''This is a disaster! A complete disaster!''
Ferra and Metal Sonic rolled their eyes, having spent the last ten minutes watching Dr. Starline pacing around the room, muttering under his breath. They were at the main Egg Base that doubled as Tamago Corporation, with Dr. Eggman having told them that he would take advantage of his deal with ARMS and personally go check every single Egg Base to strengthen their defenses, even at those he had used to as storage units. Apparently, he had been working on some kind of project, but hadn't told them anything about it, which left Starline in a state of anxiety.
The antsy platypus was bothered, if not even offended, that he couldn't be part of his idol's project and complained to everyone in his earshot, those people mainly being Ferra, Metal Sonic, Orbot and Cubot, who all secretly agreed that Eggman went to visit his other bases to get away from a nagging Starline. After realizing that he wasn't getting any reaction, Starline folded his arms across his chest, huffing indignantly.
''Don't you have anything to say?'' he asked.
''Honestly, I'm fairly certain that we will learn soon what Dr. Eggman has prepared for us and the rest of Neos City. After all, he loves to brag about them,'' Ferra pointed out.
''Still, why couldn't he include me in this project? I'm certain that I could've helped him out,'' Starline protested.
''He didn't include me nor Metal Sonic, and you don't see us complaining,'' Ferra noted, with Metal Sonic nodding in agreement. Starline's eyes narrowed.
''You're just a mere Enforcer masquerading as an intern, so there's no reason to include you into anything that doesn't involve fighting,'' he responded, waving with his gloved hand in a dismissive manner. Metal Sonic shot him a glare, but Ferra didn't appear too bothered. As for Starline, he continued, ''I, on the other hand, am Dr. Eggman's most loyal supporter and assistant. I should be front and center in this project.''
''I'm sure that he'll make sure to include you into it once he's back,'' Ferra told Starline, who looked rather offended.
''Include?'' he asked aghast, giving Ferra a look of disbelief. ''I should be spearheading this project together with the Doctor! I should be the one to help him take over Neos City and eliminate Team Neos!''
''Do you even have any ideas how to achieve your goal?'' Ferra asked, raising an eyebrow.
''Of course I have!'' Starline snapped back in a haughty tone, turning on his heel, muttering under his breath, ''I will show you…''
Ferra and Metal Sonic observed Starline as he left, with Ferra feeling slightly concerned, only to hear Metal Sonic's thoughts, 'I may not be programmed to feel this, but I believe the sensation that appears whenever Starline is around is referred to as a ''headache''. Am I correct?'
''You absolutely are,'' Ferra replied.

''To be left back like some kind of flunky… This is disgraceful! I'm not some pathetic Enforcer like these two…'' Starline muttered under his breath, walking into a private room with a computer and a workshop that Eggman allowed him to have, much to his delight. Starline took full advantage of this, having access to the EggNet and spent his days carefully studying all the files Eggman had and made sure to make his own copies of them, even doing commentaries on some of Eggman's previous plans. Interestingly, something Starline had noticed was that Eggman kept records of that he realized in the video games, manga and TV shows of the Sonic the Hedgehog universe.
Scoffing at the thought of even calling that world ''Sonic's World'' – They should've called it ''Eggman's World'' since that's what it's going to become one day, Starline thought to himself – the self-proclaimed fanboy started scrolling through the files. They were filled with detailed data on many of the machines and robots had created, like the Death Egg, the Eggrobo, Mecha Sonic, Tails Doll, Hard Boiled Heavies, Shadow Androids, as well as data on the various creatures and eldritch abominations Eggman attempted to manipulate or take control of, like Solaris, Dark Gaia, Time Eater, the Deadly Six, Infinite and the Phantom Ruby… even The Titans and THE END had their entry in those files, although Eggman had marked them as ''Need More Research''.
While Starline had been told that there was no reason to repeat certain plans, especially if they were complete failures, he felt that there was a certain appeal in those failures. After all, only because a plan didn't work out in one setting, it didn't mean that they couldn't repeat it in a different setting with specific modifications. They simply needed to improve and innovate on what was established, and Starline believed that he was the person who could achieve that.
