Chapter 38
The next morning Jennifer was in her office when her cell rang with an unknown number. Not an unusual occurrence for a real estate agent.
"Hello this is Jennifer Taylor."
"Hello Jennifer. This is Mark's mother Gigi. We met at the hospital when the children were in that accident."
"Yes Gigi, I remember meeting you and Alan."
Jennifer couldn't help raising her eyes heavenward. She couldn't help wondering how this in-law relationship was going to play out.
"I'm sure you were thunderstruck as we were by the engagement news the children have sprung on us."
"To be honest, I knew that Molly and Mark were getting serious about their relationship so I wouldn't say I was shocked. I'm glad they are waiting until after graduation."
There were a few moments of silence from Gigi.
"Well Alan and I are still concerned that they haven't thought this through. They don't have jobs lined up or a place to live. We feel they need to slow down and listen to some advice from those who are older and wiser.
We are hoping we could all get together and discuss the children's future. If you are available one night this week, I could make reservations for us at a restaurant we enjoy."
"Gigi, I'm not sure a restaurant is the best place for us to meet for a discussion. Why don't you and Alan come to my house for dinner."
More silence from Gigi and more eyes raised to heaven for Jennifer.
"I wouldn't want to put you to all that trouble. The restaurant would be our treat. I think it is customary for the prospective Groom's family to host the first meeting."
"It really is no trouble for me to make dinner for six people. I think it would be more relaxed to eat at home. Easier to have a discussion."
Gigi sounded apprehensive.
"Six?"
"Yes. I thought Mark might have told you that I am in a relationship. Tucker and I live together."
"Oh yes, he did mention you had a gentlemen friend. I didn't realize you lived together. I thought perhaps you were including Molly's brother. I'm hoping this meeting will be just parents and the children."
Jennifer had a sinking feeling about why Gigi and her husband were anxious to limit the guest list.
"Well, I can't ask Tucker to leave the house for the dinner. He has known Molly for some time, and they have a good relationship."
"Oh! Of course, I understand. That's no problem. We'd prefer to limit this meeting to the people who really matter."
Just as Jennifer suspected, homophobia was behind the desire to limit attendance. That was a bridge that had to be crossed but not during this call.
They decided on Friday night for the dinner. Jennifer texted Molly about having lunch. They agreed to meet at an Italian restaurant near Kinnetik.
When her mother told her about the call from Mark's mother, Molly smirked.
"So now you know. Mark's parents are completely opposed to us getting married next year."
"Do you know what in particular they object to? Are Justin and Brian part of the issue? Gigi wanted to be sure they were not included in the dinner."
Molly's expression hardened.
"Mom, I hadn't even considered that aspect. His parents' voiced objections have been about us being too young. They feel we don't have a good plan about jobs and where we will live. To be honest I have not had any serious discussions with them. All my info is from Mark. I suspect if his parents did say anything nasty about Justin and Brian, he would avoid telling me. He knows how furious that would make me."
"Molly, you and Mark have to discuss their objections before Friday. If his parents' approval is important to him, alienating them is not a good way to start a marriage. Of course, you know I will not sit by and watch them express anything negative about Justin and Brian without confronting them.
You have to be sure that Mark understands how important your relationship with your brother and Brian is to you."
Molly smiled at her mother.
"If Mark doesn't know that already, he is an idiot. Do you think I would allow Alan or Gigi to criticize my brother or Brian? I am getting married at their house no matter what Mark's parents' objections may be."
Jennifer smiled and nodded her head. Molly giggled.
"I just got a vision in my head of Granny's reaction if Mark's parents said anything mean about her darling boys. She has enough money to have them done away with if they piss her off."
Once Jennifer was done laughing, she did say "Language" to her daughter.
They enjoyed their lunch but they both felt some apprehension about the upcoming dinner.

On Monday morning Melanie was up early and off to work before six o'clock. JR heard Mama moving around and getting ready but just rolled over and went back to sleep. Sometime later Aunt Leda came into her room and said it was time for breakfast.
JR was a little annoyed that Aunt Leda was just as determined as Uncle Bri and Uncle Jus about eating some fruit before she got a waffle. After breakfast Aunt Leda suggested a trip to the park once JR was dressed. JR thought that was a great idea. She told her new aunt that she sometimes went there with Nina and Uncles Ted & Blake.
JR was happily pushed on the swings and Aunt Leda waited at the bottom of the slide to catch her. After the park they walked to local store and had ice cream cones. Aunt Leda said it was okay to have ice cream so early in the day since it was a dairy product. Almost like having a big glass of milk. That made JR laugh.
