Chapter 6
"Crap on a cracker," Kara heaved a sigh after hanging up her phone. She'd just spoken to her sister. Nyssa gave her a look as did Nia and J'onn.
"What's up?" Nia asked.
"Agent Smith's gun, phone, and charger are gone. There are no signs of him," the blonde explained.
"When was the last time anyone saw him?" J'onn wanted to know.
"Last night when he left L Corp. Alex said that Lena is sending a link to their security camera footage, but can you look at camera footage around L Corp and his apartment?" Kara asked him.
"On it," the Martian promised. He quickly turned his focus to the computer bank behind him, hoping that they could find something useful. Good people were probably in big trouble and they needed help.
"He must have known that something was wrong with Marie. Did we ever figure out how they knew each other?" Nia had wondered how the two met since Marie was not an agent of the DEO, nor did she have any dealings with the agency.
"No, we didn't. I'll call Alex back," Kara said moving away from the group to make the phone call.
"Ok, so we've got a very undercover agent, who was working at Obsidian North. She somehow is in contact with a former DEO agent. Whatever she had gotten herself into, she started sending odd letters to Kara, who was not in town. Given her experience, she had to know "Supergirl" wasn't Supergirl. Still, she didn't reach out to J'onn, who she knows. Why keep this so close to the chest, but then share it with someone she barely knew? If it was something going on at Obsidian North, why didn't she try to reach out to Kate? Hell, the local news certainly would have been interested," Nyssa figured.
"None of this makes sense. Marie is an engineer by trade. Logical, intelligent… none of what she's done is any of that," Nia said.
"Alex said they are asking the neighbors and still searching the apartment," Kara relayed as she rejoined the group.
"Pulling the security footage from L Corp up now," J'onn announced. The group turned their attention to what he had.
"Do we know where this is?" Kara wanted to know. They didn't know every square inch of L Corp nor where all the cameras were.
"Agent Smith was supposed to be training new recruits to the security department. He was seen entering his office here – on time at nine am," the Martian showed them on the screen.
"No cameras in his office," Nyssa frowned.
"No, but Lena did promise to send over the call records of his office phone and his company cell phone. She's trying to track his cell phone now per her e-mail," J'onn explained as he sped up the recording. As the minutes turned into hours, the former DEO agent hadn't left his office.
"He took coffee in with him, right? Man has a bladder of steel. It's been three hours and he hasn't left the room," Nia pointed out.
"Maybe he's a slow drinker," Kara shrugged.
"How is he training new recruits from his desk?" Nyssa wanted to know.
"Good question but here he comes out of his office," J'onn said. They watched as he headed for the breakroom.
"He doesn't look jumpy," Nia said.
"No, but he pats at his pants pocket multiple times as he walked into the breakroom," Nyssa noted.
"No cameras in the breakroom but he wasn't in there long enough to throw anything in the microwave. He comes out empty handed, talking on the phone," Kara said.
"Is that his company phone?" Nia asked.
"L Corp standard issues phones with covers that say L Corp on it. That phone doesn't have an L Corp cover…" J'onn said.
"Not good," Kara whipped out her cell phone and alerted her sister.
"If he's using a personal cell phone, then that would explain why Lena hasn't gotten back to us yet," Nyssa figured as they continued to watch the footage at an accelerated speed.
"He goes back into his office, skips lunch, comes out ten minutes later, and heads for a class he is teaching," the Martian points out as they watch the man move down the hallway into a classroom.
"What was he supposed to be teaching?" Nia inquired.
"L Corp security systems it would seem. Let them know how to use the camera system and computers," J'onn told them.
"What I wouldn't have given to be a fly on the wall in there. Any chance they'll be talking to the students? We need to know his behavior," Nyssa said. They were so intent on the video that when J'onn's phone rang they all jumped out of their skins.
"Hello?" He asked. He was quiet for a few minutes before thanking the person.
"What's up?" Kara wanted to know.
"They found a body down by the waterfront," the Martian heaved a sigh.