His primary goal was to find something that could be tailored to stop Sonic specifically. Of course, it should also be something that could deal with the whole of Team Neos, but he knew that Sonic would be the greatest danger to their plan. After all, he and Eggman had been trapped in an endless cycle of countless battles, most of which unfortunately ended in Eggman's defeat.
However, Starline believed that he had managed to crack the code. All of these losses were clearly because they happened in this so-called ''Sonic's World''. With Sonic being the main protagonist of those video games, he obviously couldn't lose a battle against his arch-enemy, Dr. Eggman. But now, they were in the real world, on Earth, which meant that Sonic didn't have anymore his video game protagonist plot armour that would protect him from getting removed from this vicious cycle.
Not to mention, Starline was certain that, while Sonic knew how to fight in general, he would be quite helpless if he faced an opponent from the video games. He clearly lacked experience and Starline doubted that Sonic would be someone to study his video game counterpart. Of course, his human partner might have the knowledge, but Starline was sure that once he set his plan into motion, any necessary communication between the two will be cut in the heat of the battle.
''Hmm… This looks promising,'' Starline muttered, smirking as he observed the file before him. ''The Spirit of Water; now, that should be quite a problem for a hedgehog who cannot swim, as well as cause mayhem in the city itself. He also has multiple forms, but needs to have a steady supply of Chaos Emeralds, which might be a little problematic, but still something doable, as he unlocks new forms with every Chaos Emerald he gains. Obviously, the pros outweight the cons here. While a creature of intelligence, he can be controlled… I believe that this is where my talents come into play.''
Starline clasped his hands, his malicious smirk even wider. ''It would take some preparation, but this just might be what we need.''

Sonic was lying on a thick tree branch in the shade of leaves, allowing for the scarce sunlight of the afternoon sun to keep him warm as he took a nap. Things were rather quiet this week, and while Sonic was ready for some kind of excitement, he knew that the same couldn't be said for Lucas, who was taking a nap underneath him, leaned against the tree trunk. He was still wearing his school uniform, albeit having removed the blazer due to the heat, and was relieved to be finally done with exams for this semester. He was mentally exhausted and needed some time to recover and recharge before he could even think about doing anything. Nevertheless, from their earlier conversation, Sonic was quite happy to hear that Lucas was willing to spend his remaining free time outside, even suggesting to let loose at the Solar Stadium, having to admit that his encounter with Chase did spark something in him. But for now, this was a bit of a slow day.
Sonic lazily opened one eye when he heard Lucas address him from below, ''Hey, something we haven't tried to do yet…''
''What is it?'' Sonic asked.
''Have you ever thought of trying to find Dr. Eggman's base?'' Lucas asked. Sonic smirked, the thought being quite appealing, with Lucas continuing his idea, ''I mean, we know the locations of two Egg Bases, but we don't know where the main Egg Base is.''
''Do you plan on attacking it?'' Sonic asked. Lucas shook his head, only to realize that Sonic couldn't really see him from this angle and smiled.
''No, not really… but I had figured that it would be a good idea that know where he is in the case of an emergency,'' Lucas replied.
''Heh, considering how much trouble Eggman has caused, one would think that it would be for the best to storm his base,'' Sonic pointed out.
''Yeah, but where's the challenge in that?'' Lucas replied, a sly smirk on his lips. An identical smirk appeared on Sonic's lips, and he figured that Lucas knew him quite well.
''I guess we could investigate a little,'' Sonic replied, looking over at his partner. ''Have you managed to rest?''
''Yeah, for the most part…'' Lucas stretched his arms, grabbing his blazer, messenger bag and hoverboard. ''I'll just go home and get changed, and then we can do some adventuring.''
''Sweet!'' Sonic leapt off the tree branch. ''Do you want to race back home?''
''Sure. After all, there is a reason I asked Warren for the accelerator,'' Lucas replied, getting on the hoverboard and getting ahead, with Sonic following him.

''This should be it,'' Starline said to himself, then reached for a rectangle device, an AR Field generator. He stood up, setting his own plan into motion. Despite having access to all of the AR Fields within Neos City, he knew that he couldn't just activate this particular area in the middle of the city, so he needed to find a place that was more remote in order to not draw attention. The last thing he needed was to let the Irregular Hunters, or worse, Team Neos, know what he was up to before the plan could be fulfilled. ''I cannot rush ahead. This is only step one.'' Starline sighed, already feeling tired due to the long journey that was ahead of him and wishing that things were easier. He then slapped his cheeks, a determined look appearing on his expression. ''No, if I complete my plan, I will be praised and appreciated by the Doctor! I need to do this for our- uh, his sake!''