At home Aunt Leda cleaned up the hall where the water had leaked from the bathroom. Part of the ceiling had fallen. JR was happy to help, she was in charge of the dustpan and brush. Next they had PB & J sandwiches for lunch.
JR thought this new aunt was lots of fun. She didn't have art she had to do or work she had to catch up on.

It was late afternoon on Tuesday when Jennifer walked into the Kinnetik lobby. She knew from Molly that Brian would be in the office today. She walked up to the reception desk, smiled and said help to Vicki, the senior receptionist. Vicki had worked for Kinnetik almost from the beginning.
"Hi Jennifer. Are you here to see Ted today?"
"No Vickie. I'm going up to see Brian. How is your granddaughter doing? Justin told me about her accident."
Vickie handed Jennifer a visitor's badge. Her granddaughter had fallen off a ladder while painting her new house.
"Thanks for asking. She is doing much better. The cast on her arm may come off in two weeks. Congratulations on your big news. Molly's engagement has been the hot news item on the company grapevine."
Jennifer gave her a big smiled and thanked her. Michael was the other receptionist on duty and had been a phone call. Jennifer was turning to leave just as he hung up. She gave him a small smile and said hello.
As Jennifer went up the stairs to Brian's office, Michael turned to Vicki.
"You didn't check with Carole to see if Jennifer had an appointment to see Brian."
Vicki chuckled.
"Jennifer does not need an appointment to see anyone in this building. Her sons own the business."
"Brian is NOT her son. He is no relation to Jennifer Taylor!"
Vicki chuckled again.
"I think Jennifer and Brian would disagree. You know Michael, I always wonder whether your brain damage occurred at birth or happened later. Either way keep your senseless babbling to yourself when you are working with me."
Michael started to respond but the look Vicki gave him had him turning away.
Upstairs, Carole greeted Jennifer with a smile.
"Hi Jennifer. Was Brian expecting you today?"
"Hello Carole. No, he didn't know I was stopping by. Is he too terribly tied up today?"
Carole chuckled.
"I don't think the Boss would ever refuse a meeting with you. Cynthia is in with him, but I think they are probably about done. With the boss only coming in parttime we keep his schedule pretty fluid.
Actually, Cynthia always meets with him first and she lets him know what or who needs his attention. I think they are just doing a recap of some of his meetings."
Greg appeared with a folder of information that he placed on Carole's desk. He gave Jennifer a big smile.
"Grandmom Jen! This is an unexpected pleasure. Kevin will be so jealous when I tell him I got to give you a hug and kiss today."
After he delivered the promised hug & kiss, Jennifer rolled her eyes and frowned at him.
"You calling me "Grandmom Jen" is even worse than Brian and his "Mother Taylor" title."
Greg laughed.
"In our house "Grandmom Jen" is the highest accolade that can be conferred on anyone. Kevin is still talking about his weekend with you and "Grandpop Tucker"."
Jennifer had a huge smile on her face.
"Well, you know I treasure all my time with Kevin. He and Gus are just pure joy for Tucker and me."
Greg felt tears come to his eyes and he grabbed Jennifer in a tight hug.
"You know that Roxanne and I are grateful and thankful that you came into our lives. You have made such a wonderful difference in all our lives."
Jennifer softly patted Greg's cheek.
"That enough of this. I have an appointment later and I don't want to have to redo all my makeup."
Greg smiled before he turned and walked back to the art department.
Just then Cynthia walked out of Brian's office.
"Hello Jennifer. Great news about Molly and Mark! You have raised a very special daughter. I have really enjoyed getting to know her better this summer. I'm glad Brian has been home so much. That gave me the opportunity to work with Molly. She is out with a couple account execs today. At least one of them thinks she is spying for me."
Jennifer and Cynthia chuckled.
"Well she is thrilled with the time she has spent with you."
Carole was telling Brian that Jennifer was here to see him. He told her to send Mother Taylor right in.
Cynthia smiled.
"There was all good news for the Boss today. I left him in a good mood for you. Great timing if you have any requests for him."
Jennifer returned the smile before walking into Brian's office. He was standing by the door to welcome her with a hug.
"To what do I owe the honor of a visit for you today?"
'There is just something I wanted to talk to you about before I broach a subject with Justin."
Brian led the way to the seating area of his office. Once they sat down, he turned his attention on Jennifer.
"Is this wedding related? I already told your son that we will pay for anything little Sis wants.'
Jennifer shook her head.
"That is a future discussion but there is no need for you to pay anything for the wedding. I wanted to talk to you about Lily and Liam.
