"Starting a fight in the middle of the cafeteria, what were the two of you thinking?!" Glynda was admonishing both Jae and Cardin who were subsequently dragged up to meet with Ozpin to discuss what had happened.
It didn't take long for someone to intervene once the fight between Cardin and Jae broke out, that first punch thrown by Jae had knocked Cardin clean off of his seat and devolved the two into an all out brawl; Cardin had a sizeable knot on his head from Jae smashing a plate on it, a bloody nose and a swollen lip. Jae meanwhile had a black eye, a very badly bruised throat and his arm was stuck in a sling.
"He threw the first punch! He was the one who started that fight!" Cardin would admit to this as he pointed at Jae.
"THAT'S A LIE AND YOU KNOW IT! YOU'RE THE ONE WH-"
"Both of you, please…one at a time!" Glynda would order them as she snapped the riding crop in her hand against the desk, bringing them back to attention and shutting them up.
"Honestly…You two are team leaders…you need to set an example to not just each other but to your teammates as well." Ozpin said with a sigh as he kept an eye on the both of them; "Whoever it was that started the fight is not important…but I will not have you causing problems for other students by brawling in the middle of their lunch hours….I'm giving you both detention and be glad that I am being lenient." Ozpin warned the two as Glynda ushered Cardin out and left the two of them in his office.
"I-I'm sorry, Professor Ozpin….I know you told me that I needed to keep a clean record but this was something that I couldn't ignore." Jae explained to Ozpin as Glynda came back in; telling them what had happened and what led up to the fight.
"I already know…your teammates had come to me earlier to explain and vouch for you while you and Mr. Winchester were getting yourselves patched up." Ozpin assured Jae.
"Standing up for another student is an admirable thing to do, Mr. Cielo but that still doesn't mean that I approve of you getting into fights with other students…" Glynda added in as she gave him an understanding yet stern look; "But there is also something that I need to discuss with you while Professor Ozpin is present."
"Professor Goodwitch explained to me about your…."accident" in one of the training halls a while back…and she had some apprehension regarding your attitude towards it along with some…other concerns." Ozpin elaborated on this as he leaned forward; "She said she saw some marks on you that were worrying and I was wondering if you could explain them for us?"
Jae started to feel nervous; he remembered Glynda's shocked gaze on his upper body when she insisted that the school nurse check him for other injuries; "I…I have problems with my Aura….I just have some bumps and scrapes that need to be healed…that's all…" Jae seemed to explain in as calm a voice as he could while his heart rate could put a hummingbird's to shame.
"Jae, I can promise you this right here and now; anything that you tell me and Glynda in this room will never be repeated outside of it. So please…we're your teachers, allow us to help you." Ozpin tried to coax Jae with a soft and concerned tone when he noticed that Jae was visibly shaken.
After taking a deep breath and stifling the pain down from his fractured arm, Jae decided to open himself up; "My….My birth parents were…they weren't nice people, my father trained me day and night because he wanted me to become the Huntsman that he couldn't, but when I didn't meet his standards in training…" Jae then placed his non cast covered hand over his other arm; "He…."Motivated" me to try harder…." He would say and elicited a stifled gasp from Glynda.
"And by motivated…did he…." Glynda would ask him, though the silence and the scared look on his face seemed to answer that question for her if the marks on his body didn't already.
"And what of your mother?" Ozpin asked, now feeling more then a slight pang of guilt after drudging up this memory.
"She wasn't any better…she called me a coward for asking if my training could be made easier…" Jae explained, the bandaid was ripped off so he figured he may as well come clean; "But when I was 10, she ran off…I don't blame her…"
"I…I'm sorry, to have brought up this kind of memory." Ozpin apologised, "I think you should get back to your team…"
Jae would nod, getting up from his chair and headed for the elevator back down as Glynda watched him with a worried and almost sad expression before opening her scroll to check something.
"Cigarette burns, lash marks….I can't imagine what kind of things that he must have seen growing up…" Ozpin remarked as he leaned back in his chair; "Glynda…I'd like for you to look into Mr. Cielo's parents…See what has become of them."