Confident, he kept walking, not even noticing Orbot and Cubot who exchanged confused looks when they took note of his mood. Cubot scratched his head. ''Uh, should we ask what's going on?''
''I think we'll find out soon enough,'' Orbot said, not really wanting to get involved in whatever Starline was up to.
As for the platypus, he took advantage of the Tricore, using the Speed Core to rush through Neos City and towards Starlight Lake at Infinity Forest. While it was usually a popular destination, there were fortunately no people around and Starline felt that it was secluded enough for him to proceed with his plan. He activated the portable AR Field generator and entered the new area, which revealed itself to be the Mystic Ruins. Starline took a deep breath as he braved through the ruins of the ancient echidna civilization, making his way towards a specific spot. If things were just as he calculated them to be, he would be able to not only find what he was searching for, but unleash what had been sealed within these ruins. But, why did he choose Mystic Ruins instead of Angel Island for this plan?
It was actually quite simple. For him to allow Angel Island to be generated, he needed a much stronger AR Field than the one he had, and that would mean that Angel Island would appear above Neos City, which would draw a lot of unnecessary attention. However, the Mystic Ruins would blend with the foliage of Infinity Forest, which was enough for him, since all he needed was the Altar of Emerald. Said altar was a stone structure that had fallen into disrepair, surrounded only by a few pillars and dried up water basins. On top of it was a large green diamond-shaped gem, with Starline smiling in delight as he realized that the AR Field had actually generated this powerful artifact.
''The Master Emerald! How peculiar…'' Starline had climbed up to the top of the shrine, taking a moment to inspect the fabled Master Emerald. When the Chaos Emeralds had appeared, it was because the AR Field itself reacted to Shadow's Chaos Power, but the Master Emerald seemed to simply appear because it was connected to the Altar of Emerald. Starline wasn't certain whether that assumption was actually correct, but he couldn't rely on it. It was certainly a flaw on his plan, but he didn't have the time to iron things out, especially not when he was certain that it would work regardless.
He then pressed the red Power Core on his Tricore, his body glowing red, and punched the Master Emerald, smashing it into pieces. Starline then shielded his face with his arms as the emerald shards flew all around him, and in the corner of his eye, he could see an orb of light fly away. When he looked back towards the empty shrine, he was met with a humanoid lifeform with a body made of water-like energy, two fin-like protrusions on the back of his head, sharp flaps on each side of his head, and a tall bulge on top of his head. He also possessed no facial features, except for two pupil-less lime green eyes. Lastly, he had a round pink brain inside his transparent head, with a brain stem on the bottom.
This was Chaos, The God of Destruction, in his Chaos 0 form. Starline knew that he had to be careful in his presence. When Chaos made a sudden move towards Starline, the platypus quickly bowed as a sign of respect, causing Chaos to stop for a moment, observing him carefully.
''Greetings, Chaos, Guardian God of the Chao! My name is Dr. Starline, and I had been the one to free you from your imprisonment with a humble request to listen to my plea,'' Starline said, hoping that Chaos would take his bait. Chaos, in turn, just stared back at him, then nodded, allowing him to continue to speak, much to Starline's relief. ''I have managed to learn about your history through the ancient texts, particularly your battle with the Knuckles Clan.'' Starline could sense Chaos' silent rage at the mere mention of the Knuckles Clan. ''Believe me, I understand how you feel. In fact, you can see just how bad things have gotten since.'' Starline continued, pointing at the ruins, with Chaos gazing at the remains of the altar and the surroundings. ''I came here to help you fulfill your mission. I believe in your cause, and I have even brought a gift for you.''
Chaos stared at Starline as the platypus suddenly revealed a purple Chaos Emerald, presenting it to the water deity. ''It had been quite difficult to find one, but this should help you in your mission.''
