I kept running until she realized that he wasn't following me. From there, I was able to get a cab before I called Max. I definitely didn't want to go home with a black eye. I was glad that I hadn't driven because my vision was blurred. I waited a minute before Max answered the phone.
"Hello?" She asked. It sounded like I might have woken her up.
"It's me." I explained. I was pretty sure that she would have been able to tell that from my voice. "I'm coming over."
"Do you know what time it is?" She asked. I wasn't wearing a watch but I was pretty sure that it was pretty late and I couldn't check while I was on the phone.
"I can't go home looking like this." I declared. I didn't want my parents to find out about this. "I'll explain when you see me. The cab's pulling up now. I need you to open the gate."
I sat in the car as I waited for her to come to the gate. I saw that it was after 11:30. Once I saw her, I got out of the car and paid the driver. I was glad that money really wasn't an issue for me. I hoped Max wouldn't see my black eye, even though I was pretty sure that she would see it eventually. Once I saw her, I ran over to her and hugged as tears ran down my face. She then took me inside. After a few minutes of me crying, she finally spoke.
"What happened?" She asked. I assumed that she assumed the worst, even though it probably wasn't the worst thing that could happen. It was pretty close though.
"He wanted me to sleep with him and I said no." I whimpered before I blew my nose. "Then I slapped him and he pushed me into a table."
"That asshole!" She yelled. I hoped that she didn't wake her parents, but her house was massive, so I doubted it.
"I feel like such an idiot." I replied. I also felt like an idiot for crying like this. "He was first boyfriend and he hit me."
"Don't you dare blame yourself!" She shouted which made me jump. "This is not your fault. I'll give you some Tylenol and then we can get you to bed."
I sent Cody a text that I was staying over and Max's house. I felt like I needed something to eat, even though it was pretty late. I had a muffin and she also gave me some Advil, which meant that it I needed to have the food anyway. She then took me to her room and gave me some pajamas to wear. I washed off my makeup and got changed before I got into her bed. I was pretty sure that I was grabbing onto her in my sleep. The good news was that I didn't seem to have nightmares like I thought I would. I was pretty sure that I wouldn't want to date another guy for a while.
I ended up waking up before Max did. I wasn't sure what time it was, but I knew that I didn't want to go to church with her with a black eye. I heard that there was a way to cover it up with but I would have to figure out how to do that. I walked out of the shower wrapped in a towel when I noticed that she was a awake.
"I think I'm gonna get out of here." I told her as I opened up her dresser. I was glad that we were the same size. "It's okay if I borrow some of your clothes, isn't it?"
"Yes of course but you don't need to go anywhere." She answered before I started to dig through her clothes.
"Thanks but I'd rather not walk into a church with a black eye." I replied before I picked out an outfit and dropped my towel. I was glad that Max were more comfortable with her. It meant that I was okay with being naked around her. "We can hang out after you get back. I'm gonna have Cody come pick me up."
I needed to get my phone. I had a feeling that Cody showing up would be awkward. I then noticed Max looked at me like she figured out the other thing that happened. Maybe she saw the marks on the sheets.
"Zoey, are you on your period?" She asked. I really didn't want to tell her about that.
"Yes." I replied with a blush. It was a little bit embarrassing. "I took one of your tampons and put it in after reading all of the instructions.'
"I can help you with this." She offered. I really didn't need any more help with it and it was embarrassing enough.
"I don't want to inconvenience you." I remarked. "I remember everything I need to know from Anatomy class."
Yes, that was a class that I was now in. I was glad that Max was helping me study because I didn't know anything about it. Anatomy was not like I thought it would be. There was only one guy in the class and he looked like he didn't want to be there.
I found out that Cody was there and headed out to greet him. I got inside of car and he was a little bit surprised by my face.
"Why do you have a black eye?" He asked me. For some reason, I felt like I didn't want him to know the truth.
"I accidentally got hit in the eye at the game." I lied. I hoped that he would believe it. I didn't know if he would because it wouldn't make sense why I would go to Max's house and not home.
"Then why did you come here?" He inquired.
"Because I didn't want to wake anyone else up or explain why I had a black eye." I declared. "Can we please just go?"
"So how did the date go?" He inquired.
"Well they won the game, but I don't think there are going to be any other dates." I explained. I figured that I needed to change the subject so he wouldn't ask any more questions. I had to find the correct topic. "So when is Bailey's flight going to get here?"