"I've found them; his father is Amon Cielo, but he's currently in Vale prison serving a sentence for assault and abuse." Glynda said as she looked at what could be found; "The mother is Lilli Cielo…She's currently labelled as missing."
"It must be some small consolation that such a man is behind bars, though I think we should still keep an eye on Jae for the time being…In case there's any more outbursts like this." Glynda mused.
"Glynda, with all due respect…I think that it's probably best to let him be for a while, if we keep watching him like a hawk especially after he's just relived such a bad memory. It might give a wrong impression to him about us." Ozpin explained; "Though I do have to admit, something seems to be missing….it could be nothing but I think there's more to this."
—Meanwhile in the courtyard—
Jae sat on a nearby bench as he tried to calm himself down after what he had told Goodwitch and Ozpin, hoping that the sounds of the rustling trees or the wind could help his nerves a little more as he could still hear the words from before ringing in his ears.
"No one will ever love you." Cardin's voice echoed in his mind.
"Shut up…." Jae growled to himself as he tried to even his breathing.
"Freaks and Weirdos like you have to stick together." Another voice jeered at him from his mind.
"I already told you to shut up!" Jae dug his fingers into his hair as he was trying to block out the vile words.
"All you have proven to be a weak willed coward on top of being a little monster squeezed out of that demon seedbed that you call a mother!"
"I SAID SHUT UP!" Jae finally snapped as he yelled out to the now deafening silence of the gardens he had secluded himself in, however he seemed to no longer be alone as he heard footsteps coming closer to him.
"Are you okay?" a voice would ask as Jae looked up and saw that same rabbit girl that he had helped in the cafeteria; "You sounded like you needed help, but I can go if you want to be alone."
"I-uh…it's okay, sorry to worry you…it's just some…me problems…" Jae said half heartedly, speaking about everything with Ozpin was one thing but he was emotionally tired and he just wanted someone to be there.
"Okay…My name's Velvet by the way…But I did come by here for another reason." she said and sat down on the bench with him; "I wanted to say something for what you did for me before in the cafeteria..with Cardin and everything." Velvet would say shyly as she then flashed him a small smile; "So…Thank you, no one else has really stood up for me like that except for my team."
Jae gave her a small smile back; "It's nothing, I just did what any person would…from one bullied kid to another." He admitted though he wasn't expecting the bunny girl gave him a gentle hug as thanks.
Surprised that she was doing this, he gave her a light hug back; "I'm Jae, it's nice meeting you." Jae said as the hug seemed to do the trick and make him feel a little better.
"I should probably go though, Coco's probably worried about me after everything…Hopefully you can feel better soon." She said as she went off towards the dorms.
Jae decided to do the same as he headed towards the dorms too; the talk with Velvet didn't fix everything but it at least helped him get out of his funk.
"How'd it go with Professor Ozpin?" Pyrrha would ask as she saw him come in but she then saw Nora and Ren file in to hear about what happened.
"Yeah, Ozpin gave us both detention for what happened…but thank you for sticking up for me." Jae smiled a little though Ren seemed to be a little perturbed by the fact Jae had detention.
"Wait, you got detention for helping someone who was getting bullied? That's not fair at all…" Nora pointed out as she crossed her arms; "Though it does look like you're healing up." She mentioned as the black eye that Jae had was already gone though everything else was still healing.
"He said that the problem was starting a fight in the middle of the cafeteria….Ozpin said it set a bad example for Team leaders to start fights like that…"
Ren nodded; "While I don't exactly agree with giving you detention as well, I think Professor Ozpin does make a good point." he would point out as he then looked up at Jae; "But I do still think you did the right thing, Jae."
"I have an idea." Pyrrha would say as she lightly grabbed Jae's arm and took him outside and onto the roof; the view was grand even from there as they could see Ozpin's tower and Vale beneath them.
"Uh Pyrrha…I know today was a rough day but I don't think I'm at THAT point yet…." Jae would admit partly joking before Pyrrha quickly turned him around to face her.