Chaos extended his hands, holding the Chaos Emerald and absorbing it into his body. Starline smirked as he saw the Chaos Emerald inside Chaos' body, only for it to dissipate into data particles, revealing a tiny black device that lodged itself into Chaos' brain. Suddenly, the glow in Chaos' eyes grew dull and he remained motionless. Starline chuckled darkly.
''Ah, yes… Unfortunately, that Chaos Emerald had a fatal flaw – it is not the real Chaos Emerald, but a perfect imitation that has a control device inside it. From now on, you will only follow mine or Dr. Eggman's orders,'' Starline said, placing his hands behind his back as he walked down the stairs, with Chaos following him obediently. ''I still need to find a way to recreate the real Chaos Emeralds, and once that is done, you will regain enough power to aid the Eggman Empire in taking over Starpoint Area. Doesn't that sound exciting?''
Chaos didn't respond, acting more like a zombie who blindly followed Starline's orders. The platypus relished in his achievement, impatiently awaiting the moment he would tell Dr. Eggman about his achievement. He didn't even notice the bright pink orb of light that hovered above the two as they left the Mystic Ruins and appeared at Starlight Lake. The light itself was in distress, aware that she couldn't let Chaos be used like this.
''I need to get help! Perhaps, if I find the last Guardian…'' The light's ethereal voice echoed in the woods and she flew away, following Starline and Chaos towards Neos City.
Unknown to all of them, Big and Froggy had been fishing on the other side of the lake, close enough to witness the strange events. Big tilted his head in confusion, ''Huh? What happened?'' Suddenly, Froggy started to hop away, clearly sensing trouble, with Big getting up and following him. ''What's wrong, Froggy? Wait for me!''

Dr. Eggman walked into the Egg Base, feeling quite tired, but also satisfied with the work he had done. He had decided to take advantage of this lull to check on his other bases and the Badniks that were defending them. Even if he didn't have to worry anymore about ARMS, there was still Team Neos he had to deal with. Nevertheless, he figured that he could send a few Badniks just to annoy them while he was busy with his actual scheme. What he didn't expect to find at the Egg Base was Dr. Starline in the company of Chaos.
''What is the meaning of this?!'' Eggman growled, clearly irritated by the sudden appearance of an entity he didn't want to deal with ever again. He glanced at Ferra and Metal Sonic who had been arguing with Starline just a moment earlier, with Ferra just shrugging in response.
Starline was startled by Eggman's negative reaction, but he did expect this to happen since he went behind the Doctor's back to fulfill his plan. Nevertheless, he figured that he would understand if he knew the reason for it. ''I understand your anger, even if its a little misplaced-'' Eggman frowned at that remark. ''However, I wanted to present you my idea of finally getting rid off that pesky Team Neos. I had been thinking long and hard about what the next best move would be, and I have made several arguments-''
Starline was startled when Eggman suddenly waved him off in a dismissive manner. ''Spare me the monologue, Starline, and get to the point.''
''Oh, right. Well, the point is that Team Neos has no experience fighting Chaos, and with his water powers, he would be able to flood Neos City for you to take over it. Not to mention, according to the data you have graciously given me, Sonic's main weakness is water. I see this as an easy win,'' Starline explained, feeling quite giddy and waiting for the praise to come. To his surprise, Eggman remained silent. He didn't appear to be angry, but he wasn't approving anything either, instead looking more like he was lost in thought. He then scoffed.
''Even if Team Neos lacks the experience in fighting Chaos, this doesn't mean that they don't have information about how to fight him. There is a reason I refuse to use any of my old plans,'' Eggman replied. Starline was stunned.
''B-But, please reconsider this plan, Sir! I have even made sure that Chaos would obey your command,'' Starline replied, only to grimace. ''Admittedly, we would need the Chaos Emeralds, but I'm certain that it would work.''
Eggman stared at him, still silent. It seemed that he was indeed reconsidering it, as a malicious grin spread on his face. Admittedly, he knew that he shouldn't go back on his word, but perhaps he could take this opportunity to cause some trouble for Team Neos and keep them on their toes. ''Fine, I'll allow you to proceed with your plan as you wish.''
''Really?! Thank you so much, Sir!'' Starline clasped his hands in glee, his eyes sparking in joy. However, the excitement quickly vanished when Eggman spoke again.
