It was a fine evening, a few months after Harry Potter was born, where one would find a couple getting ready to leave the house for an evening for the first time. The one that was reassuring them that it was all going to be fine, was Sirius Black, their best friend.
"You know where we are, and send a patronus if you need anything, okay?"
Sirius grins at his best friend and mock salutes, nodding. He could do this. Babysitting Harry wasn't going to be an issue. He wasn't panicking inwardly whatsoever.
"Of course, mate. You and Lils deserve a date night, don't worry about us."
"And Remus is on his way, right?" Lily asks, to make sure.
He nodded, still acting like he believed everything would be fine. It really would be. He was sure of it. He wasn't sure who he was trying to prove that to. "Yes, now off you go or you'll be late!" he ushers them out of their house.
He winked at James as he closed the door and he looked down at baby Harry, who was looking at him with those big, crystal-blue eyes. He was settled, and Sirius wandered into the sitting room to sit down on the sofa. The moment there was a pop, wiped the confident smile off his face.
What was he going to do with his Godson? How was he going to look after him, alone, for the first time?
And it seemed Harry could sense there was something wrong because he started to whimper.
"Shhh," Sirius said quietly, rocking him back and forth in his arms.
It didn't work and he looked at Harry, thinking about what could he do to distract him, he placed Harry down on the carpet and started tickling him.
"Waahhhh!"
Oh, Merlin. That definitely didn't do anything to help. He wished Remus would hurry up and get here, to save him from this horrifying sound.
But it was just him; so he tried to think of what he could do to distract Harry — and it didn't take long before he came up with an idea.
He took out his wand and muttered to himself like he was doing it for the first time; he had done this a few times. Swish and flick… he thought to himself as he did the movement, he said, "Wingardium Leviosa!"
He watched, as the carpet moved all the way to the ceiling, with Harry on it.
It looked bumpy and unsafe, but his Godson had stopped crying… so…
He started to panic, however, as he lost control of the powerful spell, the carpet flew, very close to the ceiling and around the sitting room.
He closed his eyes and winced as he prepared for that screeching sound but instead, he heard the sound of laughter.
Harry was giggling and hitting the carpet to go faster and Sirius couldn't believe his luck.
It worked!
He decided to see if he could make the carpet move up and down and all around the house, to see what would happen. It's the best he's performed the spell, too!
Remus headed to the Potter's after a long day. He had time to have a shower and get changed before he set out on his way, though. He knew James and Lily asked Sirius to babysit their six-month-old, as they went on a date. He also knew that Sirius asked him to keep them both company.
It was because Sirius was nervous about being Godfather, it being his first duty for it. But he had faith in him. More than any of them really knew.
He opened the door with his spare key and ran into the kitchen as Sirius struggled to keep Harry up in the air on a flying carpet, of all things, his arms outstretched as Harry and the carpet fell.
He caught him, by the skin of his teeth and cradled him carefully in his arms, checking he was okay. He stared at Sirius, with raised eyebrows, and an expectant look on his face as baby Harry giggled and then yawned in his arms.
"I-I can explain!" Sirius stuttered.
He kissed Harry's forehead and rocked him, slowly. "You decided to do Wingardium Leviosa, the one spell you've always struggled on, to… what, exactly?"
He watched as Sirius smirked. "To get him to stop crying and it worked! I did it for like ages before the spell let me down, and Harry enjoyed it!"
Remus rolled his eyes fondly.
"Would you have done that if James and Lily were here—"
"No, no. Don't tell them, Moons! Please, I'll do anything!" Sirius practically begged.
His heart raced as he stepped closer to Sirius, blushing as he asked the first thing that came to mind. "Go on a date with me?"
"So now, Harry," he said as he wrapped up telling the story with a huge grin on his face that just wasn't going away anytime soon, as they ate dinner with Remus, "you can say you've been on a flying carpet."
Harry looked at Sirius with his mouth open in complete shock and he folded his arms across his chest and pouted as his Godfather and Remus laughed at his expression.
"But I don't remember; that's not fair!"
