breasts and looking at the ceiling.
Caleb laughs and then turns his head to look at her.
"No offense taken; I just happen to like pleasing you, very much"
"Well, I'm not complaining at all" She rolls over and props her head up on her hand to look at him.
"Are we okay, after yesterday, really?" she asks with a hopeful tone.
"Yeah, we are. Did you want to have kids at all? I guess I just assumed that's what would happen"
"I guess I never really thought about it until we decided to get married, I'd never really seen myself settling down. What about you?"
"Well, I just figured it was what came with the package of choosing Abnegation, it's what you do. I just know I wanted to be a good father, nothing like mine"
He picks up her hand and brings it to her lips to kiss her fingertips.
"I know what you mean, I don't want to be my mom at all"
"I get why you made the decision you did, now that I've had time to think about it, you're right we should wait, who knows what's going to happen"
"Thank you" She leans in and kisses him softly. He opens his arms and she turns around so she can snuggle against him with her back to his chest.
"Can I ask you something?" He wonders aloud wrapping his arms around her.
"You know you can ask me anything"
"What factions did you get on your aptitude test"
"Amity and Dauntless," she replies interlocking their fingers.
"That makes sense, you like seeing people happy and making them smile"
Marlene blushes a little bit and Calebs chuckles lightly. "What did you get?" She asks now curious turning around so she can look at him.
"Abnegation and Amity"
"I can see that, you're so selfless, especially when we make love, I think it's one of the things that's made you a great lover"
"We'll I've had a great teacher" Caleb murmurs and moves his hand to cup her breast watching her as his thumb gently circles her nipple.
"See, you've got that look" Marlene moans as she feels her body tingle.
"Do you like this?" he asks feeling her nipple pebble beneath the pad of his thumb.
"Ummm hmmm" she confirms licking her lips and closing her eyes.
They were a wet and sticky mess but neither cared, Caleb slid down and pulled Marlene to straddle him. She pumps him a few times and then slides down gasping as he fills her.
Caleb scouts so he could lean up and place his mouth where his thumb had just been teasing.
"Yes, I love that" Marlene confirms, rocking feeling him slide in and out.
"I love exploring your body" he whispers.
"Well we have nothing but time right now" Marlene moans and they lose themselves in each other again.
Natalie felt like she had been on edge the past few days. She had taken a nap that afternoon and woken up to the sound of Max in the kitchen. She was suddenly going stir-crazy. She still hadn't had any morning sickness, but her hormones had her feeling all over the place. She was worried sick about Caleb and Marlene now that the blizzard had set in, the attack on Abnegation would be coming soon. Tris was pregnant, she was happy for her daughter, she was an adult and a faction member after all now. If she had stayed in Abnegation it would probably be the same. It was her pregnancy that had her troubled.
She hopped out of bed and went to the bathroom. She stared at herself in the bathroom mirror. She looked fuller. She knew it was because she carrying Max's child inside her. Her breasts were fuller. She turned to the side inspecting her stomach, and the curve of her abdomen was noticeable now. She had been wearing big shirts, holding her stomach in when people were around. She and Max hadn't made love in the past week with Max going on his mission to Candor and the craziness that ensued after was the only reason they hadn't been intimate in the past week.
Was she going to spend the rest of her life in this apartment? What would happen when she was ready to have her baby? It made her anxious thinking about it. She exits the bathroom to find Max pouring a cup of coffee.
"Hey, I brought home some dinner last night, you were sleeping so I didn't want to wake you up. I can put together some breakfast or I can go down to the cafeteria to get you something"
"I'll find something to eat," Natalie says the frustration evident in her tone.
"You okay?" Max asks carefully, noticing she isn't her usual self.
"Max, how long are we going to keep this up?" Natalie asks after she opens the fridge and then closes it suddenly.
"What are you talking about?" Max asks confused.
"This, playing house, pretending that everything is fine… We can't do this forever"
Max is completely caught off guard turning to follow her as she walks to the living area.
"Where is this coming from Nat? I know this isn't a permanent solution, but we don't have to rush to figure it out…"
"No that's fine for you, I'm just stuck here, day in and day out, with only the rooms in this apartment to look at, you can do whatever you want, go wherever you want."
"Whoa, you know I'm trying to keep you safe, you've been able to see Tris and Hana, I thought this is what you wanted…"
"You have exactly what you wanted, our little family here, and that's all you care about!" Natalie yells in frustration.
"How can you be so naive, Max? Other people deal with what we deal with every day, families separated, not getting to see their loved ones, wondering if they are safe or warm and have enough to eat. You don't get special treatment because you're a leader. You can't just decide to pluck me out of the bunch and not think about the rest of the Factionless"
"So, you won't even try to help us figure out a way? You don't want our family to be together, you're just going to give up?" Max paces now, upset that Natalie would be willing to leave him and Tris again.
"That's not what I'm saying at all and you know it. What do you want me to do Max? We can't keep living in this lie. What do expect me to do stay locked up in here for the rest of my life? We can't just keep pretending like this is going to come to an end at some point."
"And what's the other option, Nat? Go back on the street? Let Evelyn stab you in the back again? "
"I need to talk to Evelyn, reason with her…" She could always get Evelyn to reason with her, maybe she could again. She was her best friend, they had been through so much together.
"Now who's being naive? How do you think Jeanine's soldiers knew exactly where to find you" Max spits. "They were after you, not me, and Stacy happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time"
Natalie feels her knees give out and she wipes the tears from her eyes knowing he was telling the truth.
"You all can move on without me" She whispers, not knowing what else to do or say now. Everything just seemed so overwhelming.
"That's your solution, you want us to just pretend you're dead again? I can't do it again, Stop trying to be so goddamn selfless. This isn't just about you, Nat."
Natalie hears the pain in his voice and sees the tears form. Max wasn't one to show vulnerability, he was too Dauntless. She knew she had hit a nerve, and it was one that only she could hit.
"When we heard you died, I was standing on the ledge of the chasm with a bottle in my hand, ready to end it all. If we couldn't be together in life, I was ready to join you in death. The only thing I had held on to before was knowing you were in Abnegation, safe and with your baby because that's what you wanted. But I can't…I can't... "
Max feels tears fall down his cheeks as he turns his back to Natalie. She quietly gets up and moves across the room. Max feels her turn him around and wrap her arms around his waist but Max backs away from him.
"I've shown you time and time again that I was willing to give up everything for you and it's always you getting to decide what's best" Max reminds her.
"I'm sorry," Natalie says feeling ashamed for how she was feeling "Max, I'm trying, I want us to be together but I…" She couldn't bring herself to tell him about the baby. She had no idea how they were going to make this work.
"I'm going to go to the training room and give you some space."He says coldly grabbing his jacket from behind the door.
Natalie doesn't say anything, she just nods. She winces when the door slams when Max leaves.