I know you are not interested in formal religion. While I am not as devoted as your mother; I would like the twins to be christened. However, if you prefer that not to happen, I will understand and never mention it again. I wanted to talk to you before I mentioned anything to Justin.
Mama has mentioned christenings to me. I told her that the decision was up to you. Whatever you decide is final. Neither Mama nor I will broach the subject again."
Brian worked hard to keep his no emotion face in place. He was always thrown off guard when Jennifer expressed her sincere feelings for him.
"I have no objections to Liam and Lily being christened if it makes you and Granny happy. I do have a request. I've had a couple interactions with Father Bolton at Good Shepherd. I'd like you to include him in whatever plans you make.
Of course, it goes without saying that you have to get your son to agree."
Jennifer was very surprised about Brian's request about Father Bolton. She was wise enough not to express that surprise and assured Brian she would get Justin's approval for whatever the christening plans were.
Jennifer gave Brian a quick kiss on the cheek before she left the office.
QAF-QAF-QAF-QAF
Jennifer let her mother know about her meeting with Brian. Granny wandered out onto the patio where Justin was giving Lily a bottle while John fed Liam. This was a day camp day for Gus. Peter was floating on a chair in the pool and reading.
Both Justin and John looked over at Granny with a smile when she sat next to them. Once the babies finished their bottles John handed Liam to Granny and went back in the pool.
Justin put his son and daughter on their cushion and smiled as he talked to them. Lily looked like she was paying attention to her Papa. Liam eyes were in constant motion looking around. Granny said he was trying to figure out the world.
Once her great grandchildren fell asleep, Granny turned to Justin.
"I talked to your mother before I came out. I have been deputized to discuss something with you."
Justin had a puzzled expression on his face as he looked at her.
"What's up?"
"Your mother and I would like to have Liam and Lily christened. We know you and Brian are not into organized religion, but a christening would mean a lot to us."
Justin was annoyed.
"I am a little suspicious about the timing of this request. You pick a day that Brian is at Kinnetik. I hope you don't think I would agree to this without talking to Brian. Truthfully I am a going to be pretty annoyed if you two are trying to keep Brian in the dark about this."
Granny reached out and took Justin's hand.
"Oh Justin, we would never do that. Both your mother and I respect and love Brian too much to try and force a decision about his children without his knowledge or input.
Actually Jenny wanted to get his honest opinion. That is why she went to see him at Kinnetik. We felt you would go along with a christening, but we didn't want Brian to feel pressure to agree.
Jenny went and talked to Brian today and he has no issues with having the twins christened."
Justin's good mood was restored knowing that Brian's feeling had been considered by his mother and grandmother. He still wasn't convinced that Brian had no issues with christening their children, but he would reserve final judgement until they talked. He was shocked by what Granny had to say next.
"Jenny told me that Brian had a request for the christening. He wanted a priest from his mother's church to have some role. Do you know this Father Bolton that Brian seems to like so much?"
Justin chuckled.
"Father Bolton was a big help with Clair's first attempted money scam. She said Joan needed a new roof and went to Father Bolton for assistance. He came to see Brian and then had a roofer check Joan's roof which of course did not need to be replaced.
When they met Father Bolton told Brian that he thought all love came from god, so if Brian and I love each other that came from god. Not exactly the official opinion of the Catholic church. Brian liked him so much that we gave a pretty substantial contribution to his parish for their adult daycare. Joan actually briefly attended that when she first broke her collar bone."
Granny and Justin sat and chatted. Gus arrived home ready to share everything that happened at camp. Alice had picked him and her grandson up today.
He settled on Justin's lap with a snack of homemade cookies and some juice. Granny was a very enthusiastic listener to everything Gus had to tell them. The big news from camp was that one of the rabbits had babies. Everyone was amazed how small the babies were. Gus said he told everyone about his baby brother and sister and how tiny they were when they were first born. He said now they had gotten much bigger. He let his audience know that no one else at camp had any twins in their family. Justin smiled at how proud Gus was of having twin siblings, almost like he played some role in their appearance. When his monolog started to run down, his Papa suggested he go put on a swimsuit.
Gus thought that was a great idea and went up to his room to change. It amazed Granny that in personality Gus reminded her of Justin even though he looked so much like Brian.
"Justin, he is such a delightful child. He is so loving. Honestly, he reminds me of you at that age. Of course, he is a much better big brother than you were at first to your baby sister. I enjoy every minute I spend with Gus."
Justin had a huge smile on his face, although he did roll his eyes at the big brother comparison.
