A/N: Absolutely gutted for Simone Biles. I support her decision and am proud of her for doing what's best for her... but I'm gutted that this happened at the Olympics of all meets.
So let's warm our hearts with our favourite young couple.
Letting out a sigh, JJ flicked her eyes open again. The room was dark, a low light from the moon filtering through the gap in her curtains. She was warm, the blankets tangled around her petite frame. The warm weight of Will's body was pressed into her side, his nose tickling her neck, his arm draped over her body. Time could've stood still, with the rain hammering down outside as if the ground had wronged the sky. January had bled into February, which slowly gave way to March, but ever stubborn, the cold weather was hanging on with an iron vice, refusing to be pushed out in favour of spring sunshine.
Turning her head to the nightstand, she groaned inwardly when the bright red 3:09 burned into her vision.
"Stop looking at the clock," Will mumbled beside her, his face nuzzled against the side of her neck. He drew his arm a little tighter, pulling her up against him and letting out a long sigh.
"Why are you still awake?" JJ whispered, lazily bringing a hand up to tousle his bed rustled hair.
"Could ask you the same thing," Will breathed, his eyes still closed even as he pressed sweet little kisses up and down her neck.
JJ lay there, cuddling closer to him as a feeling of frustration began to build inside her. Not with Will, of course, he was sweeter than pie and she loved him so much it hurt… she was frustrated from the day she had had in the gym. Her cast had been off since the second week of February. Impressed with her healing, the orthopaedic surgeon had taken her in two days later to remove the rod in her leg, before sending her on her way with a boot to support the leg for just a little longer as she began to bear weight on it again. She had finally been cleared to start light training at the beginning of the week, but had been met with a brutal awakening upon returning to the gym. All the muscle she had worked so hard to build the previous year was gone, and after a pretty abysmal practice with struggles on basic foundational skills, she'd been left wondering if her tenure as an elite gymnast was coming to its end.
Will's lips hit the sweet spot beneath her ear, making her gasp softly as she tipped her head to allow him more room. His lips worked against the soft surface of her skin, leaving a warm trail up the side of her neck, across the bottom of her jaw, and up to her lips. She wound her hand into the back of his hair, pulling him down and pressing her lips against his. It was needy… passionate… and yet somehow, still slow and gentle.
She turned towards him, sliding her hand down his muscled chest and into his boxers. As he kissed her, she wrapped her hand around him. He was still soft, but JJ could practically feel the blood pounding through his veins. She gripped him firmly, slowly moving her hand up and down as Will dipped his tongue into her mouth and swept it along her lower lip.
He broke away again, fixing his lips on her pulse point as his hand came up to palm her breast through her shirt. She groaned softly, her eyes falling closed, her grip on his dick relaxing ever so slightly.
"I need you so much right now," she breathed, tugging him back up to look in his eyes. He brought a hand to her cheek, stroking her cheekbone with his thumb as she brought her hand up to cover his. Will shifted, nudging her legs apart and settling between them. Leaning down, he pulled her into another passionate kiss as she reached down and pushed his boxers over his hips. He wasn't completely hard, but he was hard enough to push into her, which he did in one swift motion.
JJ brought her hands to the hem of her shirt, grasping it and tugging it up until it slipped over her head. Casting it aside, she wrapped her arms around Will, pulling him down against her chest until they were just warm skin against skin. Will brought his arms either side of her head, resting on his elbows as he started to rock slowly against her hips. She closed her eyes, her mouth falling open in a silent moan. Will bent even lower, pressing his face into the crook of her neck, his hand moving to cradle the top of her head.
"You feel so good," he breathed, keeping his slow steady pace as JJ lifted her legs up to his waist. She brought her arms up, clutching onto him with everything she had, her nails digging into his skin.
Time stood still, the only sounds in the room being the rustle of sheets, and the occasional breathy moan. The rain continued to hammer down outside, making them feel warm and safe in each other's arms. JJ pulled him closer, trailing one hand up into his hair. His lips pressed against the sweet spot beneath her ear, pulling a pleasured sigh from her. Even though he was keeping his slow and steady pace, she could feel her orgasm building in the pit of her stomach.
"I love you," she breathed, opening her eyes and turning her head to look at him. He lifted his face, bringing his lips to the underside of her jaw.
Slowly, steadily, she felt it building. Will rocked purposefully against her pelvis, pressing her in all the right places to edge her even closer to the release they both so desperately needed. And then it came, washing over her in a gentle wave, bringing forth nothing more than a breathless moan as she pulled him against her, clenching her legs tightly around him. He let out a soft groan, his own release finding him seconds later.
JJ lay there, still clutching onto Will, her eyes closed as her chest heaved with her efforts to catch her breath.
And before she could even fully process the moment, her eyes were welling with tears. She tried to keep her breathing even, not wanting Will to see that she was crying, but no sooner had that thought crossed her mind than a sob had escaped, betraying her emotions immediately.
Will lifted his face, looking down at her with concern.
"What's wrong?" he asked softly. "Did you not want to do it?"
JJ shook her head as she tried to find her voice.
"No… no, that's not it… I just… it's been a rough week," she said shakily, more tears coming forth when Will tenderly wiped her tears from her cheeks. "I don't feel good anymore… I can't do most of my easier skills, let alone the hard ones… I'm just so far behind where I wanted to be… and I'm just so tired… maybe this is it for me"
"Don't count yourself out before you've given yourself a chance," Will said softly, finally moving off of her and pulling her to his chest. "You just had a major injury. Coming back is going to take time. Subconsciously you're probably worried about hurting your leg again, but you just have to ease yourself back into it"
She nodded, wiping her tears away as Will kissed her temple. "This isn't the first night where I haven't been able to sleep," she admitted quietly.