"No! it's not like that, I know things have been difficult with your Aura and practicing your Grimm weapons…It's also hard to ignore that you've always been apprehensive about doing it in the Training hall so I want to help out more…we can use this spot up here after classes and work on your aura up here..where no one can see us."
"You…You really think I need help that badly?" Jae asked her; While he was aware that he could use the help, the embarrassment still hit him all the same.
"Jae…It's not such a bad thing, everyone needs a little push from time to time but that doesn't make you any less of a person…you still made it to Beacon…that alone speaks volumes about what you're capable of." Pyrrha goaded him as she lightly pat his arm
"Only by walking on eggshells….They said as much when I was accepted." Jae said as he looked to Pyrrha.
"What do you mean?" Pyrrha asked him in confusion; "Why would you think that the teachers hold you to such a degree?" This was new, Pyrrha was well aware that Jae was constantly putting all his efforts into school and he was always hasty in getting to the next class but she never understood why.
"When I got told I could go to Beacon….They said that they'd be watching me all the time…in AND around school time, Because I never got a vote of confidence from a licensed teacher or a huntsman; they wanted to verify I was good enough so they have me under a microscope, but if I can't improve my Aura then it'll only be a matter of time before I kiss the school goodbye." Jae vented; he had held in this since day 1 and now the floodgates burst.
"Then let me help you, If you are truly worried that you can't do it then the rest of your team can help bolster you…We don't want to see you go just as much as you don't want to go, it's difficult but that doesn't mean that it's impossible, we rely on you as our leader so why not rely on us as your teammates…and your friends." Pyrrha was determined at this point, she wanted to help him and no amount of stubbornness was going to stop her.
"…Alright…I know it's real selfish of me to try attempting this on my own but I do think that you have the right idea, so I'll take you up on that offer." Jae decided to accept.
Pyrrha smiled, thankful that Jae was able to hear her out on this; "Alright, then we can start tomorrow. For now I think you need some rest." She said before climbing through the window while Jae stared out at the view.
However it seemed that there was another who had their own thoughts to chime in; "Oh Jae, I can't believe that you thought that you could hide all that stuff." Cardin gloated as he climbed up onto the roof.
"The hell do you want? Because I'm really not in the mood to finish what was started in the cafeteria." Jae rolled his eyes; though the fact that he showed up now meant he heard about his Aura problem and the fact that he could make Grimm Weapons.
"Well, it's hard to ignore you two from my dorm room…so, you're on thin ice with Goodwitch and Ozpin? I never realised you were such a troubled case." Cardin taunted him as he leered at Jae.
"My Aura's not as strong as others but I can still kick your ass, Winchester." Jae warned him as he started inching towards the window.
"Yeah, but how much can the others tolerate you when they find out you have Grimm weapons…because in all honesty that sounds like something a Demon could do." Cardin remarked cryptically.
"Don't be stupid, they don't exist anymore….they're a myth, remember?" Jae pointed out.
"Maybe, but I don't think that'll matter if I start telling people that you can play around with Grimm." Cardin said and revealed his idea; "Sure that redheaded know-all and those twerps from Team RWBY might like you now but they may just turn on a dime when they realise how monstrous you can really be."
"They already know, numbnuts...And threatening me while you're on equally shaky grounds isn't going to work." Jae snarked back at Cardin.
"Oh yeah? and what about Ozpin and Goodwitch, sure they might be good teachers but how are they going to react when they find out about your little….Grimm collection…All I have to say is that you're up to something with them and they can boot you straight out of-" Cardin seemed to revel in how smart he thought he was but Jae's butting in seemed to poke a hole in that bubble.
"Look if all your big plan amounts to is trying to spread lies about me then go ahead and try….because I've got nothing to prove to you or anyone else at Beacon; so cut your bullshit, grow up and fuck. Off." Jae warned him as he glared at Cardin, "Because I'm not afraid of you or your threats." Jae finished then turned for the window and left, leaving Cardin on the roof.
"I'll find something alright and you better hope that you get expelled because what I got in mind is going to be a whole lot worse then that." Cardin thought maliciously as he climbed back down towards his dorm.
