Chapter 5

Alex and a team of former DEO agents approached the apartment building where Agent Todd Smith lived. A team went around to the back of the building to cover any exits, while the redhead took a team in the front. They charged up the steps and people got out of their way.

Upon reaching the door labeled "2F", Alex pounded her fist on the door. She announced that it was her, hoping that the former DEO Agent would open the door. No such luck so the redhead tested the doorknob. The door was locked. She looked to the man with the battering ram. Moving out of formation and to the front of the door, he swung the instrument and the door busted open.

The team entered the apartment and swept it for any signs that someone was there. Alex shook her head as they found no one. Worse still, they found no signs of disturbance, meaning that no one who shouldn't have been there hadn't entered the premises. She grabbed her phone and called her sister.

"We have a situation. Agent Smith isn't here. It doesn't look like anyone broke in either," she explained.

"Search for any notes or secreted papers. The computer is sifting through the letters and cipher material. Marie got herself into something… I can't get into it over the phone," Kara told her.

"Oh boy. Why wouldn't they have come to us?" Alex asked.

"I don't know. I'm hoping a reason pops up soon," the blonde responded. They ended the call and Alex turned to her former DEO companions. The man closest to her was a good agent and had worked alongside Agent Smith for years.

"I told the guys to check the dumpsters," Agent Gonzalez told her.

"Let's hope they don't find anything," Alex heaved out a sigh.

"Agreed. What did Supergirl have to say?" He wanted to know.

"She's in it up to her eyeballs and it seems so was Marie and Todd," Alex shook her head.

"Ok so what do we know?" Gonzalez asked.

"Marie mailed or had Todd mail letters to Supergirl. The letters made no sense. A possible cipher was found at Marie's place. Todd didn't show up for work today and didn't call. That's not in his personality but a check of his apartment does not find him or evidence he was taken against his will," Alex summed up.

"Could he be missing from last night?" The agent wondered.

"Talk to the neighbors. Take a couple of men with you. I'll search the apartment with the remaining agents," she told him. Gonzalez nodded and quickly called to the two nearest agents to join him.

Alex looked around the apartment unsure of what she would find. One of the other agents called her from the bedroom and she went to find out what was going on. She recognized the agent as Jim Schwartz. He'd been a fresh agent when she was still heading up the DEO.

"Something look odd to you? I couldn't place it at first but…" Schwartz let her look around and Alex could see what he meant. The room was sparse and she noticed that for a man that was always on time, he had no alarm clock. While she admitted that most people used their phones, it still seemed odd that the room had no clock at all.

"Why would you not have a clock at all?" The redhead wondered.

"Better yet where is his phone charger?" Schwartz asked.

"Definitely don't want your phone dying if you're using it as your alarm clock. So, he took his charger with him. He intended to be gone for a while," Alex frowned.

"I checked under the bed and found this," he pointed to a case that he'd put on the bed. The redhead opened it and heaved a sigh.

"He took his gun with him," she said.

"If I wasn't concerned before, I am now," Schwartz frowned.