"I always wonder if Brian would have been more open with his feelings like Gus if he had parents that weren't such total assholes."
Granny nodded and squeezed his hand.
"Brian is pretty special just as he is. We should be grateful for who he is not who he might have been."
"That is true Granny. I am grateful for him every day."

On Tuesday morning Debbie arrived to pick up her granddaughter for the day. Joe came along with her. Leda answered the door with JR at her side. JR gave a big hello to her Joey and Grandmom. Aunt Leda sent her to go potty before she left.
Leda smiled at Debbie.
"You don't seem surprised to see me, so I guess you knew I was in town."
Debbie also smiled.
"Yes. There aren't many secrets in our family. I did hear you were in town."
"I want you to know that I'm not here to start any trouble. With Lindsay's new issues I am just helping out with JR and the house. I am sleeping in Gus's room. This is not romantic. I know Mel has burned a bunch of bridges and we have talked about that. I am very aware that Brian and Justin are not the villains in this drama.
I would like to ask your advice. There are a lot of Gus's toys down in the playroom. I could get some containers and pack them up. Gus probably misses his toys. I have no idea where Brian and Justin's house is or if I would be welcome there. Do you have a suggestion about how to get the toys to them?"
Debbie thought for a moment.
"You should call Ted at Kinnetik. I know Brian has started back to work parttime. If you take the toys there, he could probably take them home."
Leda nodded, just as JR reappeared. She turned to Joe.
"You must be JR's Joey. I didn't mean to ignore you. I know she is crazy about you and that you never get tired of pushing her on the swings."
JR was busy nodding her head to confirm what Aunt Leda said. Joe chuckled.
"Nice to meet you. Little Miss and I both enjoy our time together. She's my best girl!"
JR moved closer to Joe so he could pick her up and give her a kiss on the cheek. The little girl had a huge smile on her face.
"Joey is so much fun. I love him a lot."
Leda could see how pleased Joe was. She gave him a pat on the arm. She leaned forward to give Debbie a quick hug which she returned. She told JR to have fun and she would see her later.
She could hear JR telling Debbie and Joe her plans for the day as they walked to the car. Leda chuckled, she agreed with the opinion of many that JR was truly her mother's daughter.
She called Ted and he agreed with Deb's plan to have Gus's toys dropped off at Kinnetik. Leda said she would get the toys packed up and bring them over later in the week.

Justin spent some time on the pool with Gus. Both his cousins played ring toss with him. Justin lay on lounger close by Liam and Lily who were on their cushion under awning. He divided his attention between the twins and the threesome in the pool. Granny was resting in the pool house.
Gus was tired out for a day at camp and time in the pool. He came over climbed onto the lounger and snuggled with Papa. In just a few minutes he was sound asleep. His younger sibling also dropped off to sleep.
Justin put his arm around Gus who snuggled closer, still asleep. He watched John and Peter playing a pool game. They were throwing a toy over their shoulders into the pool and then racing to see who could retrieve it from the bottom first. He had a smile on his face, feeling very content and happy watching his family.
Brian, home from Kinnetik came out on the patio and walked over to Justin and leaned down to kiss him.
"Welcome home."
"What's up with you Sunshine? You have a funny look on your face."
Justin chuckled.
"I think my answer will annoy you. I am sitting here with my second favorite snuggle buddy, watching our babies safe and sound asleep, and our nephews enjoying themselves in the pool and feeling very content with my life. Now that you are home, everything is perfect."
Brian smirked.
"Well that is a ridiculously romantic thing to say. However, I reluctantly admit that I understand that feeling. You have helped me to understand what a content and happy home is all about."
Brian chuckled when Justin's smile got even larger, and he squeezed Brian's hand. Brian leaned over to give him another kiss before saying he was going upstairs to change. On his way through the kitchen Alice let Brian know dinner would be bed ready in about an hour.
When Brian came back outside his three children were all awake. Gus ran over to give Daddy a welcome home hug & kiss. He laid down on the cushion with his sister and brother. As Gus talked to them, the babies intently watched him.
Daddy and Papa watched the interactions and laughed at some the faces Lily & Liam made. Gus laughed also which made his brother and sister make more silly faces. Brian said he thought the twins were trying to figure out what was happening.
When Liam and Lily started to fuss, Gus said he would get Alice to heat their bottles and hurried inside. Justin turned to Brian.
"I hear my mother came to see you today. Are you really okay with a christening or were you just trying to avoid a confrontation? I will support whatever you truly want. I have no problem telling Mom and Granny we reconsidered."