''I will put you in charge of this, meaning that if you fail, you will face the consequences.'' Eggman's tone was quite sinister and he gave Starline a devious gaze.
''I-I won't disappoint you, Sir…'' Starline replied, feeling a little anxious.
''Excellent! As for the Chaos Emeralds, I believe I have the solution to the problem,'' Eggman said, gesturing for them to follow him to the main room of the base. Orbot and Cubot were already inside, having been prepared the computer for this as Eggman had instructed them. Starline, Ferra and Metal Sonic exchanged confused looks, with a mind-controlled Chaos standing right behind them. Eggman sat in the swivel chair, showing them what appeared to be some kind of schematic. ''While Team Neos had been dealing with ARMS, I've been busy analyzing every possible data in regards to the Chaos Emeralds and how to re-create them. You all remember how they appeared in the first place, don't you?''
''Yes! It was Shadow's Chaos Energy that caused them to materialize within the AR Field,'' Starline immediately said, with Ferra giving him a look that screamed 'Show off!'.
''Exactly,'' Eggman replied, pulling up another screen. ''While a bit complex, it is actually possible to create a spike of Chaos Energy that, while not the same, would be close enough to the one Shadow had created. I was fortunate to read some of the ARMS' files on Shadow and matched them with the data I had gathered.'' Eggman scoffed, muttering under his breath, ''Those fools had no clue what they were dealing with.'' He then turned back to the monitor. ''There is a downside to this. If done successfully, it will affect a much wider area than planned, affecting all of the AR Fields within Neos City and part of Infinity Forest, meaning we wouldn't even know where the Chaos Emeralds would appear. Furthermore, some changes might occur within those AR Fields, meaning that this experiment won't go unnoticed. In other words, you will have to prepare for Team Neos taking the offensive.''
Eggman noticed Metal Sonic clenching his fist, clearly ready to duke it out with Sonic again. Ferra then chimed in, ''We can handle them easily. I don't think that this will be the same situation we had at those Zone AR Fields.''
''I hope the same situation won't repeat,'' Eggman replied. ''Starline, you're free to leave now.''
''Yes, Sir!'' Starline saluted happily. ''I won't disappoint you!''
Starline left, with the mind-controlled Chaos following him. Eggman watched them leave, then turned back to Ferra and Metal Sonic. ''As for you two, I have an important task.''
He snapped his fingers, with Orbot quickly hurrying up and giving Metal Sonic a black gem shard on a string necklace. Metal Sonic and Ferra gave it a confused look, with Ferra asking. ''What's that?''
''That little gem is actually a device that acts as a syphon for Chaos Energy. When I was thinking about the methods of how to create an arificial spike of Chaos Energy, I realized that I would still need the real deal for it. Therefore, you two will seek out Shadow and force him to battle you while using his Chaos Powers. The device should detect that energy, absorb it, amplify it and send it back to the server I had created, which then connects to all of the AR Fields within Neos City. Once done, the Chaos Emeralds should appear,'' Eggman explained.
''I feel that there is a 'but' to it,'' Ferra replied in a deadpan tone. Eggman leaned back in his seat.
''The only issue would be that you'd have to search for the Chaos Emeralds, as they'd appear in random places,'' he replied. Ferra sighed, rubbing the back of her head.
''Of course…'' she muttered, while Metal Sonic placed the necklace with the black shard around his neck. The two then left the room, leaving Eggman alone with Orbot and Cubot.
The mad scientist narrowed his eyes, turning back to the monitor, intertwining his fingers as he observed the screen. He had taken note that many things in the world he originated from worked differently in this reality. Nevertheless, he quite enjoyed solving puzzles in his free time, and this was just another one he had solved. It kept his mind occupied and it caused chaos for other people – the perfect combination.
''Orbot, Cubot! I have a task for you two,'' Eggman suddenly said, turning to his assistant robots. Orbot and Cubot were a bit startled to hear this, but both turned to their Boss.
''What kind of task, Boss?'' Orbot asked.
