A/N: Just a little filler to illustrate some of the tensions that can arrive in a relationship. JJ and Will are still very young, and their relationship is one that holds up under a pretty tense arrangement with her training, so I wanted to explore that a little bit!
Months whiled away, and before too long, the early days of summer were upon them. It was now just under eight weeks until the US Classic, where JJ would go out in front of a live audience for the first time since the Olympic floor final the previous summer.
But she wasn't nervous. Her preparation had led her to this point. Her skills were back, her routines reworked, now it was just about fine tuning the small details and drilling them until they were perfect.
After training, she had had enough time for a quick shower before Will picked her up to take her back to his place for dinner. Knowing they were going to be spending the night watching Netflix, JJ had suggested they detour past the grocery store for snacks.
He had seemed a little off when he picked her up, but still his sweet, loving self. So JJ had ignored it. But barely five minutes into their snack run, when she had turned down a box of candy Will had suggested, he was suddenly snappy and moody.
"What's your issue today?" JJ hissed under her breath as an older couple passed them in the aisle.
"Nothing," Will muttered, reaching out and grabbing a packet of Oreos off the shelf.
"Well, something obviously is," JJ spat. "So do you wanna be a big boy and just talk to me about it?"
"Knock it off JJ," Will sighed, turning and beginning to walk to the end of the aisle.
"Will, all I said was I can't eat that much candy and you got pissed off with me-"
"Because you seem to think the whole world revolves around you and your gymnastics"
JJ frowned. "No… Will, you offered me the candy and I said no. Why are you being such a dick?"
"Because I have a girlfriend who is so obsessed with her sport that she didn't even ask me how my day was when I picked her up"
"Yes I did! And you just shrugged and said it was fine, but I'm guessing now that it wasn't!" JJ exclaimed, running a hand through her hair in exasperation.
"Forget it, JJ," Will said darkly, dropping the items he'd picked on a nearby shelf. "I'm going home"
Staring after him in disbelief as he started to walk off, JJ scoffed. "Seriously?"
He didn't respond, shoving his hands into his pockets as he walked away.
"Will!"
Letting out a huff, JJ turned and walked in the opposite direction, rounding the end of the aisle and walking along the back walkway of the store.
As he reached the end of the aisle they had been standing in, Will turned back momentarily, expecting to see JJ standing there. Instead, he found the aisle empty, their items discarded on the shelves either side.
Narrowing his gaze, he headed for the entrance, walking out into the darkened parking lot and going straight for his truck.
She'd barely dropped her keys by the hall table when she heard the knock at the front door. Turning on her heel, she slipped her phone into her pocket as she walked back over to the door and slowly pulled it open.
Her eyes narrowed when she found her boyfriend standing on the porch, his head hung in shame.
"I'm sorry," he said softly, lifting his face and holding out a single rose.
JJ pursed her lips, leaning against the doorframe and folding her arms across her chest. "Thanks for making me walk home from the grocery store"
Will grimaced. "I… I really am sorry"
"You carried on like a jerk. Boyfriend of the year, right here," JJ said darkly.
"I shouldn't have treated you like that, I know," Will replied gently. "I'd had a shitty day, and I know that's no excuse… I just got frustrated. And I took that out on you, which isn't fair"
"Do you have an issue with me doing gymnastics? Training all the time, rearranging my schedule to suit, not being able to eat anything and everything? Because if you do, you know what's going to happen?" JJ asked simply. "You either suck it up and deal with it or we break up"
"I-no," Will said hastily. "I don't have an issue with it, Jayje… I'm proud of you and all the things you've achieved. I just… when I got shitty… it was an easy target"
JJ rolled her eyes. "Nice"
"JJ, I really am sorry. What do I have to do to show you that?"
Looking him up and down, JJ pushed off the doorframe, taking a step towards him.
"You could make me a cake," she said, smirking. Will frowned, the corners of his mouth seeming to want to quirk into a smile.
"I could… what?" he asked.
"Make me a cake," JJ chuckled. "Or a big pot of your mom's gumbo recipe"
Relaxing, Will broke into a grin, moving closer to JJ and wrapping an arm around her waist.
"Maybe gumbo," he said with a smile. "My cakes are pretty legendary, and I don't want Nick coming after me because you're too full of cake to flip"
JJ laughed, and he felt the rest of the tension washing off him.
"I really am sorry, babe. I shouldn't have treated you like that"
JJ shrugged, stretching up to kiss his cheek. "It wasn't so bad. The walk home from the store got my step count up for the day"
Laughing, Will gave her a gentle squeeze. "Come on. Do you still want to come over for dinner?"
JJ smiled. "Of course. As long as you're not gonna make me walk"
Will laughed. "Gotta get those steps in, Jareau"