"Justin, you do know I am not really afraid of your mother. If I objected to the request I would have said so. If it makes her and Granny happy, I don't see any reason to upset them.
I know you are always on my side."
Justin leaned over to kiss his partner.
"Always!"

Debbie could immediately see a difference on her granddaughter. She seemed happier and was less demanding than usual. There were several mentions of Aunt Leda, each one accompanied by a smile.
In the back seat of the car JR told her Joey that Mama had dinner with her last night. She said how Mama said she had work to catch up on, but Aunt Leda told her the work could wait. Joey asked Little Miss if dinner together was a normal thing. Little Miss shook her.
"NO. When Mama told Mommy she had work to do, Mommy never told her the work could wait."
JR was obviously impressed by Aunt Leda standing up to her Mama.
Debbie listened to the conversation and wondered how long Aunt Leda would be staying. When she left what would happen to her granddaughter. Debbie wished she had any idea what that answer might be.
Once they got to Debbie house, Joey and Little Miss left for the playground.

Once Jennifer got Brian's approval for christening Lily and Liam. She asked her mother know she should broach the subject with Justin.
After that she called the pastor at her church. She got a couple available dates for the christening. Next she called Father Bolton. When Jennifer mentioned Brian was the reason for her call, the church secretary let Father Bolton know who was calling.
"Hello Mrs Taylor. This is Charles Bolton."
"Hello Father. My son, Justin Taylor, is Brian Kinney's partner. They recently had a son and daughter. I am arranging a christening for Lily and Liam. Brian would like you to be a part of the christening."
Father Bolton was surprised by this call. He certainly didn't want to upset Brian, since he had been so generous with his donation to the senior daycare, but he didn't see how he could host a christening at the church.
"That is very nice of Brian, he seems like a fine man to me. Of course, I know about your son's artistry. I have to tell you that since none of you are parishioners, I couldn't have a baptism for their children her at Good Shepherd."
"I completely understand your position. The christening will be at my own church, Christ Episcopal. We are hoping that you could attend and add your own blessing for the twins. Brian especially requested I ask you.
I got some available dates from my pastor."
Jennifer and Father Bolton settled on a date that worked for everyone. Father Bolton asked if Joan Kinney would be invited to the christening. Jennifer admitted she wasn't sure and asked if that made any difference to his attendance. The priest assured her he could attend either way.
Jennifer realized that she hadn't even considered inviting Joan. She would have to leave that decision to Brian. Her attendance would raise quite a few issues. She knew explaining who she was it Gus would be foremost to Brian and Justin. This would require a face-to-face discussion.
QAF-QAF-QAF-QAF
Leda found some empty plastic containers in the attic. She spent the morning packing things in Gus's room and some of his toys from the playroom. She filled 6 containers and realized she would probably need at least a few more to get all of Gus's things packed.
She gave Ted a call to ask if Brian and Justin had room for all the stuff she had packed. She figured it was useless to pack containers and take them to Kinnetik if there was not the space at their house. Ted laughed and told her space was not a concern for Justin and Brian. He said he would stop by on his way home, and they could put the boxes on his car.
In the afternoon Leda evaluated the mess left in the hall from the tub overflowing. She measured the ceiling for drywall replacement. Much of the hardwood floor had buckled so that would to be replaced as well. Leda went online to look at possible floor treatments which would look good but be economical, she knew Mel didn't have a lot of extra cash.
When Ted stopped by, he and Leda had coffee and laughed over old times. They talked about the repairs needed in the hall. Ted said that Jennifer probably could arrange for a handyman to make the repairs. Leda told him she thought she could handle it.
Ted was quiet for a moment.
"So Leda, how long to you plan to stay in Pittsburgh?"
Leda smiled.
"To be honest, my plans are kind of fluid. I planned to stay and visit with my cousins for a while. I went through a pretty rough breakup at home. We worked together so I quit my job. I couldn't face seeing her every day."
Ted took her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze.
"I'm sorry."
"I feel like I am providing some much needed help here. Mel seems so down. Her life seems to be a series of problems, none of which seem to have a happy solution. I feel really bad for Lindsay. I never liked her parents but never even considered they were abusive.
Brian being a full time Dad with five kids is like something from a Twilight Zone episode. Mel has always felt so competitive with him. It is so obvious he is winning that competition. He even won Gus.
I don't mean that as a dig. Personally I was always amused by Brian. I do find the idea of a domesticated Brian kind of astounding. I have no idea how Mel is going to cope with everything in her life. I feel like I am taking some of the pressure off her with JR. I also feel that Mel has been dropping the ball in the mothering department which I have shared with her."
