Chapter 2
"I found five lead lined letters at my place," Kara announced upon her arrival back at the Tower.
"Five? You weren't gone that long," Alex gave her a look. Marie's letters were usually at least a month apart so the fact that she had gotten five in just a few weeks made the redhead nervous.
"Open them up. Let's find out what Marie was thinking," J'onn said. Kara looked at the postmarks on the envelopes. Finding the first one, she opened the letter, and began to read aloud,
"I hope this letter finds you well. I hear that there is trouble in Gotham. Please take care." Kara was confused. Usually, the letters were filled with what she'd been up to and wondering if they could catch a meal together. This was… underwhelming.
"Um, is it just me or does that seem…" Alex started.
"Light?" The Martian gave Kara a look.
"Very. There are numbers here… they make no sense…" the blonde handed the letter over to J'onn. He too couldn't figure out why there were twelve digits together. There would be no good reason that Marie would be giving out any sort of account number to Kara.
"Let's keep track. Maybe the next letter will make more sense," Alex suggested.
"Good idea. Her messages were broken up for a reason," J'onn agreed. The elevator opened and Nyssa emerged from the lift.
"My contacts have not heard of a kidnapped engineer that worked for Obsidian North," the former League of Assassins leader frowned.
"Will they keep their ears to the ground?" Kara asked.
"Yes, now that they know what to look for. What have you got there?" Nyssa wanted to know. They quickly brought her up to speed. The raven-haired woman looked at it and then inquired,
"Why does she have latitude and longitude on her letter?"
"How'd you know what they were?" Kara gave her a look.
"When we were disguising coordinates, we'd run them all together like this. People automatically think of bank accounts and we let them think that. Plot them on the computer," Nyssa said.
"We don't know where the decimal point should be," Alex pointed out.
"Try after the first two digits and after the eighth digit," she suggested. The redhead did as she was instructed. She frowned and relayed,
"They're the coordinates for Gotham."
"What does the next letter say?" Nyssa asked. Kara quickly ripped open the second one.
"I hope this letter finds you well. I hear you're still on vacation. Hope you're having a good time. Please take care," Kara huffed and then gave the numbers at the bottom of the letter to Alex.
"These numbers give my Central City," her sister said. Kara shook her head and double checked the postmark.
"How is the postmark still National City?" She wanted to know.
"Are they all postmarked National City?" J'onn asked.
"Yes," Kara confirmed and opened the three remaining letters. All were just as innocuous as the first two. The coordinates gave them Star City, back to National City, and then the last set gave them the middle of the ocean.
"Well, that makes no sense," Nyssa wasn't sure why the middle of the ocean would be a spot to pick given the others were on solid land.
"Fingerprint the letters and the envelopes. I have a phone call to make," Kara quickly pulled out her phone and went out to the balcony.
"What do you suppose that was about?" Nyssa gave Alex and J'onn a look.
"My guess is that there is only one person who knows what that ocean location is and she is currently in Gotham," the Martian said.