He started to talk about Bailey and I was pretty sure that I successfully distracted him. I mean I did want to go to the airport to meet her if I was able to, but it was mainly meant to distract him I also didn't want him to know about my period.
A few hours later, I got a text from Max saying that she was at the Tipton. I put on a video about how to cover up a black eye and I was able to find something. It helped that I apparently sometimes wore extra makeup when shooting videos. I headed down to the lobby and saw her.
"Here you go." She told me before I realized that she had my jacket and handed me the prom ticket that I had given Trent. I was a little bit confused.
"What did you do?" I asked her. Had she gone to Trent's house or something?
"I just paid Trent a little visit to give him a taste of his own medicine." She told me with a smile on her face. I was surprised to say the least.
"Max, you're the best." I told her before I gave her a hug. I couldn't believe that she did that for me, but I figured that I shouldn't be surprised.
"I know I am." She stated as she hugged me back. "So how about we take Cody's suggestion and just go with each other to prom? You know as friends."
"It would be less awkward." I agreed. It would also make it easy to get ready together. I didn't know what getting ready for prom would entail, but I assumed that she would be helpful. "Sounds good to me. I didn't think you would be going."
"Well it looks like you have an extra ticket now." She joked. Had she not bought a ticket? That was a little bit surprising. "Now I wonder if my parents will let me pick which dress I wanna wear."
I was able to go to the airport to meet Bailey with Cody. I couldn't help but notice that she had brought a rather large bag for just a few days. The good news was my eye was starting to heal. Max's parents took the three of us to the spa on the day of prom. We all were getting ready in her room. I had still had the same dress. Max had a red spaghetti-strapped dress and Bailey had a black wraparound dress with a matching headband.
The reason that we getting ready at Max's house was because the dance was at the Tipton. It meant that we could take her limo. Cody was wearing a red tux which actually made him look more like an usher than a student. I remembered hearing him swear very loudly when he found out the store had mixed up. It seemed like things that happened to him a lot.
As we arrived at the hotel, Cody took Bailey's hand as they walked in. Max decided to do the same with me. She was my date and I didn't see anything wrong with it. Plus we were best friends. There was nothing wrong with holding each other's hands.
The dance was going well until the girl that was singing covered her mouth and ran to the bathroom. The guitar player took the microphone. That was weird and very awkward.
"Are there any singers in the house?" He asked.
"Zoey, you should go up there." Bailey said. "I mean you won't miss any dances."
"Yeah you might as well." Max agreed. I kind of felt like I didn't have a choice. I then walked my way over and everyone looked extremely excited. I must have had some fans at the school.
"What do you want me to sing?" I asked.
"Do you know 'I Could Not Ask for More' by Sara Evans?" The musician questioned. That was a good song. Well the version that I knew was by Edwin McCain, but it was the same song.
"Yeah." I answered as I took the microphone and the band began to play.
Lying here with you listening to the rain
Smiling just to see the smile upon your face
And these are the moments I thank god that I'm alive
And these are the moments I'll remember all my life
I've found all I've waited for
And I could not ask for more
I could not ask for more than this time together
I could not ask for more than this time with you
Every prayer has been answered every dream has come true
Yeah right here in this moment ss right where I'm meant to be
Yeah here with you, here with me
And these are the moments I thank god that I'm alive
And these are the moments I'll remember all my life
I've got all I've waited for
And I could not ask for me
I could not ask for more than this time together
I could not ask for more than this time with you
Every prayer has been answered every dream has come true
Yeah right here in this moment ss right where I'm meant to be
Yeah here with you, here with me
I could not ask for more than the love you give me
Cause it's all I've waited for
And I could not ask for more.
As soon as I stopped singing, I couldn't help but notice that everyone was cheering. It seemed I had a lot fans here.
"I'll take it from here." The guitarist said as he took the mike and began to sing a faster song. I then walked back over to Max.
"You were really good." She told me. That was what everyone told me. I couldn't help wonder if I actually could have a career in it. Maybe it was something to talk to my dad about. "Now how about we head to the dancefloor and let loose."
"Sounds like fun." I agreed before I realized that I knew the other song. "I could have sung this one too."
"Yeah but you've done enough work. Now it's time for play." She told me. I blushed at that and so did she. "Okay that did not sound sexual at all."
I couldn't help but giggle as we danced to the fast-paced song. However, as soon as the song was over, another slow song started to play. We tried to get off of the dancefloor but the two of us were surrounded by adjoined couples. It looked like there was only one thing that we could do.