"You're not alone there," Will mumbled, running his fingers through her hair.
JJ looked up, bringing her hand to his cheek. "You need to ask for help," she said gently, her eyes still shining with tears. "I know you're not keeping up with the work in your course"
Will opened his mouth to protest, but JJ cut him off.
"Knowing when to ask for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. No-one is going to think any less of you if you need some tutoring," she said.
Taking a deep breath, Will absently kissed the top of her head, pulling her closer to him and tugging the blankets a little higher over their bare bodies. "Guess we both have some demons to work on, hey?"
JJ smiled sleepily, tracing circles on his chest with the tip of her finger. "Yeah… guess we do"
It was only a few days later when, still fighting to get her groove back after so much time off, JJ found herself being walloped down with another setback.
It had started with a stuffy nose, which had then evolved into a dry cough. Putting it down to the change of seasons, JJ had ignored it, until just a few minutes working on handstands had left her head absolutely pounding. With Nick also busy training a group of level tens who were looking to qualify elite soon, JJ had excused herself from training to pay the gym's full-time doctor a visit.
"Hey JJ," Brett Chalmers said brightly as JJ entered his office. "We've missed having you around, how are you feeling?"
"Honestly, not great," JJ said with a grimace. "My head's killing me"
"Hop up on the table and I'll check you out," Brett said with a smile, tugging a fresh piece of paper over the table as JJ crossed the room.
He was quick about his exam, listening to JJ's heart and lungs, taking her temperature, and also checking her ears and throat. After a few minutes, he straightened up and took a deep breath.
"Ok. Let's start with what you don't have. You don't have strep," he said gently, taking a step back from the table and giving her a reassuring smile. "You don't have the flu. You don't have tonsillitis. You don't have a head cold. What you do have is a virus. What kind, I'm not certain, I'd have to send you for some tests, but I don't think that's necessary unless you get really sick. What you need to do is go home and rest"
JJ nodded, lifting her arm and coughing into the crook of her elbow.
"I'm saying this because it's not going to hurt you if you have to miss a couple days of practice. It's not the end of the world, especially not this early in the season. What is gonna be the end of the world is if you take a tumbling run feeling like crap and you get lost in the air and end up hurting yourself, ok? That's why I want you to go home. I also don't want you to get anyone else sick"
"Ok," JJ said softly.
"Do you want to just go home and I'll tell Nick, or do you want to go and tell him yourself?"
JJ looked up, the bright lights in the exam room suddenly making her head ache. "Can you bring him in here?"
"Yeah, I'll go get him. Hang tight for two minutes"
She let her head hang down for a moment, her whole body suddenly aching. It felt like barely seconds later that Brett and Nick were coming back into the room.
"You no good today kiddo?" Nick said gently, his face full of concern. JJ shook her head miserably, her fingers white as she supported most of her aching body through her grip on the edge of the table.
"I want JJ to go home. I want her to rest, get lots of fluids, and just chill out. I also want her to stay out of the gym until she's been symptom free and no fever for 48 hours. With enough rest, that should only be a few days at most"
Nick nodded in agreement. "Absolutely. A few days in bed, hey kiddo?"
JJ nodded again.
"Alright. Don't worry about your training, Brett's right, you'll only hurt yourself if you train while you're sick and we can't really risk that when you've literally just been cleared to train again from your leg. Just send me a text the day you feel well enough to come in so I know you're coming, ok?"
"Ok," JJ said softly, sliding off the table.
"Go home and sleep. You'll thank yourself later"
"Hey, I have a question about medicine?" JJ said into the phone as her mother brushed past her to get to the coffee machine. She leaned back against the counter, her phone pressed to her ear as she listened to the USADA representative tapping away at her computer.
"Sure, go ahead"
"Can I take Tylenol Cold and Flu Severe?"
"What's the active ingredient?"
JJ picked up the box, squinting at it to read the fine print. "Uh… acetaminophen, and… dextro… methorphan?"
"Let me check for you, one moment"
The hold music began to play in her ear, making JJ roll her eyes as she looked over at her mom. "All this to take some frickin' medicine. I honestly think they would rather we just died"
Sandy scoffed. "Don't say that, JJ"
"Well, it's a joke, I can't even take cold and flu tablets without getting a preclearance. Because I'm totally gonna use Tylenol to dope up for my next competition which isn't even until June. Wonder what edge that's gonna give me"
"They're just doing their job, JJ"
"Yeah well, it's ridiculous. I really don't see how something as simple as Tylenol has to be cleared before taking it"
"Hi Jennifer, are you there?"
"I'm here"
"That one is fine to take, just follow the dosage instructions as per normal and don't take it for longer than 7 days without consulting your doctor"
"Ok, thank you," JJ replied. Hanging up the call, she put her phone down on the counter and popped open the box of Tylenol. As she popped out two tablets, Sandy slid her a glass of water, which she gratefully accepted to swallow the pills.
"Go upstairs and get some rest. You're in a crabby mood," Sandy said with a teasing smile. "You'll feel better with some sleep"
Too fatigued to argue, JJ just nodded, swiping her phone off the counter and making her way up to her room. She changed into one of Will's T-shirts, before crawling under the covers and burying herself amongst them.
What a way to start her year. And the season wasn't even anywhere near beginning.