''Send a message to Egg Base Omega. I believe that it's time to finally awaken the E-100 Series,'' Eggman replied.
xXx
Shadow leapt back, blocking Metal Sonic's attack and attempted to punch him back. He had absolutely no clue from where Metal Sonic had appeared, nor why he attacked him, but rest assured, the earlier punch was strong enough leave a crack in the building behind him. Shadow then used the narrow alleyway between two buildings to pinball between them upwards, only to curl up into a ball and homing attack Metal Sonic. Surprisingly, Metal Sonic managed to stop him and throw him back, with Shadow landing on top of the building, far above any prying eyes. He stood up, his eyes narrowing as he gave Metal Sonic an inquisitive look.
''I know that your arch-enemy is Sonic, so why would you attack me out of the blue?'' Shadow asked. He knew that he hadn't really done anything to provoke a sudden attack, unless Metal Sonic was interested in the snacks he had bought for Touka, which were now lying on the ground below them, scattered and squashed.
Metal Sonic, predictably, didn't respond, and instead fired a blast of energy from his chest at Shadow. Shadow was faster, managing to dodge the blast and quickly summoned a Chaos Spear, intending to use it to pierce through Metal Sonic's chest. However, to his surprise, Metal Sonic's eyes suddenly sparked neon blue and he caught Shadow's arm and the Chaos Spear with his own hands. Shadow's eyes widened as he realized that Metal Sonic had actually been empowered via Chaos Surge, meaning that Ferra was close, and had been keeping it at a low level long enough to full him. However, he couldn't understand the purpose of this attack. Gritting his teeth, Shadow let go of the Chaos Spear, twisting his wrists in order to grab Metal Sonic's arms and throw him over his shoulder. He then threw another Chaos Spear at Metal Sonic, but unfortunately for him, Metal Sonic used his Black Shield to deflect it, getting in a tripod position as he glared at Shadow. The black shard around his neck started to glow, with Metal Sonic glancing at it, realizing that the gem was responding to Shadow's Chaos Energy. All he needed to do was to keep him occupied.
Shadow summoned another Chaos Spear, with Metal Sonic raising his arm up in anticipation, only for Shadow to suddenly warp behind him and place the Chaos Spear behind his neck, holding Metal Sonic in place. ''What are you up to?''
Metal Sonic didn't struggled with this position, but the black shard continued to glow stronger and stronger. Suddenly, a spark and a flash of light came from it, blinding Shadow and allowing Metal Sonic to punch him in the gut, causing the dark hedgehog to stagger back. Shadow prepared himself for another attack, but before Metal Sonic could do anything, a sudden wave of energy overwhelmed them, spreading through the AR Field in this area.
Shadow was stunned by what had just happened, and even Metal Sonic was amazed that the plan had worked, with both hedgehogs observing their surroundings. It was only brief, but the street below them had changed to one they didn't recognize. For a moment, they felt as if they were inside a different city. Fortunately, things immediately returned to normal.
''What… happened?'' Shadow muttered, immediately turning to Metal Sonic and clenching his fists. ''What have you done?!''
Metal Sonic gave him a cold stare, then flew away. Shadow narrowed his eyes, gritting his teeth. He knew that this was a sign of trouble and that Dr. Eggman was probably behind this. However, instead of chasing after Metal Sonic, he leapt off the building, cushioning his fall with his air shoes, and after taking care of the scattered snacks, he rushed towards the Taylor Workshop, already sending a warning message to the rest of Team Neos.
xXx
''Whoa, what was that?!'' Sonic exclaimed in shock, him and Lucas being in Sentoraru when a wave of energy spread through the AR Fields, catching them off guard. Their surroundings had changed for a moment, and while Lucas was briefly able to recognize where they were, everything turned back to normal. Sonic turned back to his partner. ''What happened? Do you have any idea?''
''I'm not really sure, but it felt like the AR Fields malfunctioned…'' Lucas said, a troubled look appearing on his expression. ''Call me crazy, but that street looked like a part of Station Square.''
''What?'' Sonic felt as if he had heard this name before, but he couldn't remember where he heard it. However, he trusted Lucas with that knowledge. ''So, what do we do?''
Before Lucas could even answer the question, both spotted a puddle of water suddenly slithering towards them, only to form into a humanoid form, one Lucas was quite familiar with.
''No way! Chaos?!''
The God of Destruction stood before them, eyeing both Sonic and Lucas and ready to destroy them.