"Guess we have no choice." Max commented as she took me into a ballroom hold. I blushed, not just because it was her, but mainly because I wasn't expecting to dance with anybody. We received a few stares for dancing together but we couldn't exactly get off the floor. Besides there was nothing romantic about our dancing like some of the couples. We did however have a little bit of a hard time keeping straight faces. When the music stopped, we separated. I was pretty sure some of the guys of the guys were expecting us to kiss or something like a few of the other couples, including Cody and Bailey, were doing.
The two of us picked up some refreshments and headed to our table where Bailey was sitting.
"What was that about?" Bailey asked.
"We were kind of surrounded and didn't want to be rude." Max explained.
"And it actually wasn't that bad dancing with her." Zoey pointed out. I wondered if she was going to say anything.
"So did the two of you really going to a ball a few weeks ago?" Bailey asked the two of us.
"Zoey's been to one." Max explained. "I've been to twelve."
She probably didn't need to tell her that. I wasn't sure if Bailey really cared about how many balls she had gone to.
"Wow, your family must have a ton of money." Bailey stated as she took a sip of her punch. I wasn't going to have any because I wasn't sure if it was spiked or not and I didn't want to find out by getting drunk.
"Yeah I'm a junior debutante." Max replied. "That's junior hoping to never become a real debutante."
"Why do you hope to never be one?" Bailey asked. Okay maybe she did care?
"Did I mention that I'm a little bit of a tomboy?" Max responded. I was pretty sure that I would have told her that. "Plus there's the whole being on display thing and being told to find a husband."
"I see what you mean." Bailey declared before she turned to me. "So Zoey, how's life been treating you?"
"Well it's been full of surprises the past few weeks." I answered with a bit of a chuckle. I kind of wished that I could have told her, but she definitely wouldn't understand.
"So I think Cody and I are going to finish what we started on Skype." Bailey mentioned with a mischievous grin on her face. She didn't need to tell us that. I wasn't surprised but I didn't need to know it.
"Please, please, please lock the door when you're doing that." I begged "Walking in on my brother once was bad enough."
"Alright." Bailey agreed. "I think I'm gonna find him and get out of here."
"Attention everyone." The principal interrupted. I tried to remember her name but I never could. "I would like to announce the winners for prom king and queen. First up is the king. Please give it up for James Garrett."
A boy with blonde hair walked onto the stage and there was a round of applause. I thought that they usually wanted them to gather or something.
"Who's he?" I asked.
"He's a senior." Max answered. Well obviously, since only seniors ever won. "But he's pretty cute."
"I'd actually have to agree with you on that." I remarked. I was surprised that I thought that, but I was probably more surprised that she thought that.
"And now for your prom queen. Oh my…for the first time in Cheevers High history, a junior has won the title of prom queen." The principal continued. What did that mean? It didn't mean what I thought it would, did it? "Please give it up for Zoey Martin."
It did. I couldn't believe that I was prom queen. I was probably one of the only girls that wasn't super excited about it. Part of it was because I didn't even think it would be a possibility. I at least had to act like I was. I headed over to the stage for a second time and a tiara was put on top of my head.
"And now the king and queen will share one last dance." The principal said. Okay I couldn't help but be a little bit nervous about sharing a dance with a guy that I didn't even know.
"Hi." I stammered as the two of us danced together.
"So, Zoey huh? That's funny. My ex-girlfriend's name is Zoey." He replied. That was a bit of a coincidence but it probably wasn't that uncommon of a name. "So you're a cheerleader, aren't you?"
"Yeah I am." I replied. I wondered if he knew about my channel. You know I was pretty sure that I wanted to post a singing video. It sounded like it would be fun. "And I think I remember seeing you on the soccer team."
"It was rugby actually." James corrected. There was then a moment of silence. "Could I have your number after we're done with this? Maybe I could ask you out some time."
I gave him my number real fast. I hoped that I wasn't making a mistake because I was still really nervous.
When the night was over, Max and I returned to my room. We could hear the sounds of Cody and Bailey coming from the other room.
"So are you really thinking about going out with him?" She asked. I decided that I would do something. She seemed jealous. I needed to know and I figured this would be a good time for her to tell me.
"Unless someone else is interested." I replied. I had to be a little coy because I didn't want to bluntly ask her if she wanted to go on a date with me.
"What if someone else was interested?" She questioned.
"Hmm? I replied. Yeah, I was right. She was interested. She then pressed her lips against mine.
So Zoey and Max kissed. What's going to happen as a result of this. James is Austin Butler's character from Zoey 101. Please don't forget to review
