A/N: A few shorter chapters - big things are coming!
JJ's dad apparently used to hold dual citizenship for the United Kingdom and the United States. Could she go over and compete for team GB?
I mean, yeah, but there's literally nothing to gain from doing that. She's one of the best gymnasts from the best team in the world. USAG likely wouldn't release her to compete for Team GB because they'd be losing an incredibly talented athlete. Gymnasts who go to compete for other countries besides the country they live and train in usually do so because they have no hope of making their home country's team in the first place, or their home country has a nonexistent program. Neither of those things are the case for JJ. Although I'm sure GB would be thrilled to have her!
How did JJ fly under the radar for so long? I barely even knew her name by the time she made the 2011 Worlds team! Did she come into elite late?
No, she actually in fact became an elite in 2008, when she was almost fourteen. But her first junior nationals, Boston in 2008, was a bit of a disaster to say the least. She fell on every event except vault, where she came in significantly downgraded to play it safe. Her second night was a little better, with only one fall on bars and one on floor (she had counted two on each the first night), but yeah, it wasn't a great competition for her. The following year she looked much stronger, but really, she didn't have her breakout until London. That was where she really proved herself and it's only been a meteoric rise since then. She didn't really fly under the radar until London purely because she wasn't really on the radar for the Olympic team until 2011. Before that, she had a lot of consistency issues and a lot to prove and no-one was really looking at her as a serious contender until a year out from the Games.
The kitchen was a hive of activity on that Saturday afternoon, with everyone in the Jareau household home, and Will over to spend time with JJ. While Michael rifled through the medicine cabinet above the fridge, Will was making himself a coffee.
Sitting cross legged at the dining table, JJ huffed, aggressively hitting the keyboard of her laptop.
"Come on… stupid thing," she muttered. Will sniggered, pulling his mug out from under the coffee machine and turning to face her. She groaned, running a hand through her hair and sighing at the device. "I hate this"
"What are you doing?" Will chuckled, stepping back as Michael passed him heading for the cabinet in which the glasses were kept.
"I'm trying to finish this assignment, but it's so stupid," JJ huffed, finally pushing the laptop away and pulling her knee up to her chest.
"Did Nick piss you off in the gym this morning, Grumpy Guts?" Michael asked with a laugh, leaning back against the counter. JJ looked up as he popped two aspirin into his mouth, her face still set in a frown.
"I'm not grumpy," she said defiantly.
Will scoffed into his coffee, which only made Michael laugh. "Yes you are. Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed?"
JJ scowled at her boyfriend. "Can you piss off back to your apartment?"
"Can you eat something? Because I think you're hangry, you haven't eaten at all since coming home from the gym, and that's why you're being an asshole to everyone," Will shot back. Michael snorted, immediately turning away so JJ wouldn't see him laughing. JJ huffed again, but her frown softened.
"Sorry," she muttered, resting her head on her hand. "I'm tired, I'm hungry, I've got the cramps from hell, and I'm sick of this assignment"
Will crossed the room, slowly taking a seat beside JJ as Michael picked up his glass of water and left the room. "Are you stressed about Worlds?"
JJ took a deep breath, before nodding. Without a word, she tipped her head until it was resting on Will's shoulder, prompting him to put an arm around her. "I crashed floor at Classics… and then I nearly broke my nose on bars at Nationals. Marta's going to put so much pressure on me at camp. And if I don't meet her expectations… she's not going to put me on that team"
Will let out a heavy sigh, pressing his lips to the top of her head in a gesture of comfort. As much as JJ could tell him about the things she experienced as an elite gymnast, he knew he would never be able to fathom just how much pressure was on her at any given time. She had proved herself time and time again, yet Marta Karolyi continued to insist that she had more to prove. And not only that, but JJ's toughest critic was herself… she had high expectations for her own performances, and even with a great performance, she could always find something to improve.
"I know that… people tell you all the time not to stress, not to worry about pressure. And I know that that's easier said than done, but all you can realistically control is the gymnastics that you do. Outside of that, you can't control it, so you shouldn't worry about it"
"I know," JJ breathed. "But exactly like you said… it's easier said than done"
"You're gonna be just fine, Jennifer Jareau," Will said softly, pressing another kiss to her temple. "Just focus on what you can control and the rest will all fall into place"