Ted smiled.
"Poor Mel. Lots of us have been pointing out where we feel she has been falling short. I'm as guilty as anyone but sadly I don't have any answers for her. This whole Lindsay thing doesn't seem like it is going to have a happy ending.
I'm sure you are helping Mel. If you think of anything positive that I could do just let me know."
Ted and Leda loaded his car. He gave her a hug and kiss on the cheek before he drove home.
Debbie and Carl brought JR home after dinner. Leda was amused by the exhausted little girl with tomato sauce dribbled down the front of her shirt. She took her from Carl's arms. JR was able to mumble a thank you to Grandmom and Grandpop.
Aunt Leda took her upstairs immediately and ran a warm tub. After a quick bath and changed into her pajamas JR was asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow. Mel called to say she was working late so Leda ordered a pizza and relaxed in the back yard with the pizza and a couple beers.
QAF-QAF-QAF-QAF
Gus, Liam & Lily were all asleep. John and Peter were playing video games in the media room and Granny had retired to the pool house. Brian and Justin shared a lounger and sipped on wine.
Justin leaned back against Brian who held him close with one arm.
"So you really are okay with this whole christening thing?"
Brian chuckled.
"I don't really care one way or the other. It doesn't seem like it was worth getting Mother Taylor and Granny on the warpath."
Justin laughed.
"Mom thinks that since you requested Father Bolton participate that you are all for a christening."
"Brownie points with Mother Taylor are never a bad thing. We both know she can turn mean if she isn't kept happy."
Justin turned to look at Brian who gave him a quick kiss.
"One thing Sunshine. This may seem mean because christenings are right up Joan's alley, but I do not want her to attend. I am firm about her playing absolutely no role in the lives of Gus, Lilly and Liam. I am glad she is apparently trying to get her life in order but that in no way erases her past behavior."
"I'm sure Mom knows Joan won't be on the guest list but I will make sure. I have been thinking about godparents."
Brian interrupted.
"Just what are godparents. I'm sure I had some, but I have no idea who they were. Just what do they do?"
"They are supposed to help the parents raise the children and be good role models. That doesn't always work out. Uncle Brad was my godfather, and my godmother was a really close friend of Mom's who died of cancer when I was eleven. The last time I saw her she was down to skin and bones, wore a scarf to hide her bald head and had a tube in her nose. Mom cried all the way home in the car, and I had nightmares for weeks.
Anyways, I am thinking of Molly and Emmett as Lily's godparents and Daphne and Ted as Liam's, unless you want Michael to be his godfather. That is fine with me."
Brian snorted.
"No I don't see Michael filling any kind of parent role, god or otherwise. Your choices seem perfect to me. I think it is time to go upstairs."
Justin turned with a huge smile.
"That choice seems perfect to me!"
QAF-QAF-QAF-QAF
On Friday Jennifer did not go into the office. The cleaning service had been at her house on Thursday but on Friday she and Tucker made sure every service sparkled. She made a blueberry pie and a cherry cheesecake for dessert.
Tucker got the job of chopping salad fixings while Jennifer marinated the roast beef for the main course. Mashed potatoes, sautéed asparagus, Harvard beets and carrots roasted with the beef completed the menu. Assorted cheeses and homemade crab and cheese appetizers were prepared.
Molly came home from Kinnetik while her mother was arranging flowers.
"Wow, we are being fancy. Trying to impress the prospective in-laws?"
Jennifer smiled.
"Your perspective in-laws not mine! Any butterflies about the meeting?"
"None at all. I don't care if they are happy about the wedding or not. For that matter I don't care if they are happy with me or not. Were you nervous when you met Dad's parents for the first time?"
"I was nervous. Janet was sweet and tried her best to put me at ease. Craig told me he let his father know my family was rich, so he went out of his way to be pleasant.
This is different, you have met Mark's parents. Both sides have already formed their opinions."
Molly chuckled.
"Yes opinions have been formed. I think Alan and Gigi like me well enough. They are not happy about wedding plans. The stated reason is that we are too young. We both suspect there is more to their displeasure.
I already told Mark that I don't care if they approve or not. He is the nervous one. Don't be surprised if he doesn't eat much tonight. He is used to family discussion happening at restaurants where everyone stays frightfully polite. If Mark and I get married you will have two son in laws that are slightly afraid of you."
"If!"
"Nervous Mark knows that tonight is a test for him. Support me and the wedding is on, side with his parents and the wedding is off."
Jennifer was surprised.
"Molly, it sounds like your feelings for Mark may not be strong enough to think about marriage."
"I love him Mom but I'm realistic. I won't be happy to break our engagement, but I can't be married to a man I can't count on to support me. I know he has no issues with Justin and Brian. His parents are a different matter. If tonight turns out badly be prepared for a few days of tears and refused phone calls."
Jennifer thought to herself now Mark won't be the only one too nervous to eat much. She understood his trepidations.
Alan, Gigi and Mark arrived on time. Jennifer and Tucker greeted them at the door. Jennifer saw the widened eyes of Alan & Gigi as they gazed at the obviously younger Tucker. He met their gaze head-on with a big smile on his face and one arm around Jennifer's waist. She really did love this man.
Conversation was cordial over wine and appetizers. Jennifer and Molly quickly changed the subject if there was any hint of controversy. The pleasant conversation continued thru dinner. Jennifer did notice that Mark did not eat much and said little. Once everyone was finished eating, Tucker and Jennifer cleared the table before serving coffee and dessert.
Alan took a sip of coffee and turned to face Jennifer.
"Thank you for a delicious dinner. I think we now need to discuss this plan for the children to marry next year. Personally, I think that plan is poorly thought out. I doubt they have the maturity necessary to make a decision this important and to consider all the relevant factors. I understand Molly wanting to be married, that is the dream of most girls, but it would be better to wait until they mature and are established in their careers."
Molly had a small smile on her face as she replied, cutting off her mother. The smile didn't fade but her tone of voice was not cheerful.
"Personally, I am thinking you have been frozen in some glacier since the 1950's and only recently defrosted. First, I am a woman not a girl. Second, I love your son. Third, this is not the fulfillment of some childhood wish to walkdown an aisle in a long white gown. Fourth, I have interned this year at Kinnetik. I have enjoyed the experience and will work there when I graduate next year."
It was obvious that Alan was annoyed by Molly's reply and her tone of voice.
"Molly, just because you have interned at a company doesn't guarantee you a job there. My understanding from Mark is you have been working with the Office Manager. That is normally a position that would be in charge of hiring clerical help."
"That is Cynthia's title but, in reality, she is the number two person at Kinnetik. You also need to keep in mind that the company is owned by my brothers. I am completely sure I will be working there when I graduate."
Jennifer tried to calm the situation.
"Alan, I understand your feelings about Molly and Mark being young to marry. I also understand how stubborn my daughter can be when she is sure of something. It is somewhat of a family trait. She is very sure of her feelings for Mark.
Parents often have difficulty accepting that their offspring are old enough to know their own minds and to make life decisions. I don't think it is helpful to call two young adults, immature or to assign outdated notions about gender roles to them.
I spoke to Cynthia, the last time I was at Kinnetik, and Molly is correct. Cynthia is all for Molly working at the company. When the owners and an employee in a senior role all agree that there will be a job offer, then there will be a job offer."
"Jennifer, I'm disappointed to discover that you are encouraging their ill-conceived plans. I'm sure you understand your family, but I am out in the business world every day. The business world is very different from family life.
Despite what you and Molly seem to believe, just because her brother is having a relationship with the business owner, it does not guarantee her a position at the business. In addition, I know that these homosexual relationships are often of short duration. Once your son and Mr Kinney part ways, I feel sure Molly's position at the company would also end. It appears that Molly refers to both men as her brother but that is not in fact correct."
Gigi took her husband's arm. Her expression demonstrated her support for his position. She entered the conversation.
"I really think we are getting off topic. We need to talk about this proposed wedding. Alan and I agree that Molly and Mark are rushing things. Molly is a fine girl, and we are very fond of her. In a few years if she and Mark marry, we would be delighted.
We just feel strongly they are rushing things. We hoped you would agree."
Mark looked like he wanted to sink into the floor. Tucker kept his eyes on Jennifer and Molly, there were too many sharp objects on the table for him to relax.
Jennifer's eye narrowed.
"Alan your homophobia is showing. Brian and Justin are committed to each other. They have a civil partnership and own everything, including Kinnetik, jointly. If marriage laws were fair and just, they would be married. I consider Brian to be my son and he certainly looks on Molly as a younger sister. I refer to our situation as a "love family" different from a "blood family". To me the love connection is stronger than the blood connection.
So, now you understand there is NO danger of Molly being summarily dismissed from her job at Kinnetik. We certainly appreciate your concern, however misplaced it may be.
Also, I am quite familiar with the business world. After my divorce I started to work in real estate. In a relatively short time, I was able to start my own real estate firm. It has done very well. My firm also handles property management for Kinnetik headquarters, the Bloom Gallery building and quite a few other properties for Justin and Brian as well as other clients.
Gigi, even if we think Molly and Mark may be young to commit to marriage, it is NOT our decision to make. Parents have tried for centuries to control who their children fall in love with. It doesn't usually work out. Sometimes there are tragic results, I'm certain you are familiar with the story of Romeo and Juliet.
In fact, sometimes it is children who have problems with their parents' love lives. Justin would prefer that Tucker and I were not a couple. I have ignored him just as Molly and Mark will ignore advice given to them that is contrary to their feelings for each other."
A clearly ill at ease Mark spoke up.
"Mom, Dad we have been all over this many times. You think I am too young to marry but Molly and I are going to get married. I would like your approval, but the lack of that approval will not stop our marriage."
Alan's face flushed with anger.
"You think you have all the answers. With both of you paying off your student debt just how are you going to afford a place to live, buy groceries and pay bills. Molly has some entry level job lined up and you think you will be in easy street. You are babes in the woods!"
Molly smiled.
"I know the total of Mark's student debt and what the monthly payment will be. I have no student loans. My brothers paid my full tuition. Mom covered my apartment costs last year and will again this year. I have been notified that I will receive a modest inheritance from my father's estate. I receive a small monthy dividend from a trust fund established by the maternal grandfather. When I turn twenty-five, I get total access to the trust. My internship has been a paid one. So, I have saved some money this summer.
I have confidence that Mark will find a job quickly but even if that doesn't happen; we won't wind up on the street. We have worked together on what we feel is a realistic budget. I don't want an engagement ring. We won't be making any big purchases or taking any exotic vacations, but we will be able live, eat and meet our expenses.
When I graduate, I will have a Master's in business administration. I will not be getting a clerical or entry level position. My mother has gone over reasonable housing costs with me. I am not a little girl dreaming of being a bride like Barbie as you seem to think."
Tucker and Jennifer had big smiles on their faces. Alan seemed to be somewhat taken aback and unsure how to proceed.
Molly looked across the table at Alan.
"Do you have questions?"
Alan just shook his head.
"Hopefully you now realize Mark and I are not idiots or clueless about real life. Since we are gathered to discussing our wedding, I wanted to let you know that the wedding and reception will take place at my brothers' home. We think it is the perfect setting for the wedding.
Of course, our plans aren't finalized but since my brothers, my mother and my grandmother are all willing and able to pay for whatever we need; there will be no need for any contribution from you. We will entertain any reasonable requests from you, but final decisions will be made by Mark and me."
Gigi immediately had something to say about the wedding locale.
"I'm afraid that really will not work for many of our family and friends. They will have religious and moral objections to the wedding."
Molly nodded.
"They won't be missed."
Gigi wasn't willing to accept that answer.
"Perhaps we could host our own reception. You and Mark could spend time at both receptions. That could ease everyone's concerns."
Molly just stared at Alan and Gigi for few moments.
"I have no concerns. Our wedding and reception will be where we choose. As I said anyone bigoted enough not to attend will not be missed. As far as I'm concerned that includes the two of you."
Gigi turned to her son.
"Mark, do you agree with Molly."
Mark looked sad as he regarded his parents.
"I one hundred percent agree with everything Molly has said. Brian and Justin are great guys."
Mark let out a small chuckle.
"Everyone in Molly's family has been very nice to me. I could tell they were looking me over to see if they thought I was worthy of Molly but they were nice about it. From what I have observed I will feel lucky to be a member of their family. They all love and support one another. They don't feel it necessary to judge or condemn people they don't agree with."
Alan and Gigi stood up.
"You have made your position clear. I'm sorry you find your own family lacking in support. I don't think your mother and I will be able to continue to provide you with money for the things your loan doesn't cover."
Tucker also stood up.
"Jennifer and I can certainly afford to make up whatever cash shortfall Mark has. We will be happy to do that for him, no strings attached."
Jennifer stood and walked down to Tucker's end of the table and put her arm around his waist. Mark and Molly were seated next to each other and they both stood, holding hands.
Alan and Gigi headed to the door followed Jennifer and Tucker. At the door Jennifer spoke.
"I'm sorry our meeting turned out to be so confrontational. Molly and I are both very protective of Justin and Brian and their relationship. I wish I could say that was always my position. I understand that different lifestyles can be difficult for us to understand and accept.
I want you to know I am always available to meet and attempt to find common ground as we move forward. I am saddened by any rupture between parents and their child."
Mark's parents left without any comment.
